I completely understand his decision not wanting to monetize on something Carpenter had created, and him refusing gave us David Hayter the best snake voice ever!
Well David Hayter just wouldn't have played Naked Snake in MGS3. David had already voiced Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty prior to Kurt being asked to do the role of Naked Snake.
@@angelothompson186 Kojima had always wanted Russell to voice Snake from MGS onward not just Big Boss, Hayter was who they settled with based on the price range that they were offering for someone who wasn't Russell and at least according to Hayter if Kojima had had his way he woulda replaced Hayter at each and every project it was only the money power behind MGS5 that allowed him to finally hire someone like Sutherland.
@@RogueDragon05 there's only evidence suggesting he wanted Russel to voice Big Boss which is why Hayter was replaced in V. Kojima settled for Kiefer Sutherland.
@@angelothompson186 As I just said according to Hayter, Kojima's tried to replace him on every project. While Kojima may not have had any actual chance of getting Russell involved on the MSX games cause of technological limitations or MGS because of the scope of the project that dosen't mean he wouldn't or didn't want him there. Kojima's never made any secret about Snake being based on Plissken and wanting Russell to voice him.
i call bs. he's an actor trying to pitch the idea of acting as some higher art form... its playing pretend. you can "slide in and out" of any impression. i can do my elvis impression and go right into morgan freeman or donald trump. its not a sacred art form, its pretend.
I was surprised they tackled this topic, never seen him address MGS. He didn't seem to recall Metal Gear by name but I respect his choice by not wanting to expand on a role he already did, sort of.
explain, in any capacity, how anything about Solid Snake, and Jack are the same beyond name similarities and perception by their worlds. then explain how he answered at all about being asked to voice over a video game character. THEN tell me how that has anything to do with "slipping into" another character. he said nothing. it was fluff. he's a bullshitter. this is why i don't watch people i admire in their personal lives. you can smell the bullshit when it's right there. the answer is "no" by the way. his answer is actually NO. Kojima wants to make a story, not borrow. he wants to show his love for stories and movies by leaving little love notes for those "in-the-know" to enjoy the reference or to highlight a specific moment incoming. the answer is going to be NO... Kojima gets the right actors because he knows taking from other things, makes your own thing, lesser.

@@themonsterunderyourbed9408 "He's based. They'll never listen to him." They'll never listen to him because THEY CAN'T. As long as we're in a "purely for profit" system like capitalism, they literally can't. So many people in creative fields like movies and video games want nothing more than to create art while not starving to death, but it's not possible because companies need investors or are publicly owned and are legally obligated to focus first and foremost on shareholder profit (aka stock price). It's easy to blame Hollywood Elites or Big Business Fat Cats or whatever you call them but literally the entire economic and legal system forces their hand.
@@TheMisterGuy Indie movies and especially indie games are a booming genre. But too many talentless hacks want to blame their failure on funding, not that they failed to make an entertaining movie/game. And too many talentless goons want to blame their failure to be successful on capitalism.
@@TheMisterGuy Hollywood is choking on its own bloat. Smaller, independent projects can still be profitable, but those quarter-billion dollar (or more) "blockbusters" Hollywood keeps churning out are hot garbage and keep losing money. Eventually, the pendulum will shift and the market will turn toward "creative" movies again... but even then, "creative" fails more often than not. That's the nature of the business... but when you can make a handful of smaller-budget movies for the price of one mega-budget movie, you don't need all of them to be blockbusters. "Godzilla Minus One" (the entire movie) was made for the price of one, middle-of-the-road Hollywood actor's pay... and even with a very limited run in the US, it's made a profit multiple times over. Just sayin'. YMMV.
@@Rex_Smashington " Indie movies and especially indie games are a booming genre." I know, I love it. I play almost exclusively indie games now. "But too many talentless hacks want to blame their failure on funding, not that they failed to make an entertaining movie/game." That's part of it but if you've worked on an indie project, problem number one is that nobody knows or cares about your project. There's a reason those big Marvel movies spend about as much on advertising as they do on making the movie. "And too many talentless goons want to blame their failure to be successful on capitalism." I don't know how many people falsely blame capitalism, but it doesn't change the fact that capitalism legitimately causes a lot of problems because it's a bad system. Let's say you're the boss of all the Star Wars crap over at Disney. You get the option to squeeze a few extra dimes out of the license this year by making some crappy cash-in that will erode the value of the brand over time, but will make lots of money this fiscal year. What do you do? Well, to keep your job and to fulfill upper management's responsibility to the shareholders, you can just make the money and say "look what I did" and get a big bonus. Or you can NOT make the money and have to justify not being fired with vague arguments about long-term brand sustainability. But nobody up there cares about that because once you burn out Star Wars the company can just put it in the vault for ten years and exploit some other property until that burns out. Because that's the most consistent way to make profit in the current fiscal year/quarter. And that's the job of upper management. So this artless hackery I'm talking about right here is pretty directly enforced by capitalism.
