@@igoryudnikov6198 it's a useful information, I use some APSC lenses in full frame mode and shooting without camera corrections, so the lens covers nearly all the full frame, then you need to correct manually the image or create a profile to correct the lens

@@kaleff75 this is not true, you can choose full frame mode. Sony doesn't force APS-C mode. As the video shows, you get a full frame image at 70mm and at 350mm you get a small amount of black edges but you can still crop to a much bigger square image than APS-C
@@kaleff75 you don't get any closer, it's just a crop of the full frame image, so you can get the same result by cropping in postprocessing, but with more flexibility for a wider view especially vertically. Your fingers literally don't have space at the grip on an A7iii. Plus it doesn't have a tripod mount which is a glaring oversight for a lens of that weight. I'm returning it and may get the 70-350
@@kaleff75 Just stop it with the ignorance. The 70 to 350 covers the full frame sensor easily up to 120 mm and can even realistically go up to 200 if you can accept some slight vignetting. That means if you want a wide end you can be in full frame mode for the 70 mm shots. Or you can use apsc crop mode to go all the way to 525 mm. That is an insane focal range being covered by one lens. It is sharper than the 70 to 300 assuming you get a good copy as there are sample variations with both. Better macro too because a .23 magnification ratio in apsc is like .35 in full frame terms. It is also 200 grams lighter than the 70 to 300 which is a significant difference.

I switched from Canon gear and I was shooting on a 7D Mark-2 and a 6D Mark-2. As part of my lens lineup, I owned a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS ii lens and loved it. However, I didn't use it all that much because of the weight and size! Unless I was planning to shoot planes or wildlife, I would generally leave it home because it was too heavy to carry. When I switched to Sony, I decided not to purchase the 100-400mm or 200-600mm Sony lens because I was sure that I would not get enough use out of either lens. However, the 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS lens is reasonably light so I purchased one. My A6400 and this lens weighs less than half of what the 7D2 and 100-400mm lens weighed. Sure, I can only use this lens on a crop sensor camera but, I never used the Canon telephoto on my full frame Canon body. I always used it on the 7D2. The image quality and autofocus capability is very good to excellent and I am quite happy with this lens...
Sony even has a barrel for that in their SEL70300G. Would be great if they made closer focusing (1m or less) 70-350mm f/4.0-5.6 aps-c with that barrel.

You mean more affordable alternatives? Tamron has some APS-C zoom lenses although it starts wider. Like the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DI III-A VC VXD but it's image quality is not that good as this Sony, and the price difference is very small. Christopher has a review for it. You can check it. I was considering the Tamron, but I decided to go with the Sony after seeing this review and realizing the image quality.
I use this lens on my A7R4 in APS-C mode, this provides 30MP, so 525mm at f6.3 with 30MP makes this a good value, light and realistically inexpensive lens.
Although the field of view of a 350mm APSC lens is equal to that of a 525mm full frame lens, it is totally not fair to say this is giving identical results to a 525mm F6.3 full frame lens (if such a thing existed). But it is very nice anyway and if you don't use the telephoto lens a lot, having this in the bag instead of a full frame 100-400mm at double the weight, can make sense.
Hi Christofer! Congratulations for your impressive lens reviews: I found them really useful, as well as interesting. I'd like to ask, if you could review the Sony SEL18-200mm OSS. Thank you very much in advance!

@@christopherfrost Thanks, Chris! The local Camera Company had both in stock and I was able to try both out. Both exceeded my expectations for build quality and basic functions. I was surprised to find the Sigma focused better than expected and was more or less equal to the Sony. This lens has me torn...I was getting ready to grab an 80-400 Nikkor, but I also shoot with my A6000 and saw this and now I can't decide which one I want. I got the A6000 mostly for a walk around camera, with my D7100 being my main and most of my glass is Nikon. I only have the 2 kit lenses that came with the A6000, and the 210mm is decent for limited birding, but I want that extra reach. Kind of trying to avoid going down the rabbit hole of lens collections for two brands, but this lens is tempting me to make the full switch to Sony.
Yes you can (my 2nd camera). On travelling the A6000 gets the ony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS for very long telephoto . Works also well on A7RIV (my 1st camera).
Christopher...Howdy! Would you consider it more useful to look at sharpness at the rule of thirds point of intesection rather than the corners...we typically will either be in the middle or the intersection of the rule of thirds
But you need to keep in mind that because of the crop factor this lens wont be the same as the 100-400. APS-C is a nice platform but you're better of with your A7iii if I just take a look at the body and functions, I mean there is only IBIS in the A6500 and A6600 for example :'(.

