It's really a shame how much his voice was shot and a lot of his range was lost due to the constant touring and his food poisoning incident. Just listen to his natural power here, and his ability to belt out the high notes... He sounds fucking great.
Awesome to see LaBrie hitting those high notes so clean and with such clarity. It doesn't matter how he is now, he has left his mark and it's videos like this that ensure he'll be remembered.
I am pretty sure they told him to start singing "grittier" somewhere around this point to sound more metal. That's why it sounds so much cleaner here, because he changed it on purpose (even though it ended up hurting his voice a lot, and then of course the accident). Just listen to the difference going from Images to Awake, it was much grittier on purpose.
Ye, it is true! The changing of his voice is somewhere by this time. And in present day he hasn't the crispy sound. Very digital voice in the newer song.
@@burakverid646 Yes, I think people are realising now that he just pushed his voice far too hard live, the "food poisoning" incident had little to nothing to do with it.
5:11 the best shit i've heard out of LaBrie in his whole career... such a shame how this kind of potential was lost after his food poisoning incident...
Well, he goes higher than in any other recorded performance... but from 4:35 to 4:42... that's way lower than in Live at the Marquee, and that's probably his highest scream ever. Amazing singer. DT forever and for the afterlife.
James' voice is so smooth! On the higher notes even as soon as Live in Tokyo he is letting (or purposely makeing) them sound gritty. But it sounds so perfect here that I almost think the highest notes "this one controls" and "I'm in the valley" etc are falsetto. But then I remember "it's James Labrie"
If you listen to every attribute of this version as opposed to the other live versions of this song, you will find that his amazing clearness and no distortion vocally makes this LaBrie at his absolute best. It was at the beginning of the I&W Tour. If his voice could have kept going like this he would made every singer in the world look weak for a long time to come.
James Labrie is a and was a phenomenal singer he has stood the test of times and really proved a lot to the listeners whether you like him or hate him you can't deny his ability to sing out beautiful notes... And James Labrie is not just a metal singer he is a diverse and versatile singer just like the rest of Dream Theater aren't just a meal band they are huge diverse and versatile band that have covered so much ground in music genres!!!:)
Hi. Being a singer and listened a LOT of DT live videos from different eras, I must say, this show is the most impressive LaBrie's performance ever! I can imagine that even he himself felt that he could control his voice perfectly and could reach any high notes on that night. Thank's for the upload. Too bad that this can't be the way it always sounds. But human voice is fragile. Here we can hear it's nearest perfection.
Those good days when James used to (be able to) sing notes of the fifth octave like nothing, imagine what Dream Theater could have been if he hadn't lost his voice...
Amazing, just amazing how labrie hits those notes, but when you saw the score dvd, there is hope he gets back to old strenght, if he keeps training his voice like he did for the dvd ;)
One of the best performances ive seen from them, everything is spot on and LaBrie really shows off his talent. If only they we're half as good as this these days, they dont play with the same pasison they used 2:(
I hate to break it to you guys, but I have read the Dream Theater Biography that came out a couple years ago, and they admitted that James' vocals were re-recorded for the Marquee album. I was disappointed to read that. However, this performance is AMAZING!! And it's obviously unedited. So I don't see why they needed to redo the vocals for the Marquee album. This was James at his prime.
James is really phenomenal in this. He is crisp and clear. Nothing seems to be impeding his vocal folds from vibrating against one another. However, my beef with him comes when he forces his range. If he doesn't land in the upper range particularly well, he'll force until it's loud enough and in tune. It's just a "breathe and release" kind of thing...not breathe and pinch and compress until it comes out thing.
This may well have been the single greatest day for James LaBrie's voice ever. And maybe the greatest day for human vocality in history after beginning to speak.
@Proghead26 Your are right!! James Is the man!! And yes He uses all fullvoice it's not chest voice cause that would be strained. Your full voice is still part of your speaking voice just felt in the head.
This may well be my favorite dream theater performance. My favorite JLB performance and JP is very tasteful but shows his technical ability (chord tapping at the end is cool). And everyone else rocks as usual.
No, you're right he still sounds good now. I got Black Clouds and Silver Linings and he goes surprisingly high especially on some of the cover songs. And can still do a lot of Images and Words. He's great now, all things considered and was PHENOMENAL back then.
People say he wasn't as clean later in the tours, I think the rest of the band wanted James to sing with more grit ON PURPOSE and so he did. The fact that Awake is sung a lot grittier supports my idea, I beleive. Gritty or not I LOVE James' voice from 92, 92, 92, 94.
Dear lord, his voice was powerful. o_O First time I've heard LaBrie sing this. I'm so used to Dominici when it comes to The Killing Hand, lol. Great stuff.
I think James' voice is much more expressive and the timbre of his voice is more emotional. There's a more of a screaming quality to James that makes it more intense than someone who can just sing high and make it sound light. Geoff Tate sounds like that to me. So does Steve Perry.
I can't believe how well James sang that song. I was impressed by his performance on the NYC 3/4/93 Official Bootleg, but this is even leagues better than that performance. Keep the epic vox coming!
I bought live at the marquee and I think I like this one a little better even though his high parts on marquee are higher. something about this is really organic. it is their "home town". maybe that's it.
@TheFacilidade Both James and Russel have their share of 'off' performances on video. And obviously it's not all about who can sing the highest note. I enjoy both.
It's really a shame how much his voice was shot and a lot of his range was lost due to the constant touring and his food poisoning incident. Just listen to his natural power here, and his ability to belt out the high notes... He sounds fucking great.
He's actually still amazing. It's a shame lots of people didn't realize that
agree, now he is a shadow of his voice
He sounds unbelievable. Just wow.
One of the best vocal performances caught on camera.
Awesome to see LaBrie hitting those high notes so clean and with such clarity. It doesn't matter how he is now, he has left his mark and it's videos like this that ensure he'll be remembered.
Definitely one of the GREATEST vocalists of all time
@@nickpaternostro2611 LaBrie at his peak what the best. He sounds un fucking believable.
@@nickpaternostro2611 no
@@brucethekingagree to disagree. He was incredible at one point.
This is definitely one of the things worth living for. James's voice is ethereal.
He hits those notes with such ease here, as if it's nothing... it's frightening what his voice could have been hadn't it been for the vocal injury.
I wonder how many people had their minds blown at this concert.
I love how James is aware how powerful his voice is. This is art and James' best act...
Ghost of Perdition His voice was, unfortunately... Still great though.
For at least one night, James Labrie had the best voice on the fucking planet.
the labrie voice at images and word is the best...
great!
There are so many 'wow' moments in this clip of James' voice. Incredible. Would have loved to have seen them live back then.
I am pretty sure they told him to start singing "grittier" somewhere around this point to sound more metal. That's why it sounds so much cleaner here, because he changed it on purpose (even though it ended up hurting his voice a lot, and then of course the accident).