I will say that it was a missed opportunity in that Kurt could have developed a new character out of it and Kojima would still have been satisfied, but I am glad that he didn't take any interest in it, because David Hayter is our Solid Snake and I don't want it any other way. Kurt Russell would have done a fantastic job, though, I have no doubt.
@Lucifronz I think you misunderstood. It wouldn't have been a new character to him. Kojima said he basically created snake using Escape from New York and, ironically enough, Michael Bein to create Solid Snake.
@@slthjawa5062 David did the voice really well but Kurt like he say he's lazy he don't have time to do that kinda stuff so David was a better fit and beside Kurt want more money and that's not going to fit in the budget ppl be real.
What Kurt is arguing is timeless and his stance is correct. If more people thought lile this, Hollywood would be less bankrupt creatively and you wouldn't see constant whoring of franchises and studios trying to play it safe instead of taking risks like they did before.
Have you ever seen Escape from LA? He has a cowriting credit and I think it adds to my appreciation of this interview further because it's so chill and insane
I got a theory Kurt's awesome personality is the result of having a famous dad who was a trailblazer in going against the grain. Bing Russell went from Hollywood actor to pulling a baseball franchise out of bankruptcy and fought the MLB in court when they tried to swoop in and steal it (Kurt even played in the team lol). Check out the documentary Battered Bastards of Baseball.
On my last day of working in Beverly Hills for about a year around 2009 I packed up all my things & went down to the lobby to check out of my hotel room (in Santa Monica) as I walked in I happened to glance left & Kurt was sitting on the couch waiting to meet someone that was also staying at the hotel. It registered to me as I was speaking to the guy at the desk so I threw a thumb over my shoulder & said to the desk guy "Is that who I think it is?" Before I could glance back Kurt was walking over with his hand out to shake mine. What a great dude. We talked for a few while he was waiting, he told me what he was doing there & I told him it was my last day there & if I'd packed my camera & my sister that had been in love with him since the 60s would never believe me. I told him I had watched "Soldier" the night before & asked him if they cloned the kid that played the younger version of him (his son Wyatt) really cracked him up. Just such a nice guy to stop & chat with a rando 😂
It's incredible on how everything in Hollywood is, Kurt always sounds like a down to earth kind of guy, chill and just happy to create these new characters with his friends he gathered through the years...
Its respectable, with the new life given by david hayter, what was originally a "clone" of snake pliskin became its very own unique identity that fans love. It also gives me even more excitement for Kojimas new action espionage project, yeah its not gonna be snake and metal gear, but we are getting something completely new and fresh to love.
What a solid dude. Couldn’t have said it better, why milk an idea to death when you should focus on creating something new. Love that he took shots at the consumer driven people in the industry.

That was ironically and unknowingly the worst thing he could have said, considering Solid Snake is one of the most iconic video games characters of all time. Although he wouldn't have known it then and like he said he's a movie guy so probably doesn't give much credibility to games, especially back then. Still, funny how wrong the comment is in hindsight.
I think he didn't understand the question and that Solid Snake was a different character from Snake Plissken. Dude probably doesn't even remember being approached for the project, and if he did, probably thought it was for a video game sequel to Escape From NY. All that aside, respect to the guy for not wanting to rehash the same character over and over again.
It was more the character was a sub-product of Carpenter's character. Everyone would want him to be Plissken instead of Naked Snake. Which would be unfair to Kojima, and others. Summary: He didn't want a different project to be more of a spinoff than its own thing.
@@-pressxtostart- Metal Gear Solid had a good plot for its medium, and for its time. But to someone who actually makes movies and tells compelling stories, this shit is laughable, especially MGS1.

