Any news on the rat warlord and badgers? Also, oath looks good and I want to know more about viod lich. Viod lich is supposed to be their new game coming to kickstarter.
The Deck, I like it because it very impressive how every card works for every faction even though they all play different. Some card are very important and also not that good for every faction, the important part is that every card can be played by everyone (as long they meet the requirements). We cant forget about those Ambush Cards! Makes the game even more interesting.
Reason #4: Anyone Can Win I've gotten my dad to play twice. Despite expressing frustration throughout that he didn't know how to play, or that he was doing poorly or his faction was underpowered, he won both games. The first with a domination card.
At the moment that all the "life"(cards) go the lost soul pile due to a dynasty turmoil, I find this game to be alive. The story that Root tells is truly amazing.
Hey Sam, incredible video. I remember I was watching videos some years ago and suddenly one of your Root strategy videos popped up on my recommendations, the artwork immediately caught my attention and I had to check it out. And here I am, with Root in my top 3 fav games. I love the base game, I got the first expansion but due to all these 2020 events I havent had the oportunity to try any of the new factions yet. Keep it up with the good work man, I enjoyed the video a lot!
You're absolutely right about the narrative that this game creates when you play, the result of this is that it also leaves lasting memories. I will never forget the moment in my very first game when the Crows hired a force of Otters and sailed them down the river to destroy my Cat fortress! (This made my eventual victory all the sweeter) Games that can do this are rare indeed, many of them are are very difficult to get to the table, for Root to be as accessible and brief compared to so many of the others is remarkable.
I'd love to see a look at Vast from you, most people who did faction videos for it pretty much just read the rules without any of the talk of underlying strategy. I finally got my hands on Crystal Caverns, as I decided to get it aparently right after it went out of print and had to use Boardgame Geek, and I'm really enjoying it, even if I've only played a few times so far, and have so much to dig into with the main game factions, and the there's the pretty much 5 more in The Fearsome Foes, then the Mysterious Mansion and it's rules for crossing the two games over and THEN the Haunted Hallways. There's a lot to explore.
@@LordoftheBoard Sweet to hear! I just picked up The Fearsome Foes due to being out of print currently, figured better to secure it now then have to look and look like I did for Crystal Caverns, and I've got a few Amazon cards I can use for Mysterious Manor! I am all in on ROOT except the mats and it is my favorite board game as well. Thank for articulating and presenting it so very well! The very different factions, theme, art, and replay-ability are the best and what I look for in a game. Leder is also a great company with great customer support. I got stickers from them for the very minor errata yesterday. Just watched their update on Twitch. Looking forward to the next Kickstarter!
What I love about Root is that it comes off as a very complex game, but is actually a very simple war game that has it all. Cole managed to meld just about every game mechanic into what it is, fundamentally, a very simple area control game. I always tell new players that, although it comes off as very intimidating, mostly all a new player needs to know to be successful at slowing opponents is to understand rule, capture squares, and destroy enemy buildings.
I was not that into board games until lockdown and i did a google search on what board game i might enjoy. I got Root out of boredom and have become completely obsessed with this majestic game. I try to organise games as much as possible and have taught all my friends. Root has introduced me to board games that are as fun as the video games I play and the community around Root is way nicer than most video game communities. So for me, Root isn't just a great game, it is a game I will remember for the rest of my life as being the game that shifted my view of art, gaming and community.
Dang! That is such an exquisite coming into the hobby story! I welcome you as well! And super glad you found this video! Root is special to me too! It started my RUclips channel and became and obsession to me very quickly 😅
I love playing this game and will happily play it anytime anyone wants to, the thing that keeps it out of being my absolutely favorite though is the learning curve. I love teaching my non gamer friends the enjoyment of Root, but with Root I don't know how to give them even a chance of winning their first game. And we lead with that and they are fine with it, but I wish it was more possible for a first time player to have more of a chance of winning.
