FILM DESCRIPTION:
Literature professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) leads a secret life as a high-stakes gambler. Always a risk-taker, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Staying one step ahead, he pits his creditor against the operator of an illicit gambling ring while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a paternalistic loan shark. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must risk everything for a second chance.

Funny enough, the line "when's the last time you had money in your hand to pay a debt and paid it?" actually had an influence on me. I remember it whenever I have any form of debt, so paying what I owe becomes priority number 1.
thats interesting because I have some small debt, and never fully pay it off because the banking system IS debt, so I never see the point of paying it off fully when I know I'll just need more money (debt) lol.
that is dumb. paying debts prematurely is not only opportunity cost in other ventures, but you dont allow inflation to eat away at your debt

@@miguelfonseca1104 If the interest rate is higher than inflation (which it almost always is), then time will cause your debt to compound. Same is true for investments and other ventures. The only kind of debt (that most people have) that's even comparable to the kinds of returns you get from investments is mortgage. Credit card debt, student loan debt, etc. Forget about it.
If John Goodman was a loan officer, less people would be in debt. And I suspect they would be thankful.

I like to interpret this as John Goodman testing him here. He's considering giving him the money but wants to know if he's desperate enough to do anything yet. If Bennet says no, Frank knows he's still cocky enough to potentially risk all of his money

I think people fair to understand the significance of this scene/movie…..in my line of work I see degenerate gamblers everyday and trust me when I tell u this is exactly what it is no matter how deep they are they just dig deeper no matter how many threats u make even if u threaten them with certain death they will not stop……gambling is worse than drug addiction in most cases the only difference is most people who have that sickness only gamble in casinos and gas stations where u can buy lotto tickets because they know dealing with these kinds of people means almost certain death after they realize u don’t have the money to give them back
Everyone wants to play with their death, maybe this is this rich boy's way of playing with his.

10% a week is so bad and disrespectful. You can tell the Goodman character didn't want to lend to him. 5 or 6% would be more usual.
It's easier for loan sharks when they also run the game as most of the time the guy will lose to them before they have to pay the loan so they get it back right away. Even if they win a few times they usually lose. The problem is if they use the money to play at another gambling place.