@@miguelc2164 You didn't understand his answer or reasoning then. So let me put it another way. Russell is saying that he and Carpenter in the Escape movies created the character of Plissken. They both made that character. Out of respect for Carpenter a good friend of his, and professional interest in not recreating something he's already done, he isn't playing the role or anything that is based upon that role again for anyone else. Solid and the rest of the Snakes are all based off Plissken, which is why he's not interested in doing it. Both because it's playing off Carpenter's creation and cause he's already done that and the only way he'd be interested in doing it again is with Carpenter. Now I'm not saying you have to agree with that reasoning, but thats his reasoning and that yes he very much does understand the question/request being asked of him.
@@RogueDragon05 you wrote some round about answer just to agree with my original post. It seems like you think I was knocking on your comment when I was saying the dude that originally posted “Kurt Russel would be a good big boss” didn’t understand the interview.
"I'm a movie guy". Monarch legacy of monsters I don't mean to bash on him, its perfectly fine that he's not interested in MGS at all which is really all he needs to say for me, i don't expect him to be interested video games
He did, He is basically saying "I already did that, That was a character that John Carpenter and I brought to life. I don't want to continue with that character, from that project, at the point in my life. I'd rather do something new and move forward not backwards."
He got it, but as a professional and a friend of Carpenter's, he's not going to capitalize and endorse another's creation based off of that work. I'm sure he's well aware of Metal Gear and Kojima's long running desires it's just something that personally and professionally he's not interested in doing.

@@RogueDragon05nah, he has zero clue about the game. And what about the game's character, other than a quirky joke (nickname) and an eyepatch (which is part of the game's own lore and have zero to do with the movie) has anything to do with the movie? Yes, zip.
I saw the full interview its not "Kurt Russell on Metal Gear Solid" its Kurt Russell answering a question the interviewer asked oddly so Russell seems to think he was talking about a game version of the escape series or something,
i mean it's almost guaranteed Kojima wanted him to do a voice that was derived off of the Snake character from Escape for Solid Snake, so what he's saying still applies. he would in a sense be making money off of the legacy of a character John Carpenter and he put together, and he didn't want to do that
@slick_Ric Not really. He's had no issue referencing or homaging previous stuff he's done in New works before. There was a communication issue here . Not saying he would have been down with it. The fact snake is called snake might be too much. But he definitely didn't have a good grasp based on what the guy asked
Total respect for his perspective on characters and not wanting to just be a show horse on demand. It's no different than other people. You don't want to bring your work home with you or carry it wherever you go. If he's not interested in engaging with someone at the time by being a character, that's fine. Again, it's no different than if someone just brought up something work related with another person and that person said "let's not talk about work". That said, because people are stupid about nuance and think it's either 100% one way or 100% the other way, I'm sure he does engage with some people (especially children) as a caricature when asked.
It's interesting how Kurt says, in a very polite and respectful way, exactly what is wrong with modern big-screen production. It's about making a product, not telling a story.
Wow HONEST as hell, i love it. Now I know why he wasn't really into redoing the characters, they're iconic for a reason. We need more of that thinking in Hollywood, more originals please. Not bleeding what's supposed to be iconic out.
And look at what we got. Solid Snake is almost as iconic as Mario at this point. One of the most iconic characters in fiction, despite being inspired by another iconic film character
He's right. It would have been downright awkward to have Kurt Russell voicing MGS Snake. Homages are at their best when they're allowed to be their own thing, and David Hayter was a key part of MGS Snake becoming an icon in his own right.
3000 Miles to Graceland a movie both Kurt Russel and Kevin Costner starred in, has a final fight scene where Kevin Costner is shooting a Patriot while wearing camo similar to ones you see in MGS3. When I saw that I immediately thought that MGS3 had to have gotten some inspiration from this movie. After all Kurt Russel is in it too and I'm sure Kojima is a fan of his work. I never see anyone mention this. I wonder if anyone here in the comments noticed that from that movie.
I'm surprised this is the first I'm seeing of Russell acknowledging MGS! His answer makes a ton of sense and I totally respect his decision. He's a great, iconic actor!
What are you talking about? The only rumeor he didn't "confirm" is if Solid Snake is based off of Snake Plissken and thats not a rumor it's an obvious and long well known fact. He made it very clear that he hasen't nor plans to ever be involved with the Metal Gear franchise and explained why.
