I don't think they understand what a foot of water looks like either. Even if my air intake was higher up I wouldn't want to drive through anything deeper than my door sills.
It's got to be the absolute basics of wading, so many more of these vehicles might have made it through if they just kept a nice little wave out front, instead of 'diving' into the water too fast. Staggering amount of damage will have been caused to those flooded vehicles.
@@topcat01 If you look at the time mark in the video, you'll see that the Land Rover entered the water slowly, and created a 'bow wave' which is then creating a lower water level behind its wake in line with the engine. The difference in the water height between the front of the bow wave and the back of it is nearly a foot. That driver knew exactly what they were doing, and, I suspect, would know exactly the wading limit of thier vehicle.

I drove through two feet of water in flash floods from storm Franklin two days ago in a BMW 320d and I made it through. I think I only managed it because I was following another car through and got the benefit of the water being disturbed. I was crapping my pants that we were going to be stuck halfway up a mountain in snowdonia. Unpleasant experience to say the least.
Agree, as fun as it is to watch there are too many spectators and the speeds that some of the cars are travelling down the country road will one day be a major accident.
I sense a tiny bit of bitterness in your comment, even though I myself find it a bit funny when these people with built off-road vehicles have not bothered to find out how to use them properly and just accelerate into the water with speed.

@@Raven16691 - well in an automatic if you're coming to a full stop you either engage park or neutral and apply the handbrake - people who sit with their foot on the brake constantly aren't doing the right thing, the best they could. Car is also more likely to roll in an event of a crash with no handbrake applied, and I've seen crashes where people then mistake the brake for the accelerator.

Dont slam the vehical in water. The air intake is made to stay out of water as much s possible. If you slam it in water, water will rush in and get sucked in. Since water is not compressible, your engine parts break instead.
Difficult to understand why people in £20k+, new vehicles think hitting a ford at high speed is a good idea and won't end badly. The Discovery TD5 driver would have been fine if he knew how to drive it; no use having a snorkel if you then drive like a pillock.
Electronic parking brake. The single worst idea by motor car manufacturers since the invention of the car. Speed + deep water - snorkel = almost certain engine death

When the engine takes on water and cant compress inside your pistons then smashes your valves etc and kills engines atleast we are on the same page ha

Mine was at the top like most cars, went through bonnet submerged. All it did was rip the lower grill off. M47 diesel though.
