This one really speaks to me. I love how small and compact it is, I like the simple theme, and will most likely play this most at solo -2 players. Sometimes I really struggle to learn Euro games if I can't connect to the art or theme, so some highly rated games like Pipeline 😂 and Brass will never make it to my table. Even though some people may not click with this one, there's always a space for a game in somebody's collection.
„Euro boardgame fatigue“ is definitely a current theme on the channels I follow. First SUSD with their review of Golem, then two German channels that basically said that this year‘s Essen Spiel got them thinking if they actually need the newest Euro hype that’s just a remix of existing mechanisms. This being said, I am totally supporting this hyper-enthusiastic review of something that’s otherwise just fine.
@@felipearango4257 one of them was BrettBallett (the latest „Brett zum Sonntag“). The other one I‘m not so sure, but I remember this coming up in a discussion as well. Maybe Better Boardgames?
The problem is that it often is hard to get people addicted to euros to play other things. I can bring Stationfall or some other delightful chaotic mess and get a no as the next Concordia map is laid out...
@@piesandhiking4943 ruclips.net/video/xJApU3RRNhs/видео.htmlsi=_xlTGcKs8O71Cdea True, so it’s not really a new thing for them, but they reiterated their Euro fatigue with the Golem review.
Great review! Thank you for all the work you do :D We really enjoyed this one, and glad to see that you at least liked it ;) Our games has lasted very short, between 45-60 minutes (2-4 players), and I think that is a perfect playtime for this game for my taste! Looking forward to the Voidfall review! Have fun with Super Mario :D
Hard to take this review seriously when Elaine is clearly in the pocket of Big Waffle. Even the constant plugging of Pipeline shows this - what are pipelines for? Transporting oil. What’s the best way to cook a potato waffle for maximum flavour and crunch? In oil. It all connects!
While I can totally agree with the euro game fatigue sentiment, for me your comparisons and critique completely miss the mark. How can you compare it to a super heavyweight like pipeline, which is not only 3 times the price, but also at least twice the playtime? Thats like comparing codenames to blood on the clocktower, makes no sense. The 'lack of narrative' also made me chuckle, can't wait for your review of chess where you deduce points for lack of world building. TLDR: yes it's just another soulless euro, but not due to the reasons you mention.
If there was ever a game to challenge the name of a channel, this is it... They weren't included. They just managed to keep showing up when no one was looking. Puns that is.
I really really like and enjoy your style (you two both are hilarious!) thank you for you both and thank you for your channel and amazing videos and hard work
Nice review, I must say having collected a number of Euro board games, it’s important to find games that add something new, introduce good theming and take board gaming forward in some way. I guess as your collection grows there are normally diminishing marginal returns.
I will likely pick this up because I also enjoy Red Cathedral and Shinkansen Zero-Kei and generally this design duo's brand of efficient euro, but i'm not expecting anything mind blowing
You have a Thermapen! One of you is a serious cook! I know this is a board game channel, but I have mad respect for anyone who cares enough about their cooking to pony up the dollars for one of those.
I was interested to play this one. But i was also interested to play Atk Nova, and after a dozen plays of that one, I feel like you were right about everything...
This is such a nice, smell well produced package. I just wish it was something more than kind of a generic Euro. It's not bad, but also deeply unexciting. Wait, pipeline isn't a dry, minimalist euro? I guess it is indulgent in a few spots.
Played at 2 the other day and I wasn't a fan. It's way more luck based than it would appear. First player has a huge advantage, first of all, and it's so limited in how many turns you get that you can't really afford to concentrate in any one area for too long. The cards changing can also blow any plans you have and make a critical resource scarce for a big part of the game.
Lovely review, I was on the brink of buying this one but I will give it some time, head-down silent games aren't something I look forward to playing with my partner. Thanks for the review!
If "they" were polish, theyxwould call her efka probably cause it sounds like a femqle name for ud? Like Ewa -> Ewka? (W is pronounced in polish like V so close enough to f)
I don't know why, but this might be one of your best review videos. Funny, concise, thoughtful. Amongst the many NPI reviews, this isn't just one of them.
Elaine nailed it at the end. Even with all its gaming qualities, the "narrative" in White Castle is somewhat pretty bland for me too. Also, the result/boardstate at the end is not so exiting in comparison with other Euros (even in the Red Cathedral, you seem to achieve something more impressing than in White Castle). That being said, I can see a niche for this game in my collection as relatively short brain burner (if I play it with the right group: no AP players)
Like other's posted, I love the Voidfall jokes here as that game was far better than I expected when we played it a couple weeks ago! This sounds ok, but not one to go out and buy.
Wife was listening and when "potato waffles" came up, she was like, "Is that a thing? Because that sounds pretty good to me." (If you can't tell, we are American)
Beep Bop! It's a little Euro machine! Press some buttons, cool things happen, combo, get some points! Fine by me, but there are more and more of these, aren't there? At least it's in a little box, which other games should do too (looking at you, Santa Monica)
I am firmly in the “I now hate Euro Games” category. They all feel so SAAAAMEY. I basically avoid any game that ends with “and everyone adds up VP to see who won!”
That explanation of the game at the beginning can be used to explain almost all Eurogames. Latter on you explained how you cannot plan your actions because of how random the available actions are in the game. This also applied to many Eurogames, there is always some input randomness that will not allow players to really strategize and that will have a huge impact on the outcome of the game, but they feel like they do. Even if players think their decisions matter, most of the times, they don't. I never understood how Eurogames became so popular. Publishers have achieve this with their marketing strategies and by paying BGG and board gaming youtubers to push their newest games. At the end Eurogames are very samey and seem like they are kind of easy to conceive, maybe they are difficult to develop and fine tune, but the idea for an Eurogame and its initial design process is most times very simple, just provide the players with actions that give resources that allow them to have better actions and some combos, make sure everything scores victory points and just use the very unthematic and boring victory condition of "having the most victory points at the end".
I found this game pretty bland. Really doesn't anything new or better than other games with similar mechanisms or flow. Really looking forward to your review of Voidfall.
My wife says they are all the same game, play mechanics get points the most points win.... My point is: Some Eurogames are as exiting as filling numbers and formulaes in an Excelsheet 😢 These games feel constructed and not about designed for player fun
I freaking hate these games that pretend to be "Japan themed" but then proceed to go against every Japanese design principle, including graphics. This really is the White Castle of board games :P
Elaine reading the manual to Voidfall while reviewing White Castle might be the most passive aggressive thing I´ve ever seen.

Elaine's humor and dry delivery are what brought me here and what keeps me coming back. (I subscribed after that head to brick skit)
Yay Elaine!!! I love it when you're both in a video.

Elaine is back! I love to see her in videos!! And this is a real entertaining one.
I just love the entertainment factor you bring to a still very helpful review. Never gets boring!
That potato waffle example felt like it might have some childhood memories attached to it
oh hey Efka is in this video, always nice to seen Efka working with Efka and also the dog (also called Efka) is in the video neat!

It's good.
Thank you for the great review of one of the board games of all time
Does it come with a side of fries though?
RIP red bridge :(
The fact that this game comes with a +80 score chit feels like it's purposefully mocking me.

void-fall, Void-fall, Void-Fall, Void-FALL, VOID-FALL, VOID-FALL!!!!
Simply because I'm excited to hear the collective analysis of Elaine and Efka.
I kept hearing "courtier" as "corgi". It made the game sound cuter, though not more exciting.