@@HereForTheComments He clearly is aware of the franchise and has long since refused to have anything to do with it safe to assume he was approached. So basically he misunderstood the offer as a spin off from escape from New York and not its own thing… probably didn’t help they literally called him snake. Good example of someone in showbiz who isn't hyper-full-of-themselves or greedy. He understands & respects intellectual property and the art form that's attached to things of that nature. Wise Kurt Russell
You gotta understand that claiming or giving credit in the creation of something in Hollywood is very murky waters, cause it all boils down to money and who it is owed to and how much. Russell is ignoring the subject cause he doesn't want to put his foot in that water and ultimately from his perspective it's irrelevant anyways as the reason Kojima wanted him was cause he was Plissken and he would be expected to recrate that role in someway and professionally as well as ethically thats just not something he's interested in.
I love how Kurt did not just sell himself or just took a role for $$$ he wanted to do movies he knew people wanted to see and where he could expand his acting role. I wish more people had the courage to do this and just do it for the money.
New York 1997 came out in 81, Metal Gear 2 came out in 90, Big boss was inspired by Sean Connery, Snake was inspired by Michael Biehn. Kojima's inspiration towards Kurt is the code name Snake, his cigarette and the eyepatch. But neither Snake nor Big Boss have anything in common with Kurt's character. Kurt should have accepted. But he wasn't interested in video games, that's all.

The interviewer says "rumored" cause in Hollywood giving credit for the creation of something is a very slippery slope. As an interviewer he has to avoid any potential legal implications. Similar how a reporter says someone "allegedly" ran over someone prior to a court decision when there is public video of him doing so.
Man it's to bad most people don't see it like that, always wanting more of the same thing to the detriment of what made something great in the first place, IE : Ghostbusters, I'd love to see a new iconic thing.
If Metal Gear Solid movie/series ever got out of development hell, I still say it would be perfection to have Russell play Big Boss specifically in the cemetery scene from MGS 4.
He says absolutely nothing of substance or value towards what the video title suggests. It is absolutely clickbait, low hanging fruit attempting to get views off 3 key words
Exactly. Kurt had no idea what the interviewer asked. He was just rambling all over the place. Not his fault. The interviewer did a shitty job asking the question.
This is true artist. His characters live as movie goes and die or their chapter is closed when in ends. This gives them value. Probably observed what they did to Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and Han Solo...
Kojima's Snake was inspired by Russell's character, but it's way more complex than just saying "it's based on". And MGS games were as fresh as they could be. Even more.
Ironically, the visual esthetic of Solid Snake was mirrored off of Michael Bein (Terminator, Abyss, Tombstone). It is interesting to think Kurt almost completed the circle.
One thing to note that it is typical of some Japanese producers especially for anime to be influenced by american movies, and also then it is typical of hollywood to be inspired also then by old japanese movies and other places like hong kong (china) - which in turn influenced the matrix (where its style of choreography was being done in hong kong decades before).
On and on it goes, but sometimes it is just TOO obvious and you wonder how did they get away with it. I can understand what Kurt is saying here which is basically "They went and made a game out of it without John Carpenter, why would I be on board for this when it's just ripping it off and doing their own thing with it".
Today they don't try to "be like" that movie or game, they simply do a remake or remaster of it but with Kojima - his style (similar to that of anime) would be very inspired by productions from the west, maybe for it to be successful and Konami wanted the works to be similar so it can sell..
For example, Indiana Jones was not an original concept but was inspired by stories and adventures that George Lucas and Spielberg enjoyed as a kid and wanted to make their own spin on that genre.
Kojima would do that same kind of thing with his works but it feels totally on the knuckle (the theme for MGS 3 being a total rip off in style of James Bond, except it's not a parody like the movie "Spy Hard" where Weird AL does his own parody of a James Bond theme. Kojima was also inspired by James Bond, the game MGS3 was set in a similar time to the original James bond, so this is why snake eaters theme is like a James Bond theme (I guess?) but its not a parody of it (told in some imaginary dream sequence or something) it's literally in the same style of James Bond - 'coz Kojima likes James Bond and that's that.
It would be like Kojima making a game about Indiana Jones but instead of a whip he gives the character two pistols and instead of a man they had a woman.... oh wait. That's Tomb Raider XD But you can see what I mean, some things are very inspired by certain things and make their own thing of it.