5:52 wooooow wooow easy man wtf :o
cant believe :D
This has some amazing high notes. Sheesh man Labrie used to have some pipes. I mean he's pretty good now days, but this is unreal.
Labrie's singing was simpy incredible at this show...
The way he could sing like that while dancing about in that manner is really quite impressive.
i love JAMES LABRIE
LaBrie's voice just kills me in this one...
This must be the best DT concert ever. At least for James! Could listen to his vocals non stop
if Labrie doesn' t have the incident at his vocal strings in 1993, could it be the best singer ever.
the incident was just a finishing move. watch how he loses highs starting from 92 due to constant touring and pushing his limits.
It's not just the food poisoning, 30+ years of singing 2-3 hour shows in the super high style most DT songs demand will destroy anyone's voice.
Well, he goes higher than in any other recorded performance... but from 4:35 to 4:42... that's way lower than in Live at the Marquee, and that's probably his highest scream ever.
Amazing singer.

Love this song very much. Its a perfect blend of power and progressive metal. Hail the original with Dominici, this version is oh so awesome too.
WOW!!! The best i`ve ever heard James sing this, better than live at the Marquee. Long live DREAM THEATER.!!!!!!!!!!

James FUCKING Labrie. Absolutely not one single rock singer has those pipes.

Everybody talks about LaBrie in this video. I'm so happy for him. Wish people remember James LaBrie at his top.
Hi. Being a singer and listened a LOT of DT live videos from different eras, I must say, this show is the most impressive LaBrie's performance ever! Incredible song ... and at 8:45 James reaches literally stratospheric vocal levels.

There is! It's got James LaBrie on vocals. Just run a search 'winter rose james labrie'.
I'm pretty shure the marquee version has some overdubs here and there, but his voice was phenomenal those days
07:02 "I am the killing hand" then he looked at his hand. LOL

ahahaha apparently swinging his microphone around by the chord :D
John Myung and Eric Johnson have discovered the fountain of youth judging by the fact that they haven't aged since about age 26.
LaBrie really was very good
beautifull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Without a doubt this is the greatest Labrie performance I´ve ever seen
Destined for greatness

WOW. This sounds like an album recording. Just like everyone else, I wish all that bad stuff hadn't happened to his voice. James is amazing here.
Damn!
"THIS ONE CONTROLS!!"
LaBrie used to be better than Freddy Mercury!
Im not a huge James LaBrie fan but he sang this tune amazingly here.
@Proghead26 Your are right!! James Is the man!! And yes He uses all fullvoice it's not chest voice cause that would be strained. Your full voice is still part of your speaking voice just felt in the head.
If a genie gave me the best voice in the world for just one song - I'd use it to sing this one, just like james
Master Myung.
James LaBrie is a god! The best singer on the world!By a fan of James
Haha, I was a year out of high school here. I remember this place - Sundance. I lived about 30 mins from there. :-)
