    Thank you for this great video. I have small hands and cannot wait to practice this exercise. Just learning at 65 and my thumb joint at my hand has been horribly sore. Many blessings to you for sharing your knowledge with us. Looking forward to watching all your videos!

      Congratulations for starting the violin and thank you so much for your lovely comments!
      Regarding your sore thumb joint, please don't allow your thumb to become strained.
      In fact you shouldn't have pain at all, so go very easy at the moment with your left hand.
      Don't worry though, there are things you can do to help, so please look out for my upcoming video all about this very subject.
      Thanks again for your lovely comments, and maybe concentrate more on bowing on open strings for now until you sort out your left hand. Mary V

    This is wonderful! I have developed tendinitis because of improper left hand technique and have been unable to play anything for a month. I certainly will try this exercise as soon as I am able. Thank you sooooo much!

      Thank you very much, I'm so glad you like the video. I'm sorry to hear you developed tendonitis. Tendonitis is a tricky thing to get rid of as it recurs very easily if the causes aren't tackled properly. When you begin to use the left hand again, please be patient and only practice in very short bursts so you can keep your muscles and tendons very fresh. Build things up again very slowly and STOP when you feel any pain and instead maybe concentrate on practicing your bowing with open strings. Good luck and I do hope you'll be playing again soon! Mary V

      If it feels too difficult, don't force it. Remember, when you are trying a new technique, the mind processes the information until it begins to permeate the physical action, so be gentle and give your mind and body time to adjust and learn. Thanks very much for your comment. Mary V

    thank you for the tutorial. How many repetitions or for how long should I do that exercise?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  2 года назад

      Thank you for your great question.
      It's very hard for me to say how many repetitions or how long you could practice, because everyone is different, but...
      If you did it every day at the beginning and end of your practice for say 5 minutes each time with maximum concentration that would be great.
      Give your hand and fingers the chance to experiment and feel different positions and possibilities.
      Be patient! If the hand has been straining, it needs time and your awareness and help to get free of that strain.
      And every time you practice the exercises, ask yourself;
      'Am I starting to work out how to free my fingers and reset my hand so my fingers (especially the 4th) can work better?'
      I do hope this helps and that your practice goes really well. Please ask any further questions at any time. Best Wishes, Mary V

    What do you think about 7/8 violin for small hands?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  2 года назад +3

      Actually, I like the idea - why not? Some people believe 7/8 violins are not 'proper' and not as powerful as full size, but honestly, that's nonsense. I've met plenty of professional violinists who use lovely 7/8 violins. Just like any other violin, you'd be looking for a well made, gorgeous sounding violin and the power is really up to your technique.
      At the same time, you can't escape making technical alterations to support your small hands no matter what size the violin is, except the stretches are a tiny bit smaller with a 7/8.
      Recently I was in a violin shop and had the chance to try violins, including some 7/8 - just gorgeous and a joy to play. So if you want to play on a nice 7/8 violin, go for it and best wishes! Mary V

      @@monsterworld8071 Please don't worry if it's too difficult at the moment - there's an enormous amount of technique in the video that represents years of practice, thought and experimentation. Be patient and gentle while these ideas eventually percolate through to your playing. Mary V
