AMG's GT R Roadster Makes NO Sense - But does it need to?

Why does the GT R Roadster exist? The GT R is a Track focused version of the AMG GT family main 2 door coupé: a series of cars built to battle the likes of the Porsche 911 Carrera series. The R takes it's inspiration from the #MercedesAMG GT3 car, sans natural engine, it has active aero, 9 stage traction control, wider body and track, rear wheel steer and a whole host of stiffening and rigidity measures including the use of light materials. All to create a car that could rival a Porsche GT3.
The GT R Pro barely made any sense, adding some more rigidity, aero and little else, while removing much of the GTR's daily charm. While the GT Black Series #supercar truly sits alone as a 730BHP monster car.
So why take a dynamic car where the Nth's and 10'ths matter so much, and dumb it down by making it heavier and less dynamic? It can be perhaps forgiven as it's a limited 750 unit car, but still, things don't bode well for #AMG's latest roadster: unless you look at the past, where it joins other limited edition AMG track roadsters too! It doesn't make sense for normal people. I love S63 Cabriolet more too. But it's a smart move for AMG to make the GTR Roadsters in my opinion. Supercar collectors like Shmee would definitely love this car way more than S63 Cabriolet. Many people spent 200K for a special, ridiculous car rather than a reasonable one.

I can tell you exactly why they made this car. Nobody buys these cars to track them. It's literally a hot rod that you take out on nice weekends. It makes all the sense.

95% of these “track focused road cars” never touch a track so why does it matter if rigidity is “lost” because of it now being a roadster. At least it looks insanely good and is way cheaper than a speedster or a Turbo S cabriolet. AMG made this car knowing that it can be used on a track but will most likely be puttering up and down rodeo drive or around Monaco.

I’m quite certain you don’t actually notice any wobbling through steering compared to coupe GT R. Mr. Amg is here just repeating what he has been told and heard. I have a Cayman GT4 and a Boxster Spyder. The latter performes 10/10 times as rigid as the the GT4 even when pushed to limit. This AMG GT R Roadster is no W124 Cabrio. In GT R Coupe and Roadster the rigidity difference is so minimal that this kind of a non-racing-driver wouldn’t be able to spot the difference. Especially on a Sunday drive like that. This coming from a GT R Coupe owner 🙃. Apart from that, a great review 👍.
Might have to drive one back to back on the track in advance group to tell the difference.

My favourite Mercedes of all time. The combination of luxury and race combined is what I always wanted. Personally I would never drive it on the track. A perfect car to hit the yacht clubs at night.
I totally agree with you - silly, makes no sense, but i love it - what i wouldn’t give to try and drive an AMG GT (any of them)!
But i have fun with my 420hp M235i, and i know i’ll love my next car even more, which will be a C43 AMG (when that time comes)

Gorgeous again though. A wonderful sound from the V8 too - I hate all those forced pops and bangs. This is much more old school. I think it is a stunner.

Agree with the other commenters here. Not one of the owners is going to be splitting hairs on how well it handles vs the coupe or whether the track car should be a drop top. No one cares. It’s a top GT model (almost) now made more unique for the lack of roof. That’s why people will buy it. Nobody thinks “oh I think I’ll go for the regular GT as it’s more suited for my need of daily driving” no, if you can afford it you get the most expensive, top end model 9 times out of 10.

The looks are great, except the "wing" spools the lines and is it functional with this roof line.
Very few care about tracking such an expensive car. It's all for looks, emotion and bragging rights. To me all these "luxery track cars" make no sense. Going around a track in a pro cart is more exciting and fun without the cost.

