Also: Diamonds are considered the hardest mineral, not for their durability, but for how difficult it is to scratch them. That's what Hardness means in terms of mineral stats.
The whole thing about Geovanni being a Normal type Gym Leader, and having a Tauros, Tauros was absolutely terrifying in Gen 1 due to Critical hit chances being affected by speed if I'm not mistaken.
9:23 From the moment I learned about Freeze-Dry being a move, I've been of the belief that Cut should've been turned into a Steel type move that's super effective against Grass.
If this could be a series, definitely would be interesting to combine psychic and fairy into a magic type Edit: Hot damn I did not expect this comment to blow up and still be engaged with months down the line lol. Thank y'all for conversing on it and liking it. I definitely get people's points that the combination is not as seamless in concept as rock and ground (especially given the balancing mess it'd be). I honestly just thought about it on the fly, but am happy that people have gone into the pros and cons, why it would/wouldn't work, etc. Hope y'all have a good day! ✌🏾
"Broken in a way I'm used to" is a sentiment I feel in my soul. I GM a lot of TRPGs, and so often I have to restrain myself from homebrewing too much, because even though I think it will improve the game, it always adds an extra layer of people having to relearn the rules. I happen to be prepping a Pokémon campaign at the moment, and I've resolved to not touch the type chart at all because anyone who happens to have memorized the chart will only be confused and hurt by any change to it. (and let's face it, the type of person willing to play a Pokémon TRPG is fairly likely to have memorized the type chart)
@@altariamotives16 Currently looking at Pokémon Tabletop Reunited. Tbh it's a bit more complex than it needs to be, very heavy crunch, probably as close as you can get to just using the Pokémon video game mechanics in a TRPG. It has all the same moves, abilities, and held items, which already is a truly bonkers amount of content, but it also has a rich class system for trainers that I really like. But primarily it's one of the few games that lets you punch a Pokémon in the face, as it were. :3
@@SugarSpice07 There's actually quite a few kicking around, nothing officially branded but a lot of fanmade games. Depending on how involved you want the mechanics, there's games that just have generic elemental attacks and are more roleplay focused, there's games where pokemon are glorified class abilities, and there's games that intricately represent as much as possible from the videogames and other media. PTR is the latter, it includes every move and every ability, most of the items, and a butt-load of trainer class options. There's even a class based on the RéBURST manga where you can fuse with your pokemon to become a hybrid form. I'm currently playing a Hex Maniac in my friend's game. :3
See, I’m a fan of both Michael and Wolfe, for different reasons, and obviously because they’re vastly different content creators, and tend to focus on different aspects of the franchise and fandom. So to see them collaborate is literally something I never dreamt of, but it’s now become something I wished I dreamt of. Seriously hoping that we get to see more of these collaborations, because honestly, I feel like collab videos like these are easily the best representation of the fandom as a whole.
You know they've collaborated before on Wolfe's channel right? Wofle made Mikey a competitive team and tried to help him get to master ball I'm pretty sure they got there in the end, but I don't really know
Fun idea for you, Mikey--rank how difficult the first gyms in each region would be if you didn't have a starter. How well do the first few routes in each game prepare you to face your first challenge, and which are the hardest or easiest to beat?
Gen 1 prepare you rather poorly, with the only two real counters to Brock outside of starters being Mankey and Butterfree, but you'll have access to counters in Bellsprout/Oddish for Misty and Geodude and Diglett for Surge Gen 2 is perfect, you can get Geodude and Onix early and they can easily handle the first three or even four gyms on their own, the only starter that has any advantage to begin with is Cyndaquil against the second gym of the first 3 Gen 3 gives you access to Seedot/Lotad and Shroomish to handle the first gym, Sableye in two of the games can sweep the second gym, with Beautifly/Dustox being a runner-up and best option for Ruby, and you could use Nincada or Shedinja, just needing to take out Voltorb since it knows rollout, the rest being unable to hit Shedinja at all Gen 4 have Machop found right next to the first gym which is a decent counter for the gym, can even trade it for an Abra afterwards that can be useful against the second gym's ace in Roserade, you can also find Ponyta right next-door or use a Starly now a Staravia from the early routes, After that though, it gets a bit complicated, as the third gym is switched around in Platinum to being Fantina and her ghosts, If you could get dark type at this point in the game it would be trivial, however, i can't remember any Dark types you have access to at this point in the game except Umbreon from the gift Eevee. In diamond and Pearl you have access to several grass types in the great marsh to handle the third gym Gen 5 is in a precarious situation, the first gym's leader is determined by your starter, but assuming you no longer pick one, i guess you get to pick the monkey that is good against theirs as that is what you normally would do? for the second gym you can get Rogenrola to resist the normal type (and the high defense cover against the dark non-STAB bite and crunch), the third Gym is hard if you didn't pick Pansear, with the only other real counter being Rogenrola who will struggle against Leavanny Gen 6, Easy enough, you can trade for a Farfetch'd or catch a Fletchling for the fist gym, and being so far to the second gym, you'll have plenty of options to handle the Rock types, despite having a Tyrunt. And the third gym have 3 good counters right after the second gym, in Emolga, Sigilyph and Hawlucha Gen 7 doesn't have Gyms but i'm fairly certain you can get a counter for all the first major battles without a starter. Gen 8 Wild Area. Gen 9, haven't played, but as far as i've been told, it's open what gym you tackle in what order, and you can go about do other challenges before then, you probably have options to use in battle. As for who prepares you the best, it'd probably be gen 2, 8, and 6, as gen 2 have two counters that alone can tackle the first 3 gyms, while the other two have access to such a variety that you will likely have a counter for the early game. The ones that prepare you the worst being gen 5, 1 and 4 by virtue of not having easy or any access to counters and in gen 1 specifically, few trainers to train on before the first gym and only 2 counters, one at an optional route and the other being a type combination you'd think would get demolished by Brock, had he had any rock moves (which he does in the remakes).
