- American journalist Evan Gershkovich appeared in a Russian court on Tuesday. Gershkovich is a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, covering Russia, Ukraine, and the former Soviet Union. Russian authorities have accused Gershkovich of espionage. Gershkovich’s team asked for him to be released from Lefortovo Prison and placed on house arrest. The court denied this request, saying the 31-year-old must stay in custody while awaiting an investigation and trial.
Quick background on the case:
Evan Gershkovich has devoted his career to the power of bearing witness through on-the-ground reporting.
When Gershkovich was in his mid-20s in 2017, he decided to move to Russia - and quit a job as a news assistant at The New York Times - so that he could report on the country where his parents had been born. He first joined the staff of The Moscow Times, an English-language newspaper, then the Agence France-Presse wire service and last year The Wall Street Journal.
At one point, he slept in a tent for several nights in the Siberian woods to cover forest fires there. During the worst of the pandemic, he spent time in a Moscow hospital writing about medical students trying to treat a surge of patients. And a couple of weeks ago, Gershkovich traveled to the city of Yekaterinburg, near the Ural Mountains, to report on the Russian military and other subjects.
While he was there, the Russian authorities arrested him for espionage. They have imprisoned him at Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo jail.
Ty so much for the info
It's the best of us that get the worst...
The U.S is normally advocating freedom of press, but at the same time continuing the persecution of Julian Assange...JUST ONE of many examples of American hypocrisy..
Will he be treated good or bad at Lefortovo?
That's what he gets for being a CIA spy.
Did anyone else see the video of where a criminal escaped from the same cage he’s in?
OMG YES
Yeah now we know where it took place 😂
It was impressive
Yep lol ❤❤
Trying to escape*, the banged him back down into the cage like an Russian wack a mole game 😂
Couldn’t pay me enough to be an American journalist in Russia right now. Easy way to never be seen again
The U.S is normally advocating freedom of press, but at the same time continuing the persecution of Julian Assange...JUST ONE of many examples of American hypocrisy..
Russia is better than the U.S. nowadays. America is the truly corrupt country.
@Desanpiss 24 it’s literally in the title
Russia had no right to unjustly arrest a citizen of another country, but if it happened, we should release him from Russian captivity
@Desanpiss 24 This is how the journalist worked for one of the American media outlets in which the journalist reported all the accusations and asked to return the journalist to his homeland, but Russia refuses to do it on the grounds of fictitious facts of espionage, which did not exist
Can we send back the basketball player to get him back
no we dont want your basketball player. Russia was happy to send her back to the US cuz even though she broke the law she didnt do anything real bad. While this dude is a legit spy.
Isn’t that little cell he’s placed in the one that the Russian guy tried to break out of?
Yes 😂😂
Yeah lol
The US whining about him, yet still doesn’t want to drop their charges against Julian Assange.
Thank you!
Ah that good old government hypocrisy lol. How dare you raise that unfortunate truth 😂
Exactly, and Assange just published information, he didn't leak or was spying.
💯💪🏾👍🏾👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Isn't he the guy who helped leak secret US military information?
He looks like he really wants to speak to the manager
What murica has done to other nations have been done to them. Sad but true
@Desanpiss 24 get a life😂
Russia is a country of terrorists. They detained an innocent man, who is an ordinary journalist and whose guilt has not even been proven.
U sure do like that copy and paste button
USA is one to talk on draconian freedom of speech 🤣
thats really sad he got in trouble in a foreign country for doing his job
Julian Assange: I know the feeling.
For real it must be horrible what they might do to him especially getting arrested in another country that’s our enemy
@Desanpiss 24 how
We must protect our citizens, Russia now uses terrorist tactics, because only a terrorist state can hold foreign citizens, hostage
Despite negotiations with the Kremlin, the U.S. government has not been successful in securing the release of the innocent journalist. Evan's appeal has also been denied, which suggests that the Kremlin is not interested in resolving this tragedy.
Looks to be in disbelief...
Honestly sad, he didn’t deserve to be at court 😢
Don’t go to another country then.
Lol but if someone did that to our country, you'd keep the same energy for them
@@mobinxd especially to sniff around military factories at a time of war
@@hurricanetasha1681 and lying the reason why you went to that country
For illegally spying on another countries military? Lol. If he was in the US he would have already being given life sentence.
0:17 this is a sad story, but I loled at how everybody is just staring at/filming him
when your friends see your pet hamster for the first time
Too bad he can’t dribble a basketball, they would’ve released more Russian criminals to be swapped for.
15 arm dealers and 10 druglords this time 🤣
@@jarredkrum9894 🤣 can you imagine how many deals have gone on under the table? I’m not a huge conspiracy guy but I’m also not naive enough to believe that there’s corruption at all levels of government and systems
Did this journalist know the Russia's laws before doing what he did there? It's the same with Griener. He knew he shouldn't have been smoking pot there, yet he did.
