THAT little view out the window with the farmer and his wife and their cat... Sublime ! I mean when you zoom in on that it's just such a perfect little painting all on it's own ! Love the Whole painting... but, wow... so much story in that little corner. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for this review. I ordered some but I think I’ll be sending them back. I don’t have good ventilation in my apartment and with a dog around I prefer paints on the more odorless side. Thank your for being honest about them because you’re the first person talking about the smell properly I see on here!
I LOVE, LUV, all the elements you incorporated in your painting!! Thank you for sharing your review and experience with the So Flat Paints, I hope to give them a try...
Only just found this video. A big thank you as saved my pocket have put some of these in my cart but so pleased watched this first. Like you really suffer with smells of materials and have had to give up some mediums because of this. Sad but glad I found out before purchasing.
Just found sandi a few weeks ago and binging her vids. Watching the slow descent into her loving purple is my favorite part! “I am not a purple person” she says, as she adds a new purple to every single art supply purchase. 😂
Adorable painting. So here is what I feel about paints. I kinda think of most things like food- lol. Even though some foods don't make you feel bad short term, long term those delightful donuts will catch up to you. So even if the smell is tolerable, it can cause some damage over longer term use.
Loving your sketches and painting ❤ This paint really suits your style of painting more than other paint I’ve seen you use. Let’s hope they bring out a non toxic paint after your review 🙏. I love ❤ Golden paint …they are SO good, it’s my favourite paint! Such a shame these have an odour 🙁 Thank you for your honest review 🙏 ❤
Hi. I really appreciate your HONESTY in this review. I too can’t really paint with oils, unless I only use it straight from the tube, with maybe really good linseed oil as a “solvent.” I love matte, as well, and for years have added things like Liquitex Ultra Matte Medium to flatten my acrylics. I bought a couple of containers of SoFlat but haven’t yet used it. I’m hypersensitive and can get migraines, etc. from even fumes that don’t have obvious smells to other people. I haven’t yet watched your NovaColor video(s?) but a few years back I purchased thousands of dollars of it in big, big jars, because I was doing a residency and working on huge paintings. After one day of using only one or two colors in an enclosed room (and it was about 1500 square feet!) I was extremely sick. To me it seemed like it was full of ammonia. My husband and I drove all the way to from Sausalito (San Francisco), where I was doing the residency, to Culver City (Los Angeles), and NovaColor was kind enough to return my money. But I don’t think they will typically do that. It is a family owned business and many, many well known and up and coming artists swear by it. But I think that is the sickest I’ve ever gotten from paint, except for when I’ve used oil with turpenoid/turpentine/“nontoxic” turpenoid/Alkyd/Galkyd. Please let me know if you have had such an experience with NovaColor. One thing I’d suggest is trying Sennelier Acriliques. Yes, they are more expensive than some paint. BUT they are so buttery, like oil, and HIGHLY PIGMENTED, so you will get the coverage with extra layers, yet can get beautiful transparency. However, do not use their Abstract line. It’s supposed to be less expensive to cater to people who won’t buy their professional line, but it’s terrible. I use mostly Golden and some Liquitex mediums (like the Ultra Matte) with that paint and it’s wonderful. My biggest complaint is that their caps break so I’ve lost paint to their drying out. That’s a problem they need to fix. Thank you so much for your amazing videos and IG, etc. I’ve needed them so much to move past my three-year painter’s block!!! You’re the best!!! :-) xo
PS That is supposed to say you will get coverage WITHOUT extra layers. PPS I am currently trying out Schmincke Horadam Gouache and it is suuuuuuuuper matte and has suuuuuuuper coverage. But, funnily enough, I’m now not sure I want it to be THAT MATTE!!!! I yearned for it but then am thinking that I miss some of the transparency of, say, Holbein (but NOT Windsor Newton, which is toooo transparent for gouache)!!! 🤣
I’ve not tried the Sennelier line. I’ll have to check them out. I’m still not sure about the Nova paint. It does have a strong fume and I’ve not had a bunch of tubs open at the same time. I’m just not sure I love them though I will use the paint I have. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the review Sandi. I love using acryla gouache because it’s so opaque, but because it only comes in small tubes and is very expensive, I use it only in my sketchbook or on small sheets of paper. @@sandihester oh that’s great, so excited for paints that don’t smell bad. I love acrylic gouache but the only one that is available (in real stores) is the liquitex brand. I always get a migraine after just using it for a background of an A4 size paper :( Have a nice weekend & artsy week
Very informative on the paints! I think now that I’ve decided to try the So Flat paints. I am really hoping I am able to grab up some Golden Mattes before they are gone. Been waiting a long time to try them too! Loved the video, the paintings, reviews and seeing you! 🙏 thanks!
