Possibly one of the most underrated games ever. My whole family loves this game. Even my father who doesn't like video games. It never gets boring. Plum, Harry, Bowser, and Maple were my favorites.
I loved the music in this game as a kid and I still do to this day. Harmonic, chill, and just gets you in a good mood. My dad kinda hated this game because he generally doesn't like the n64 controller and a shot's accuracy can be tough to determine in this game for a lot of people, but it's still enjoyable to me.
Just started collecting for the n64 again as most of my collection was stolen :( your reviews are helping me pick and choose the best titles I need to play! Loving your channel, your definitely the best n64 reviewer i've come across. The explanations of the games and they're features are so in depth and done with a laid back and knowledgeable finesse. Please keep making amazing content especially your LOZ: OFT review it was heartfelt af. Nearly brought a tear to my eye honestly.
One of the reasons which made me like much more this game, was the fact that the Music composer is Motoi Sakuraba; who composed the soundtrack of Valkyrie Profile, Golden Sun and Star Ocean.
I just discovered your channel today, and I got to say it's awesome. Brings back so much nostalgia and awesome memories from my childhood. Thanks Glenn, top content mate.
Also, this is your 200th N64 game review. I counted on your channel. Congratulations on the milestone. Only 180 or so more to go before you talk about every single one of them. ;)
Lest we forget: this was compatible with the Transfer Pak, just like Mario Tennis, which just like this game had a Game Boy namesake, but was more an RPG in which you could develop your character to be used on the N64 games. Awesome concept!
2:28 - A "stroke" of pure genius, eh? Personally, I like the transfer pak feature but I wish you could save the characters to the N64 cart instead of having to transfer everytime!
Very nice review, I had lots of fun playing mario golf when I had my n64 and one thing for sure...this game didn't hold your hand! no sir it was brutal but ironically that made it fun and satisfying.
the nostalgia of your videos make me want to cry... tears of joy. I think you do great commentary each game gets a fair and honest review, not just ripping into everything that is wrong with them.
Mario Golf Switch is my favourite, playing with the joy cons or buttons was the best and that hd rumble that made it feel like you were really hitting those balls. Amazing!
Another great video Glenn. Just wondering, do you use S video cables through an HDMI upscaling box? I've just got a Japanese N64 with an everdrive 64 but my video quality is pretty average on my monitor.
If you look at the title of the video, any one which says ultra hdmi means I’ve used an ultra HDMI chipped n64 console. If it just says hd then I used svideo
Haaa! This game was so awesome, despite it being a random cartridge that showed up and stayed at my sisters for a few months before disappearing. It was fun, and even more fun playing with friends.
Hey Glenn Plant, greetings again from Ecuador! i like very much that you have time to answer almost every comment! keep this good job! I´m glad that a channel like this exists in youtube ;)
Hey Glenn! Can't tell you how much I love this game! Played many many hours of it since it came out. Just recently 100%'d actually; some of those ring shots are tough!
I've only recently found your N64 reviews but damn, even on some games I never bat an eye to, you really go in depth in the review. I'll keep watching!
I've been replaying this game lately and it's still such a solid golf game. I always remember constantly spamming the taunts during multiplayer when my dad was trying to concentrate 🤣🤣
The Camelot Mario Sports titles were always some of the best out there, at the time. I've got a lot of fond memories of playing this and Mario Tennis for hours on end with friends.
I dug this up recently after getting addicted to Toadstool Tour on the GameCube and wanting more golf (and I guess to answer the question in the video, Toadstool Tour is my favorite Mario sports title). I got an N64 second-hand years ago with Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, and until this year I had never touched either of them, as other games like Banjo-Kazooie attracted me more. However, finally visiting this game I had a lot of fun with it. It's way harder to learn than Toadstool Tour as it gives you less information about how your shot will play out, and you sometimes have to do a lot of math in your head to account for distance lost from landing in a hazard or rain/wind, which isn't always fun. However, it's very satisfying to master the game once you learn how it works, and while I don't think it's nearly as good as Toadstool Tour due to having less content, less interesting courses and more rudimentary physics, it's still Mario Golf, and Mario Golf is just one of the most inexplicably deep, addictive and relaxing formulas of gameplay I've had the pleasure of experiencing in my lifetime. These games also have some of the most underrated OSTs in Nintendo's library, striking a perfect balance between peppy and soothing. Fun fact: the composer of these two games also made the music for Dark Souls.
4:25 - I always liked the mini golf mode but, I agree it's a bit bland. The most exciting stuff is a pond you can skip across and a couple "jumps" that are shortcuts. I think a mini-golf game like you described would warrant it's own cartridge. I would've bought it!