I think the reason bugs were resistant to ground was because bugs constantly dig into the ground to make nests and lay their eggs. Not to mention the fact that they also can dig underground to hibernarte.
I LOVE that you mention that grass type should just be just the plant type, because actually in Spain's Spanish it is categorised as such in the type chart, which always made more sense to me than calling it: "tipo hierba" (grass type in Spanish)
Ngl I always thought it was weird how not only they chose a specific plant to name the type after and not calling it just just the plant type. Makes it seem like every Pokémon in the type is just based off of grass lol
Same for in Colombia. Tipo planta is much better than hierba/pasto. Sadly, we still have steel “acero” instead of metal (same writing in both languages)
@@diamonddrawsthegoat Yeah, that's my problem exactly. Maybe it made sense in gen 1 when most grass types where actually based off on types of grass and flowers (and fungi for some reason) but now that we also have Pokémon based on trees, fruits and even leaves and paper, it should just be called the plant type.
I think splitting the flying type would be interesting, but probably a lot harder, because you obviously couldn’t give both the same weaknesses and resistances
Yeah, I've thought about the idea of a wind or air type too. I think it has a lot of potential, though I do think one of the main issues is that there's not a lot of pokemon that specifically fit with the new type. The only ones I can think to give it would be Gyarados, Rayquaza, the forces of nature, Fan Rotom, and maybe the Hoppip line.
Ive thought about this too. There’s lots of Levitate pokemon with boring secondary types like psychic, or pokemon that are flying but don’t have wings. A Floating/Levitating type would have been a really good special counterpart to flying in the physical/special split days. It could lose the electric/ice/rock weaknesses while gaining weaknesses like ghost/dark/bug. The theme being that their flight could be impaired more by fear than by physical ailments. Offensively it would be a bit more difficult to figure out what it should be good against without stepping on Flying’s toes too much though. Maybe take the fighting super-effectiveness from Flying and also make it good against types with few weaknesses like electric or water or steel or normal even if they don’t make sense lol.
Stealth Rock would change DRASTICALLY and that would have huge implications for Singles. Flying-types and Pokémon with Levitate would be able to ignore all hazards, which would be insane both for offensive Flying-types and Levitate users and defensive ones.
You didn't watch the full video did you? They explicitly mentioned that Stealth Rock would still affect Flying Types, even if it's not Super Effective anymore.
I now desperately want to see a ROM hack with: 1) Wolfey's Improvements to the Ice & Bug Types 2) Mikey's Combination of the Rock & Ground Types into the Earth Type 3) Steel being weak Electric
@@richardlandgraf1953 I'd actually remove flying from the type chart (And levitate as an ability) and make it an attribute of moves instead... i.e.: Whether the pokemon is grounded or not... Kinda expanding the effect of how Smackdown & Thousand Arrows works in principle
I personally think it will be cooler if both Giovanni and Brock were earth type leaders, it would both invoke the feeling of coming full circle and it would also show you how far you came since defeating Brock
@@maganhassan2627 Like sometimes there’s a lightning element, wind element, nature, energy, light, magic, tech or earth. Pokémon has got a unique collection of Types.
In the TCG, Grass is Plant and Steel is Metal, so it would make sense for those to be the official names because they make more sense than Grass and Steel
Just like when the Fairy type was introduced, it seems that adding, subtracting, or even combining types to the chart can bring about some drastic changes- some new and exciting, but some troublesome as well. Despite this, the idea of shaking up the charts a little more is still one of the biggest game changers Pokémon still has up its sleeves.
Well. The whole type chart is the point of the franchise. Adding Fairy was a game changer because it made poison pokemon a threat to something other than grass… which felt redundant because a lot of grass were also poison types. But especially against dragon, a powerhouse type that has quite a bit of resistances.
and also made ghost/dark type pokemons actually have a real weakness. Before Gen6, GhostDark type pokemons literally have no weakness, neutral to everything and immune to psychic and normal. But fortunately only 2 pokemon had this typing which were Sableye and Spiritomb. Now their only weakness is Fairy
I reckon you should keep Bug's interaction with Ground Scizor went from neutral to Ground and Rock to weak to Earth, and Volcarona went from neutral to Ground to quad-weak to Earth, this is a big Bug nerf sadly
Personally I think ice and earth should both be weak to each other. It’d be a unique dynamic that doesn’t currently exist and I feel either can do a lot of damage to the other when on the “offensive”. I also think that steel should resist Earth but not be super effective against it as while steel hitting earth doesn’t have majorly different results hitting metal with rocks or dirt do next to nothing. Also, cool move idea: Sharpening Stone, an Earth (or rock) move specifically for double battles where a rock type Pokemon sacrifices half its hp to raise the attack of its steel-type ally by 3. Very niche likely but competitively viable
I think the type ice/earth should be resist each other like bug/fighting. Ice has no damage against dirty and earth can "storage" heat, or "warm" in winter . That's why bug and other animals can survive in winter. Even plants can survive too.
I think a lot of the concerns that Wolfe had about like, how this would affect specific Pokémon like Excadrill is something that would be addressed by the devs if this change was made in a new generation, rather than in the middle of one.
You should definitely separate the flying type into the "bird" and the "air" type or just create a concept for the "air" type, that would be super interesting
I think Mikey did an outstanding job on this type, but I agree with Wolfy, lots of Pokémon have been carefully formulated with their types in consideration and combining these two types kind of throws the entire game on its head
I agree, I think the rock and ground type are fine to stay separate. Mikey made Flying way better defensively, and Steel and Water a little better defensively, none of which needed the help. At the same time, he kinda held up a middle finger to Bugs, because they lose their best resistance, and keep one of their worst weaknesses. Bugs did not need to be made worse, and unless I missed it, I don’t think they talked about that at all. The Sandstorm buff is no longer needed if the Earth type is better defensively than Rock, so it just makes sand broken-like Ubers broken for no good reason.
