Just stumbled across this video after going through a nostalgic rabbit hole of James Zabeila sets and as soon as I heard his voice I was like “hang on a sec…” I’m 40 now and was being taught to mix by this guy in the early 2000s!! What a legend that he’s still going! Thank you for all you taught me man!!
This , ladies and gents is what a beginner lesson should be like. Simple and to the point ! Ive been on the decks since 94 and still learnt some good points ... That's a true teacher . 👍🙌
Checking back in after 16 years, learnt so much from this man watching his videos in the local internet cafe and then going home to practice pitch riding. I'm now in my 40's and teaching my girlfriend to mix so came back for a teaching refresher.
Always enjoy your Vinyl Mixing tutorials. I have been a DJ for over 30 years and nothing is more satisfying than to mix 2 records in perfect beat and key and keeping the flow of the music going. Keep up the Vinyl lessons, they are always helpful.
Took my turntables out of storage and broke out all my old dnb, attempting to knock the rust off after 15 years. Struggling to cue, beatmatch, phrase match and EQ properly again. Thanks for the refresher now it's just practice practice practice ftw.
@@theoracle7463 For me dnb is more easy to mix , faster tempo (so u get feedback faster if the pitch is too fast or too slow), a clear snare ( mostly) to focus on, i never focus on the bass or beat, that confuses me. Get snares , hihat's , claps in beat, the rest follows.
There is also another way....: This is all very fine, but applies mainly to House, Trance, etc, which were produced with beatmatching in mind. I am mostly playing Classic and Northern Soul as well as vintage Boss Reggae, so no long instrumental intros or outros, nor extended breaks. So I beatmatch New York Style, like Cool Herc did in '73, fading over just the bass (i.e, kickdrum) from track B to track A, while fading out the bass of track A, so you've got the bass track of track B accompanying the mids and highs of track A. Let this run for a moment, and then fade out midst and highs from track A whilst fading in mids and highs from track B. This way you avoid clashing vocals, harmonies, melodies, keys, etc. Full kill on all 3 frequency ranges for both channels is a must for this, but if you can: try it. It's really something else, it's really fun and it really excites the punters!
Honestly….. I taught my self to play vinyl over the past 2 years snd I feel I’m pretty good….. scratch that, I taught my self and saw some of your videos. You’re well versed and give good info in a short amount of time. We appreciate your info bruv. I wish I didn’t have to learn about spl the hard way. To those learning…. If appears from what Iv seen that some people have a natural musical mind. Beat matching vinyl is a little hard at first, making sure you’re in “season” with 8/16/32 counts is even harder. Those whose brain doesn’t subconsciously count beats/melody’s are at a disadvantage. To some people, the cyclic nature of music, the “law” that is that law for how ever long that track is, and the physical manipulation of media just does something to satisfy the neurons when that mix is just right.
Dude can I just say I’ve been watching you since I was a wee young lad, only ever laying eyes on gear in your videos back in the days of early RUclips. You helped me grow into the DJ I am today more than I realized until now that I’m seeing your videos again for the first time in what feels like eons lol big love Ellaskins 🙏🏼 keep teaching and inspiring, maybe I’ll show my young pup your videos when’s he’s old enough to chop it up ❤️
i genuinely feel privileged to be one of the few who have seen this video so far. i say few because it deserves hundreds of thousands, its that sort of quality. who said good things aint free!?
I started sodding about mixing music about 3 yrs ago and gone down the digital route, would of loved to have been a vinyl junkie but that's a bit hard to do if you haven't been collecting vinyl for years or your not lucky enough to find someone with a job lot to sell, I would of got bored very easily....I bought some controllers and a week later had over 9000 tunes to do some bad mixing with (and hand on heart, can honestly say that I've never used the sync button). So unless you all want to donate 10 bits of quality vinyl each and in return, i'll happily find space for some decks, please stop knocking us digital junkies just because we have newer stuff with more flashy light on 😉.....it should be about the music and atmosphere you provide. Peace 💛
Thank you mate. I've watched a lot of videos on this subject and you're the first DJ to speak about the musical side of mixing, not just the technical beat matching side of it. Awesome. Very useful.
Jonathan, you convinced me to convert from digital to the real vinyl. Thank you very much. Now I have to spend another 2000 euro for gear. 🙄 Cheers mate! Great video, very helpful. Keep it spinning. 👌🙂
Awesome lesson. Cant believe ive been moving the pitch and the table same time trying to match. Haha. Oh yeah! Half hour agter watching this! 🎉🎉🎉. Thank you!
I've tried to show folk how to mix in my time with turntables. The hardest part is trying to explain music timings. For the majority of dance music its 32 or 64 beats. Theres 2 really important parts to mixing. 1. Make sure you have the same genre of songs, you can drop the occasional "different" tune to give a lift or break up the monotony. However, constantly changing your song genre makes it messy and youll have confused people on your dance floor. 2. Probably following on from above, know your records, know what direction you want to take folk. If you're playing weddings, have a collection of songs for everyone there. If youre playing a house night, make sure its house records and not pan pipe records. There's an art to this, but also you can have shoddy mixing and great tunes.