I wanted to get this one for the Mario and Donkey Kong Retrospective I was doing on my blog. Sadly I was unable to get my hands on it. Probably will get anyway at some point.
I still play this game every now and then on the emulator. You can give the game boy color characters 400yd power that hit straight and at a low altitude so the wind doesn't mess up shot
I've been waiting for this review for so long! Great job as always Glenn 👍 One of my favourite games on the N64. Took me several goes to unlock Wario he was a pain in the ass to beat because of his driving and putting was ridiculous but trying to beat Harry is even worse -_- Favourite Mario Sports title would probably be Mario Kart Wii, great graphics, good challenge to unlock all characters and vehicles and no microtransactions! But equally Mario Kart 64 is amazing in its own right, along with Mario Strikers Charged Football, I played that game to death to unlock everything and playing online was really fun and competetive.
Mario gold 64 my dad and I bonded over this game when I was in high school and played it all the time really brought us together and the first game he ever really played it was a gateway drug for him but it was and is the best one and the best time we had.
Fantastic multiplayer game. Had a lot of fun with this playing with a friend. I like how they didn't dumb down the physics, making it very satisfying to play. Only complaint I have is that they included some generic characters that feel completely out of place.
Great vid as usual.Would have to go with the Gamecubes Mario Strikers as its best sports title. But the best golf game of all is Neo Turf Masters, an absolute must play.
My favorite Mario sports title? The subject of this review, mate. 'Mario Golf' is one of those rare pieces of gaming magic that always brings a smile to my face whenever I turn it on. Whatever few complaints you have with 'Mario Golf' are the same ones I have with this game. The mini golf mode, while quaint, really didn't serve as much more than putting practice. Still, 'Mario Golf' a great title; I love the atmosphere, the music (especially Speed Golf's frenzied tempo), and, as alluded to earlier, the childlike joy I get from the entire package
Maybe it’s because I grew up with Toadstool Tour more, but playing Mario Golf 64 was a struggle for me. It’s a good game but also really difficult. There was no indicator to where flag is located when Putting and that tricks me off the most. Not only this, but Mario Golf GBC and Hot Shots Golf 1&2 had a similar problem. That’s why I tell everyone who are interested in these games to not play the older Mario Golf and Hot Shots Golf games until they get an understanding of the later games first. I just think the later games in both series are much better in each installment, mechanically.
There IS an indicator of the flag. It's up there. You can select the map to see where the flag is before hitting the ball. So stop using excuses. You're bad at the game
Mau Pr I mean an indicator on the shot meter. And stop with the “You’re just bad at the game.” Nonsense, cause this game is pretty difficult for newcomers.
Never owned Mario Sports titles when N64 was around, but I did have Toadstool Tour and became quite good at it, managing Hole in Ones and Albatrosses. (And I loved that you could save your replays as well). I did however buy these games on the Wii's VC and found them pretty ok for their time, especially Mario Tennis 64 which I still like the most even to this day.
I actually enjoyed the mini golf mode and wished they added it to Toadstool Tour, as well. I do agree there could have been more creativity behind it, but it was always really nice to be able to switch to a more relaxed game mode after playing some of the tougher challenges in the game.
To add to the excellent random realism of the game, it was so difficult to get a hole in one. In all my years of playing I never got one until a friend came over, who'd never played the game and he flukely got one! Much to my annoyance, his replay is still saved on my Mario Golf cartridge.
Can't remember the name of the game, but I do know it is on the DS. The 3 on 3 basketball game is my favorite! It was a fun mixture of mario characters and final fantasy characters for some reason lol
I remember my friend in Junior High saying he wanted to get Mario Golf and I still remember to this day when I told him, "if you EVER say some stupid shit like that around me again I'll never stop hitting you". Who knew it was a good game, feel a little bad now
I always did find it ironic that this was the same company that made the famous Shining series games on Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn (Back when they were known as Sonic Software Planning), it goes to show that even when faced with something completely new and unknown/different, they stood up to the challenge and passed with flying colors. A round of applause for Camelot, I say. As for favorite Mario Sports games, my pick is very obscure to a lot, but I choose Mario's Tennis for Virtual Boy. Not perfect by far, but it was very fun in its own right and I find it a shame that it never got a larger spotlight since then.
My issue with this game, is how hard it is to land a good shot. It doesn't give you a proper grid to help you understand how you should take your shot. You just have to pray you got it right.
I love Mario Golf on the N64 and the Gameboy Color. I loved how simple the games were and how devilishly difficult they could be. I also loved the RPG stuff in the Gameboy version and making my own character. I could never get into the later versions though. I have the Gamecube version and I hated how they changed the way the game played. The auto mode they added was lame and if I wanted to use the old manual shot, I had to use the B button instead of just pressing A. Having to switch between the A button and B button ruins the rhythm in my opinion. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it was to me since I pretty much had to re-learn how to play the game after becoming really good at it on the N64 and Gameboy.