Another big side effect of this that Wolfey didn’t mention: Gyarados and Zapdos now only have one weakness each. Water/Flying types basically become the second Water/Ground type.
15:30 To give Bug types some leverage, their as weak as Grass types defensively. 33:40 What if the special defense boost was only 25% since Earth would be too good with 50%? Here's a video idea, what if Water was weak to Poison and Ice officially?
I don’t know if water should be weak to Ice officially (other than Freeze-Dry obviously), but I really do think Ice should resist Water. Ultimately, they’re the same thing, just that one’s colder than the other, and given enough time, one can freeze/melt the other. It just makes sense to me to have Ice and Water resist each other like Bug and Fighting do.
so the main takeaway I'm getting is, merging Rock and Ground into Earth would probably pair really well with the aforementioned splitting of Flying type into Air and Bird types
As a German, I grew up with Pokémon translations in which the Grass type was actually called "Pflanze" (Plant) . On the other hand, we called the Dark type the "Unlight" type for some weird reason, so...
I feel like Flying should be split between itself and Wind. Then you can have a more physical-based Flying for winged or bird-like Pokemon (Crobat, Dodrio, Tropius) and attacks (Drill Peck, Wing Attack) and the more special-based Wind for those that don't FLY per se but instead manipulate air for mobility (Drifblim, Tornadus, Hoppip) and attacks (Air Cutter, Hurricane)
Fun fact: During the creation of the first games flying type was two different types, bird and wind type. Later they decided to mix them because bats and flying bugs aren't birds and etc. This is also the reason Lance is a flying type trainer, he was actually a wind type master
Devision of rocks and ground in pokemon is what I really like. Because they are both so different even if they come from earth. Same with Ice and Water.
I honestly think you could do a further split with gemstones, rock is weak against steel but diamonds are treated as part of the type and steel has no impact on them
@@TheBTNah that would just create more chaos. And there aren't enough "gem" type candidates to justify it's beieng a type. And on the top of that: rock would loose a ton of special moves.
This change actually makes Aurorus actually decent now since It would resist its own Earth typing and stealth rock all the while not becoming weak to ice. No more 4x Steel and Fighting weakness either and it would be immune to electric.
6:00 Not sure that this 100% applies to the Ice type in Pokemon, but in general in systems with separate "water" and "ice" categories "ice" is more like the "essence of cold" category. Water is present in a lot of things, so applying pure cold energy to something will most often result in ice, and thus ice is also the easiest symbol to represent the concept of "cold", but the "ice" category in 90% of magic systems, including I'd argue Pokemon, isn't simply the "frozen water" category.
Or even better, if Ice-Type Pokemon are super effective against Water-Type Pokemon as ice freezes water solid. It doesn't make a lot of sense that water resists ice.
I got no beef with the Rock and Ground types as they stand right now, but I still do like the sound of this Earth type idea. Very fun video, gave me a lot to think about.
For Giovanni's ace in Rhydon, why not make it a Normal/Earth to fit with the new typing and maintain that as his unique Ace. It also helps set up stuff like how Rhydon can learn Surf for some reason.
Ground being my favorite type I’ve always been against the idea that it should be combined with Rock into an Earth type. I think they both have distinct enough properties that it makes sense for them to be separate, similar to how Water and Ice both represent the same “magic element” but are separate Pokémon types That being said, I think you did a good job combining the two into a type that makes sense.
That was a fun one. I wish Gamefreak had the time and balls to do something like this. Wolfeys expert opinion was also awesome. Love to listen to him go on and on about Pokemon :D He has just the right amount of "nerd" energy for these kind of videos hehe
Related to the ground type: I've always thought that some ground-type moves should have a special property that allows them to hit flying types. I understand why earthquake, high horsepower or earth power don't hit flying types, but move like mud shot, bonemerang or scorching sands should definitely be able to hit them. Also, remove the levitate ability and convert it to an atribute for all Pokémon that float or fly that prevents them from taking damage from "land-based moves"
why scorching sands though? it just sounds like the pokemon using it heats up the sand/ground nearby. Or does it actually throw scorching sands at the opponent?
@@rivershen8954 exactly that. In tha games the description of the move says: "The user throws scorching sand at the target to attack. This may also leave the target with a burn."
I think having two types being super effective on each other would be very interesting, it’s almost the same interaction as dragon on dragon or ghost on ghost with having strong offense but a weak defense which is a cool interaction. It would add some spice to the type match up chart and fun for team building with balancing that kind of interaction.
Absolutely make this a new series. There's multiple different types you could combine/separate to make your own new massive type chart. And bringing in different vgc players like Aaron Zang or nuzlockers like pokemon challenges, I'm really excited to see more of this
I’ve always liked the idea of having more moves that are super effective to more types. Make Cut super effective to grass types. Make Brick Break super effective against the hypothetical Earth type.
I’ve always appreciated that the Pokémon types are overly specific. I feel like if they added an “artificial” type they’d probably call it the “plastic” type
@@ZingierAlpaca96 Porigon is normal type because not only the digital world is something normal by today's standards, it is also normal because the whole line represents human technology (Technology as something man-made, not only electronical), with it improing over time. Porygon Z might represent several things: Some kind of technological apocalypse, like robots taking over the world, or some technology from the far future we do not understand. ( I knnow that this is a more secondary inspiration and might not even be the original one, and I also know the Porygon Z lore)
One thing nobody mentioned that I thought about when Wolfie brought up sand rush is pokemon with sand veil, specifically Garchomp. Sand veil works just like snow cloak where the evasion of the pokemon gets boosted, sand veil being boosted in sandstorm versus snow cloak in hail, and thus with the stat boost garchomp receives from sandstorm if it works with earth type like with rock it becomes bulkier and can occasionally dodge, it also learns sandstorm so there wouldn't be need for another pokemon's help
This NEEDS to be expanded upon. This NEEDS to be a series. More types must be combined... Edit: After thinking on this further, I feel as if ROM Hackers could probably get this done. Way better than Game Freak will...