Hi, thank you for the review. I am considering this lens for a trip on a sony A7mkII. Interesting point for meeting : light, almost FF to 200mm, but longer zoom if I rely on crop mode. But with a 24MP sensor, what is the end resolution of cropped images? Do you think it is an OK lens? Can you give me some sample picture at 200 an 300 and 350mm both crop and FF?
It is not really related. The size of the covering circle is related to the lens back elements, the vignette is from front elements vs aperture. Typically when the lens is optimized for FF then you have less vignette in APSC, but… this lens is designed for APSC ;).
Thought this was the lens for my a6400 but unfortunate not. My example had some strange behavior, which I am not alone to see from reading others opinion. Short distance was brilliant, sharp and contrast. But subjects further away than 50 meters turned up soft and really lacking in contrast, just some shady thing over the image just like the af wasnt really confident. Manual focus it often turned out better. I also found that over 300mm I had to stop down the lens to f11 to get ok results. Even comparing to my old Nikon 70-300 VR its results are poor. Probably ended up with a bad sample of the lens, so it went back to the store. Unfortunatly.
Bought it and returned it. I was much happier with the image quality from my adapted Canon 70-200 f4 iii. I should have know from the begining that that was a superior lens.
@@christopherfrost indeed, where will it go from 70 MP though, they're already trying to squeeze 100MP in some phones now. Not that they have any quality glass to match that in such a tiny sensor anyway.

Im thinking about sigma 100-400 lens.
But it is very nice anyway and if you don't use the telephoto lens a lot, having this in the bag instead of a full frame 100-400mm at double the weight, can make sense.
i have the sigma 70-200 2.8, which is amazing. however, i want some extra reach. 70-350 sounds epic and i'm glad it's sharp!
Hi Christofer! Congratulations for your impressive lens reviews: I found them really useful, as well as interesting. I'd like to ask, if you could review the Sony SEL18-200mm OSS. Thank you very much in advance!

Love the tests here! How does it compare with Tamron 18-300 lens?
70-350 or 70-300FE wich is best value for aps-c?

Anyone, especially Chris, have an opinion on whether they'd choose this lens (Sony E 70 - 350 f/4.5-6.3) or the new Sigma 100- 400mm f/5 - f/6.3? They about the same price. It would be used on a A6500 or other Sony crop sensor camera. Mostly interested in how the focusing compares. Thanks.
If I owned a Full Frame camera I'd get the Sigma without any question. If I owned APS-C then I'd probably go with the Sony unless I needed as much telephoto reach as possible
@@christopherfrost Thanks, Chris! The local Camera Company had both in stock and I was able to try both out. Both exceeded my expectations for build quality and basic functions. I was surprised to find the Sigma focused better than expected and was more or less equal to the Sony. With it's slightly smaller maximum aperture it seemed a bit darker through the viewfinder but not significantly. It is larger and heavier. Since I will be using it on a APS-C body the Sony felt a lot more balanced and it matched nicely with my Sony 16-55. Which I also purchased after watching your review of it. Thanks for all your good work...it is great appreciated.
@@ralphrusso9325 Which one do you recommend? sigma 100-400 or Sony 70-350? please advise
Hopefully you see this or anyone who does photography sees this and responds any information is greatly appreciated what is the difference between this and the Sony - FE 24-240mm because the Fe is a little more money but the mm amount that the sony e reaches is closer
Hi chris firstly great vid.. secondly hope you may be able help me out..
So i ve just got this lens and put it on my a5000 when i tryed to use the zoom bottom on the camera is tells me this funtion isnt avaliable in raw .. ?
So is basically a manual zoom lens .. i was under the presumption this lens would work with the zoom button ..
My understanding being new to photography could be wong tho .. could you clarify this for me ..
Is the zooming done the exclusively manual with the zoom rings or have i got an issue with my camera or lense .
When i put it in j peg in body zoom worked but the actual lems didnt physically move ..
Ware as my kit lens 16 too 55 moves when i use rhe zoom switch so am a little confused hear.
Hope someone can help me out hear ..many thanks for your informative vidoes by the way
Did chris change all of the thumbnails on his vid? Impressive
No all of them yes, but yes, I'm trying to re-brand the channel to look a bit more professional and a bit less rinky-dink hehe :-)
@@christopherfrost good for you 👍
Fantastic review, thank you.
Got this lens for under 500€ new - such a great lens ! :0
How's this compared to the FE 70-300mm on APS-C?
It is better in every aspect.
John W /the APSC 70-350mm is much superior then the Full Frame 70-300mm ( As per other specialist test, easy to find on internet.)
Great review as always. How is it compared to Canon's 55-250?
Wait, what did you say in the very first seconds?? chemown pelp???
Shwmae pawb! It's Welsh for "hello everyone". A bit different from the normal "croeso" or "borra da".
Whoever makes this lens an f2.8 while maintaining other factors will win the Nobel prize.