@Desanpiss 24 Obviously NOT a journalist lol
What does it have to do with laws if they accuse him of espionage when in fact he is a journalist?
@@orvalprosacco1951 Becsuse he was caught doing things that a spy would do and then lied about it saying he didn't. He claims to be a journalist doing journalist things but he broke their laws. Espionage is, in fact, against their laws.
stupid thing is he will prolly be home before Paul Whelan, so sad.
Let's hope he gets the maximum sentence. This spy got caught red handed.
A spy? You call an innocent journalist and hostage of Putin's regime a spy
Russia's evidence is nothing but lies
I wish your Putin got the maximum term
Sad but at the same time, people should know better than to travel to Russia right now. This was bound to happen
I agree. In Russia they often detain foreigners and accuse innocent people, so it's not safe there
If a Russian journalist in the United States had tried to obtain Pentagon secrets from third parties, he too would have been arrested for espionage. Don't make this "journalist" out to be an innocent victim. No one in Russia arrests Americans who do not engage in espionage activities.
And here we have freeing the basketball player for things she did ! And we have this guy being sent there for news
Sadly, nobody will care about him as much.
Exactly
Omg that lady played basketball for Russia she wasn’t just over there vacationing. They didn’t care about oil she had they just hold you for their benefit. The reporter knew better but he is used to being a white American man and getting his way.
@@92cgray get your facts right. She plays for Phoenix Mercury. And was in fact there for vacation…. And had drugs and got caught
Russia is a country of terrorists. They detained an innocent man, who is an ordinary journalist and whose guilt has not even been proven.
So it's not like we don't have Cia fbi in our news agencies
Do people not learn not to go to Russia
25 years minimum
An American spy posed as a journalist was captured in the meantime a real journalist Jullian Assange is in UK prison, courtesy of Uncle Sam.
@Desanpiss 24 Get a life, dude. Like seriously!!!
Is this what your Russian propaganda is telling us?
They though sending an ethnic Russian/Slavic to Russia would help him, nope!
Let's make a trade, wall Street Journal reporter and they can have a top nuclear long range scientist.
plz no prisoner trade again please dont give Russia all the people they need to have world dominance
But Jack Teixeira was just arrested for the same thing here in the US.
How?!
Holy Frick
I'm not saying this is but you're not famous they don't care about you rotting away in a different country prison. It's sad though.
There's just no way to get him home at this point.
@@orvalprosacco1951 it's so true so sad
He is wishing that he tried out for varsity basketball right about now 😂😂😂
Man that sucks 🤦♂️
It's almost like nobody can be themselves anymore🤔
"your honor, i plead being a silly billy"
He even looks like a spy.
And what does a spy look like to you? They're all different, it's impossible to recognize him from his image
Why is he in a fish tank ?
Why People still traveling to China & Russia & Iran & North korea 🤢🤮
OMG😮
He rolled the 🎲🎲
and lost
sad
U got skills at copy and paste mr
If your American stay out of Russia please
I agree, this is the only way to protect yourself from arrest in Russia
😢
Keep him locked up until they free Assange.
No prisoner swap this time? Didn’t think so.
What the heck did he do
accused of espionage of the russian government and sending valuable info to the US i suppose
Being used for propaganda.
He entered the country as a us citizen
Russia is a country of terrorists. They detained an innocent man, who is an ordinary journalist and whose guilt has not even been proven.
The Russians, as usual, came up with a bunch of arguments why he should be arrested
Jeez we don’t have any more high profile arms dealers to trade for him now. Shucks!
I'm guessing russia wants another arms dealer in exchange?
And the U.S. got a drug taking basketball player out of Russia.
Looks like they caked make-up on his face 🤔
Very brave man, hes only 32 too.
This is sad. I hope he gets released.
To bad he wasn't an important Basketball player like some other person was. He'd be released already.
Mmm...so pathetic that's the world we find ourself...
How about the marine?
🌻🌻🌻
Love these plastic boxes
welp that was it from him
That journalist laat name is not an american last name.
Get him out
Get this guy home!!
They have beautiful glass bulletproof case,
But the wrong person In......
Mr Poutine Galvaude sure made the cake in that box!! War Free press is not a crime.... we deserve to k ow what happened there, because they will not tell us without a fight to keep anything under the rug like nothing happend...
So chilling chilling place in the world right now..
Journalist degree is got to be easiest college degree to get. No need fill full requirements. Just write article and do more research.
... you get arrested too... no guarantee jail bail or free jail card
Journalism is directly related to democracy/freedom of speech
Russia is a country of terrorists. They detained an innocent man, who is an ordinary journalist and whose guilt has not even been proven.
We gonna trade for him to?
15 arms dealers and 10 drug kingpins🤣
Relax behind the glass kid your not going anywhere soon
Stop. Traveling. To Russia!!!