I would definitely like to see some fanmade games use the Earth type with either the suggestions made by this video, or a modified version of them. I really would like to play through games set in each of the regions that exist as of 2023(including Hisui) so that we get a glimpse as to how much combining Rock & Ground into Earth really affects Pokémon in-game. Perhaps we could also get Pokémon Showdown to create a battle format where Earth is a type rather than Rock & Ground to see this change's impact on the competitive scene.
Why would Game Freak wanna do this though? Having the two separate allows for more nuance in the uses of both and gives them more freedom in how the two are distinguished in the designs. While some pokemon would definitely be better with Earth type, think about the type chart as a whole. This would just make Flying even better than it already is since it loses a weakness while keeping the immunity, but Bug (one of the worst typings in the game mind you) now gains a weakness and loses a resistance. If we're changing the type chart around for such an arbitrary reason, shouldnt we try to make weaker types stronger and nerf the stronger types? Say what you will about Fairy type, it gave Poison (one of the worst types before gen 6) and Steel the ability to actually be useful offensively while nerfing the really strong at the time Dragon and Fighting types. This just buffs the stronger types while giving one of the weaker types a bone (Ice) and kicking the other one (Bug) into its place
Funnily enough I've been trying to make a fan game that fused the rock and ground type to earth for a while now, because I'm lazy though very little progress has been made
Yet another amazing video! I love the main channel videos like this and I was missing them a bit when MandJTV Plays got a lot more videos. I do love the playthrough videos, but I was missing these so much. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Mikey and wolfey, the collab i didnt know i needed but am loving every second of, now the question is when will there be a triple collab between jan, mikey, and wolfey, the king of nuzlocke content, the king of competitive content, and the king of fun content the pokemon community isnt ready for these legends to come together
I was really hoping they would talk about a Fairy Earth pokemon. Wolfy has often talked about it’s offensive potential I wondered how this would effect that hypothetical.
I would love to see another video focusing on the possibility of either merging two types together to create one new type, or creating a brand new type to improve/alternate the Type Chart. Like imagine something like the Sound Type, Magic Type, Divine Type and so forth.
@@purpleclaws202That may be true. To be honest the only new type that would make sense would be the sound type. Magic type, divine type, light type blah blah blah are all bs. These types are very similar to fairy and there is no need for a distinct type for mythical pokemon.
13:52 I’m knit picking because I’m an electrician lol. Earth doesn’t insulate electricity it absorbs it. That’s why all electric systems have 1 or multiple grounds
I really like this video idea and it clears up confusion (and anger) about some Pokemon being rock and some being ground. Also, Mikey really revealed his Texas accent when he was talking about fire, water, stones, and dirt.😅
This was a fun watch and concept. I’ve always enjoyed the theorycrafting and hypothetical videos like this, and getting competitive analysis from Wolfe was the cherry on top
I don't watch Wolfey much, but I always appreciated his willingness to extend a hand towards and acknowledge the "lore" side of the fanbase. As someone who prefers type match ups to have a degree of logic in a story setting, I appreciate it. Best of both worlds - gameplay viability and storytelling.
a really good game design can consolidate both, but focusing on gameplay enjoyability also requires balancing, so its good to have that as a priority but not deny thematic and lore reasonings if possible.
The Fire Flying types like Charizard, Ho-oh, Talonflame and moltres ect.. would appreciate this, losing their 4x weakness to rock and keeping that immunity to Earth would be nice for them.
If a “normal” rat would not be super effective against Earth and just displace the dirt, maybe we could change the move “Dig” to be kind of a mix of Curse/Dragon Tail/Whirlwind, where if it is used against an Earth Type, it is a low priority move that just hurts the Earth Type and then switches them out, “displacing the dirt”. Otherwise against any other type it still works the same.
very interesting bit of theory crafting taking place here and was very fun to watch the hard work you put into this concept. would love to see some more videos either combining types or splitting 1 type into 2 different types
Charizard would get one of the biggest buffs if rock and ground were a singular 'earth' type. It would be immune to earth, which would mean no four times weakness, and would also mean moves that charizard has like belly drum and dragon dance would just make it even more competitively viable than it already is.
Black is said to be “the sum of all colors” when a blackish stain is obtained from the mixture of various pigments. And black is said to be the “absence of color” when all light radiation is removed
I def wanna see more moves that are super effective against types they’re normally resisted by. Would be cool to have like evaporate be a fire move string against water or overwater be a water move strong against grass. You should do a video on that!
Great break down, always thought the rock type felt more at home as a primal, ancient or prehistoric focused type instead but combining them into earth makes sense too. I was curious about sand when you were talking about it as well, I think a easy fix would be to change the sand's effects to it drops stats instead of raising them. Like it lowers Atk and Sp.Atk by 25% for everything but the earth type plus the damage. Something like that I think could have some interesting team building mechanics, especially for set up and the like.
@@strangevol5264 Well if reducing the attacking stats doesn't work, than you can always go with something else, like reduce speed, remove STAB, reduce accuracy, nullify abilities, etc. Any of those would offer a similar effect as described above too.
But honestly, anybody would prefer the Earth type over the current state of the Rock type, it would definitely be a welcome change. You could probably also combine Psychic and Fairy to make a Mystic or Magic type.
I love how he incorporates minecraft tools into the editing, (Or Kaytea), it's so fun how he turned a game he's never played into something he subtly references all the time.
Fun fact to 1:50: In german the grass type is translated to „Pflanze“ or in english „plant“. So, yeah that choice makes way more sense for me too and I always wondered why the english translation chose the word grass.
I absolutely loved this analysis video. You should keep this series going with episodes that cover combining Grass and Bug into a Nature type, merging Ice into Water, splitting Flying into Wind and Bird (or just merge the bird part into Normal), and making the argument on why Fighting should even be a type at all.