No, definitely not, but get rich selling it at a bit more. Except if it sucks at 2.8n gets good at 5.6
Im wondering if you crop photos at around 180mm length how much you will need to crop in post for the photo to be usable on a full frame sony camera compared to 70mm? many thanks
This one or the Sigma 100-400mm for my APSC?
My today choice is sony
@@lomzynskie_opowiesci okay I've bought the Sony now, too. I am very glad I did. Holy mother is this lens good.
@@lomzynskie_opowiesci why is that? I want to add a tele lens to my a7iii and was thinking of sony 70-350 apsc or sigma 100 400
@@derTommy do you think this Sony 70-350 is better than sigma 100-400. I'm also wondering to buy and can't decide. Cheers
@@doer6002 The Sigma is much bigger and much more heavy. And you need a lot of light for the Sigma. The autofocus of the sigma is slower than the one of the Sony what is bad for shooting fast moving objects. I hope this helps.
Hi Chris, does tamron $499 sp 70-300 di VC usd is equal to or better than $900 Sony 70-350 in image quality and image stabilisation, which you reviewed some year's before.
The Sony should be much, much better
Christopher Frost Photography your time are precious thanks for the reply.
Very helpful review.
So glad I didn't buy this one the past holiday sales. Very helpful vid
Never heard of a A5100
Love this video, but Sony user Review always makes videos, where are the image examples? we can't check your video, give us the link, thank you
If I use the lenz 70-350 on crop [sonyZv 10) . Is it be native 70-350 or in equivalent ? 105- 525 ? How ?
That Rock looks like Godzilla! 😳
Hi Sir Plz Recommend me a good Full frame camera around 1000$ usd! Plz
I own this lens and it is brilliant sharp as a tack
thanks for nice review. looks like great lens. thanks sony for the lens. it is inexpensive way to do birds photography. I think am gonna start save money for it.
I'm tossing up between this and the sigma 100-400mm lens.
For wildlife photography.
which one did you buy? Im also just wondering which is the better lens. sigma or Sony
I would get this one. If you have aps-c. No brainer imo.
@@doer6002 I never saw this! I Cant even remember. I ended up switching brands. But kinda wish I stuck with Sony.
@@BrianHallmond i bought 70-350, light weight and amazing
I have this on my A7RIV, 26 mpix in crop mode :)
wow :) how does it work crop mode? Do you know if even on a7r2 and a7r3 the crop part cover the entire evf in that mode for a better view?
@@nerdMike Yes it does with my A7RIV so it must be the same on those cams. If you mount a apsc lens, then it automatically choose crop mode.
@@SuperDigitalMe but the crop cover the entire frame on r2 and t3? Iirc on A7 iii doesn't work and you don't see the cropped frame full-screen. Maybe I'm wrong. 👍🏻
I have a a6300 & a7iii and agonized for ages between this an the FE 200-600. Not just because of cost but the huge difference in weight and size; which makes a big difference for landscape photography. In the end I went the more expensive FE route. Only time will tell....... was rather hoping you would trash the lens lol
Well done Christopher nice. I like your reviews. You r the best for lens reviews. Can u plss review fujifilm 18-135mm lens?
One day, yes :-)
Anyone know if this would work any good on a A7 iii?
In this review I talk quite a bit about how it performs on a full-frame camera
Hi Chris, have you compared side by side image quality of the a5100 vs the a7r2 in crop? I had the r2 and now the r3, and oftenly i found that the lack of the AA filter on the a7r's lets the lens iq shine more (if its good enough...), im specially interested in buying this lens for both crop and fullframe bodies, any comment would be greatly appreciated, thank you
Wish there was a 32MP+ APSC sensor from Sony so that we could skip the 100-400mm lens for wildlife shooters.
Does anyone's 70-350mm zoom ring feel slightly bumpy? As if the rubber wasn't glued down all the way...
Looks like we can use this lens as 70-200 on full frame for video mode without major issue.
Is it any good for my a7 miii?
Sure, why not
This lens has me torn...I was getting ready to grab an 80-400 Nikkor, but I also shoot with my A6000 and saw this and now I can't decide which one I want. I got the A6000 mostly for a walk around camera, with my D7100 being my main and most of my glass is Nikon. I only have the 2 kit lenses that came with the A6000, and the 210mm is decent for limited birding, but I want that extra reach. Kind of trying to avoid going down the rabbit hole of lens collections for two brands, but this lens is tempting me to make the full switch to Sony.
purchase a6400 + this one = perfect budget birding combo
Thank you for the detailed review! Can I ask you how does the sharpness looks like in the centre on a fullframe body?
Great
@@christopherfrost thanks for your prompt response! Highly appreciated:)
Nice video!!!
at what focal length does it switch to a maximum aperture of f/6.3 ?
According to Camera Labs, at 200mm. I was surprised when at 4:27 @Christopher Frost Photography was able to shoot at f/5.6.
Would you guys recomendable this lens on a a7ii ?
It should be okay - quite sharp
How is your image quality on your Sony A7Rii Christ?

