    Part 1( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I start the tear down process. I break down the chainsaw down to the piston to discover that internal engine damage has occurred. The piston is severely damaged.
    Part 2( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I complete the remainder of the engine tear down. I find additional components damaged and the culprit of the engine failure. I make a list of what is required to rebuild and place my order.
    Part 3( • Stihl MS290 Rebuild: M... ): In this video I install the new complete engine assembly. During assembly I encounter a few minor issues. To finish it off I fire up this newly rebuilt chainsaw!

    I just did the same thing you did, took the piston assembly out before pulling off the clutch. Just got everything broken down, hoping your rebuild was successful so I can get some help putting all the pieces back together!

      Everything worked great for 9-12 months when I had a decompression valve failure. I rebuilt it again with a $35 cylinder and piston but think the problem was actually a bad spark plug gap.

    Frankly I'm amazed that now these mods are done. As a very long time mechanic I've done those mods when the 029/039 came out 30+ years ago. In those days it wasn't much more to make that move & now even less thanks to the cheap stuff.

    Just bought one with the same piston issue! Comment on here says it was run too lean? Sounds about right

    On Amazon, it's $29.99 for an MS310 kit: You will get: 1pc cylinder + 1pc piston + 1pc piston pin + 2pc clips + 2pc rings + 1pcs needle bearing

    Gas not mixed will definitely do that

    I believe the bearing failure was due to it having the wrong type of bearings in it.

    • @ThriftyGarage
      @ThriftyGarage  8 месяцев назад

      That is possible. At this point this chainsaw has been torn down at least 3x to my knowledge.

      @@ThriftyGarage I have an 029 myself that has bad crank bearings. Instead of fixing it I’m gonna just do the cheap 039/MS390 conversion myself.

    I have several Stihls, several more than any other saws.....good saws, mostly.....I think I have them mostly because they are easier to blow up.....if it's German, it's complicated well beyond necessity.....Stihls are pricey right out of the box and parts prices are an outrage...."you may buy better but you won't pay more".......hard workers, great cutters and rugged well made examples of complexity.....my 660's and 440's can't be beat (in my heart) and I have a 390 that is a very good general work saw; the others I need to find a home for.....Echo and Husqy are simpler, just as rugged and serviceable and powerful as the Stihls and sometimes more so......they all make good saws, I just have my preferences for these reasons.....

      You prefer complicated and more expensive? I’ve been pretty happy with the Stihl products I have owned.

      @@ThriftyGarage I don't buy them.....I fix them and use or rehome them.....I've NEVER bought one new or otherwise....Stihl saws are good saws----overall

      Why? This saw had been crushed by 2 trees before I bought it. I’ve put it to good use and it still runs like a top!

    You ran it too lean.

      I purchased the chainsaw in this state, with the intent to install a bigger bore cylinder and piston.