Good thoughts! When we introduce it to a player we kinda make it a habit to let them explore the game a bit and I’ll go at their pace. If they attack and attack I may attack back. If they don’t I won’t. I kinda react persay. And often time they get closer games and sometimes I have purposely let them win. They way they want to play again coming out of feeling more confident :)
Most first timers I've played with have been within a turn or two of winning, and can see how close they were. That's enough for them! I don't think any game should be winnable on the first attempt.

I found your channel because of the Disney and marvel villainous games. How do those games stack up to root in your opinion ? Also might have to try out root now since I’ve really enjoyed your villainous content.
They are completely different games. I play Villainous more casually but I play it well. Its easy to teach to anyone but you can learn to count cards and start to master aspects of the game. Root is just a lot more complex - I come from a wargame background so it appeals to me there - the theme is super unique, the biggest similarity is the asymmetry between characters/factions within the game. If your group can take more heavy rules and doesn't mind confrontation in board games, Root is great.
I've never played Root or even seen it in person (just pictures online). But for some reason the art style and components actually don't draw me in at all. However, your other reasons for loving the game, the passion you have for it & the epic music in the background have me intrigued. You've about sold me on it! Dune 1979 version? Or imperium? With dune 1979 or the gale force nine - I adore the game, but it’s not fun at lower player counts to me, also I have found it harder to teach because there a lot of small rules to keep track of. But nonetheless love the game for a lot of the reasons here
Root is in my top 3 (but with some updates it might get to top 1), everything in the video is true, I like that it is a relatively short game and that each faction has its own vibe, but there are things missing that are in my other top 2 games (TI4e and MTG: EDH). What I would need for Root to be top 1 would be to have some kind of trading or "adventure" aspect, I'm still new at the game, but I already feel like there is too much meta play, it feels like it is a bit like a puzzle game, where you need to know the optimal way of playing and you can't exactly deviate or you most likely will lose - like if a faction does this, then you must do this (alternatively you can try to table talk, but it also boils down to "I think that faction is going to win + trying to downplay your ability to win") - it kind of takes the magic out of the game.
@@LordoftheBoard The expansion with homelands, influence points, minor factions, and modular maps might boost my personal score, my group is already testing the new homeland draft and it has improved the feel of the game for me significantly.
@@justininexile3445 the homelands will bring some natural balance to certain factions and clean up a lot of setup time! I am stoked for it! :) lizards will be played more widely I presume!
Oh and since you seem to know this game pretty well, some day you’ll have to teach me how to play the Eyrie without falling into turmoil every other turn and how to beat the Electric Eyrie, since I haven’t been able to win a single game of the 8 or so I played; not even taking along the Mechanical Marquise helped 😔 There’s just something about the programming mechanic that doesn’t click with me 🙄
First question on Eyrie. Who are you starting with as your leader? My build is usually - Charismatic into Despot. And I don’t usually turmoil more than 2 times. If I do though I’ll go commander next!
@@LordoftheBoard So you always start with Turmoil on 1st turn just to get the recruitment bonus from Charismatic? I thought it’s highly depending on which corner you start from and which cards you have. I usually start with despot
@@Feldingor haha not every time. Sometimes I’ll start with charasmstic and push to recruit a lot and the go into planned turmoil around the 10 vp mark. Then despot :)
@@LordoftheBoard What for exactly? Did you make a video about something you like for the sole purpose of being appreciated, as if you had created a well-designed Board Games that many will enjoy instead of simply praising something someone did?
@@LordoftheBoard Seems like some vampire canceled my memories, since I found a few of your strategy guides in my YT history and I have no memory of watching them 😨😨
My favorite part of the game is that each faction has such little mechanics and situations that are unique to them. Allowing a lot of replay ability of not just the game, but each faction.
In person I typically play 4 or 5 player games. I play on digital too all the time. I do async games all the time in my discord! Join up and lets play!
@@LordoftheBoard I sure hope so! My copy of Root is on my shelf of shame! I've played the game three times, but not with my own copy yet! Which expansion is the best expansion??
