    Thank you for being the support I need right now. I went into dka twice, when I was diagnosed and then again about a week ago. I’m only 18 and it’s very scary and painful and it’s all because I didn’t want to accept my diabetes and take care of myself. It caused a kidney infection that got to my blood, thankfully I had plenty of wonderful doctors and nurses take care of me. I’m trying to get back on track and live my life while taking care of myself because after seeing my mom cry because of how much pain I was in made me feel so selfish. It’s hard to explain to people who don’t have diabetes how frustrating it can be to stay on top of everything but in the end it’s always going to be there and the only thing I can do is take control of it.

      @@KarolinaSays When I was diagnosed with T1 I had full blown DKA and got rushed to the hospital. You are right, it is absolutely horrible, hits you like a freight train, and wreaks havoc on your body. BG level was ~360, which is not THAT high compared to other diagnosis stories, but the ketone body levels went through the roof. It took doctors almost a week to flush them all out, and even large dosages of IV (!!) insulin barely worked until they were gone. Easily one of the worst weeks of my life.

    Thank you for sharing this. It is so important. My adult son had DKA.......that's how we found out he had type 1 diabetes. Started out thinking he had bronchitis because he was run down and coughing. Took him to a quick care thinking we'd head home with antibiotics.......so wrong, ended up in the hospital where his heart stopped 3 times. A total miracle that he survived and is still with us. In hindsight I remember things that should have been red flags, but didn't notice it at the time. He would drink tons of water, and sometimes his breath smell like nail polish remover. Otherwise he looked fine, so didn't concern me. I'm so glad you called for an ambulance and got taken care of. Thanks again for sharing your story, it could seriously save someone. Have a great day! :)

    So glad you were able to get this taken care of. The severe dehydration is what is so dangerous with DKA.
    I had a similar situation. I had started on a new type of pump. I won't give the brand name, but it was a tubeless system. I noticed my sugar rising and it was not corrected with bolus. I changed the infusion set. I bolused again and waited. BS continued to rise. I got to the point where I was above 500. I then injected myself to get it back down. I was experiencing many of the same symptoms that you described. When I took the new set off and found there was an insertion issue. This pump system had an unusual insertion method.
    Once I got my bs going in the right direction, I called the tech support. I had 2 infusion sets fail. There solution was to mail me 2 new sets. After several more calls to the company the next day, and receiving lousy customer service. I boxed everything thing up and shipped their system back to them.

      @@KarolinaSays this was probably about 12 years ago. The company is still around, so hopefully they have gotten their issues worked out. I still had my old pump at that time, so was able to use that. I had quite a time getting a refund sent to the insurance company. Initially they denied the refund. After giving some very negative feedback about this company, on a diabetes blog, the nurse practitioner who ran the blog contacted someone high up in the company. The next day I received a phone call that I was being refunded.
      I ended up getting a new pump from the company I had originally been with.

I had no idea it was dka just thought I had a bug, I couldn't stand, I drank littres and puked litres with brown bile in it .... nothing quenched my thirst, once in a coma I puked all over myself and the bed and was talking nonsense, my wife at this point called an ambulance, I have no recollection of anyone coming or and ambulance I woke up next day in hospital with 6 doctors around me saying they got me back, I suffered heart enlargement and was sent for a stent for possible heart attack, I also had kidney problems, I'm now on insulin tresiba and novo rapid and doing ok, hope this helps anyone in some way love from the uk. When I ended up in Intensive Care I went because I passed out from not breathin. I walked into the emergency waiting room and as soon as I spoke to a nurse I was immediately taken for xrays. They said I was green and the guy said definitely DKA. After trying to sit up for x Ray's I was throwing up everywhere, couldn't see, everything was flashing through time I couldnt make sense of a lot of things. Next thing you know I'm being told I might need to be put into medical induced coma, I just nodded hoping that I wouldn't have to feel that pain anymore. Last thing I remember was being played back and had a mask put over my face that knocked me out the minute it touched my face. My breathing was way to rapid none of the oxygen was getting into my lungs because they where 50% full on the bottom left lung and top right was filled with the pneumonia bacteria. After that I was a week of a breathing tube feeding tube and constant checks on my fever that reached 105°f. I had a few instances of waking up after the tube was removed for whatever it was they kept sticking down my throat to make me throw up. Horrible stuff.... I'm scared of ever going back to that. I dont remember 95% of it but the parts i did really freaked me out. It's hard to think about it.... I get scared everytime I think about ever going into that place.

    You definitely want to limit the amount you drink when you’re feeling like you don’t have enough. May be a leader or so at a time. Because if you drink too much it could affect other things. But good story, I’ve had that happen to me on occasion with my blood sugar being in the 700s, and then dropping low because of insulin. Although I never know what my sugar is until I test it because I don’t seem to be sensitive to wet my sugar levels are. I know it’s weird but I can’t feel highs or lows.

  • @dvdv7777
    @dvdv7777 5 лет назад +1

    You got good advice here. The severity of DKA is often still underestimated.
    Gotta correct you on ketosis vs. ketoacidosis though. They are actually closely related. Ketosis is a controlled (!) burning of fat for purposes of fueling the cells. Well, not fat directly. The liver converts fatty acids to ketone bodies first, since fatty acids can't pass cell membranes freely, while ketone bodies can. Most cells can use ketone bodies as fuel (not all - red blood cells can't, some areas in the brain can't, and a few others). What little glucose is still needed is provided both by the few carbs you still eat in keto and by gluconeogenesis (metabolism of fat, and to some degree, protein, to glucose).
    The rate of ketosis and gluconeogenesis is driven by the insulin level in your blood. During ketosis, you still have some insulin, so the ketogenesis and gluconeogenesis are in check, and everything is okay. During keto_acidosis_, there's no insulin, so these two processes are completely uncontrolled and go into overdrive. Uncontrolled ketogenesis produces tons of ketone bodies (which acidifies the blood, hence the "acidosis" in DKA), uncontrolled gluconeogenesis raises the blood sugar levels, and of course any carbs you eat will not make it into cells due to lack of insulin, so your blood sugar increases even more. Also, both processes catabolize fat and protein rapidly since they are totally unconstrained due to absence of insulin, which is why you lose weight quickly during DKA (and why you lose both fat and muscle). It can also lead to protein in the urine due to the large degree of protein catabolization going on. Fortunately, this type of proteinuria usually goes away quickly after treating DKA, so it is no sign of kidney damage.
    So, essentially, ketoacidosis is out-of-control ketosis.
    Also important to note is that high blood sugars are a byproduct of DKA, they are not the cause. There's even euglycemic DKA (DKA with normal blood sugar levels), which can happen for example in people who take SGLT-2 inhibitors.

    • @DarkoFitCoach

      yes but acidosis does almost never happen in healthy people, literally almost impossible to pump up the ketones to such a level. now diabetics especially type 1 have an issue with insulin so its possible

    • @dvdv7777
      @dvdv7777 5 лет назад

      @@DarkoFitCoach Yep. The important bit is the total absence of insulin, which very rarely happens otherwise. In non-diabetics, it most likely happens due to intense alcoholism, though alcoholic ketoacidosis has different symptoms.