Dang it! I thought this sounded like my dream paint! I love how it looks--your painting is beautiful! But nope, I have serious lung issues and can't do fume-y paints. So weird, my other Golden paints don't smell. Your review is so thorough and thoughtful, I appreciate how much time you took to discuss the pros/cons.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful. Hang tight because I found my replacement and I can't wait to tell yall all about this paint - affordable and amazing and doesn't smell to high heaven!
I love this painting so much! So sad about the toxic paint. I am new to following you. I just so enjoy your videos. You are so enthusiastic and give tidbits of info through out.
I always click on your videos so fast. Good to know about the so flat paints. I’m very sensitive to the smells too. Loved the finished painting at the end. That rug under the table is my favorite!
I cant imagine having that level of sensitivity to smells. I use the Pebeo Mat Pub paints and I really can't smell them unless I stick my nose right down in the container. The smell, to me, is a lighter house paint smell. I'm looking forward to trying the Golden So Flat. They offer a couple of sample sets but they're on backorder. Hopefully you and Grady can come up with a helpful ventilation set up.
I don't think I use to be this sensitive. But I am now so I just have to work around it. I did just find an amazing paint though that I'll be sharing with yall really soon!
I am naming you 'Goddess of Joy😘 I love love love your reaction to your beautiful painting and paints ' ♥️ I do watercolours and I am allergic to smells and I have perennial allergies so I am glad I don't have to suffer these issues❤️your sketchbook is beautiful
Japan they have the stuff they call poster paint but it’s more like gouache. What colors are very intense and the difference between the two paints is the granules are larger for the poster paint.
Was so happy to see your smiling face today! Such a bummer when one of our favorite products has been replaced. Especially with a strong odor and different coverage. I love the painting, as usual....and the little mouse is a great touch. Looking forward to your next video.
Just bought myself some of the golden so flat paints to try.. You weren't wrong about the smell! Though I do like how flat and matte they are.. Definitely need to crack the windows when using them!
I was so excited when I saw the notification on the new video! This painting came out beautifully. So much to see. It's a bummer about the fumes on the paint, but I'm glad you mentioned it because I work in a tiny space so it would probably knock me right upside the head. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! You are right - these paints wouldn't be for you - but I do have some I'll be telling yall about real soon that you may want to try!
i bought matte medium liquid and matte medium geli hate the shine acrylics have, haven't tried it yet amazon dropped it off at 9:45 pm tonight along with 2 wigs chemo took my hair with it
Great review Sandi! You save us all a lot of time and we get to enjoy your process! Please tell your husband it’s difficult for us all to focus when he comes into view!! lol! I mean we will try our best if it happens again....so funny❤️ so good to visit!xoE
Thanks so much for the review and your sense of humor. :) Sorry to hear about the smell/toxicity issues. Interesting differences: the SoFlat painting you demonstrated has a bold matte look, which is interesting, but you miss out on the texture/layering nuances you achieve in your matte fluid acrylics works. What other paint options are you eyeing? Have a great weekend.
As a person with Asthma, I really appreciate your reviews of the various paints. For some reason the Matisse Titanium White really bothers me too. It has a smell and gives me a headache. Not purchasing again. I have a few Matisse colors that seem fine but wont purchase from that line again. Matisse is so expensive to experience health problems. Im a Golden heavy body person and love Utrecht paints. Thanks for helping us out Sandi! awesome painting too.
Such a bummer about the smell. So sorry to hear that. Whomp! However, I love the work that you created the colors are beautiful. I love that garden scene!! ... and the table you did in the Flashe. Always love your videos!!
where did golden announce discontinuing of the matte fluid acrylics I can find any information are you able to send me link to the announcement and did golden confirm this with you
Sandy, thanks so much for your videos. They're informative, and I've really been enjoying them, and love the whimsical quality of your paintings. My question is: why do you prefer matte paint? I paint in acrylic or oil and like the way layers can show through creating history and depth. I've considered investing in matte paints, but I'm so curious why you prefer a matte finish. Thanks for any information you can provide.