Staying with Indiana Jones, if you watch the Temple of Doom - the beginning with indiana jones in the club wearing a suit etc it is Spielberg's homage to James Bond as he always wanted to make a James Bond movie but this is clearly an homage, not totally ripping it off, like they didn't suddenly change the Indiana Jones theme with a James Bond style theme or have a villain with metal jaws and call him "Solid Molars©" XD
With Kojima though it really does feel like it's totally ripping off certain things, especially with using the same names, or even just changing the names of things around to make it seem different.
A bit like how a bollywood movie would have it's inspirations from things but is clearly ripping off the ideas and concepts and characters of those movies, but because it's bollywood it will just fly under the radar.
if you go back to Snatcher, this is heavily influenced by Blade Runner and also invaders of the body snatchers. but in the style of an anime (and it being a videogame) these influences would just fly under the radar, avoiding lawsuits and such things. I absolutely LOVE Snatcher btw, but you can just tell it's blade runner.
When Kojima released the very first Metal Gear - The promo art was directly ripped off from The Terminator using the main character kyle reese as a clear influence to give the character "Snake" some kind of resemblance to a soldier that people in the west could recognise, to help it sell the game, this was more from the marketing department than Kojima himself however, but it doesn't help the situation.
When making Metal Gear Solid, the unfortunate inspiration/homage from the Escape movies is really apparent. The one-man submersible and eye patch and well just so so many things taken from it, it is really hard to believe it's not directly ripped off from it rather than "being inspired by".
It doesn't even mention that it's inspired by Escape from LA/NY, as if Konami were like "look, we notice the reference and inspiration - but we want the money for ourselves, so say NOTHING!"
To add more insult to injury then even the MAIN THEME SONG was ripped off from an old russian composition, but again something that Kojima personally didn't aim to do himself but more like the production team wanted it to be as commercial as possible and copy and pasted their way into production, not really thinking about plagiarism and that sort of thing - kinda how Japanese composers did the same with games like Sonic and Streets of Rage, in the same style and same tune of, but coz it's a game it's fine, it's inspired!
Metal Gear Solid is 100% the most original and unoriginal game out there, trying so hard to be a hollywood production that it literally stole most of its ideas from a hollywood production!
But in turn then it is also 100% brilliant and seemingly original!
It perhaps is also one of those things that has caused such a huge rift between Kojima and Konami, who knows.
John Carpenter had been interviewed about MGS and he said that he was pursued to go and to get suing Kojima about ripping off the Escape movies by the studio which owns those movies, but he didn't want to put a lawsuit out on it, he likes Kojima and thinks he is a nice guy and that was that.
So John Carpenter doesn't hold any FINANCIAL grudge against Kojima for it, nor is there any resentment or whatever - but he does understand it as being a kind of rip off and it is what it is, it's own thing but a kind of rip off of Escape from New York/LA and fans of MGS need to accept that.
Fans of Kojima and MGS simply will not accept this fact and think of Kojima as a god but some things are simply NOT original concepts, and these days it is even harder to come up with an original concept and where lawsuits are concerned it really does put walls up on creativity.
I am thankful that MGS was allowed to go ahead and be what it is (it wouldn't happen today that's for sure) I much prefer it over Escape from LA/NY, but I do wish that the lawyers and such could have got their heads together and perhaps acknowledge the similarities but work on this being a GOOD thing.
Kurt Russell play solid snake or big boss or whatever in a future game (the voice of venom snake in mgs v would have been PERFECT for Kurt Russell and would have really helped blend the two concepts together, especially since Hayter seemed like a last choice for Kojima.. which is MENTAL), or even a movie starring kurt as big boss, or something that ties these two things together rather than it be one of those moments where someone randomly watches escape from LA/NY and does the leonardo decaprio pointing from his chair meme and saying "hey!! this is metal gear solid!" and have no real confirmation of this except from comments online XD

He's based. They'll never listen to him.
@@themonsterunderyourbed9408 "He's based. They'll never listen to him."
They'll never listen to him because THEY CAN'T.
YMMV.
@@Rex_Smashington " Indie movies and especially indie games are a booming genre."
I know, I love it. I play almost exclusively indie games now.
"But too many talentless hacks want to blame their failure on funding, not that they failed to make an entertaining movie/game."
That's part of it but if you've worked on an indie project, problem number one is that nobody knows or cares about your project. There's a reason those big Marvel movies spend about as much on advertising as they do on making the movie.
"And too many talentless goons want to blame their failure to be successful on capitalism."
I don't know how many people falsely blame capitalism, but it doesn't change the fact that capitalism legitimately causes a lot of problems because it's a bad system.

