In this largely fictionalized film, agent Melvin Purvis is placed in charge of running down notorious killer Machine Gun Kelly and sets out to do just that. The film script is loosely based on Kelly's actual 1933 kidnapping of an Oklahoma petroleum executive, but the names and locations are changed. However, the film does accurately depict Kelly as a weak man who is dominated by his ambitious wife.
Melvin Purvis: G-Man is a 1974 American TV movie about Melvin Purvis. It is a spin-off of Dillinger (directed by John Milius, co-author of the teleplay for this movie) and was followed in 1975 by The Kansas City Massacre, also directed by Dan Curtis and starring Dale Robertson as Purvis.

Thank you for uploading this movie. I was about 17 when this movie was filmed in the farming area where I lived. I recognize so many places in the movie. The bridge that the car drove off was the one my school bus took on the way to school. There were about 50 of us local people on the opposite river bank watching as the scene was filmed. They let us cross the bridge to get to the point from which to view the crash, but then wouldn't let us go back across the bridge to go home. I had to ride my bike about an additional 6 miles to get to the next bridge to cross the river.

Where was that bridge located? I would like to visit that area. Thank you.

Buckwheat's Pa was my Uncle Bob, my dad's brother. He played the banjo throughout the movie.

Thanks for this. I remember there were two or three of these fun TV movies when I was a kid, as well as The Manhunter TV series with Ron Howard. I'd love to see the pilot film for that again.

John Milus wrote this. But he quickly fell out with the producers over edits, script changes and pay. At one point, this was going to be a pilot for a TV show starring Ben Johnson as Purvis. But the deal fell through.
This is the second in the American International "gangster" trilogy:
    - Dillinger
    - Melvin Purvis G-Man
    - The Kansas City Massacre
The first was for theaters. The second and third were TV movies.

This is a Great movie, but i Can't Believe they Used Some of the Same actors in this movie that they made a year later in 1975's Kansas City Massacre, but back then i guess they figured the viewing public Wouldn't know the difference.😊

I remember watching this when it first aired. At that time the only actor I recognized was the 2nd Darren from "Betwitched".

i feel bad for Thatcher at the end. kate brought him lunch when he was held captive, he was trying to return the favor, but she dont even think of this just start throwing tantrum bout how rich ppl ruined her life when rly he never did anything to her she was the one who kidnapped him at gunpoint stole money and car from his family and destroyed their house. and he still dont hold a grudge yet she holds one against him. these movies are rly good, shows how rough and scary crime was in gangland times