In acrylics I like a matte finish because I hate the plastic look of acrylics - they just have a look to them that I don't care for. BUT I just recently found an acrylic that isn't plastic looking, doesn't smell, and is down right amazing - I'll be sharing ALL the details SOON!
I am so glad I watched this, I went to the art store yesterday to get the soflat and they were out, so I was going to order some today. I do most of my painting inside so I don't know if that will work for me. Thank you for your review. 💚
This is something I would be interested in using too 😍 I’m so glad you reviewed these and tested them - hope I can find them in France too 😻 Oh no!! There’s odours from this paint too!!! 😱 that’s so disappointing Love the look of the paints Heidi sent you 😃 Your painting is lovely 😊
I've not, but Karen, I've had so many people recommend it to me - maybe I need to try it. I have recently found a paint I love and I'll be sharing about it SOON!
I was listening to one of your other videos about acrylics trying too fast. I used to watch a gentleman who was an artist in fact he was a great fraudulent artist that painted pictures and passed him off his originals anyway he had these quick classes and used acrylics and he used a certain medium to keep his acrylics from drying too fast and to be able to get more use out of them and I don't know if you've ever heard it but he used .... K-Y jelly yep that stuff and I've worked at some and yep it works!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this paint. I had this on my list to try and I hope that the strong smell will be addressed my Golden. For my sketchbooks I love Paper Artsy paint it is a craft paint but very opaque, but I don’t think it would be good for paintings intended for sale. Big hugs 💕🐞💕
Thank you for this! I’ve become allergic to oils too recently. Total bummer. This saves me from trying these. I’ve started using some aqua oils and of course acrylics. The jury is still out on the Aqua but still new to me. They’re great but different. Holbein has some gorgeous aqua oils.
I enjoyed your video and your wonderful paintings! So sad to hear you’re having issues with the SoFlatt paints. Is it possible to buy the Flashe paint before it’s sold out? It’s a shame this has been discontinued. Did they say why? Take care and have a wonderful weekend! Love ya, Kenny
I've actually recently found a GREAT acrylic paint that I'll be sharing with all of yall real soon that doesn't make me cough and is really really wonderful!
In so bummed the paint was so stinky. I have almost. I sense of smell so I probably wouldn’t even notice it , lol. Another great video , Sandi. :). Kate
Ok your husband in the background was awesomesauce lol. Thanks for the honest review. As always your art is wonderful!! How would these compare (differ or similar) with Liquitex Gouache?
So glad you liked the video and the art! I've not tried Liquitex gouache but I have an artist friend who has and she says it smell strong. BUT I have a paint I'm going to be sharing with yall real soon that I'm over the moon in love with - and it MAY be made by Liquitex!
Thank you so much for doing this very thorough - and honest! - review! I'm really sensitive to smell...not necessarily in an allergic way, more on principle ie. if it smells toxic, it probably IS toxic and the planet doesn't need anymore of THAT! Also, thanks for the heads-up on the Pabeo (sp?) they were my next thought in my quest for the ever-elusive perfect matte paint..so good to know they're stinky too. I LOVE my acrylic gouache for the chalky-matte-ness but as a mixed media artist, they pose difficulties when i want to get layer-y....*sigh* first-world problems, I know! Am on pins and needles waiting for your discovery though! Always full of gratitude for you and your work xo
Thank you for the informative review! I always hated acrylics because they were so plasticy and shiny. Neat to see there are other choices! But I really don’t think I can own everything out there even though I’m giving it a good effort…:/ $$$
This painting is gorgeous. Have you thought about having prints made of your paintings to sell in addition to selling the originals. I would love a print of this.
Just out of curiosity are you trying to shy away from flashe or just experimenting? Seemed like flashe was the perfect happy medium! (No pun intended!)
GOOD QUESTION! I probably should address this in a video. You're right - I do love it and even though that paint has been around way longer than Acrylics - I'm a little concerned about how galleries and art collectors will feel about it - it's so new in this country. So for my finished (expensive) paintings I really want a medium that people are familiar with and feel comfortable with. In my sketchbooks I don't give a hoot what I use though!
