Turned 77 last month. I grew up on beauty magazines always looking for hints to calm my oily teenager skin. I used a clay mask made by Dorothy Gray. My first lipstick came inside the fulcrum of a Coty compact. My favorite foundation was the water activated Max Factor Pan Cake which didn't add any creamy glow to my already oily skin. Beginning in the '70s I started going to Elizabeth Arden beauty classes held at a local department store. For $25, which went toward later purchases, you received a big box of EA products in trial sizes. It was a bargain. The Arden representatives would come around to each lady providing instructions and access to all products and color choices. I think I went every year until the store closed. Wonderful videos Laura.♿👵 Barb N.
When I met my husband, he was 26, just a few years older than me. I recall stepping into his apartment bathroom and he had Oil of Olay on his sink. Close to 30 years later, he still uses Oil of Olay and buys multiples so he never runs out. I tried to get our kids to moisturize, pointing out how their father looks younger than me now because of Oil of Olay! Thank you for this fun and informative video.
I use Estee Lauder and Dr. Erno Laszlo's products mentioned in the video. My grandma got me hooked on Estee Lauder. She wore Youth Dew and many cosmetics from Estee Lauder. This was a very glamorous era that I just love.
Hi Laura, I love the stylish, glamorous 50's ! I was born in the 50's,and my mother was so elegant with her red lipstick, and auburn hair. Women really took pride with their appearance. The cosmetic companies didn't scrimp with their packaging (pretty metal, gold ,"bullet" lipstick tubes, some with gems.Elegant designed pressed powder compacts). These days everything is minimalist....very unglamorous, but eco friendly. I miss the joy of purchasing a new cosmetic in a pretty container. Beauty salons had dividers between clients...now when getting your hair styled, you are front and center stage ! No privacy,no glamour ! Yes, the old days had it's problems, but it sure was a more stylish era ! People cared about their appearance. I used to have nightmares that I went to school in my pajamas, now grown adults shop in their pajamas, and students attend school in their pajamas ! We had a dress code when I went to school, and would be sent home if not followed. I just don't get it.... Could you do an episode on perfumes from the 50's that are no longer available ? I love the designs of old perfume bottles too ! Thank You ! Cindy
So true. People used to care about their appearance now there are so many Inwant to give them a bar of soap. Men also looked neat and put together. I was born in 1950 and remember as I was growing up my mother and her red lipstick also how she took such good care of us her children. Loved my ivory soap baths
Born in the 50's too, and love the 1910's -1960's products period too. I couldn't care less how people dress or wear makeup nowadays, but the graphics and history of cosmetics , perfumes and skincare 60 plus years ago are simply the best!
Lately, there are some companies that have come out with absolutely beautiful packaging-they even create very artistic designs with the makeup palettes themselves.
A vintage brand that many people don’t talk about is Merle Norman. It has modernized a lot but there are many beauty products that have remained the same since the 1950s. Its powder base foundation, cleansing cream, blush rouge cream, sheer face powder and mirocol mask are all original formulas.
💄History with great photos ( 1910's-1960's) are my favorite subjects for your videos. I usually watch these kind multiple times. Also, enjoy the history of them all, and the one's focusing on individual companies are always a really fantastic watch too. 🥰
I started using Pond’s Cold Cream after learning about it from your channel and Sage Lilleyman’s channel. I realized that I had seen it before but didn’t know the significance. I fell in love with it after massaging it into my face the first time. It makes my skin feel so soft and refreshed. I just have to make sure to take it off properly so it doesn’t make my skin greasy afterward. I just discovered Pond’s wipes as well and I love them.
Thank you so much for this channel. Currently I'm dealing with some health issues and I'm always looking forward to your videos. They always cheer me up! ❤ 50's culture was inspiring and beautiful
I love the look of vintage makeup and packaging. The stars on the Max Factor Creme Puff and the design on the Airspun powder is tasteful and gives a nice feel.
