You know a series is an instant classic when it gives you a new persona. I’ve been acting like a mob aristocrat since this masterpiece
real
Facts
Honestly I just wanna go around acting like the gospel now. I wish he was in more episodes. Fingers crossed for him being a bigger character in season 2 🤞
If Peaky Blinders and Ozark had a fresher, faster paced, more humorous sibling this would be it.
I hope we get ten seasons.
Haven’t you heard, folk are tipping Theo James to be the next 007. If this is the case, 2 seasons may be the max we get.
Binge watched it over 2 sittings and enjoyed it so much I'm going to rewatch it this weekend, something I almost never do without at least a year+ gap. It's not perfect in terms of narrative and character, but it's just so god damn fun, stylish, well edited, fantastically paced and enjoyable.
Absolutely one of the best things Netflix have ever commissioned. I just hope they have the good sense to go for another series.
I have to admit, I was very skeptical of this series. But I'm 4 episodes in and it's basically the best thing I've watched on Netflix for a long time
agree
Just finished it last night, definetly one of the better shows i have seen over the past couple years, cant wait for season 2!
Couldn't agree with you more huge guy Richie fans. I've seen all his movies multiple times, and I'm on my second run of this show. It's amazing. Cheers mate! For across the pond... 🗽
I personally loved the film (The Gentlemen | 2019) more. Plus, you'd find a lot of parallels from the original film itself which kinda makes you say "well I've already seen this" at times, but the series is definitely fantastic and is definitely up there in terms of series Netflix made. I wouldn't be watching a video essay about it to partially relieve my post-series depression (lol) if it wasn't THAT GOOD.
And yes, like others, I'm watching it again upon finishing this comment.
The Gentleman was fantastic thumbs up
Kaya Scodelario OMG a very great performance and Theo James i know him from The Time Traveler's Wife and others stuffs good serie indeed
Funny they had Gus from breaking bad as the big time meth dealer
Yeah, I'm guessing that was intentional, lol.
I love the guy richie style even that King Arthur film was decent not a classic but decent and this is a 8 hours of Guy Ritchie that style translated really well to tv just as punchy and dense as should be …. It needs a second series desperately but I will happily wait for it if they can hold the quality
No character ark, felt like I was watched GTA. Mission complete, next mission, fetch quest, betrayed by mission character, next mission… yawn.
It's 'arc' you numbwad.
And yet I have played every GTA
And yet I played every GTA
I totally agree !!! The best Netflix season of a series I’ve watched to date !!! I’ve recommended comfortably to quite a few people and I too will be watching again. For me this will be my second go through and I wouldn’t doubt if I watch it again just before season 2 comes out!! They have to do a 2nd season.
Easily the BEST Series I have watched in nearly a decade
I really loved this show and really hope it gets green lit for season 2 , it’s really a breath of fresh air
The only thing I didn't like about this show was the ending. It felt like they wanted characters to end up at a certain stage, but it didn't feel they arrived there themselves. It's like writer just forced them to make decisions that they wouldn't make themselves.
To be specific, the whole series was setting up Edwina taking down the glass family. Yes, there were no options left in the end, but I say that's because of lazy writing. The amount of shit these guys pull off, almost nothing is impossible. And then, we get duke's heel turn with his complete alignment with the Glass family.
While I live a good villain/anti-hero story, this one seemed off. Duke never killed unnecessarily during the entire show, and the final shot of him executing Collins seems so weird. It's as if the story was written for one character, and ending for another. I think they changed their mind in the end & decided to resolve Glass & duke's conflict to not hurt potential for future seasons.
For me personally, it would have been immensely satisfying to see glass family destroyed. The ending we got just left a bitter taste in my mouth
Loved it, but the ending rang hollow and seemed rushed. There needed to be more of an arc for Ed to reach his criminal potential. Adore Suzy's character, women invariably don't get so well written normally in Ritchie world. I feel Suzy was the most multifaceted character.
@@davepike7546 Yeah, Susie is most consistent & well-written. No fault there. But I don't see duke being Ok with Susie amassing more power over him after she basically decided to murder his entire family just because duke gave a list of lords to Johnston.
I think a better arc for her would've been starting from bottom & working with duke to regain her status, after glass family was destroyed. But here, she is basically unchanged, and whatever friction she had with duke is also gone now, as I believe this changed duke would be more than happy to murder jedro
He didn’t kill for no reason he stole his money and made suzzie turn on him Collin’s ruined the some what trust they had for each other when the boxer beat up Jack the ending was a stretch tho like everybody just gone accept these offerings from ppl that stole from them, beat them up, the girl just shot him, then Johnston knew they knew that he was the sabotaging the operation he just gone openly trust that it wasn’t a set up and I didn’t like how the beard guy who was trying to kill his brother was just so patient and just left because the father called the phone
The last kingdom is perfect imo.
"it's been emotional" is a pretty common thing people say
Honestly I'm gonna watch the rest before I continue this video. But you get a like for simply loving thos show. A minute in and I'm informed of what's to come. Good vid so far.
