  • Recognizing, testing for, and effectively treating ketones and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) are basic survival skills for everyone living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). JDRF shares the signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis and how to prevent it.
    What is DKA?
Diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA, happens when your body doesn’t have enough insulin to break down glucose for energy. As a result, your body turns to break down fat instead, which produces ketones. Ketones in turn make your blood more acidic, and the more ketones that build up in your body, the more dangerous the condition can become to the point of it being life-threatening.
Although knowing diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms is important for people with all diabetes types, DKA mostly affects people with type 1 diabetes.
Some of the most common risk factors for developing DKA as a type 1 diabetic include:
    ● Being undiagnosed or newly diagnosed and not receiving enough insulin
    ● Having a viral or bacterial illness
    ● Taking certain medications
    ● Undergoing severe trauma or stress
Some of the most common symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis include:
    ● Frequent urination
    ● Extreme thirst
    ● High blood sugar
    ● Ketones in urine
    ● Nausea and vomiting
    ● Abdominal pain
    ● Confusion
    ● Fruity smelling breath
    ● Fatigue

Testing for ketones is incredibly important due to the dangerous nature of diabetic ketoacidosis. Although detecting ketones in urine during pregnancy is normal, in most cases elevated ketone levels are a cause for concern.
Learn more about what ketone levels mean at www.jdrf.org/blog/2023/04/13/....
If you’ve recently experienced high blood sugar levels or are prediabetic and experience any symptoms associated with diabetic ketoacidosis, it’s vital that you test for and treat the increase in ketones immediately.
Learn more about high blood sugar, its symptoms, and causes at: www.jdrf.org/t1d-resources/ab...
Luckily, there are many ways you can check for ketones, including:
    ● Blood ketone meters
    ● Urine strips
    ● Monitoring your blood glucose levels and checking for DKA symptoms
If you’re interested in using a blood glucose monitor to keep track of your blood sugar levels and overall health, visit: www.jdrf.org/t1d-resources/da...
Very few people outside of those diagnosed with type 1 diabetes know what DKA is and how it is recognized in T1D patients. If left untreated, DKA can result in a loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.
Whether you are a person with T1D, know someone with diabetes, or simply want to educate yourself on the symptoms, causes, and effects of DKA, learning more about the condition is crucial. By educating yourself on the effects of DKA, you can potentially save the life of someone who has DKA and doesn’t know it.
On the frontier of building lasting type 1 diabetes awareness, JDRF looks to educate more people on the signs and dangers of DKA and how they can help someone experiencing those symptoms get help.
To learn more about our work in type 1 diabetes research and awareness building, visit www.jdrf.org/ today.

I’ve been going through these symptoms for years my ketones are always high in my urine and it seems none of my food digest my body is in a forced fasting mode, and I had to be admitted to the hospital they told me that I had autoimmune pancreatitis, found that my glucose was up and down and they was checking to see if I have and diabetic symptoms, all I was given was protonix to keep taking, one time it took Marijauna and acid was coming right out of my tongue I had diarrhea and lose stool I still can see that food is not all the way digested in stool , I go to a rheumatologist recently to get more blood test done my ANA screen by ifa, test under immunology & protein studies is positive and says abnormal so now I’m waiting for a follow up, it’s been it’s a scary journey for me but I’m holding on and staying strong, I will push for more test to test for type 1, because my calcium was also high in my blood I would feel and cracking all over and my body aches and then I move bowel so I know it’s something going on, I’ve been praying 🙏

You look amazing by the way. I wanted to say that I’ve exercise my entire life and try to eat healthy but my dad is a diabetic and I just got my urine test that came out with traces of this.
Now I don’t know what to do .I been thinking about switching to a plant based diet.

I know this is an old vid, but can symptoms of DKA be spurred on after an extended period (2 months) of not eating carbs/sugar but then reintroducing it? And I know asking the youtube community isn't the best solution, but the wait list for getting an appointment with a doctor is ridiculous where I live and they often aren't thorough so here I am doing my own research while I wait. I have no idea if I'm diabetic and have been doing keto for 2ish months, but had some really strange flu-like symptoms after consuming a bit of sugar accidentally.

Hey, I‘ve had a similar situation to yours.
I didn’t eat anything for 2 months and drank only coffee with sweetened milk. It does contain sugar but idk how much it affects the insulin levels.
The only thing was that I didn’t eat anything besides it.
So after 2months I felt getting really bad cravings, all around chocolate and bread.
So one day I decided to eat a bunch of nuts and toast with chocolate spread. The next day I felt very nervous and anxious with no reason behind it.
The next day I didn’t really eat anything because I was pretty full so I remember me being really dizzy and confused when people talked to me, like it was so serious I would go to the toilet and just sit down and sleep??
Another thing that I noticed is that i wanted to drink hot chocolate, when I did, my stomach felt pretty bad and I suddenly started vomiting the liquid out.
I don’t know what exactly was happening with me but when I went to the toilet my urine was yellow and had a strange foam around it. I looked it up and it meant that I peed protein urine?
The next days I was ravenously hungry and couldn’t stop eating.
So I had diarrhoea and was vomiting at the same time?
I felt fatigued and my muscles were cramping, I couldn’t get out of the bed because of it.
And I remember when I started eating much more than before, I started to get thinner than before.
My vision is blurry too and I remember being confused and couldn’t even comprehend what people said or what I was trying to say. I felt like my mind was shutting down and just my body was moving.
These are my symptoms and I’m wondering if i have some sort of disease?😭 because I literally don’t feel like I’m alright.
Went to the doctors and my blood pressure is normal, I only had an vitamin d deficiency and they said that it’s just a mental thing.

Hi. I'm desperately trying to learn / figure out how or why BG goes down and ketones go up or vice versa. What do you do if you increase insulin and BG & Ketones actually both go up? Is that the Somogy effect? I can not seem to drop my little one's BG! I know you're talking about humans but I still want to learn because there are many things that are identical to pets. Or it gives me another starting point to look deeper into.

Thanks for this! Another symptom that comes after extended DKA is severe muscle cramps at least with my pre DX it was. Probably severe dehydration due to DKA though. I lost 35 lbs over a 3 week period, while eating and drinking everything in sight, but during the last week my calf and thigh muscles cramped so badly during the night I couldn't walk in the morning. Had to drag myself into a warm bath before I could stand and get dressed for work. DKA is awful :(

DKA, Diabetic Ketoacidosis is caused by high blood sugars over an extended period of time. Weeks, month or two. Your kidneys filter the bad things out of your blood. In this case your kidneys try to filter out the excess sugar if your blood sugars are too high. But the kidneys cannot filter all the sugar out. Overtime this high sugar remaining in your blood causes proteins and acids to build up in the blood. This poisons you. And can kill you. Symptoms are excessive drinking of water to help the kidneys get rid of the excess sugar it is filtering out. And your breath smells like bananas.