Hi! Your channel is awesome, and root is awesome. I've been learning from channels like yours and hosting game nights with some friends and it's been super fun! In this video at about the 3:46 mark you are talking about a mechanic that I don't understand. Maybe I missed something, or maybe you are referring to a house rule that you employ? What do you mean when you say the "negotiation game?" Is there a mechanic that I'm missing or are you just referring to "shit talking" your opponents? I love the game, but I keep running into scenarios where a 4 player game can go for 4 hours and someone is losing for 3 and a half hours straight and it's not fun for them at all.
I'd love to see you do a video on a route competition and then comment on the game as it goes along as if you were a football or baseball announcer. Well maybe not baseball but definitely football lol
What do you know, Root is on discount on Steam. Well after such an inspiring video... A question though, have you played Armello? Also any other fans of Root how would you compare these two games?
I love Armello! its definitely a bit more random than Root i would say. But its more of a single Asymmetric adventure. Root is more of an Asymmetric Wargame.
Edit: I do agree with everything you say. My only critique is that although Root deserves to be called 'exquisite', it deserves some other adjectives as well. Ha.
Hi Sam, I'm very interested in purchasing Root, however I'm alittle nervous about buying it and not have the recommended numbers of players to play the game with (4). It would mostly be my husband and I playing and third player from time to time. If I can round up more than 3 players I'm wondering if it would be too hard to teach because it's rated on BGG a 3.69 and when we play board games with family and friends we're mostly bringing out games in the light to light/medium category on BGG. What do you think? Also what's your favorite expansion?
@@LordoftheBoard interesting usage of texts... from past comment s you seem to have some experience with diplomacy/negotiation-style game. Is it the case? Would you cover these type of game someday?
I have a bullet list teaching style. and then i walk through the first couple turns! and then someone just ends up hitting 30 points because players didnt know the counters yet. :) With experienced players it takes about the same length of time at 6. But the scores are super close usually!
@@LordoftheBoard Hm, thanks. I will try to revise my methods based on your feedback but I feel that even with people who are experienced with boardgames usually have a hard time to adjust to the asymmetry and tend to take ages to finish their turns :D but I guess this is just my player group.
I am really struggling to pull my gang into this, while I inch closer to my goal... the concept of CRAFTING cards, is not 100% clear to me. So, I purchased the digital version on STEAM so that I can detect the differences... still no luck. Some cards like AMBUSH just gets used without initial crafting. Could you please help #unconfuse me :)
Ambush is one of the few - Play from hand cards. Because it has no crafting cost and it states on the card when it can be played. This is same with Dominance Cards. The cards that must be crafted to be played have a crafting cost. :)
@@LordoftheBoard I am more intrigued now... need to tempt the gang with strong cocktails to steer them away from HUNGER and BETREYAL at house on the hill 😜
Hey I actually adore it solo. It’s really good. You can also really match your skill level as they have a ton of additions you can add to each faction to make it harder. And to run them it’s as simple as drawing a card and doing what the board tells you based on the cards suit :)
@@LordoftheBoard I meant like are there certain factions that work better than others solo? For example, I’ve never played the Riverfolk faction, but from reading about them they seem to be dependent on player interaction. Was just curious if an automated player could simulate that well enough?
@@IanM92 oh sorry! I see what you mean. Sadly Riverfolk and lizard cult would be the only two I wouldn’t play solo. All the others I would mix and match and I enjoy that more. I do however know some enjoy lizardcult a lot. My favorite solo game is playing The Duchy against Cats and Woodland Alliance :)
Hmm. I think that would depend. If you all like the theme enough i think so. If the theme interests you you will power through and grasp the game better even though its a bit rules heavy!
Hey! I downloaded the digital version of Root but after an hour or so on the tutorials I still kept making mistakes/not understanding some key bits of info to even progress through them all (and I don't think that I'm a TOTAL noob at learning games... :/) Do you have any tips for getting into the game a bit faster? Is there a faction I should start on, or is it important to understand everyone individually? (Really great videos btw, they encouraged me to give Root a go in the first place)
I sold Root with its expansion, personally do not think it plays well in lower player count and learning this game too new players is too much rules too learn the basic rules and every faction in play too understand what other people are doing. Also because I have “too much” games in my collection, when I haven’t played it for a while I need too learn the rules again and teach it again aswel. But I like the esthetic of the game and the mechanics.
