But his channel has great content, excellent videography, top of the line cars, and very funny banter between him and yanni from Yannimize. The fact that Matt Watson is a journalist for this channel is one of the reasons why it's so successful. And why he is so successful

For a few short seasons, Australian V8 Supercars were graced with the presence of Team Erebus AMG E63’s with flat plane crank V8’s. One of the greatest sounding racing V8’s you’ll ever hear!
I get why you think this, but the sound this makes isnt because of emission regulations but because the car uses a different crank plane. This crank plane is called a flat plane and this is also used in ferrari v8’s. You might’ve noticed that it sounds just like one. The reason why they choose this crank is for smoother power delivery which makes it even faster.
The thing about flat-plane v8s is they do sound like slightly beefed 4 cylinders. The exhaust pulse widths are just doubled. A cross-plane’s pulse widths are uneven. The only cross plane i4 I can think of is a motorbike engine (I’ll check to see which one unless someone beats me to it), which sounds like a half sized cross-v8. This engine is essentially two traditional i4s met at the crank, but one i4 bank’s firing is offset 90° from the other. Update: that cross plane i4 I was thinking of is the Yamaha R1 engine.

An AMG GT Black Series has different needs and style than say a Chiron. While I can never afford one I think one of the main considerations of buying a special supercar like this is sound and the sound really puts me off it. Many people have been commenting about the sound through the speakers, which I agree is ridiculous when you have a V8 in a track-focused car with supposedly reduced sound-deadening from a 'regular' AMG GT, and also many people have mentioned about OPFs making the car sounding very muted, which is very true ....BUT.... it also sounds terrible from the outside in general. It sounds like a 4 cylinder, because it has a flat-plane crank V8 that uses a particular exhaust manifold design and cylinder firing order. The Ferrari F355 and Shelby GT350 have flat-plane crank V8s but they don't sound like a 4 cylinder, because they have that high pitched whale sound. I'm sorry, but for a car that costs £335,000, there are SO MANY cars that cost FAR LESS than that, that sound MILES better. I know that this car is incredibly fast on the straights and in the corners, BUT i'm sorry, if Mercedes AMG have the audacity to charge £335,000 of your hard-earned money, I expect much better than that, especially when Mercedes Benz are a huge company with large development budgets.

I know many tracks in the UK have stringent sound restrictions, and it would be a bit shite if you paid for your car to be trailered all the way to a track day and then weren't allowed it on the track. Anyway, it doesn't really make much sense to focus on the sound of the car when people that can afford this aren't buying it for the sound of the exhaust. They can afford other cars in their garage for that.

Wow, that exhaust is extremely restricted. A V8 TT w/a Flatplane Crank should sound pretty mean, but it just sounds like a V6 through that exhaust. For 335k you would think it would have lightweight Titanium and valves to give it a much more exotic and aggressive sound from that FPC V8 when you want it, and/or go to the track (which is kind of the point of the Black Version.) A much more aggressive Inconel Exhaust system would be the first mod I would do if I had one!
All modern performance cars sound pretty flat. An exhaust mod is mandatory if you want some sound. The cabin noise in this is also fake and it's quite obvious as well lol
@@dedit4243 yeah but awd isnt great in a track focused car. For example in a rolling start rwd kicks down faster because the power delivery need to go just to the rear wheels but in a awd the power needs to go to every wheel. Also awd has worse steering grip in higher cornering forces.
I love this car because it feels like a front engine amg interpretation of a 911 GT3. Although it has power similar to a 911 GT2, it has Carbon bucket seats, a roll cage, a BIG WANG, a dual clutch transmission, high revving engine, and it is essentially a road going version of the race car. Good job Mercedes.

The thing about flat-plane v8s is they do sound like slightly beefed 4 cylinders. The exhaust pulse widths are just doubled. A cross-plane’s pulse widths are uneven. The only cross plane i4 I can think of is a motorbike engine (I’ll check to see which one unless someone beats me to it), which sounds like a half sized cross-v8. This engine is essentially two traditional i4s met at the crank, but one i4 bank’s firing is offset 90° from the other.
Update: that cross plane i4 I was thinking of is the Yamaha R1 engine.

And how is that a surprise for you? When the manufacturer is testing the car before launch, they partner up with the tyre maker, in this case Michelin and they tweak the tyres to what suits the car best. Is that so hard to comprehend? An AMG GT Black Series has different needs and style than say a Chiron. Even tho they use the same tyre type Cup 2s, they are different, one's made to handle downforce and cornering the other is made to handle VMax

It’s a great car but you can’t deny that it’s the worst sounding flat plain crank V8. While I can never afford one I think one of the main considerations of buying a special supercar like this is sound and the sound really puts me off it. Saying that tho I’ll never afford one so I can’t really comment 🤣🤣

Many people have been commenting about the sound through the speakers, which I agree is ridiculous when you have a V8 in a track-focused car with supposedly reduced sound-deadening from a 'regular' AMG GT, and also many people have mentioned about OPFs making the car sounding very muted, which is very true ....BUT.... it also sounds terrible from the outside in general. It sounds like a 4 cylinder, because it has a flat-plane crank V8 that uses a particular exhaust manifold design and cylinder firing order. The Ferrari F355 and Shelby GT350 have flat-plane crank V8s but they don't sound like a 4 cylinder, because they have that high pitched whale sound. I'm sorry, but for a car that costs £335,000, there are SO MANY cars that cost FAR LESS than that, that sound MILES better. I know that this car is incredibly fast on the straights and in the corners, BUT i'm sorry, if Mercedes AMG have the audacity to charge £335,000 of your hard-earned money, I expect much better than that, especially when Mercedes Benz are a huge company with large development budgets.

@smilepermile As it's aimed at the track, maybe sound restrictions were one of the focuses? I know many tracks in the UK have stringent sound restrictions, and it would be a bit shite if you paid for your car to be trailered all the way to a track day and then weren't allowed it on the track. Anyway, it doesn't really make much sense to focus on the sound of the car when people that can afford this aren't buying it for the sound of the exhaust. They can afford other cars in their garage for that.

@@Hammar89 if you're comparing it to the standard 4.0 V8, yes, But I think many of us were hoping that Mercedes could produce a flat crank V8 that might sound even a little bit exotic. That's why when we all heard that the GT black series would have a flat crank, a lot of us were so hopeful.
Wow, that exhaust is extremely restricted. A V8 TT w/a Flatplane Crank should sound pretty mean, but it just sounds like a V6 through that exhaust. For 335k you would think it would have lightweight Titanium and valves to give it a much more exotic and aggressive sound from that FPC V8 when you want it, and/or go to the track (which is kind of the point of the Black Version.) A much more aggressive Inconel Exhaust system would be the first mod I would do if I had one!

All modern performance cars sound pretty flat. An exhaust mod is mandatory if you want some sound. The cabin noise in this is also fake and it's quite obvious as well lol

Because it's a front-mid engine with rwd so it would not have enough traction/grip for such a high rpm at standing launch.

@@dedit4243 yeah but awd isnt great in a track focused car. For example in a rolling start rwd kicks down faster because the power delivery need to go just to the rear wheels but in a awd the power needs to go to every wheel. Also awd has worse steering grip in higher cornering forces.
The GTR was always a dream car of mine, but now with the black series I think that has to be my new dream car
I love this car because it feels like a front engine amg interpretation of a 911 GT3. Although it has power similar to a 911 GT2, it has Carbon bucket seats, a roll cage, a BIG WANG, a dual clutch transmission, high revving engine, and it is essentially a road going version of the race car. Good job Mercedes.
