Day in my Summer Life (music major) at Sewanee Summer Music Festival! 2024
Thank you Sewanee for such an incredible summer experience! I had the most fun, learned a lot, and greatly cherished the four weeks I spent here. SSMF 2024.
In this video, I share a day in my life as a music major (violin performance) student at my first summer music festival! Summer festivals are essentially music camps, but hold the equivalent importance of an internship for other fields. I hope you enjoyed this video! Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
Ps. If you were here this summer, PLEASE SAY HI!! :)))

Asian Parents vs. Music Major Kid: asking my parents their thoughts on me pursuing music
Просмотров 4103 месяца назад
Caught my parents a little off guard with these questions, so I wanted to preface that with their answers! I'm extremely thankful for such loving and supportive parents. Also, English is their second language so please be nice. :) I asked them questions such as: - Are you disappointed in my decision to pursue music? - Are you worried about my future? - Reaction when I decided to do music? Etc. ...

      @SophieCViolin 18 дней назад

      Hello! I am so glad you find my videos helpful. As for a string crossing slur (I believe you are referring to bariolage bowing?) , I recommend practicing open string first and the left hand separately. Left hand try to practice it reduced in chords, not thinking of it one note at a time. The string crossings are best practiced open string first. Then, try slowly combining the two. I hope this can help!!

    • @SophieCViolin
      @SophieCViolin 29 дней назад

      That's a great question! There are four levels for each individual sting that your right arm should be at. The Elbow/right forearm should be parallel to the angle of each string level. I know this is a bit hard to explain via words, but I hope this can help! It's mostly about which level your right arm is at for each string.

    The thing with music is people don’t view it as a career, they view it as just a side gig or hobby while they pursue more realistic careers such as healthcare career, which I don’t know how they pursue anything other than music, because there’s only a slim chance you’ll make it big in music. Or they view it as something you can teach yourself through books and internet and you don’t need to go to college for it. So they pursue another field or get a day job while they pursue music on the side, which I still don’t know how people pursue other fields when music is their main skill. With me, I pursued computer science instead of music and I stopped ultimately because coding was just not music, I thought I could relate computer science to music theory but you just can’t, they are different fields. Computer science is all about coding and algorithms and that requires a totally different brain. With fields like medicine however, there are specific requirements to become a doctor, ie college then medical school. You can’t be a self taught doctor, but you can be a self-taught guitarist/musician. Also, sorry I deleted my comment but you gave me advice on what to do besides music and you said if I remember that it doesn’t matter what field you pursue but the commitment you make and the challenging of yourself to go through some rigorous education.

      Hi there! It's good to hear from you again! Thank you for sharing these thoughts-- many of which I resonate with. I'm learning that the study of music is so much more in depth than what you can acquire on the internet or self-study. There's something about having a mentor (private teacher) that walks with you through your journey as a musician and shares their personal wisdom that just can not be replaced. The journey of an artist is more than just technique, which could possibly be learned online. However, I do agree that you do not necessarily need to go to school for this wisdom or experience. What school does allow, that other majors perhaps might not, is time. Time to practice, time to ponder, time and energy to dive deeper. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and allowing me to share some of mine! Wishing you the best no matter what you decide. Life is a long journey, it's never really the end of anything unless you want it to be! :)

    Powerful testimony to a great personal challenge! You told it honestly and believably. I love your assessment at the end of the process, of your elation and despair, your motivation levels and the shifting quality of your practice. Your advice to pick up and move on. Your mom's wisdom. This is a brilliant and tangibly human description of how your serious challenge actually went. You seized it! Thank you for sharing your valuable experience. I would have been interested to know how you organized your work each day... or perhaps that was something that evolved over time for you, depending on what you set out to work on and learn, and accomplish. Brava to you! Simon Fischer has a beautiful practice flow chart, full of balloons and arrows going everywhere, that I adapted and added to, to include those often ignored aspects of musicianship, of playfulness, improvisation and even composition. I like to impart this total approach of practice to my students. But have I taken on such a 1000 hr practice challenge for myself? Not yet!! You've inspired me!

      @@charlenestevens1860 hi! I planned to leave out the first finger because I find that in second position, I’m working out my 1st and 3rd finger. In first position, I’m working out my pinky (4th finger) which typically is much weaker and needs to build more strength than the other fingers. The exercise is designed to strengthen and practice, so working on weaknesses makes sense here. I hope this makes sense!

      Hi, I'm not too sure if maybe you can try slowing the video down to see where shifts occur?

    I'm 21, and after 2 failed college tries, Psychology and Computer Science (yes, i really don't know what to do with my life), i went to Economics. I'm on the 4th semester, and so far, i don't hate it, i actually like it a little. But i have that feeling that my heart doesn't belong there. I often get caught thinking about music, getting extremely excited just because i heard a new music that i loved, or i learned a difficult song on the guitar. Currently, i plan to find a job in my area so i can buy things that i need, like a new guitar, a better smartphone, and get a driver's license. I don't consider myself young for a music carrer, but i intend to try and pursue something in this area. No matter how much i have to go through, like spend hours a day on a job that i don't love just so i can buy an amplifier for my new guitar. I want to feel like i have a better purpouse than just graduate, work and spend money. I lost 3 years of my life due to depression, mainly about carrer's choice. I don't want to lose more.

      Hi there. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I'm so glad that you're starting to find more purpose and perhaps a major you're settling into. There's no shame in making mistakes and growing from them. I really hope you can pursue and invest in what you love, and may depression have no more grip over your life! Wishing you the best.