The 1950s was such an elegant era. I love the movies, fashion and music. It’s really interesting that when you did the videos of beauty products from the 70s, 80s and 90s I didn’t know most of them. I think there must have been a lot that were only available in America. But I still see all except 2 of the brands from this video and use several of them today; Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Revlon, Nivea and Clarins. 50s beauty must have been truly revolutionary and good quality for so much of it to still be thriving today. More so than any other era I think.
I love the green Pears’ translucent soap. It has such a nice, classic, subtle scent. It reminds me or the Elizabeth Arden Green Tea perfume. (But I would never dream of using it on my face.)
I just love Coty Airspun Powder!! It's so good. I love the scent too. I used Noxema in my teenage years. I have used it on sunburns. I haven't tried it on my feet. I love Estee Lauder skincare and perfumes.
I love your videos! I've been using Estee Lauder products for years. The majority of the women in my family also use it. My great-grandma, who was born in the 1920s, got us hooked on it. She always wore red lipstick and the perfume Beautiful. My mom also wears it.❤
Thank you for your amazing videos. They bring me joy. Not only do I learn the history of beauty products, but also relive my childhood in the 60's. My mom used ponds. I remember using bar soap for washing our hair. Zest was the brand we used. Now there are so many brands, I get overwhelmed.
Laura, I love how your face is always dewy. I love the blouse you're wearing, and I like the retro look of this video with the, how do you say, the "old film" look with the black vertical lines moving about. I use Noxema to this day, as it cleans and is moisturizing. I use Pond's dry skin moisturizer (blue cap) mainly because I have hard water, and the Pond's soothes my face. I love Nivea on my feet and elbows lol. I use to use that Coty airspun, in the 80s in highschool. I need to revisit that.
Love your videos Laura, so informative as well as nostalgic. I love my Olay lotion, Dove soap and Revlon lipsticks. Another soap I used to use was Camay, but don't know if they make it anymore. ❤️
I work with all the Estee Lauder brands! I've seen first hand the impact that her brands have had in the world. ❤ I've also worked with Avon, Mary Kay, Biotherm, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein! ❤
eliabeth arden merle norman i love!!!! Love the way Oil of Olay, Jergens, Camay, and Coty Air Spun smells!!!! Nostalgic and Lovely! My Aunt wore Revlon "Cherries In The Snow (I did too) and "Love That Red" beautifully!!!!
I still use Pond's Cold Cream and Oil of Olay beauty cream. Both my grandmother and mother used both as do I. The one thing my mother wore was Pancake makeup ( she didn't need it,) and it smelled. Glad that's gone!
I think the model doing the Clean and Clear commercial looks a lot like you, Laura. I still use Noxema every day and it's been one of my staples since I was a teen. The " Nivea Soft" formula is a good moisturizer, and I gave my friend a jar and she liked it too. Just a sidenote, Elvis used Neutrogena bar soap. This was a great video and I wish we still had Max Factor in the states.
The old style Oil of Olay was so, so awful for my skin. Every time I tried to use it, my face would burn and turn bright red. I guess this was pretty common, because they eventually came out with a lotion for sensitive skin and then other formations (which I can use, though I have other moisturisers I like better, including Nivea cream).
I love to incorporate generational beauty secrets into my own routine, especially with fragrances and makeup ! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for dropping such great content… New Subscriber!
If i just collected makeup and appreciated the packaging. I would of kept all the max factor, Avon , and Estée Lauder from back then. I always thought I would be able to buy max factor. I still love my Nivea no other lotion compares. I’m also gonna have to try noxzema for the feet.❤
Despite the fact that I do adore and love fashion icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn and love some of the cute fashion styles of the era, the 50s was also one of the most repressive eras ever!
I was thinking the very same & how far we’ve come but *still* have so much further to go🙁. Kinda sad. At least we can enjoy everything style-wise with less oppression.
Pears soap is still a makeup artist staple. Wet a spoolie and use it to set eyebrows, it’s wonderful and SO inexpensive!
I just like it as my second cleanse after removing the makeup with Ponds cold cream. ❤ 🤷♀️