Earth should definitely exist. Plus, I personally think a new ‘sweet’ type could be cool as a reference to all those fairy types based off of candy. It'd be good against fairy and weak to dragon and bug.
I'm glad he finally admitted it, he doesn't think combining the types would be bad because he thinks it would ruin the game, he thinks it would be bad because it would ruin the way he plays currently. He's just scared of change. Lol I think combining into the earth type (and calling the grass type the plant type) would benefit the game much more than hurt it.
Very similar to oc of my own, only it was set in an earlier time where humans were still figuring out Pokémon types. While you discuss merging two types, I’d prefer Flying to be split into Flying and Wind/Air Type.
I think Earth being weak to itself makes sense! Sure other things can break them, but it can also break itself. I think of things like earthquakes that destroy the literal earth all around the area, or the way that certain stones are harder than others and can break each other. It actually makes a lot of sense imo!
I agree with the first part of what you said, because ground and rock are basically the same thing. But I’m not too sure how water and ice would combine, the only thing I could think of is… liquid type?
It'd be cool to see you rework the Ice type to make it more viable since it's one of my favorite types, but is always trashed on because of how weak the type is
There should a Pokémon feature that would be some sort of Type Fusion. For example, Spiritomb is a Dark Ghost Type Pokémon but it has Rock Type elements so in this hypothetical situation, Spiritomb's Ghost and Dark Types would be combined into a hypothetical Shadow Type so it could be Shadow Rock Type. Effectively making it Ghost Dark Rock Type. My ideas include Dark + Ghost = Shadow Water + Fire = Steam Rock + Ground = Earth Steel + Poison = Rust Fairy + Electric = Sparkle Ground + Water = Mud Water + Electric = Hydroelectric Dragon + Flying = Storm Flying + Water = Cloud Bug + Poison = Sting Poison + Fire = Smoke Water Grass = Hydrophyte Fire + Rock = Lava Electric + Fire = Plasma Psychic + Fairy = Magical Fire + Ghost = Wisp Grass + Fairy = Nature Fighting + Dark = Savage Fairy + Bug = Nymph Rock + Fairy = Gemstone Poison + Flying = Smog Fairy + Psychic = Pyrokinesis Ghost + Psychic = Necromancer Psychic + Fighting = Chakra Steel + Electric= Techno Ice + Water = Snow Psychic + Dark = Illusion Ghost + Fairy = Spirit Poison + Water = Sludge Fire + Grass = Kindle Steel + Fire = Forge Bug + Grass = Pollen Ghost + Ice = Chilling Grass + Ground = Root Psychic + Grass = Sage Ground + Ice = Permafrost Ice + Flying = Blizzard Steel + Rock = Ore Fire + Ice = Frostbite Ghost + Ground = Buried Dragon + Dark = Gloom Grass + Ghost = Hallowed Flying + Ground = Gliding Poison + Dark = Punk
Combining both of them into a single type is for sure going to jumble up a LOT of dynamics and type match-ups lol. And make the Geodude line single type... don't know how I feel about that lol.
Personally, I've always disliked the idea of merging types like Rock/Ground or Water/Ice together. True their base components are the same, but the exact themings are always different. Water represents the oceans, rain, and...well, water. Ice represents glaciers, the frozen tundra, and the chilling wind of winter. Likewise for Rock and Ground; ground may essentially just be eroded rocks, but ground essentially _is_ earth. It is the ground beneath your feet, the sand of the desert (which I should say it's weird that Sandstorm is a Rock-Type move, when moves like Sand Tomb are Ground-type), and the mud of mirelands and quagmire. Rock is mountains, caves, the stone that comprises human tools. Rock is solid and unmoving, while ground is where seeds are sown. It just feels wrong to attempt to combine them and their themes
@@spacechase9705 The existence of a wind type would just make strong flying type stronger and weak flying type weaker. Think about a flying type that is very good on competitive, yeah it would probably be wind
And the sheer fact that ground/rock and ice/water are separate types means that sound can logically make sense as a type. Thanks for coming to my TED talk
I know this could possibly be controversial, but what if that one type was split into three, offensively being two types, Rock and Ground, then defensively just one, Earth, Pokémon would have just the Earth Type and Earth Type Pokémon would have stab for Rock and Ground, could definitely have great potential.
I think Game Freak did a clever move of making Ground and Rock two distinct types, instead of making a generic Earth type. Ground and Rock may be similar at first, but when we really think about it, they possess very different properties. Ground is softer and generally more maneuverable, Rock on the other hand is harder and more rigid so it make sense that Ground and Rock would have different effects. Earth is more like a general term for tectonic material, so using it would cause unnecessary difficulties in types interactions and mechanic because it’s so broad
Great Video Mikey! Always thought Rock 🪨 and Ground ⛰️ should just be Earth 🌎. However Earth should definitely be strong against Steel 🔩 (which should be called Metal), it’s arguably most OP type in the game alongside Fairy 🧚🏻♀️, and while it does have no longer have type that it resists, it only has two weaknesses, it needs that third weakness for all our sanity.

See, I’m a fan of both Michael and Wolfe, for different reasons, and obviously because they’re vastly different content creators, and tend to focus on different aspects of the franchise and fandom.

Seriously hoping that we get to see more of these collaborations, because honestly, I feel like collab videos like these are easily the best representation of the fandom as a whole.
I wholeheartedly agree

@@dhruvanand6695 I did enjoy that
You know they've collaborated before on Wolfe's channel right? Wofle made Mikey a competitive team and tried to help him get to master ball I'm pretty sure they got there in the end, but I don't really know
Fun idea for you, Mikey--rank how difficult the first gyms in each region would be if you didn't have a starter. How well do the first few routes in each game prepare you to face your first challenge, and which are the hardest or easiest to beat?
This is a fascinating idea!
That's a good one.