Tuff
Obiden got Brittany grins out of Russia but not the two other men being out there for years who served our country I bet he does not get this reporter out either
The only way to free this guy is if Ukraine wins and Russia weakens. Then Putin will no longer be able to dictate his terms
They may trade 10 arms dealers and 15 drug lords this time lol🤣
You know that the political powers will leave him their. Since he's not famous.
I doubt they'll just give it up. There just aren't any options available to bring him home right now.
😭😭😭😭😢😥😭😭😢😥😢😥
Ruzzia is a country of terrorists. They detained an innocent man, who is an ordinary journalist and whose guilt has not even been proven
You know the way how he's in the glass box and everyone around him is like he's some caged animal in a zoo and they need he's dangerous when all he's doing is just chilling.
It feels very weird to me for some reason and that's just what it looks like to me so I'm just gonna say it.
I liked the werewolf in France one better.
Is america gona trade 5 arms dealers and 10 drug lords to get this guy back? Like they did to get the basketball lady back.
I promise you I'm never going to Russia
It's the right thing to do.
double citizen
Scary. Hard to be a reporter. Just reporting, that's all😢
Yes, it really is a difficult and dangerous job
We were comparing this situation with pirates of Somalia. It really could happen. Russia could do literally anything….
I really hope our government will do everything it can in order to not only get this guy home, but also to prevent such provocations from ever happening. If Russians still don't understand their place - we should show them. Providing more military aid for Ukrainian army would be a great thing to do in this case. Because Putin only understands power, without being stopped by someone he won't ever stop.
I agree, they're allowing themselves too much right now.
Send him to the gulag
I have no patience for people going to countries they know, will literally put you in jail for decades for a perceived wrong. 🙄🙄🙄
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has resulted in the probability of being killed or captured for ransom being the same as it is in Somalia. The daily fighting and absence of legitimate authority make life in these territories very dangerous.
Let him go
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🐍
Of course he is innocent.
It's obvious to all sane people.
Well this has a simple solution stop going to Russia.
Really? Wanting to release an American Journalist to be released and not a retired marine? Give me a break
His feet stink because he was born in 1991and wears Sperry Topsider Boat shoes with no socks.
Is there a fair trial in Russia? The journalist was arrested on fictitious charges, which is equivalent to holding a man hostage, we must fight for our citizens, if we do not enter into conflict directly, we must help the army of Ukraine, which is fighting the aggressor
I stop believing in Russian democracy and truth. They don’t follow any international rules. Why we have to believe them?
Agreed
ALL Americans were warned multiple times to leave Russia but he chose to risk it for making money. While the charges may or may not be true, he was well aware of the risk.
I.muslim from Thailand ilove Russian i like Putin too ☝️☝️
You love terrorists, war criminals and those who deprive people of their rights
Mash Allah brother!!! I am a Russian muslim
Can people please stop going to Russia. It’s not worth it
I think it is better for Russia to isolate itself from civilization
If he was gay or trans, Biden would be on this.
"Very funny". I'm sure the U.S. will do everything it can to get him back
@@orvalprosacco1951 I was being sarcastic. But I do agree with you and hope and pray for his safe return.
He's a spy
we must continue to send our weapons to Ukraine. Ukrainians must defeat Putin's regime and end Putin's permissiveness
We need to help Ukraine as much as we can to help drive these devils out of Ukraine!
I understand that journalists love to go into countries like this and can really boost their careers but why chance it? I kinda don't feel bad for them because they know the dangers. Doesn't make it right but you don't have any rights as an American there. I wish people from other countries felt that way about coming to America too but they seem to not have to abide by our laws like we do in their countries.
Probably thinks he will get released for another Russian prisoner and this will look great on his resume
It is not advisable to go to Russia in principle. Any foreigner there can be detained simply because he seems suspicious

What sucks is this only happened because of the war in Ukraine.. he’s just a bargaining tool.. also it’s bad when you have your own citizens and media saying it’s not right. He’s lived there a long time obviously and is well known there
Don’t you understand that Ukraine won’t go on the negotiations with Russian unless Putin’s army leaves their territories?
Our government should do more in order to get Evan back home. It's not enough just to say that he was unlawfully detained, everyone knows it already. We've got to make it clear to russians that such provocations will only hurt them. Providing more military aid for Ukrainian army should do it, but in the end these problems will really end only with Putin's despotic regime being destroyed.
Russia has always been wary of foreigners, and the war in Ukraine had nothing to do with it.
Everyone says he is a journalist for the WSJ, but I can find no published articles written by his name on their website. Obvious and poor cover story.
Look on other sites, what's the problem?
Prayers for him! 🙏❤️💯. God bless everyone and love you all! Make sure you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour everyone! He is coming soon! Don't be left behind! Accept and believe in Jesus Christ! John 3:16, Revelation 20:15, 1 Corrinthians 15 1-4, Romans 10 9 and 10, Ephesians 2 8 and 9 JESUS LOVES YOU!