Great story ❤
Oil of Olay is the best.
My late husband started using moisturizer when he was 40. He looked at least 10-15 years younger than his age.
I use Estee Lauder and Dr. Erno Laszlo's products mentioned in the video. My grandma got me hooked on Estee Lauder. She wore Youth Dew and many cosmetics from Estee Lauder. This was a very glamorous era that I just love.
Estee Lauder perfumes are my favorite. The one I wear the most is Pleasures. I want to try Youth Dew some time.
Estee Lauder is always giving away free stuff, free gift, etc.
I love Revlon lipsticks

Catkin and flower knows, have very pretty cosmetics.
You are delusional. 💀
My mom has that lipstick case from the ad in the beginning. It was hers in high school. Fun to see the ad.

One of my Grandmothers used Oil of Olay every night and claimed that was why her skin was so smooth and soft, and it actually was! lol, great video!
I love the look of the beauty products, especially avon products in the 50s and 60s. I wish the beauty products of today looked like that.
Growing up in the 1950s...toni perms, cashmere bouquet powder, bonne bell, and Adrienne Arpel ❤

I am re discovering Revlon ❤and I am loving it !
It's so good!
I love revlon vintage shades such as certainly red, cherries in the snow, love that red, fire and ice
I love the look of vintage makeup and packaging. The stars on the Max Factor Creme Puff and the design on the Airspun powder is tasteful and gives a nice feel.
The main ingredient in Eight-Hour Cream is the same as that of Vaseline. ❤
Yes! I’d love to visit a salon in the 50s too.
Me too haha
Amazing presentation! I love learning about the history of iconic cosmetic brands! All your videos are spectacular! ♥️🌹

Hey, just a fun fact (as you already mentioned actually). In my language (Romanian), we still call mascara as Rimmel 😊
Same in Spanish
I hear great things about Ponds Cold Cream. It is said to work well for dry sensitive skin
Cold creams are very old inventions. It was first formulated by famous ancient Roman physician Galen, so it was known as Galen's cream.
I stand by ponds, it's very hydrating and great during the winter!
Hi Laura I love watching your videos so interesting I also love vintage ❤
You’re my go-to for all things vintage beauty 💖
I always love your videos! ❤ Thank you for all the hard work and bringing us back to a glamorous time.
Thanks so much!!
Can you please do an entire video on the history of Avon
Yes! I’m working on it now
I wish we could still get Max Factor in the US
Me, too! I miss Pan Cake Foundation in Amber Rose. I have searched high and low; nothing comes close! 😢
ANd Canada!
Use some of products still but i just tried ponds just to see how it works and it works and feels like the expensive brands! Great video as always!❤
Love your videos Laura, so informative as well as nostalgic. I love my Olay lotion, Dove soap and Revlon lipsticks. Another soap I used to use was Camay, but don't know if they make it anymore. ❤️
They still sell it at rite aid

Just a wonderful video. Thank you Laura for your hard work in bringing us such a deep dive into our beauty products industry. ❤️❤️
Thanks so much

Hello this is LaTonya love when your videos come on love your Channel
Thank you so much 🤗
This is so cool 😎
I've just gotten really interested in the 50's👍🏻
The Buddy Holly story has really captures my attention
Oh yes that’s so interesting I need to watch the movie again
@@Laurajaneatelier I've been watching documentaries. Apparently the movie isn't very accurate. Going to get some books on him as well👍🏻
Another informational and well done video. Great information
I love your videos. i have used Estee Lauder for 30 years. I use Max Factor creme puff too.

Mine still burnt with so called sensitive.
It’s true! In Portuguese, mascara is “rimmel”
Comprehensive info!
Loved Helene Rubenstein. Did you know Natura bought Avon and the Body Shop. Body shop is a korean company. I loved the lipsticks. They are out now.
I love to incorporate generational beauty secrets into my own routine, especially with fragrances and makeup !

I'm curious about Ponds cold cream
Bergen’s lotion and face crème I still use today!!!
was Noxema around in the 50’s
Yes, Noxzema has been available since 1914; however, the formula changed slightly over the years. ❤
Oh my, I am laughing so much since here in Brazil we used/some people still do call mascara "rimmel"! I now know why!!!
I love Nivea
Its the only lotion I use. I love it! ❤️
Do they still sell dippity-doo,setting lotion for hair? 👩🎨
Dippity doo...wow I just had a flashback 😊
Yes, they still sell it! 😊
I remember Tweed, the perfume and shampoo.
Tweed was my grandmother’s favorite. ❤
If i just collected makeup and appreciated the packaging. I would of kept all the max factor, Avon , and Estée Lauder from back then. I always thought I would be able to buy max factor. I still love my Nivea no other lotion compares. I’m also gonna have to try noxzema for the feet.❤
LMAO, I use Nivea cream all over, including for my feet!
Loved it 😮😅😊❤
Your amazing ❤❤❤❤
Wow that is so cool
And you can still find most of it today.
Olay has come along way and so has ponds
Yay!
❤❤
Where is Helena Rubinstein currently sold ?
Their skin looks blue on Lazlo section.

Many housewives didnt even have a tv
What does this have to do with this video?
Such a tragedy! Imagine talking to your spouse, kids, neighbors, friends. Life without TV how did we live without it? I say quite easily.
