Those trails are actually where they scan the terrain under the water. Those trails are the places that have actually been mapped by satellites and Google earth. Everything else is just rendered in cause it's just water. Which is why a lot of islands are blacked out or not even on Google maps at all
There are no blacked out islands, every place on Earth in on Google Maps, just some is at significantly lower resolution than others. Same goes for the seafloor as far as I am aware, the trails are just where higher resolution data is available.
The lines in the oceans are actually just the only spots where we have the bottom of the ocean mapped. Every one of those lines is the path a boat took to map the depth and whatnot

We have mapped the ground down to 30cm pixel, but the oceans are like 3 km of resolution. We don't actually know how deep it is there. Isn't that crazy? Like We've mapped Mars at like somewhere in the 50-100 cm range but our oceans haven't. They're working on it tho
Those ocean "markers" aren't markers at all. That is the ocean's topography because the bottom of the ocean isn't flat. Honestly Google Earth looks pretty impressive better than Space Engine in my opinion.