I loved it......will watch it again,
Tbh they should have turned this into a love story. The only part that remotely makes any sense in this show is the chemistry btw Susan and Eddie, the rest is kid’s gangster game.
You're an idiot.
The whole thing does work better with Eddie and Susie working together. They have awesome chemistry so maybe it's something they can explore in the second season, if they get one. Coz you know, Netflix.
Just finished it. Amazing.
I love Guy Ritchie’s work ever since lock, stock at the turn of the century and I always loved that he doesn’t spoon feed you a story. You consume and digest it for yourself. This series is a prime example of that.
For me, this show was a B- at best. The settings and wardrobe were the best bits for me, a Guy Richie movie is all about 1) memorable, colorful characters 2) great dialogue 3) unforgettable needle drops and soundtracking. This series missed on all three cylinders for me. To me, it felt more like Guy Richie fan fiction.
Lmao no.
It's way too predictable and keeps reusing "jokes"
It's an average show at best I completely agree. It's not even close to breaking bad, the wire or sopranos.
The film was fantastic so I did wonder if the series would live up to it, but yet again Guy Ritchie has pulled it off with a great cast and bang on storyline
No woke or politics 😊
It's nice to hear you sound happy with a bit of modern entertainment 😁
We need a series asap.
What’s your thoughts on kaya? You was pretty harsh before the show dropped? I personally thought it was fantastic!!
She's good in this, but outside of this show I have never found a single thing I liked her in.
On episode 5 , loving it so far . Feels refined from his past experiences. I really like the vinnie jones and dukes mother , definitely see the sexual tension, nice to see vinnie , I’m not such a menacing , but mentor and wise man role
About halfway through I described it as "Mobster of the week". If you do that for 20+ hour long episodes then it gets old and tired quick.
8 episodes though and the whole thing feels fast and punchy, everything feels like it has purpose. There's very few open loops, it's not overly complicated.
The story loop kinda feels like a GTA story. Main character needs thing, gateway character introduces someone who can do thing, they agree if they get something in return, chaos ensues, main character doesn't get what they wanted but does still get something. Meanwhile there's a hint of a bigger story, which you feel like you'll definitely see a resolution to in the end.
The best part for me is that it sets up a season 2 without leaving any cliffhangers or mysteries. Just interesting questions.
The Gentlemen is fantastic but definitely not Netflix's best ever series, that title absolutely belongs to Arcane
Haven't seen arcane but I want to give a shout out to Kingdom (the Korean show)
Agreed - this show was brilliant , best thing on Netflix right now
It is rather good, not plausible at all but highly enjoyable
Cracking series - a real breath of fresh air. Guy Ritchie doing what he became famous for.
I love this show !
It looks good and has some great scenes now and then, but there was way to many characters and many of the things that happened throughout, could've been avoided, If they didn't make stupid decisions.
Way to many storylines as well imo.
I'm guessing you're new to Guy Ritchie
@@broughy23 guy can be a bit too clever for his own redundant long expected outcome at times, big fan of lock stock and snatch, but only a handful of times where he has tried to pull off the spectacular has it showed on screen.
This tv show is pretty good. Not excellent, but the prison home comforts scene are absolutely ridiculous. The repetitive border crossing with the statues would have been flagged up very quickly too, and it does lose its way here and there.
Overall its certainly well worth watching, if you can suspend logic for long enough.
😊 Finally… something delicious.
How do you feel, after decades of starvation? Satisfied? Satiated? Circumspect?
🙏 Please, let these and others be the beings of a new age. Let us continue to turn this corner… and let this Oscar Season be free of Slaps 😅
I loved the movie but didn’t like the show!
The movie better in my opinion but the show is pretty good
Started to wach, 3.6 Roentgen: Not great, not terrible. Then Giancarlo Esposito shows up, he's not even a good actor, he had a just one memorable role (Gus Fring) but he's not the epitomy of an anthagonist (at least here he does'nt have to speak spanish, as he didn't care to learn after more than 10 season playing an spanish spaking character as Fring). Thank you no thank you.
The movie had insteresdtes and laughing from beggining to end, this is meh
Yeah whatever. My wife and I watched It all the way through after starting, so your opinion is just that. But thanks for stating it as a fact, it wouldn't be the internet without such conceits.
Binge watched it three times already.
The film was great so I agree a series I'm a sceptic, this series scripted by same director Guy Ritchie is a awesome talent
Narcos is HANDS DOWN the greatest show Netflix has ever made, BUT The Gentlemen comes close, probably top 3 or 5. Wonder how many caught Guy Ritchie's various sly homages to Coppola and GF1 and GF2, especially between Eddie and "Fredo". 😀... far too many identical scenes (not least the montage killings at the conclusion) and even a tangential homage to Tarantino with the Nazi-fanboy Max Lord Barrington and "Inglourious Basterds"😀
It is good but not the best.