Genuinely that’s a great idea I would love to see Mikey do this
Gen 1 prepare you rather poorly, with the only two real counters to Brock outside of starters being Mankey and Butterfree, but you'll have access to counters in Bellsprout/Oddish for Misty and Geodude and Diglett for Surge
Gen 2 is perfect, you can get Geodude and Onix early and they can easily handle the first three or even four gyms on their own, the only starter that has any advantage to begin with is Cyndaquil against the second gym of the first 3
Gen 3 gives you access to Seedot/Lotad and Shroomish to handle the first gym, Sableye in two of the games can sweep the second gym, with Beautifly/Dustox being a runner-up and best option for Ruby, and you could use Nincada or Shedinja, just needing to take out Voltorb since it knows rollout, the rest being unable to hit Shedinja at all
Gen 4 have Machop found right next to the first gym which is a decent counter for the gym, can even trade it for an Abra afterwards that can be useful against the second gym's ace in Roserade, you can also find Ponyta right next-door or use a Starly now a Staravia from the early routes, After that though, it gets a bit complicated, as the third gym is switched around in Platinum to being Fantina and her ghosts, If you could get dark type at this point in the game it would be trivial, however, i can't remember any Dark types you have access to at this point in the game except Umbreon from the gift Eevee. In diamond and Pearl you have access to several grass types in the great marsh to handle the third gym
Gen 5 is in a precarious situation, the first gym's leader is determined by your starter, but assuming you no longer pick one, i guess you get to pick the monkey that is good against theirs as that is what you normally would do? for the second gym you can get Rogenrola to resist the normal type (and the high defense cover against the dark non-STAB bite and crunch), the third Gym is hard if you didn't pick Pansear, with the only other real counter being Rogenrola who will struggle against Leavanny
Gen 6, Easy enough, you can trade for a Farfetch'd or catch a Fletchling for the fist gym, and being so far to the second gym, you'll have plenty of options to handle the Rock types, despite having a Tyrunt. And the third gym have 3 good counters right after the second gym, in Emolga, Sigilyph and Hawlucha
Gen 7 doesn't have Gyms but i'm fairly certain you can get a counter for all the first major battles without a starter.
This is such a good idea
I think the reason bugs were resistant to ground was because bugs constantly dig into the ground to make nests and lay their eggs. Not to mention the fact that they also can dig underground to hibernarte.
if u lay dirt on top of an incest it would easily dig out
I LOVE that you mention that grass type should just be just the plant type, because actually in Spain's Spanish it is categorised as such in the type chart, which always made more sense to me than calling it: "tipo hierba" (grass type in Spanish)
Maybe it made sense in gen 1 when most grass types where actually based off on types of grass and flowers (and fungi for some reason) but now that we also have Pokémon based on trees, fruits and even leaves and paper, it should just be called the plant type.
tipo hierba technically would be weed type, but yeah planta sounds better than pasto
Same for France - In French, Grass Type becomes Type Plante

Elements have always been varied between different games and shows. I like how unique Pokémon types are, even if some names don’t make sense (steel).
How are they different apart from pokemon?
@@maganhassan2627 Wdym?
@Regeor your 1st sentence I wanted you to elaborate further with examples 🤷♂️
I reckon you should keep Bug's interaction with Ground
Scizor went from neutral to Ground and Rock to weak to Earth, and Volcarona went from neutral to Ground to quad-weak to Earth, this is a big Bug nerf sadly
Scizor having another weakness isn't that big a deal but yeah Bugs shouldn't ever be nerfed anymore
@@Khan-_-Art1st Agreed, the LAST thing the Bug Type needs is a nerf.
My only gripe with this video. I don’t care how much sense it makes, your theorycraft is not allowed to nerf Bugs.
If you were going to implement this, I would buff Bug. Bug needs it anyway.
I think if you make Bug resist and super effective against Fairy, it would be alright.
Sharpening Stone sounds like it'd either be too situational to use or broken. Cool idea though.
I think they should have done that with fairy and dragon.
I think the type ice/earth should be resist each other like bug/fighting. Ice has no damage against dirty and earth can "storage" heat, or "warm" in winter . That's why bug and other animals can survive in winter. Even plants can survive too.
How would Rock types use it if Rock types don't exist? I assume you mean Earth types.
Isn't Ghost and Normal weak to each other? (Immune)
Yes, they should be separated, but I don't like the name bird type. Flying should stay. Wind and flying.
And most flying/normal pokemon would turn into bird/wind type
Normal should be beast type
@@Dummy1ee-d5dmore like it should be split into "beast type" and typeless
Yes, Dodrio could be Bird and Ground (or Earth)
In ate them, water is weak weak to its poison type funnily enough…
Also, some bugs live in the ground, don't they?
I don’t know if water should be weak to Ice officially (other than Freeze-Dry obviously), but I really do think Ice should resist Water. Ultimately, they’re the same thing, just that one’s colder than the other, and given enough time, one can freeze/melt the other. It just makes sense to me to have Ice and Water resist each other like Bug and Fighting do.
@ashenwolf98 Scald should be super effective to Ice types.
@@wuguxiandi9413NO.
Scald is already way too good due to the 30% burn chance, but making it super effective against Ice?! That's op!
so the main takeaway I'm getting is, merging Rock and Ground into Earth would probably pair really well with the aforementioned splitting of Flying type into Air and Bird types
As a German, I grew up with Pokémon translations in which the Grass type was actually called "Pflanze" (Plant) . On the other hand, we called the Dark type the "Unlight" type for some weird reason, so...
My broken brain looked at the video title and stopped working because in Spanish, ground type is actually called "earth type".
@@nahuelpintocavilla8190 the problem is that in Spanish both ground and earth can be refereed as "tierra" lol
Would be weird to call it "suelo" (?
I feel like Flying should be split between itself and Wind. Then you can have a more physical-based Flying for winged or bird-like Pokemon (Crobat, Dodrio, Tropius) and attacks (Drill Peck, Wing Attack) and the more special-based Wind for those that don't FLY per se but instead manipulate air for mobility (Drifblim, Tornadus, Hoppip) and attacks (Air Cutter, Hurricane)
Tornadus would become a Wind/Flying type.