Raz I am glad that you talked about the wobble in the steering as almost no reviewer does.. is the facelift that much quieter than the pre fl? I have heard it sounds almost the same in the gtr lineup?
I don't know about the roadster, but I have driven the coupe versions of the GTR and GTR Pro. Honestly they still features a lovely muscular rumble, and when you really push them I think they're fairly loud. The problem is that the pops/crackles are significantly reduced and the growl is somewhat softer/muffled due to the OPF.
From the inside you still get that nice rumble that resonates throughout the entire interior. You still have so much feel through the steering wheel/seats/etc... It still feels alive in my opinion, just less aggressive than before.
Big fan of the GTR, even bigger fan of this. If the GTR is a GT3 rival and the pro a GT3 RS rival, that would make this a rival to the speedster that’s looks A LOT better and you’re going to be able to get it for 1/3 the price! I’m liking it!
I can't afford one of these. So I own an R231 SL500 it has zero scuttle shake. As Chris Harris found.
I presume as it's a ground up convertible. Rather then a coupe with roof removed. Either way I love it

can you get the original amg sound back if installed an aftermarket exhaust system from renntech for example ?
Yes easily. The RENNtech sports cats + downpipes sound incredible. Loud, aggressive, nice muscular rumble, sharper pops/crackles. The only thing is if you want the previous pops/crackles back you’ll need an ECU tune because newer models only pop/crackle a few times.
Love Raz, but the hard on/off throttle messes with my head.
On the car, it doesn’t need to exist.
If you want a track focused coupe, you want a fixed roof. If you want to pose and feel close to the elements, the GTC is more than enough.

The GTC Roadster looks way more elegant and it's only slightly less in HP. 550 HP instead of 577 HP

The 992 Turbo s cabriolet is not a direct competitor?
The Turbo S isn't track-focused, unlike the GT AMG's. A drop top GT3 would be more similar (perhaps the speedster).
@@HiddenWen it doesn’t have to be MARKETED as a track car to be a competitor. And the 992 turbo S is a competitor. They both will rip at the track and a 992 turbo s will out track 99% of most cars you can buy.
When u look at a car u need to stop seeing it as numbers. 2+2+3 doesn't always = 7. Just cos it's derived from a track car doenst mean u have to track it. I'm just glad we have the option to have a soft top in my favourite car right now. Serious contender for my next motor and I'm debating about the convertible. I'll never track it but it'll be for fun road use. I'll never once think did it need to exist?

It depends if you see these less compromised cars (gt3 rs, gt2 rs, 600/675/765 LT, Pista/Speciale etc) as track cars or just heavily driver focused ones that work on both road and track ?
I'm in the latter camp.
These toys are as happy to do the commute or shopping as they are to rip around the Nordschleife - a jack of all trades so to speak.
This particular one is a roadster so your saying that makes it less of a track car, maybe thats true - but it hasn't stopped Ferrari with convertible version of the Scuderia, Speciale and Pista (all of which suffer like this AMG with less rigidity due to the loss of roof) it hasn't stopped Lamborghini with convertible versions of the Gallardo Superleggera (named Spyder Performante) and Huracan Performante, & McLaren with spyder version of both 600LT and 675LT produced and a 765LT spyder announced.
Honestly Raz I think for once your wrong here - these are drivers cars and a convertible version adds an element to the experience for some people without ruining the 'drivers car' part of the package.

I think it's a competitor to McClaren drop top, 911 turbo convertible. Let's not forget the Sl Amg's and the gt series basically replaced the Sl i know they built them at the same time but the Sl sales suck.

It's quite different being able to retract the roof up to 30 mph than to just 30 km/h.
Raz...if they made a yellow one with green seats and pink wheels, they would sell...there are enough punters out there who are addicted and bored enough to want one. ...think BMW and the Bugs Bunny grille..horrible but it sells. I always have liked the roadster but as a GTS where it sits better as a model in the range. I have an R231 SL and can say that I have never noticed scuttle shake with the roof open or closed which is unlike a friends BMW X3M’ roadster which feels like it is coming unscrewed every time you drive it. I would like to think I will be changing to a good AMG GTR next year....should it be coupe though? Many cars are confused..like going for a morning run in Wellington boots or digging the garden in ballet pumps..all possible but never ideal!! Schmee will never get the pram..he has no time to ever have need of it...and a poor little passenger might not like being left at DubCistoms to be wrapped in Cerulean Blue when one day old...and he would be dismayed to find that a child was not available in a range of colours and options! Find that SLK 55 and an SL 55AMG to compare performance with value..is £20,000 on a good SL55 a better way of enjoying open skies and performance compared to £180,000 on that new version???😃😃😎😎