@@sandihester I got my painting degree at ArtCenter in Pasadena. A teacher of mine exhibits in blue chip galleries and his work is in some notable collections. In a 2018 show, a few pieces of his work were painted in "Oil, Flashe" according to the description cards on the walls. I had never heard of it, so I contacted him. Flashe has a long history in the movie and sign painting industry, fine art painters have used it for years and years and it's known for stability. In other words, no problem in terms of archival quality. The crazy thing is he layered it, transparently, over the top of oil (OMG, lean over fat) -- and the look was gorgeous. I'm an oil painter, and I'm not scared of Flashe at all. Le Franc & Bourgeois will be happy to talk to you about it, they're great. Nice 'Taxi Hopping' on your nails, btw!
@@Citroen_2cv Thanks for the info!!! I'm quite familiar with Flashe's history and it's stability - I love that about it!!! But most people in America have never heard of it. I may still end up using it as my main medium - just not sure yet. I really appreciate you sharing this info here though!
@@sandihester Sandi, I was a director at an art gallery here in L.A. and one of our artists used Flashe - it’s no problem for collectors. Once we explain to them how it is compared to acrylic or oil, and they have a better understanding of the medium, it was never a barrier to purchasing work.
I don't notice a strong smell. I'm in a tight area as well. Perhaps I'm just used to it. I do have trouble with liquitex acrylic gouache. That stuff is HORRIBLE.

@@sandihester oh that’s great, so excited for paints that don’t smell bad. I love acrylic gouache but the only one that is available (in real stores) is the liquitex brand. I always get a migraine after just using it for a background of an A4 size paper :(
Have a nice weekend & artsy week
@@liesbethartlife I've got another artist friend that gets headaches with that brands gouache too.
Okay, you made my day with not editing out the video streak. 😂 Thank you for fixing my Monday!
You’re welcome 🤗
Do you have a good recommendation for a low odour acrylic goache?
Have you ever used casein
No
Very informative on the paints! I think now that I’ve decided to try the So Flat paints. I am really hoping I am able to grab up some Golden Mattes before they are gone. Been waiting a long time to try them too! Loved the video, the paintings, reviews and seeing you! 🙏 thanks!
Thank you so much Nancy!
@@sandihester might you know when SOFLAT was first available to the public?
do you mean flashe vinyl paint when you say „flash“?
Yes - Flashe vinyl paint
@@sandihester I'll start saving up right now! Seriously, I'm so glad you found a good replacement!
@@sandihester ohh what did the replacement end up being? I can't find the video! thanks

I love this painting so much! So sad about the toxic paint. I am new to following you. I just so enjoy your videos. You are so enthusiastic and give tidbits of info through out.
Thank you and welcome!
Thank you for sharing your opinion and experience with these paints. I bought a set to start with and I love them so much! ❤️
I always click on your videos so fast. Good to know about the so flat paints. I’m very sensitive to the smells too. Loved the finished painting at the end. That rug under the table is my favorite!
Yay! Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos that much!!! I'm also glad you liked the painting!
This was fun. Have you tried the liquitex acrylic gouach. It’s wonderfully flat and rich pigments.
Yes, my latest art haul I try them🤗
A fan sounds good to blow away the allergens, and what about an air purifier also?
I am naming you 'Goddess of Joy😘 I love love love your reaction to your beautiful painting and paints ' ♥️ I do watercolours and I am allergic to smells and I have perennial allergies so I am glad I don't have to suffer these issues❤️your sketchbook is beautiful
That is so sweet - THANK YOU! I'll let Grady know he should probably start referring to me as "Goddess of Joy" :).
@@sandihester yes he should start immediately 😘
I had to remind him today - that that's what he's suppose to be calling me :) - I think he's ignoring me!
@@sandihester 🤣🤣🤣
Have you tried a hepa filter. i have bad allergies and have hepa filters all over my house
Grady's been looking into something like that for us!
My favorite thing is when you paint through a window. If you ever do prints, this is one I would totally order!
Thank you Renee - I'm really enjoying that aspect too - being able to do wonky things out the window or a landscape
Thank you so much Pam!
Just bought myself some of the golden so flat paints to try.. You weren't wrong about the smell! Though I do like how flat and matte they are.. Definitely need to crack the windows when using them!