If you play with Marquis, you're gonna loose no matter what. Does not matter the negotiation ou anything else, at some point attacking the cats is too profitable to pass, so every players does.
I would disagree here. I would say they are more susceptible for sure. But often times - especially in high level play you will see some more Marquise wins. I would say your statement is true with Digital as there is rarely negotiation. Good thoughts nonetheless!
@@LordoftheBoard Yeah, makes sense, but negotiation usually fails if players foresee a better positioning despite the game collapsing. I love Root but i'd benefit a lot to give the cat a rebalancing. It's circulating some ideas, very interesting suggestions online.

Have you tried Dune? Dune beats Root on all your points excluding the artwork.
Dune 1979 version? Or imperium? With dune 1979 or the gale force nine - I adore the game, but it’s not fun at lower player counts to me, also I have found it harder to teach because there a lot of small rules to keep track of. But nonetheless love the game for a lot of the reasons here
Gale force with all advanced rules. I agree on the player count point.
Root is in my top 3 (but with some updates it might get to top 1), everything in the video is true, I like that it is a relatively short game and that each faction has its own vibe,
but there are things missing that are in my other top 2 games (TI4e and MTG: EDH).
Good thoughts! The table talk has a lot of layers. I agree the diplomacy can sometimes feel that way though! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Builder is honestly not super good. I have a video of the turn 1 turmoil strategy.
I just recently went on a Villainous binge with my wife and after watching this video I know what I will be saving for next.

Imagine being Cole Wehrle and watching this. Great video, again!
I hope he does 😭 I keep imagining him doing so!
@@LordoftheBoard What for exactly? Did you make a video about something you like for the sole purpose of being appreciated, as if you had created a well-designed Board Games that many will enjoy instead of simply praising something someone did?
@@Big_Dai I made it for myself! 👍🏽 Cole Wherle watching is a bonus.
You seem to be pretty passionate about Root and I love this game. Question is: how is your channel slipped under my radar? 😂
Oh friend. Trust me I am incredibly passionate about teaching and playing this game. 👀
As for under the radar. I’m still a small channel. A lot of the bigger guys get most of the attention. But I really appreciate when some do find me :)
@@LordoftheBoard Seems like some vampire canceled my memories, since I found a few of your strategy guides in my YT history and I have no memory of watching them 😨😨
That vid was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It really was!
youre fire!
My favorite part of the game is that each faction has such little mechanics and situations that are unique to them. Allowing a lot of replay ability of not just the game, but each faction.
Big agree 😁 it is a whole new game every time
Do you usually play with 4 players? or 3? Do you play the digital version more often? I find it hard to find players for this game
In person I typically play 4 or 5 player games. I play on digital too all the time. I do async games all the time in my discord! Join up and lets play!
This video is so good 😍
Thank you friend :) I hope we can play root one day!
Yup I am just referring to table politics! I call it the negotiation game :)
I'd love to see you do a video on a route competition and then comment on the game as it goes along as if you were a football or baseball announcer. Well maybe not baseball but definitely football lol
Haha I know what you mean! I have thought about dissecting and commentating on Tournament games :)
I liked this video before watching it, and I fully expect to agree with everything you say.
Edit: I do agree with everything you say. My only critique is that although Root deserves to be called 'exquisite', it deserves some other adjectives as well. Ha.
Haha fair. But exquisite is kinda the top of the line there. So I ran out of other words to use at that level. I could have used perfect I guess
Hi. I would recommend buying the Automata expansion. You can play with your husband, and add more two factions.
Hello Lord,
How do you usuelle manage diplomacy in roots? Over the board, or in private ? Like when playing diplomacy or game of thron3s
We do diplomacy over the board. Occasionally we discuss it by texting if we want to do secret stuff though :)
@@LordoftheBoard interesting usage of texts... from past comment s you seem to have some experience with diplomacy/negotiation-style game. Is it the case? Would you cover these type of game someday?
