Generally speaking, your skate size is 1 - 1.5 sizes down from your shoe size. Hockey skates are meant to fit really close to the foot for optimal performance. There may be mild discomfort during the break-in process but they shouldn't be causing bad pain, and most skates now come with heat moldable materials that allow you to bake them for a more custom-like fit. Going up in size is perfectly fine to achieve more comfort but just make sure there isn't too much room for your foot to actually move within the skate, which would cause blisters and drastically reduce your on-ice performance. We have a great article that can help you find your exact skate size here -> www.icewarehouse.com/lc/skates/how-to-find-your-skate-size-at-home.html Brandon at IW Hockey