Couldn’t stop watching it! It’s definitely a class entertaining show! I loved the dialogue! The brummie Indian gangster was funny as, every character was well done! 🤯🤯🤯😎😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👍
Yeah, great character
Loving it had to join back at netflix no woke n politics in this series its so nice just enjoying a show with politics not thrown in ur face. Thank u guy richie
It's very "diverse" though.
@@StimParavane So is the UK.
@@Ryan-zv3os Only 4% of the UK population is black but if you watch TV or advertising you might assume it was 25-50%. This toxic woke ideology is both racist and sexist.
The gentlemen is an absolutely superb show. It's definitely one of the best live action tv shows i have ever seen personally. I desperately hope se get a second series. Thanks for the review joe, i'm off to watch it a third time too.
I thought it was perfect right up to the last scene, that ruined the whole show for me.😢
How come?
I dont want to spoil it for others but…. When Stan and Bobby sits down at the last scene is suggesting that they have been working together from the beginning to lure the Duke in? Seems a bit of a stretch to me, maybe one twist to far.
@@roberthennings That's not the implications of the scene. It's something Ritchie does a lot, showing that there is respect among enemies.
Ok, I’ll take it. Then it’s s perfect series. Stan never worked for Bobby👍 just making new business deals.
Not to rain on the parade but as far as I'm concerned, the best Netflix series is Dark.
Agreeed, so so good
He probably hasn't seen it. Many anglophones hate it just for being German spoken
What about the arcane
Depends on your viewing taste, so no parades have been rained upon.
@@Slurped836 Very diplomatic of you, Mr. Wells
Mate, it's an above average TV show for sure but it's not great. It's very predictable, like REALLY badly. I've watched 5 episodes so far and ive been able to guess so much stuff.
Without spoiling anything it seemed like the show thought it was being clever and coy not naming the rat while they discussed how to deal with the rat. It's like come off it I guessed who the rat was ages ago.
So yeah, it's alright.
*in your opinion.
@@JoeTheUberGeek everything I said is my opinion except for that the show is predictable. That's objectively true, if you've watched even just a handful of movies and TV shows you can see a lot of it coming
@@thatoneguychad420 nah that's still your opinion
@@somebody2659 that it's predictable? I dunno if that can be an opinion because the scenes and dialogue, tropes and other things that telegraph what is going to happen are the same but just because some people don't pick up on it doesn't mean it isn't there.
If there's a hidden message in a painting but only people who've lived in a certain country get it, it's still there even if not everyone sees it.
I could be wrong but that's how I see it.
@@thatoneguychad420 that's fair enough but if some people agree on something and some don't it's an opinion
It was stylish and funny at parts but I found it kind of meh
Did you like any of his films just for more context?
Amazing show!!
The first three episodes were really good and then it became flat and boring sadly like a typical tv series
its nice and entertaining and not at all frustrating but it does not even close to master pieces like "arcane" or "blue eye samurai" dont make me laugh.
A fabulous series a welcome breath of fresh air
No. Its not. Decent. Greatest ever - that's a stretch
*netflix. Yes it is.
Not everywhere, but on netflix. Yes.
I just finished watching the series, I love it!
But, the movie has nothing to do with the series? I was hoping to see Micky Person 😔
Guy Ritchie is hit and miss. The gentlemen 2019 was top notch and this series extension doesn't disappoint. Guy Ritchie at his best.
Loved his Sherlock Holmes adaptation and I did not have high expectations.
No. Saw the first episode, never again.
Pity, the movie was the best I've seen in the last 15 years.
Yes. One of the best things I've seen come from netflix.
Brilliant programme, ending wasn't great though.
Disagree with that, but each to their own.
Best show I've seen on Netflix, EVER.
It's a good one but far away from great or perfect. Also at least 2 episodes were there to stretch the time with boring side quests which I disliked the most.
Hard-disagree, but it's all subjective.
I’m sorry but the show is not even Netflix’s top 10 best.. it wasn’t even as good as the movie.. overall it was just fine.
That's just ridiculous.
@@JoeTheUberGeek you are ridiculous... He's right*
It was far better than the film.
This show is really good. Among the ranks of Narcos
@@wardjunior1450yeah its more fluid . Feels more like snatch
absolute hyperbole
best show is narcos / blue eyed samurai / arcane
somebody hasn't watched "you" and "house of cards"
House of cards ended up like dogshit
yet still better than 'the gentlemen'@@vajidali530
HOC started on fire, and fell off a cliff. The Gentlemen, however, they could never make another episode and it still smacks both series you mentioned.
That said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I didnt like it and some scenes way way way over the top. I've seen way better
Best show ever? Ridiculous take.
I know it's subjective, but the film was so much better.
I said best netflix show ever, not best show ever.
... I was about to listen to the vid to see what was so great about this show, then i saw, 'by Guy Ritchie' and straight away I knew i'd hate it. Ritchie has made nothing but typical holywood garbage for a very long time. He made a good movie once... now he's just a sellout.
Thats like getting mad at ferrari for making another sports car - thats what they do - in the same way gangster type films are his style 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Its guy riches worst work. By his standards it's pretty bad
