      I LOVED the art and theme of this game so much but I was never going to be able to play it enough with a lot of my normal game groups to ever really "get" it (and they would have given up before the rules explanation was even over). I tried it three times, always playing the Eyrie, and never fully got a handle of what to do (close, but no cigar). Definitely made me feel dumber than I am but it also finally cemented the fact that my brain just isn't really wired for heavy (or even medium, in some cases) strategy games. Broke my heart to sell it but it went to a good home with a friend that I can play it with if I ever need to.

    Totally agree with this. I love root because while mid-game, it can be AWESOME, but the end is always a bit..blah.
    It's basically a journey game vs a destination one-the fun isn't inn finally conquering your opponent or setting up a perfect machine for success (like, for example brass), but rather in the fun ecosystem of the game.
    Also yeah, the otters are so fun. You need at least two opponents with lots of pieces, but its a great prisoners dilemma for everyone else: If no-one buys your stuff, they all compete and you lose, if ONE person buys your stuff they get an edge and can win, but if *everyone* buys your things to keep up with everyone else buying your things you can swing an easy victory.

    I feel this warrants its own comment, expanded from elsewhere, in response to the "arbitrary ending is a common criticism of Root":
    I think it's because it's actually the opposite of what people complain about, ironically enough. Efka said it, "If I had one more turn, then I would have won!" It's exactly because it's so close and people feel they had a chance that they feel it's sudden.
    So the myth is so real, that it's missed. Because people think of how they could've won, rather than focusing on the tightness.
    Think of a 100 meter race too. It's usually close. There's an arbitrary finish line. Because otherwise, people might just keep passing one another. The "earned victory" feeling tends to come when you crush opponents, because it's really your win, rather than anyone's win.
    So the myth is so true, that it becomes a myth.

    As someone who owns this game. Yes, leaving any Factions uncheck can, and will, lead to them snowballing towards victory. I was playing the Alliance and I left the Vagabond alone for two turns since it only had 4 pts only to gain 9 pts in a single turn and becoming difficult to stop.

      For differences, they stated that the second printing will be fixing some small production issues, some typos in the game and will not include the card holders on the expansion as it wasn’t feasible cost wise.
      For third printing, it will be a kickstarter at the beginning of this year and the main game should be the same as second printing. They will be aiming to introduce 2 new factions and a new map to my understanding

    I keep on struggling to understand exactly what makes Root's 30 VP insta-win condition feel arbitrary as opposed to other games. Like Twilight Imperium, in that game as soon as you reach 10 VP, you also win. What really makes Root different?

    • @dapperghastmeowregard
      @dapperghastmeowregard 6 лет назад +5

      Nothing really. Every game is technically a VP game. Checkmating your opponent's king scores you a point, first one to one point wins.

    • @IslanKleinknecht
      @IslanKleinknecht 6 лет назад +2

      @@dapperghastmeowregard But there has to be something more to it, as I seem to hear this criticism a lot for Root, that the ultimate victor feels arbitrary.

    • @TheMrE
      @TheMrE 6 лет назад +3

      Nick Clinite Well.. it is arbitrary, there’s no argument there. I think the issue is not so much the arbitrary end value but the effect it has on gameplay. Unless most players are neck to neck it’s hard for everybody to be engaged at the end. This is not a “problem” in most games because of the use of hidden scoring. The game could end at 30 points, but, who is the winner?! We won’t know until scoring all points. Sadly Root lacks a hidden point system.

    • @jonedvinz
      @jonedvinz 6 лет назад +3

      Simply put you need to be clever in whole other way to win TI rather then ROOT
      Twilight has randomised public objectives that everyone is racing for instead of Roots personal objectives that other people can only stop you from achiving. Even if some races in TI are more capable of fullfiling som objectives rather then others it is still a race to complete the objectives rather then crossing the finish line by doing the same actions over and over again.
      Rather then just spending another turn pumping out another sawmill and thus wining the game in Root. In TI you instead manage to gather together 16 trade goods to fullfill the first public objective then you invade your neighboors homesystem to fullfil you secret objective and finally through some clever use of action cards take control of the hidden lazax armory on litra IV granting you the last vp to win the game... it gives a whole other level of finality that root just lacks.
      You can (almost) never get VPs the same way twice in TI where as in Root you can only get vps through some specific actions. All in all to win i TI you need to be clever and use strategies on a whole other level compared to Root.
      (This is the best way I can put it)

    • @LukeVenables
      @LukeVenables 6 лет назад +2

      I love Root and will literally never complain when it makes it to the table but the arbitrary nature of the win condition is one criticism I have for it as well. • @Fluxquark
    @Fluxquark 5 лет назад +11

    I really like asymmetrical games and figuring out engines, but don't like Root at all based on a couple plays. Because each faction can easily run away with a win if not kept in check by the rest, every player needs to have a similar level of understanding of the game to make it interesting. Which means that whenever you introduce a new player, you have to run a couple practice games to get them up to speed before you can play for real. This is true for other games to some extent, but is a massively bigger issue here. Without an effective Marquis, the Eyrie will just steamroll the board. A beginner Vagabond will either tip the scales completely in another player's favour, or fail to stop someone from running away with the win. The rate of scoring points is so different for every faction that not many players will be able to correctly asses who is actually winning and who isn't. This makes this a game you can only play with a pretty regular group that is evenly matched.
    Also, the rules are needlessly confusing and many factions seem to easily lead to massive analysis paralysis.

    There will be a B-side know how the factions on the Exp. Works?. And This game have the same problem as Vast, that the game is about keeping everyone in check, while doing your stuff to get VP, that is why hitting the other players gives you VP except for the vagabond sometimes; and that's the main problem cause if you are playing with a player that don't play like this the whole Root balance is broken, and the game start to feel unbalance.

    There is no greater insult to an asymmetric game than saying one of the factions is harder/easier to win with. So I don’t understand how you can suggest the expansion given what you said about the factions.

    Root is a deceitful game. I'm glad I played it a few times and avoided buying into it. It's just a king making game. There's absolutely no sense of achievement whatsoever.

    • @JohnFlower-NZ

      The game designer, Cole Werhle, spoke at GDN on king making (video her on YT). He chose to make that an important part of the game. That talk was about 40 minutes long. Along the way he specifically states that the game is for people who are comfortable with unfairness and that before inviting someone to play he asks, "Are you comfortable with placing pieces on the board and having other people take them off?". In the talk he examines how boardgame design has changed over the last few thousand years and that currently a sense of fairness is a popular focus for most boardgame designers today. His talk wouldn't change your mind, but it does provide context.

    Played one game, as the wood land alliance. Got to do fuck all game. Placed myself quite well. But the vagabond and the birds just boosted each other and one of them won before I even got my third village. So... I had basically ZERO influence on the game and lost. Pretty game, but will never play it again.