Came for the superb art…
Stayed for the excellent gameplay mechanics…
Amen
You've convinced me. I bought it 😂
Yayyyy!! Got you 👏🏽 you’ll have to let me know what you think :)
It would have been my favorite if it didn't lack one thing - the lore
I think the lore is something that adapts and is created as it goes. But I can see what you mean!
Yeah the artwork is something else
Big agree. All Kyle Ferrins work is just perfect.
@08:19 6 player 2,5 hour game with 4 newbies... just... just how? O.O
Rooooooooooooot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Evan 👋 it's Ty
ROOT IS KING
I am really struggling to pull my gang into this, while I inch closer to my goal... the concept of CRAFTING cards, is not 100% clear to me. So, I purchased the digital version on STEAM so that I can detect the differences... still no luck. Some cards like AMBUSH just gets used without initial crafting. Could you please help #unconfuse me :)
Ambush is one of the few - Play from hand cards. Because it has no crafting cost and it states on the card when it can be played. This is same with Dominance Cards. The cards that must be crafted to be played have a crafting cost. :)
Whoaaaa!!! Makes sense and simplifies things… if it has a cost, must be precrafted!
@@CoconutMonkeey Exactly! which is the majority of the cards. ambush and dominance are surprises!
@@LordoftheBoard I am more intrigued now... need to tempt the gang with strong cocktails to steer them away from HUNGER and BETREYAL at house on the hill 😜
@@CoconutMonkeey haha I wish you luck. Such a good game :)
Have you ever played Root solo? And if so, how do you recommend playing it solo?
I really want to play root I got one. But i can’t understand the mechanics how to play i really want you to teach me in the person I wish ❤
Sam, Do you think we van jump from Villanous and Zombicide to ROOTS?
Hmm. I think that would depend. If you all like the theme enough i think so. If the theme interests you you will power through and grasp the game better even though its a bit rules heavy!
Trinston was here . .
So glad to see Trinston in the house!
You need some words other than love and adore 😛
This is true. 😂😂
How about exquisite?
Random but do you like Marvel Champions and the expansions?
I have not gotten into it. I hear a ton of good things though :)
petition to make this game into an animated cartoon series...
I already am!
@@LordoftheBoard 🙃
Hey! I downloaded the digital version of Root but after an hour or so on the tutorials I still kept making mistakes/not understanding some key bits of info to even progress through them all (and I don't think that I'm a TOTAL noob at learning games... :/)
Do you have any tips for getting into the game a bit faster? Is there a faction I should start on, or is it important to understand everyone individually?
(Really great videos btw, they encouraged me to give Root a go in the first place)
I would stick with either cats until you're comfortable with rule, combat, battling, crafting, and movement. Then you can play any faction.
Nice! yeah def not for everyone. But it certainly feels like it was made for me.
Beware the green toast!
What is the best way to teach Root?
I would say going over golden rules first. Then going over specific abilities. And explain the goal of the game and how to get points :)
What is this "negotiation game" you speak of?
8:00 what is your favourite player count? 5?
5 but if I could only play at 1 player count for the rest of my life 4.
Meaning 5 feels grander and more political talking but 4 runs smoother
noice.
Thank you!
@@noahnoah7799 have you done Adset? The new marauder expansion has added some cards to setup for more competitive games and they include a significant buff to the starting positions of the cats!
@@LordoftheBoard Interesting. I'll check it once available. Thank you for sharing the info.
@@noahnoah7799 yeah of course!

If you want to enjoy Root do not play the cats.
Whaaaat! I love me some cats :)
Tis review seems pretty biased. No steep learning curve?
Anyone can learn it easily?
Even beginners have a good chance to win?
Really?
This isn’t a review 😂 I never say it is a review. It’s me saying the 10 reasons I love this game and my experiences with it. I’m a good teacher and have never had people struggle that hard to learn this game.
I hate this game
Haha that’s a strong word! Its fantastic to me