To be honest he doesn't seems like someone whose into videogames at all. Dude's a Grandpa.
@@Bagman07 You mean like he's probably read ever issue of Guardian's of the Galaxy since he was in it?
I love how Kurt did not just sell himself or just took a role for $$$ he wanted to do movies he knew people wanted to see and where he could expand his acting role. I wish more people had the courage to do this and just do it for the money.
I wonder if he ever interacted with Hayter
“Have you paid your dues? Yes, sir…… the check is in the mail!”
This guy respect his audience. He doesn't think of them as his cash cow. Dude is real as hell
Thank you for posing this, it give a perspective in regards concurrent palworld and pokemon situation
Kurt Russell on why Hollywood is failing.
Hollywoods been that way for way longer then Kurt's been around.
@@RogueDragon05 Shit Mel Gibson has been saying it for the longest time.
@@MeatSim64 "Shit Mel Gibson has been saying it for the longest time"
Yeah but his problem is that there are Jews. And also black people. He's not complaining about how capitalism forces everything to be 100% focused on profit, which is the real problem. It's not studio execs being greedy pigs, it's honestly that they are economically and legally required to exploit everything for max profit.
they've always done that. The reason it's failing now is wokism. People just don't want to be lecture when they go to the cinema, nor do they want shoe-horned characters replacing iconic ones for no reason other than 'it's 20XX!'.
@@Yarblocosifilitico "The reason it's failing now is wokism."
If you don't know what you're talking about, you can just not say anything. You don't need to come in and announce your status as the biggest idiot in the room.
"People just don't want to be lecture when they go to the cinema"
That's a good point, and you're smart to make it. For example, the Barbie movie contains actual feminist lectures, and is pretty clear about that fact, and that's why it was a big flop. Oh wait it brought in over a billion dollars in its first three weeks. Thanks for exposing the quality of your brain.
Without even scrolling down, I just know how "mature" the "conversation" is going to be.
🤣
Interviewer: It's been rumoured that Metal Gear Solid is based on Snake Plisskin...
Hideo Kojima: Yea, it totally is.
hmmmm, so youre name is iroquois pliskin and not snake?
its not even a rumor its straight up obvious
The interviewer says "rumored" cause in Hollywood giving credit for the creation of something is a very slippery slope. As an interviewer he has to avoid any potential legal implications. Similar how a reporter says someone "allegedly" ran over someone prior to a court decision when there is public video of him doing so.
Translation:
1. Does not understand Video Games.
2. Respect John Carpenter Work.
“You don’t just slide in and out of Elvis”
_Hey-Ohhhh!_
What a worldly individual.
To the people saying this video a clickbait : Do you guys have a small brain?
He says absolutely nothing of substance or value towards what the video title suggests. It is absolutely clickbait, low hanging fruit attempting to get views off 3 key words
I do, the size of a peanut. But a really malformed one. Like not fully developped.
Definitely is 😅 The host asked him about Metal Gear Solid... And Kurt was completely unaware of the Series😅😅😅
@@tsohgallik he asked him about whether he got asked to do the voice-over for Snake. Derp.
Yes😞
It's nice to see not all celebrities have the sell out mentality. Props to Mr. Russell, gained alot of respect for him watching this clip 👍
He didn't answer the question.
Exactly. Kurt had no idea what the interviewer asked. He was just rambling all over the place. Not his fault. The interviewer did a shitty job asking the question.
Hes fully adopted the stuntman mike look though lol
I'm looking for a version without cuts, but thank you
Kurt Russell's translation, "Fuck video games".
Kurt HATES Kojima. CONFIRMED
More like barely knows his work other than he is famous
This is true artist. His characters live as movie goes and die or their chapter is closed when in ends. This gives them value.
Probably observed what they did to Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and Han Solo...
Kojima's Snake was inspired by Russell's character, but it's way more complex than just saying "it's based on". And MGS games were as fresh as they could be. Even more.
Ironically, the visual esthetic of Solid Snake was mirrored off of Michael Bein (Terminator, Abyss, Tombstone). It is interesting to think Kurt almost completed the circle.
I think he is inspired by a new actor each entry
Michael Bein-MG1
Mel Gibson-MG2
Christopher Walken-MGS1 and MGS2
Lee Van Cleef-MGS4
If they ever make Metal Gear as a movie, he should definitely be at least Big Boss, or remnants of it.
