I have 2 living walls exactly like this. They are hell to water when you plant directly into the felt pockets. The felt dries out the soil super fast, and you end up watering every 2-3 days. It looks beautiful though. I highly recommend putting the plants in nursery pots and then hiding them in the pockets. That way you can just pull the plants out to water and then back in the pockets they go. Also watering in the felt is super messy as the water runs right though and drips everywhere. I ended up installing a trough underneath to catch the runoff and protect my floors. So worth it though! LOVE LOVE LOVE my living walls!

That's a fantastic tip! Would make it easier to switch out plants as they outgrow the wall to I think.

    • @KittCatPhoto

@@katherinelandreth2191 It does! The plants grow so fast, that every 6 months I'm basically popping out a plant and adding in some cuttings from other plants. It also makes it easier to deal with any pests as I can wash and treat them when watering. My plant walls are a lot of work, but I love them, so it's definitely worth it. :)

A watering hack for something like this: Place a small cutting of nopal or aloe within the root-ball of each plant, with the gel of the cactus exposed. This gel will naturally absorb and retain water within the soil for FAR LONGER periods of time than any pre-made mixture. Your plants can feed off of the gel, as it works to retain water. To ensure the cactus wont regrow itself, just mash it up a bit before adding it into the soil - they're pretty resilient and can re-root if you don't.
This hack is used in Mexican orchards when growing tree saplings in the hot/dry climate. It minimizes water expenses and just improves the overall vitality of the main plant.

EDIT 1: Let me know if you thought the cost breakdown was helpful. I can do it for future DIY builds (when applicable) if you did.
EDIT 2: Also the plant I referred to as Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Jade') is actually a Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil'. The plant card erroniously identified the plant and I didn't check it. My bad!

Quick safety tip when using the push stick on the table saw. Always push on the piece that is against the fence, the the piece that is getting cut off. Pushing this piece can close the kerf, causing it to pinch on the blade and kickback.

Given the state of the plant market right now, 147$USD for plants isn`t too bad given how many there are! People are paying more than 10 times that amount for unrooted, leafless node cuttings of rare aroids right now. Something I always appreciate about the projects on your channel is that they use accessible, classic plants and makes them look like a million bucks, even if you can still snag them for a lot less.

I'd NEVER hang this on a wall - as that will get wet and moldy. Came here to say this. The term "Pothos" is really a mess, and is used to describe species of epipremnum, scindapsus and philodendron even though none of them are the same genus as each other, or a true pothos for that matter. They are all very similar in terms of care and growth habit though, and they all look great!

You could grow cuttings and make the pockets your self, which would already halfen the price. And if you have a big garden you could make your own soil. Also you could add an dripper hose with a coppling (maybe for bigger walls or garden walls that are hanging outside). Sometimes they use a ledge on the bottom filled with water, that is sucked up by jute keeping the hole moistered. Love it :)

That looks awesome and as always great instructions and comments. If you concider doing another living wall could you please concider doing one with lower plants especially mosses. I would love to build one myself but don't quite know how to secure the moss patches properly. Thank you very much for your great and inspiring work

This is great! Thank you for posting it. I recently adopted a kitten and he LOVES to play in my potted house plants and they're getting trampled. Hopefully something like this will help me save my plants.

Hey Tanner I have a trick for you, if you don't have silicone you can also use flex glue, it is animal safe and yes it actually does work underwater

I've built one of these and here's my tips:
1: give adequate room at the top, it's hard to plant anything if the top of the frame is too close to the top of the fabric "basket". I know you want it dense but it's better to let the plants grow to the top.
2: add some plastic or something like plastidip to the inside of the baskets, at least the one I bought don't hold water nearly well enough for your plants to be happy. But with a bit of plastic at the bottom to trap the water they thrived in my wall.

As always, great video and this is a cheap way of getting something beautiful a lot cheaper than a good painting and always changing.

You could use some outdoor gutterline on the bottom for overflow. You would need it if you also add a drip system for watering. Maybe a basin with a pump to recycle the water that syphons off? You could add a timer to control how often the pump runs. Just some ideas to improve the build.

Thank you for the ideas you shared in this video, Tanner! The video is at 14k likes so i am hoping to see you make a bigger living wall. Woooot!
Maybe you can make it extra, extra special by adding an aquarium in the bottom and making it aquaponic. :) i'm thinking of doing something like that but I'm a bit scared to tackle a project that size without more information.
Loving all your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

When it comes to plant walls the most cost effective I have found is using pothos. You can get big ones and break them up into thirds. It is expensive. I think my plant wall is around 500 with 40 plants.

@@beauar1 or you could buy a small pothos and take some cuttings when it’s growing well and just propagate those

I think if you used hemp grow matting would have been better because you could place plants where ever you want and even crowd them in. Also it's cheaper than the ready made matting. I would have also placed a small water bottle reserviour at the bottom back and used a wicking method to draw water up through the hemp matting. That way it makes watering easy and that also means this wall could be placed safely inside and mounted on a wall, without having to be removed for watering. Just some of my ideas. But a good build.

Duuuuuude I've been wondering if you were going to show us how you would do one of these. I would really like to see how you tackle doing one with moss in it as well! As always thank you for sharing your techniques, they REALLY help me out with my own. You've helped me skip alot of the trial and error parts of the terrarium world. Also I'm a landscaper and some of your information about the plants you use have helped me in my business too. You're freakin awesome bro and I'm SO glad you get to do this all the time, I must admit there is an element of selfishness involved there on my part lol

I've tried this like a year ago with moss. It looked great, but due to watering it soon deformed itself and I had to throw it away. Shouldn't have used a normal picture frame. Your video is great though, and maybe I will try it again. Even though I find it hard to water it properly.
