    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Literature professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) leads a secret life as a high-stakes gambler. Staying one step ahead, he pits his creditor against the operator of an illicit gambling ring while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a paternalistic loan shark. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must risk everything for a second chance.

I think what people don’t realize with this scene is that Jim really isn’t a gambler. He’s someone who has been given everything in life to the point he’s never had to work for anything, sacrifice, work hard, etc. He hasn’t experienced the emotions that come along with that, the highs, the lows, the tribulations. He’s not gambling for the money, he’s gambling for the feeling that comes along with it at this high of stakes. He wants to feel something.
It’s no different than people who climb K2 or Mt. Everest with no oxygen, they want to test death and feel what it’s like to be that close to death and to cheat it.
Death was standing right behind Jim’s two shoulders and he cheated death.. that must be one hell of a feeling.

*Obviously* nobody is arguing that Cosa Nostra members break rules - you're just entertaining yourself with a strawman argument on that one. I'm saying you picked the wrong criminal organization to attach that family-targeting claim to, which you did by using the word "mafia". That kind of behavior would routinely (but not invariably) bring about deadly discipline in the mafia.
Anyway, the burden of proof *always* lies with the claimant, so that "go look at..." nonsense is worth about as much as your strawman.

Had a friend in college who paid his own rent and made minimum wage and was part time.. He was a gambling addict and eventually ended up being short on rent in which he had to come up with the money by the next day. Played blackjack and put big side bets ($15 on each side bet). He walked in with about $400 and spiked a 270x win with 3 of a kind suited on his last $100. Needless to say he was blessed that day.

The red bag. The gambler in this movie had to have been ready to bet it all on red only to change his mind last second. Red is known as a lucky color and having to carry the red bag as well as having something red in your line of sight would've helped him mentally prepare for the final bet to be on red. His irratic decision to bet everything on black last minute portrays his insanity and will to chase the big and final loss which inevitably means the man taking his own life. Most people chase victory in order to win but a true degen gambler knows no one could ever lose gambling when playing with an endless supply of money. Although the gambler in the movie is not in any financial position to risk so much money, he was only able to walk away with a win by increasing his bet and playing like a maniac.
But then again, everyone playing roulette bets on black.

I know he dosent want to be tempted to play anymore and $ could potentially be a trigger but as a grown man who doesn't have a cent on me, it would be impossible to live. There was enough extra to be able to buy food and be able to pay bills etc.

yes in that specific case because those are the odds (50:50) since half the spots are red and the other are black.