Fun fact: During the creation of the first games flying type was two different types, bird and wind type. Later they decided to mix them because bats and flying bugs aren't birds and etc. This is also the reason Lance is a flying type trainer, he was actually a wind type master
Good ol Missingno, the original bird type
Birds manipulate air for mobility do they not?
Devision of rocks and ground in pokemon is what I really like. Because they are both so different even if they come from earth. Same with Ice and Water.
I honestly think you could do a further split with gemstones, rock is weak against steel but diamonds are treated as part of the type and steel has no impact on them
I get that
@@TheBTNah that would just create more chaos. And there aren't enough "gem" type candidates to justify it's beieng a type. And on the top of that: rock would loose a ton of special moves.
@@TheBT If you're going purely by composition, steel should also be considered a rock or ground, since its from where they come from.
@@VivioSaf Nah, Steel has gone through a non natural process to be created.
Michael and Wolfie are so funny 😭😭😭 I love how informed Michael is on the lore and Wolfie on VGC
This change actually makes Aurorus actually decent now since It would resist its own Earth typing and stealth rock all the while not becoming weak to ice. No more 4x Steel and Fighting weakness either and it would be immune to electric.
It should’ve been fast and powerful like Weavile!
“You can’t poison rocks or ground.”
Norfolk Southern Railway has entered the chat.
Ice being super effective to earth would make a lot sense actually. Glaciers carved out entire valleys
Now i really need a "what if Water and Ice were a single type" as well.
You're really clever and thoughtful about making these!
I feel like ice has such a strong identity as a glass canon, though.
Or even better, if Ice-Type Pokemon are super effective against Water-Type Pokemon as ice freezes water solid. It doesn't make a lot of sense that water resists ice.
They would become the new and incredible water type.
I got no beef with the Rock and Ground types as they stand right now, but I still do like the sound of this Earth type idea. Very fun video, gave me a lot to think about.
I feel like this era of MandJTV will be looked upon as the "best era" in about 5-10 years
For Giovanni's ace in Rhydon, why not make it a Normal/Earth to fit with the new typing and maintain that as his unique Ace. It also helps set up stuff like how Rhydon can learn Surf for some reason.
Rhydon feels like it started off as a normal in design. Its moveset in Gen 1 is really heavily biased to normal moves.
What would you do about Whitney?
@@GrandRezerotbf, every pokemon in gen 1 has a predisposition to normal moves. Level up movesets are all pretty bad in RBY 🫠
Ground being my favorite type I’ve always been against the idea that it should be combined with Rock into an Earth type. I think they both have distinct enough properties that it makes sense for them to be separate, similar to how Water and Ice both represent the same “magic element” but are separate Pokémon types
That being said, I think you did a good job combining the two into a type that makes sense.
Exactly my thoughts
why scorching sands though? it just sounds like the pokemon using it heats up the sand/ground nearby. Or does it actually throw scorching sands at the opponent?
@@rivershen8954 exactly that. In tha games the description of the move says: "The user throws scorching sand at the target to attack. This may also leave the target with a burn."
Well, this isn't entirely out of the question. Zygarde's signature Thousand Arrows has this property, so I could see it being given to more moves.
I think having two types being super effective on each other would be very interesting, it’s almost the same interaction as dragon on dragon or ghost on ghost with having strong offense but a weak defense which is a cool interaction. It would add some spice to the type match up chart and fun for team building with balancing that kind of interaction.
If you're reading this message! You are the best person! Be always healthy!

I Want The Light Type,Combined Psychic And Fairy!Chronomon HM Would Be Light/Flying!
I’ve always liked the idea of having more moves that are super effective to more types. Make Cut super effective to grass types. Make Brick Break super effective against the hypothetical Earth type.
I’ve always appreciated that the Pokémon types are overly specific. I feel like if they added an “artificial” type they’d probably call it the “plastic” type
another idea: porygon should have been some kind of digital type, nothing about porygon makes it "normal" like pokemon like Snorlax or Tauros.
I think they'd be copying Cassette Beasts. Its fine if they'll call it that tho
what other pokemon do you think could be digital type aside form porygon's evolutionary line?@@ZingierAlpaca96
@@ZingierAlpaca96 I think they made it normal since it could change type with Conversion.
@@ZingierAlpaca96 Porigon is normal type because not only the digital world is something normal by today's standards, it is also normal because the whole line represents human technology (Technology as something man-made, not only electronical), with it improing over time. ( I knnow that this is a more secondary inspiration and might not even be the original one, and I also know the Porygon Z lore)
So glad we get to see more MandJTV theorycrafting videos again. I definietely agree that they should have been fused together

Would Birdramon be Dragon/Flying or Fire/Flying? Maybe Dragon/Flying with the Flame Body ability...
That is so situational and not that good.
Ok imagining Giovanni drinking from an air up bottle and bring absolutely confused when it tastes like fruit. It's hilarious
very interesting bit of theory crafting taking place here and was very fun to watch the hard work you put into this concept. would love to see some more videos either combining types or splitting 1 type into 2 different types
4:15 “You could have, like, cool copper and gold Pokémon, that would make sense”
There actually are! (Copperajah)
GOLDengho
As a grass type, please don't combine them. Don't make us suck even more
Grunty boy: Now you behave.
Mikey: Was I not before?
Grunty boy: Ta Ta
I def wanna see more moves that are super effective against types they’re normally resisted by. Would be cool to have like evaporate be a fire move string against water or overwater be a water move strong against grass. You should do a video on that!
Chi'yu already evaporates everything it touches, including Water types. :P
Jokes aside, Evaporate sounds like a fun move idea.