I know Jane - it's the real deal with the smell - be care and use those things in ventilation!!!!!
You are right - these paints wouldn't be for you - but I do have some I'll be telling yall about real soon that you may want to try!
i bought matte medium liquid and matte medium geli hate the shine acrylics have, haven't tried it yet amazon dropped it off at 9:45 pm tonight along with 2 wigs chemo took my hair with it
I have a question...does the SoFlat paint smell afterwards like on the canvas or sketchbook? Will the sketchbook be stinky?
I haven't noticed my sketchbook or paintings smelling after they're dry.
I wonder if you were to use an acrylic matte glazing medium with the SoFlat, would that help in getting a transparent layer with the SofFlat paint?
Great review Sandi! You save us all a lot of time and we get to enjoy your process! Please tell your husband it’s difficult for us all to focus when he comes into view!! lol! I mean we will try our best if it happens again....so funny❤️ so good to visit!xoE
This cracked me up so bad! I'll let him know :)
Thank you! I'll be sharing soon a paint that I've found that I really like - but you'll have to wait and see!
Ok. Looking forward to the next paint candidate audition. Really like the finished piece you featured with the SoFlat. We can see your style evolving!
This cracked me up Sally "candidate audition" - love it!
I think things like that are important. Supplies are too expensive!
Those paints are just beautiful ...BUT I have asthma and allergies. so I know they won't work for me - bummer! Happy Spring!
Well, hang tight because I finally found some amazing paints that I'm excited to share with all of you real soon!
Love the painting specially the patterns:)
Thanks so much 😊
Such a bummer about the smell. So sorry to hear that. Whomp! However, I love the work that you created the colors are beautiful. I love that garden scene!! ... and the table you did in the Flashe. Always love your videos!!
Thanks so much Michael!! I actually found a paint recently that I'm in love with and I can't wait to share it soon with all of you!
Hi Sandi, did the so-flat matte paints work well with the matte fluid paints?
Yes!
where did golden announce discontinuing of the matte fluid acrylics I can find any information are you able to send me link to the announcement and did golden confirm this with you
Sandy, thanks so much for your videos.
You're welcome! Make sure to check out the video I just did because I found a great paint that has the same consistency as this paint and I love it!
@@sandihester I absolutely will

Have you tried Nova Paint?
I have heard of the different mediums and actually have some. Thank you for the tips!!!
You make me smile so much; your joy is contagious! Thank you for sharing!
You are so kind - thank you!
You really need to get some kind of exhaust system for your studio.
What a great review! Very thoughtful and candid. I'm sure artists will benefit greatly! Not so much for an insurance guy.... Fun still! Well done!
Thanks babe!
Awe - thank you so much! I recently found an amazing paint that I'll be sharing with all of you!
Hi Sandi love your channel! Have you heard of or tried Hydrocryl paints? They’re supposed to be 100% non toxic. They’re out of Australia .
I've never heard of them - thank you for sharing that with me!
Thank you for this! I’ve become allergic to oils too recently. Total bummer. This saves me from trying these. I’ve started using some aqua oils and of course acrylics. The jury is still out on the Aqua but still new to me. They’re great but different. Holbein has some gorgeous aqua oils.
I just couldn’t get into the Aqua oils 😞
:). Kate
You probably wouldn't notice at all then - but then again, even if you can't smell it it would still be bad for you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!!!
Thanks so much Melanie! I've got a paint I'm loving that I'll be sharing with yall real soon!
Thank you for the informative review! I always hated acrylics because they were so plasticy and shiny. Neat to see there are other choices! But I really don’t think I can own everything out there even though I’m giving it a good effort…:/ $$$
I know - art supplies are so expensive aren’t they?!?!?
This painting is gorgeous. Have you thought about having prints made of your paintings to sell in addition to selling the originals. I would love a print of this.
Thank you!!! Right now I’m just selling originals- prints maybe one day though!
I'm going to design a shirt that says this is art not stains
I LOVE that!!!!
That's awesome to know Stacie - thank you soooo much for sharing that with me!
I don't notice a strong smell. I'm in a tight area as well. Perhaps I'm just used to it. I do have trouble with liquitex acrylic gouache. That stuff is HORRIBLE.
Aww that's a shame about the smell of the paints. They looked lovely on the canvas.
