  • In this video I share my experience of mixing trance music on a pair of Audio Technica LP120 USB decks. In summary, for the longer transitions, it's hard to get the beats perfectly matched due to the 'steppiness' of the pitch control meaning that small adjustments make a huge difference to the platter speed.
Also, there appears to be an issue where the motor control detects the platter slowing down when beatmatching, and speeds up loads to compensate for this, completely throwing transitions off. There's a great demonstration of this in the video. I believe this is commonly known as 'cogging'. The issues can also be seen in action on my other RUclips channel with all my mixes:

As other decks such as the Pioneer PLX-500, Reloop RP4000 are based on the same Hanpin base turntable, I'd be interested to hear if anyone has experienced similar. Both decks I have do this, so I don't believe it's a fault, and is actually a design flaw when used for mixing.

Great video and demonstration! I wonder if the newer version (ATLP120XUSB) has the same problem? I've heard it's a general problem with digital pitches, as opposed to analog pitches. Cheers

I’m also wondering the same. I have Reloop RP-7000s now, and if they do have this problem, it doesn’t cause anywhere near as much of an issue. I presume due to the increased torque, they never manage to get so far behind that they feel the need to go nuts.