Boil and Vaporize
Great break down, always thought the rock type felt more at home as a primal, ancient or prehistoric focused type instead but combining them into earth makes sense too. I was curious about sand when you were talking about it as well, I think a easy fix would be to change the sand's effects to it drops stats instead of raising them. Like it lowers Atk and Sp.Atk by 25% for everything but the earth type plus the damage. Something like that I think could have some interesting team building mechanics, especially for set up and the like.
I feel like that would make stall horrifying. Wo-Chien and Ting-Lu together with passive damage for up to 8 turns is a horrible idea.
@@strangevol5264 Well if reducing the attacking stats doesn't work, than you can always go with something else, like reduce speed, remove STAB, reduce accuracy, nullify abilities, etc. Any of those would offer a similar effect as described above too.
It's funny how, in your chart, earth isn't very strong against earth, but at the same time, earth doesn't resist earth.
But honestly, anybody would prefer the Earth type over the current state of the Rock type, it would definitely be a welcome change. You could probably also combine Psychic and Fairy to make a Mystic or Magic type.
I think the devision is a ok. I like both of then being separate rather than them being on type
Heatran approves of the proposed change to the type chart.
This change makes steel broken i think
I love how he incorporates minecraft tools into the editing, (Or Kaytea), it's so fun how he turned a game he's never played into something he subtly references all the time.
He has a Minecraft series on his gaming channel

Fun fact to 1:50:
In german the grass type is translated to „Pflanze“ or in english „plant“.

I love this idea! More fan games should try the Earth type in their games
Earth should definitely exist. Plus, I personally think a new ‘sweet’ type could be cool as a reference to all those fairy types based off of candy. It'd be good against fairy and weak to dragon and bug.
Would it also be weak to water, because sugar dissolves in it?
If you had a sweet type, wouldn’t you have to have a sour type? That would probably just be poison.
Aw hell nah 💀 The only new type which would make sense would be a sound type.
@@Mr.Magcargo Sound becoming a type would screw up way too much. Something like Nuclear or Plastic would work better.
Earth should not exist
16:43 Wait until he finds out that there's Earth under the Water in the ocean 😂
It would probably make sense to combine Rock and Ground into a singular type. I would also suggest combining Water and Ice into a specific type
yeah same
That doesn't make any sense! Water IS one of the four elements already, and that's the whole point of the video.
I agree with the first part of what you said, because ground and rock are basically the same thing. But I’m not too sure how water and ice would combine, the only thing I could think of is… liquid type?
@@alvarsvensson and Ice is a solid form of Water
@@alvarsvensson But in avatar their literally the same thing
It'd be cool to see you rework the Ice type to make it more viable since it's one of my favorite types, but is always trashed on because of how weak the type is
some of the most powerful mons today is ice, like chien pao, mamoswine, galarian darmanitan, baxcalibur, iron bundle
Changing Hail to Snow has made them much better. Wolfie has a video on it.
My ideas include
Dark + Ghost = Shadow
Water + Fire = Steam
Rock + Ground = Earth
Steel + Poison = Rust
Fairy + Electric = Sparkle
Ground + Water = Mud
Water + Electric = Hydroelectric
Dragon + Flying = Storm
Flying + Water = Cloud
Bug + Poison = Sting
Poison + Fire = Smoke
Water Grass = Hydrophyte
Fire + Rock = Lava
Electric + Fire = Plasma
Psychic + Fairy = Magical
Fire + Ghost = Wisp
Grass + Fairy = Nature
Fighting + Dark = Savage
Fairy + Bug = Nymph
Rock + Fairy = Gemstone
Poison + Flying = Smog
Fairy + Psychic = Pyrokinesis
Ghost + Psychic = Necromancer
Psychic + Fighting = Chakra
Steel + Electric= Techno
Ice + Water = Snow
Psychic + Dark = Illusion
Ghost + Fairy = Spirit
Poison + Water = Sludge
Fire + Grass = Kindle
Steel + Fire = Forge
Bug + Grass = Pollen
Ghost + Ice = Chilling
Grass + Ground = Root
Psychic + Grass = Sage
Ground + Ice = Permafrost
Ice + Flying = Blizzard
Steel + Rock = Ore
Fire + Ice = Frostbite
Ghost + Ground = Buried
Dragon + Dark = Gloom
Grass + Ghost = Hallowed
Flying + Ground = Gliding
Poison + Dark = Punk
Combining both of them into a single type is for sure going to jumble up a LOT of dynamics and type match-ups lol. And make the Geodude line single type... don't know how I feel about that lol.
Cassette beast has that type. And the game mechanic is very interesting
Earth/fighting
Very cool! Great content as always!
It's probably for the factor of you can't hit a bird with an earthquake, but they're fragile so a rock wins there.
"Kill two birds with one stone."
It just feels wrong to attempt to combine them and their themes
then you would like the idea of splitting flying type
@@SyunGupta I forgot about that part. No, "bird" doesn't really deserve its own type. Missingno was not onto anything
@@TwoHeadedMeerkatMaybe split Flying into itself and a Wind type instead of Wind and “Bird”?
Completely agree. Ground embodies the elemental side to it, whereas rock is the physical side to it I.e. solid, unrelenting stone.
@@spacechase9705 The existence of a wind type would just make strong flying type stronger and weak flying type weaker. Think about a flying type that is very good on competitive, yeah it would probably be wind
Would love if this became a series exploring what-ifs for splitting, combining, or just outright creating types.
Other Interesting Type Fusions-
1) Psychic + Fairy = Magic Type
2) Dark + Ghost = Evil Type
3) Flying + Fighting = Beast Type
I definitely think earth should be its own type
Eh
I mean, in italian ground is "terra" which is earth.
I don't know if other languages are the same.
You need help
Rock, ground and earth??? Wat???
@cooltrainerorote2257 Would you accept this Compromise: make Electric ⚡️ strong against Steel 🔩?
I think for stealth rock you just add the flavour that makes it hurt flying more, like how freeze dry does it