@@timmer919hep I agree that Mario Golf 64 is better than the GC sequel. I put the game in the S tier for N64 titles. The music is so nostalgic that I almost want to cry because it reminds me of when I played this as a kid.
Golf has always been a tough sell for me. I've tried a variety of them, but once I get used to the controls I get bored with them. Yet to try this one, though I do have the GC version in my collection somewhere.
As far as the comment topic of conversation, 'favorite Mario sports tittle on any system,' I sway between Mario Golf Advance Tour, for its more RPG-feel, and Mario Golf World Tour (3ds) because of its interesting online multiplayer system. I actually can't imagine many ways to improve on the 3ds one, but sometimes I'm just more in the mood for Advance Tour's 'Golden Sun' feel.
Yo so........ when are you going to review Super Mario 64?!? From the looks of it, it would appear that the very first ever N64 game ever released is going to be the very last game ever covered on this channel.
Good visual fidelity on that Nintendo 64 you have, Glenn! However, if you have a GameShark or a cheat device, I think you can also disable the default blur filter that the Nintendo 64 uses.
I have golf on every system from Atari to Xbox. And Fred couples golf links, on genesis is the most casual and smooth. Pebble beach dude. Like all others the putting will make your hair gray. Just don't get a putter mixed up with a 4 iron. You go from eagle to 13 over par. And smash your controller.
Great review as always!I never reallt enjoyed golf games, this one is the only exception. A fun game that needed time to be fully mastered. Now, what about reviewing harvest moon and indiana jones?
I think Mario Kart 64 is probably one of my favourite Mario sports games. Racing is a sport, right? Geneerally speaking, I've never been a fan of sports games. They all seem to play the same way to me; or at least those which simulate the same sport. I also typically find sports games to be rather lacking in exciting events. Mario Kart is the exception though, because it is nothing like a racer which tries to be realistic.
As far as I am aware even if you could hack in the other four characters. It takes your status of them in the Gameboy game, much like with Pokemon Stadium. So you don't gain or lose anything over all, but yeah. You really would need the gameboy game, or be a very skilled hacker, as I assume the character animations are in there, but you'd need to code in a name (maybe), and in all the stats. Which may not seem hard at face value, but if I know anything from Camelot, it has a deeper system then it looks.
yes i believe someone else below posted something similar in the fact its always pulled from the gb cart and nothing is local to the cart for those characters
I think it's about time Nintendo made some more original Mario sports IP's, because nowadays all we seem to be getting is rehashes for Mario Tennis and Mario at the Olympics. Despite that I absolutely LOVE Mario Golf
Compared to Mario Cart and Mario Adventure the graphics are horrible, grainy and blocky, also it does not have a easy mode that makes it easy to hit the ball without it hooking or slicing that the Gamecube has..It's annoying how you have to unlock what should be standard characters like Adult Mario who is available in the Gamecube Mario Golf.
When I played this again on UltraHDMI it made me sell my Ultra HDMI, I couldn't get over the golfball being a perfect square. How did I get used to this as a child? The CRT must have made this stuff look way better. I appreciate my SNES/NES HDMI mods vs. N64. Upscaled 240p 3D doesn't work very well for me vs. 2D.
I’ve got no clue what you’re talking about. I have an ultra hdmi and play it on a 4K TV at 720, de-blur off, simple scanlines and it looks great. The graphics are always going to look slightly muggy on n64 games because that’s just how it is. It’s part of the charm and I love it
Possibly one of the most underrated games ever. My whole family loves this game. Even my father who doesn't like video games. It never gets boring. Plum, Harry, Bowser, and Maple were my favorites.
Oh my god. Me and my friend still play this all the time. Amazing game!
glad its still being played all these years later!

indeed it is! well not including the japanese games I've reviewed also :) good spot there i hadn't even noticed
No... I counted your J games as well. This is your 200th review of an officially released game.
17 japanese eye episodes and 200 western releases reviewed ...i checked how many videos are in each playlist :)
But some of your reviews are of mods or unreleased games like 40 Winks and Frogger among other things. So not counting those, then it's 200.
Lest we forget: this was compatible with the Transfer Pak, just like Mario Tennis, which just like this game had a Game Boy namesake, but was more an RPG in which you could develop your character to be used on the N64 games. Awesome concept!
This is my favorite Mario Sports title. I spent hundreds of hours on this and the GBC installment. Still play it occasionally today.
have you managed to unlock everything?