awsome, nice tutorial. I might just add that for knowing the song frazes and beats, its really important that you are able to hear it and count it in your head, knowing when 16 beats passed, or 32 when it comes for drop in. Without this rhythm, its hard to be dj.
Nice video! If you really get into trouble you could always cue the second track to beat three before the verse, then do a big spin back on the currently playing track then immedialely start the second track and flick the cross fader over so it comes in on beat one of the verse.
Great job done I really enjoy that, and I love vinyl all the way I know where he's coming from, he adds fun to his mixing which great and must always feel relaxed otherwise your mix will not stand out, have fun and, get it done...!! thanks. Bless you😇😇🙏🏿🙏🏿
Would be great if you did a video specifically on how to know intuitively which track is faster or slower and how to speed it up/slow down accordingly.
You have to tech urself this this is what sets digital djs apart from vinyl no bpm qs are any of that best way to do is get 2 records the same and put one faster and slower and work from there
Great video - doing only vinyl too and in some case its rly different. What i like on djing only vinyl, is that u got something IN ur hands. Something that u can rly touch.
Amazing video! Any tips on not having the needle jump when cuing up the first downbeat? I believe I have my torn arm height and weight correct but sometimes the needle jumps when cuing on the first downbeat. Any tips?
I've always thought, how am I gonna hear my headphones over the two huge subs and speakers on a stick... or the club soundsystem? But it's never been a problem. Next month we are gonna set up a pretty big system on the beach. Not 50,000 watts but at least 8 huge speakers are gonna be set up and I believe we are gonna have a blast :^) A friend of mine did 14 years in federal prison but the last year he has been out, and he has been pulling money out his ass and buying lasers, speakers, amps, etc. We are trying to have a successful liftoff in a town that has never had a big scene.
simple thing .. hold the snare on a record , wait for the downbeat and release the record when snare hits . Means less chance of missing your moment . Between turntableism , jungle/dnb and garage / bassline i find it a useful way to mix
Good point outs but as an experienced vinyl DJ of old here i don’t do any of that above i just know by ear instantly when to mix in & what works the most vital part is knowing which record is faster then the other ( adjustments & mix recovery ) you can get any mix in time but the trick is to keep it there tight by listening & working up the vibe .
Currently saving up for some used turntables and a mixer. I'll propably use DVS since i won't be able to buy enough records to have a good collection. I've been using a controller for a bit over a year now and i want to move towards turntables since my favourite way to mix is EQ mixing and beatmatching, doing slow transitions and stuff. I feel like turntables would be better for my "Style" of DJing.
I got a killer deal on some used numark tables and a xone mixer for like 500 all together. Then found someone selling 100 classic house records for 100 bucks . Try to find a deal on some vinyl like that. Def worth learning how to mix with just your ears and vinyl, will make everything else so much easier after.
@@trendingshortshorts i could get a two turntable and mixer setup for 495 but the pics look shady af and i have no clue what turntables they are. The brand is american audio but idk what model.
Hi ellaskin! What is your tip on remembering the number of bars for your phrases. I would imagine that becomes increasingly difficult if you have mass of records to play and recall from memory. I started counting out the bars and labeling it on a post it note and stick on the cover. 11:39
Question you have two records one starts playing you want to mix the other record with the one is playing what is the best moment (que point) of mixing them together in the song ? listning to the record that is playing .. and are you then remixing alsow ?
This man really did teach/inspire a generation of djs 😭
I can attest to that. I started mixing long before I watched his videos, but his videos truly got me into proper form and function
Thank you ❤️
i have seen this mans videos since i was a teenager, im 30 now and i still havent got myself a pair of turntables.
If I could one day shake his hand I would feel complete.
Just stumbled across this video after going through a nostalgic rabbit hole of James Zabeila sets and as soon as I heard his voice I was like “hang on a sec…”

Damn, his back and forth play, converging the pitch adjustment is mesmerizing
What are the greatest DJ teachers ever born or alive people this man
He's and OG

You can see the experience oozing out of this man. Been watching his vids since my 20s. Im 40 now

learning vinyl after being a digital dj and is a whole new ball game, even more respect for OG vinyl spinners!! this is helpful , thank you
Thank you iv had this argument some many times
Saw Carl Cox and Ritchie Hawton do it with 3/4 decks. Insane skills and control.
Loving the scales analogy - flour on one side and coke on the other 😆👍

DnB is harder than house, the beats differ from track to track and there isn't a set kick on every beat
@@theoracle7463 For me dnb is more easy to mix , faster tempo (so u get feedback faster if the pitch is too fast or too slow), a clear snare ( mostly) to focus on, i never focus on the bass or beat, that confuses me. Get snares , hihat's , claps in beat, the rest follows.
it always amazes me watching a dj on vinyl get a track matched together in less than 4 beats.
I know what you say...same here
There is also another way....:

Fantastic tutorial, and delivered with no ego. Thanks!
