I love your spirit! Your family is wonderful and the fact that you all work together is inspiring! I live in north central Washington State in a small town. We live in the county but only a few minutes from town, very rural. We've raised chicken and had a garden.
My daughter moved to a big city and bought a house in town. I promised to move to wherever she moved. (I thought she was going to get a place outside of town.) I'm sad because i don't want to live in the city but i love my grandchildren and children too much and will not break my promise. I love your vlogs and will continue to live vicariously through you! I am going to get them all gardening and, who knows, they could have chickens in their future! Love you and always wish you the best! God bless!❤

I so look forward to your videos. I check every day. They are encouraging me as we (my daughter and spouse and two little boys and me) clean up our property as well. I closed on 18 acres the same day you closed on your property. Yours was recorded before mine. The clean up has been similar. Can't believe people live like this! We had 5 sleeping cabins to clean out , a kitchen building, and a fifth wheel. 14 buildings in all. Carpets have been ripped out of all the cabins and fifth wheel, and absolutely filthy furniture, and gross mattresses and bedding. The previous owners were substance growers and had two mastiffs that had been kept in all the buildings and one nice shed we will use as a chicken house. All the couches were actually black and greasy from the dogs. The smell was unbelievable. There was resin and wires to dry their product strung in many of the buildings and a thriving (and probably high) mouse population in all buildings. I am still living on my ranch (minimum of 6 hours away-usually longer pulling the trailer). I have brought all the mattresses, furniture and garbage back and burned it. Then I haul the springs and leftover metal to the metal recycle. We have bleached all the buildings and painted them. Then we had the ceilings insulated and tongue and groove pine put on the ceilings. My daughter laid vinyl plank flooring in all the cabins. It looks so good! Did the ceilings in the kitchen building and bathhouse also. My daughter and family are living there this winter with no heat (we are solar so far). Thank goodness for the fire ring. They have a fire every day unless it is pouring rain. They are basically living outside and the 4 and 7 year old love it. I come and go. We've added a couple of solar panels to the existing array and a generator to run the lights, washer and fridge. Sun is only on the panels a few hours each day on these shortest days. This was built as a summer camp. This last trip I got two dogs relocated and a pen built. We have it set up for them to sleep in an old cabover camper (that was filled with garbage that had to be disposed of). We moved over Christmas break about 25 large olive trees (dug from my ranch by my daughter who really good with a backhoe). The clay on the root balls had to be hacked and washed off. An awful job. They are now all planted ten feet back from the fence on the new property. Looks wonderful. Also planted English Laurel along the actual fence and amaryllis belladonna between the road and the fence. Slowly but surely. Again your videos are so encouraging. I plan on spending more time there this summer if I can get more of the animals moved. It is so hot here where I live in California and so much cooler at the new place.

I miss my chickens, but I sure don't miss shovelling out to their house every day (sometimes twice) all winter! Their house seems a lot further away once the snow starts to add up! I'll see if I can design a better system involving the garage, which is only 3 covered steps from my door. Then I can get chicks this spring - yay!

Happy for you guys ! Lovin the pigs ! A tip for others out there, I thought of when you gave us your reassurances on your fence/water stuff. When fencing across a stream, for permanent fence but maybe a way to rig up between 2 stakes, to go with the electric systems, is to use plastic barrels suspended on their sides, to float up & down with the water level, blocking livestock from going under the bottom wire of a fence spanning the stream ( crick ;) . I ADORED this idea, when I saw it in the ( innovation & DIY applauding, ) publication "Farm show" .

We just pulled a tick off of a cat - in January in Wisconsin!!! It is going to be a bad year for ticks! You should get a flock of guinnea hens! They just free range around your property and roost up in the trees at night. They do an amazing job keeping the ticks under control AND they will alert you when a predator is nearby!! (We have no ticks on our property - the cat who came home with a tick likes to go hunt in the woods across the road where the guinnea hens dont visit!) Love to watch you guys work your land!!

I don't have pigs, but I just have chickens for eggs and to not spend money on plant fertilizer for my hydroponics, i dug a small pond in my back yard and have bluegills in it that I stocked from the local lake to poop and make natural fertilizer for me in the pond, the chickens use it for their water and don't touch the fish and minnows I stocked it. I just dug a hole in the ground the size of a hot tub, then ran a plastic liner across the hole to hold water and then installed an irrigation line to it that comes on when the irrigation comes on with the well pump, that pumps water into the pond based on a set amount of time that offsets the amount of water loss that occurs during the week. to combine it with my yard, i have a solar powered fountain pump that pumps it to the hide side of the pond i made and trickles down some rocks i setup.

For your red clay dirt stains> Fels-Naptha is an American brand of laundry soap used for pre-treating clothing stains and as a home remedy for poison ivy and other skin irritants. The soap was originally created around 1893 by Fels and Company and was the first soap to include naphtha.

Due to warmer weather, we now have more ticks in VT. If you keep the areas you frequent mowed, that'll keep them back. I found when I was clearing and burning brush, the low-lying smoke from my fires also deterred them, as well as mosquitos so I'll often keep a smudge fire going all day.

Love the little fat piglets and the chickens. They need a video with just them oinking and squaoking are moving around. Love happy fat animals. The chickens look like pillows with legs.❤❤❤ You guys will have a great year this year, you two seem to be thriving and the kids as well( we dont seem them that much but its understandable since they oryou might not feel like putting them too much in front). I am sure by the end of 2020 you will be in the house and enjoying it, Meg will have her workshop in the old house and in the future many more cute animals. Cannot wait to see you garden this year

To get that out of your jeans and most stains it is a 2 part solution. First por peroxide on the stain and let it sit about 15 minutes than rinse it out using cold water. Next rub in baking soda ( make a thick paste ) and pour on distilled white vinegar and let it bubble. Rinse with cold water. You may have to repeat one more time.

Some on at least one I'net backbone are at reduced bandwidth again; a reason for buffering & whatnot. Second time this week for me. I took a page out of your book Meg; couch craft. I could not get even a nano-second of enthusiasm for either my knitting needles or crochet hooks. Kumihimo. The simplest 4 strand braid, same soothing repetitive motion as either knit or crochet. *However*; now that I've taught myself, I keep looking around the stash piles for variations... Thanks Meg!

You get just as much precipitation as we do!! But for four months, ours falls as snow. You are going to be able to grow a lot of food there.
Last time I was on the west coast, I had to endure three months of sunny days. Almost drove me nuts!

Man it looks nice by you folks. It's zero degrees Fahrenheit here In Wisconsin at the moment, and we are expecting a minimum of six inches of snow tomorrow! You have made good progress on clearing out that jungle you started with! It may take a few years, but you are definitely on your way!

To get red clay out - orange Ajax for every kind of spot. Scrub the area when you take your pants off with it. It works. I have lived in Georgia with the red clay and have used it all my life.

Meg, add vinegar, baking soda and dawn to your washer... run the load for a minute.. stop washer, let sit for a few.. and then continue your wash.. That should take care of the staining...

I have found that beneficial nematodes help with flea and tick problems. Get some guinea hens and let them have a run of the property , they will eat the ticks too . Bat houses around the homestead would help with mosquitos too.

I live in Virginia, and I have red clay everything as well. I have no issues getting it out of my clothes using a smaller load of laundry, on the longest wash cycle, and liquid Gain detergent. Sometimes I add Oyxclean, and if its really caked in there, and stained, I have used peroxide to pre-treat (treat it kind of like a dried blood stain) I do not use fabric softener in the wash cycle either. It works really well on everything except white t-shirts for some reason.