The Camelot Mario Sports titles were always some of the best out there, at the time. I've got a lot of fond memories of playing this and Mario Tennis for hours on end with friends.

It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it was to me since I pretty much had to re-learn how to play the game after becoming really good at it on the N64 and Gameboy.
thats odd because from reading everyones comments here most people seemed to prefer the GC sequels!
I know. I've tried the Gamecube version, the Gameboy Advance version
and even the 3DS version. Nothing feels like the original to me.
@@timmer919hep I agree that Mario Golf 64 is better than the GC sequel. I put the game in the S tier for N64 titles.
The music is so nostalgic that I almost want to cry because it reminds me of when I played this as a kid.
i really loved that game when i was a teenager
still fun to this day
Just bought this. Looking forward to it :)
Hope you enjoy it!
love the reviews m8
thank you
Golf has always been a tough sell for me. I've tried a variety of them, but once I get used to the controls I get bored with them. Yet to try this one, though I do have the GC version in my collection somewhere.
i think for many this is one of the more approachable golf games as they can tend to be seriously hard to get into
As far as the comment topic of conversation, 'favorite Mario sports tittle on any system,' I sway between Mario Golf Advance Tour, for its more RPG-feel, and Mario Golf World Tour (3ds) because of its interesting online multiplayer system. I actually can't imagine many ways to improve on the 3ds one, but sometimes I'm just more in the mood for Advance Tour's 'Golden Sun' feel.
Yo so........ when are you going to review Super Mario 64?!? From the looks of it, it would appear that the very first ever N64 game ever released is going to be the very last game ever covered on this channel.
someday...but it won't be the last game i review
Good visual fidelity on that Nintendo 64 you have, Glenn! However, if you have a GameShark or a cheat device, I think you can also disable the default blur filter that the Nintendo 64 uses.
+Foodperson Longplays the ultra hdmi can clear that up too :-) a much easier solution than using a cheat device although it's somewhat more expensive!
No, I mean there is still an additional blur filter that is programmed in each game in code. There is a way to disable that instruction
Always good to hear from
Someone who’s a golf fan who can add their insight!
Probably Mario Strikers, the mayhem is real on that one!
indeed it is!
Its a tie between this and tennis, Camalot really nailed those 2 and made them even better on game cube
i really must check out the GC games once more
Glad your back :)) Can u review Rocket Robot On Wheels please ?
i will do soon, this year id imagine
Yay!!!!! Thanks :)
Great review as always!I never reallt enjoyed golf games, this one is the only exception. A fun game that needed time to be fully mastered.
Now, what about reviewing harvest moon and indiana jones?
+Fils de Bits they have already been reviewed?
Okay, my bad, you've been out of the game for so long that I did forgot :) Well, review it one more time ! ;)
+Fils de Bits hah maybe with the ultra hdmi mod!
Mario Kart is the exception though, because it is nothing like a racer which tries to be realistic.
personally id class that as more of a racer but its certainly a slit decision on that hah
Loved this game
Because if this game I took up a liking to real life golf
I think it's about time Nintendo made some more original Mario sports IP's, because nowadays all we seem to be getting is rehashes for Mario Tennis and Mario at the Olympics. Despite that I absolutely LOVE Mario Golf
+Pattilord23 eek I really hated the MARIO / sonic Olympic titles
Looks a lot like Hot Shot's Golf (Everybody's Golf in Japan) series but with Mario characters.
I liked HSG! 🙏🏼
Because it is.
Camelot made hot shots golf
My fave Mario sports title remains MK 64. But, this one is a great title as well.
+Mark McDaniel good pic!
Why don't you meet me out on the green sometime and we'll settle this once and for all.
Have you had a chance to playCyberTiger?
indeed i have...certainly a more unique take on golf
Which do you think is better?
Mario Golf or Mario Tennis?
Ohhhh I’d say golf but that’s just my preference
I eat pieces of 💩 like you for breakfast! 😂
0:47 How does Mario's head not explode when he sees his child self?
Compared to Mario Cart and Mario Adventure the graphics are horrible, grainy and blocky, also it does not have a easy mode that makes it easy to hit the ball without it hooking or slicing that the Gamecube has..It's annoying how you have to unlock what should be standard characters like Adult Mario who is available in the Gamecube Mario Golf.
This is how a Mario golf game should be done.
Mario Power Tennis is the greatest Mario sports game on any system!!!
Diggit!
I put so many hours into this game as a child
great game and great video!
thanks Jorge
Mario Tennis on GBA... the RPG mode!!!
ill have to look into that! sounds cool
It’s part of the charm and I love it
Mario golf is great but Toadstool Tour was the better game. By contrast, the original Mario Tennis is the best in that series.