CHRISTOPHER, my question is:
Can I use the 70 - 350 in my camera Sony Alpha 6000?
Thanks, and have a good day.
Fernando.

Yes you can (my 2nd camera). On travelling the A6000 gets the ony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS for very long telephoto . Works also well on A7RIV (my 1st camera).
@@gerhardwiesinger what's you IG man ? I want to see the results on A6000
Christopher...Howdy! Would you consider it more useful to look at sharpness at the rule of thirds point of intesection rather than the corners...we typically will either be in the middle or the intersection of the rule of thirds
I own an a7iii. I'm thinking that buying an apsc+70 350, it's less expensive than buying a 100-400 😩
But you need to keep in mind that because of the crop factor this lens wont be the same as the 100-400. APS-C is a nice platform but you're better of with your A7iii if I just take a look at the body and functions, I mean there is only IBIS in the A6500 and A6600 for example :'(.
@@Jylakir that's so true, but for occasional shooting the 100400 it's too much expensive 😭
@@lino100x100 Maybe you get one cheap as used. Otherwise maybe something to save money on the long run and make yourself a big present in the future :).
Can you give me some sample picture at 200 an 300 and 350mm both crop and FF?
on the non R FF series, you'll get 10Mp images, which is only usable at best.
Great review, thanks. How many mpx can you squeeze cropping the pic out of A7RII when you zoom to 350mm?
I know I’m late but it’s 18 megapixels
Hey, @Chris please suggest me a good zoom lens for my Canon 200D for bird shooting (should be in budget range). Thanks.
Been following you for a while, shwmae! Where in wales are you from
I live in Ceredigion
You can use this lens in full frame mode from 70 to about 180 if you just remove back plastic cover on the lens.
Hi Christopher, what is your favorite fruit?
I'll tell you that, if you tell me your favourite vegetable
@@christopherfrost Okay. Broccoli or zucchini.
@@EternalLife91 Well, I don't eat fruit. I only eat pizza. Gotcha!
Can't believe it's good at 350mm. At sunny day maybe?
I like how everyone is complaining about the slow aperture making this lens "useless" for professional work. Is the 100-400 GM also useless then?
If the lens is covering FF at 70mm, why does it vignette?
It is not really related. The size of the covering circle is related to the lens back elements, the vignette is from front elements vs aperture. Typically when the lens is optimized for FF then you have less vignette in APSC, but… this lens is designed for APSC ;).
Thank you dear 👍
Sony 👍👍
Thanks again.
El unico q tiene problemas sos vos. No podes comparar este teleobjetivo con esa antigüedad d nikon
i'm here just for the intro..:)
Bought it and returned it. I was much happier with the image quality from my adapted Canon 70-200 f4 iii. I should have know from the begining that that was a superior lens.
I mean, most ppl will buy this for the reach. The fact it has great IQ just helps justify it
Schlong blong I’m using this on my A7RIV
Should have better packaging
"Slightly older camera body". Well it feels like you just got it a few months ago. But it's already two generations old. Welp.
I've thoughts about upgrading to the a7R IV - but a 42mp sensor seems like a nice medium :-)
@@christopherfrost indeed, where will it go from 70 MP though, they're already trying to squeeze 100MP in some phones now. Not that they have any quality glass to match that in such a tiny sensor anyway.
@@christopherfrost thanks for the * on the AF performance. I can rest easy now. Highly recommend a7rIV. It's my main camera for weddings and portraits and spare time shooting.

I love your videos and I'm a regular, but I do have a question. Why do you bother to check lenses with corrections turned off. Most people won't even know how to turn them off, and what is the advantage to doing so. Nice review anyway.
@Foto4Max apparently there's no cost, as the lens was very good
@@johnjgilchrist There is always a cost. When you correct distortion the corners are getting stretched which results in a loss of sharpness. It is noticeable on a pixel level so that's why I never correct distortion when shooting something without straight lines (like most landscapes).
Most people totally know. Many people shoot raw. It's kinda nice to know also affects sharpness often.
+this lens does fine but many won't after correction and you just wonder what's the problem. Sometimes it also changes focal length a fair bit by crop through correction
I'm still waiting for telephoto kit lens for the average consumer.
I doubt that lens will be a kit lens.
Try the 55-210mm Sony. Decent images and VERY decent price, especially as a used lens. Try B&H or Adorama or EBay...but try one out first.
That'll be the Sony 55-210
I saw better sharpness or similar at the corners... Wow!
hmm..I think this lens is worth buying.
