Maannn. Ive been dj-ing for a few years. I wish i had seen this video in the beginning of my journey. It would have saved me a lot of time. Everything he says is spot on. Well explained. All you new guys starting out pay attention to this man
Once i learned to count beats, bars and phrases properly I practiced by counting in my head, muting the volume on what ever source of music i had playing and un muting whenever i taught there would be a phrase change. It has worked wonders for me regardless what genre of music I'm playing.
If u are used to listening music everyday for long time your Brain can learn things like timing without Even knowing what the term timing means in music . Its works best if u listen to a lot ( and i mean really lot) tehno or tech house bc of the structure. Timing come naturally to me bc of that (mostly) .its Almost fascinating how the brain can learn paterns without Even you realizing that.
@@plantinpants6218 Definitely. I've been rapping and listening to much music since I was a child and when I started DJing and it came to things like counting and phrasing I was like "well isn't that obvious?", because to me it was. Only later I realized that that isn't really instinctive for most people and your brain just picks up on that, I never learned how to count bars and such, I just felt it with my body and brain
Great job (Y), and yes Dj TLM it is more more more fun, i started with controller and i used to use sync but i practiced on beat-mtaching manually and mix like old school way, and now with your tutorial i learned how to beat-match the second way , thank you sir !
Thank you so much for the best video I've found so far on getting more technically skilled with my turntables ~ I wasn't expecting to see SEVERAL different techniques, concisely broken down & presented so clearly! Your dedication to the craft is obvious & contagious! And your no-nonsense delivery is giving me confidence ~ like there's a clear Game Plan now & yeah, I've got this! 👍🙏✌️
I'm using XDJ-700's which have the BPM counter but I'm gonna cover it with some paper and tape to train my ears. Great explanation of the pitch riding technique, much more clear than others. Gonna put your techniques in to practice tomorrow when I have the time, cheers.
Even though I've been "trying" to mix for a lot of years, all of your info is super informative! You have a really great method for putting out instructions. Thanks. Ted Twis
Its funny your introduction sums up the last 11 months of my development as a DJ. I went for a controller first, loved sync, got bored and learned to beat match by ear. I have also had the pleasure of spinning vinyl and I think saying that the process is more organic when you beat match yourself, is probably the closest you can get to how I now feel about the whole DJ experience. What you said about sync maybe not working and having the ability to fall back on using you ears is the exact reason my (older) DJ friends nagged me that much !!
HI, I'm 16 and I'm getting into djing. And all of your tip videos helped me learn the basics and was super easy to follow along to. SO THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!
you become my master in tutorials thanks so much for your time and tips i really follow your tips and all that you can said , blessings and dont stop with this channel . peace out
djTLMtv Nice videos. They are really informative can't wait to get my equipment (being shipped) & practice your valuable lessons. You're of much help. Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa.
Just got into dj-ing, like brand new into it haha. I’m incredibly grateful for these lessons, definitely taking my time trying to learn the basics of scratching. I just picked up a pioneer ddj-rev1 controller and serato dj pro.
It's great to see new blood learning these old school tricks of the trade and passing them on to the next generation. Makes this old man feel good about being a DJ back in the day.
Hey TLM just wanted to say thx alot fam cuz i ended up joining the crateconnect pool after ur recommendation and i thinks its incredibly dope!! Im very pleased with it and am getting alot of use out of it!! The selection library is incredible so il definitely be staying a member for a long time!! Thx again homie!! Lookin forward to ur next mixtape series vid!! Coming soon hopefully?
DJ TLM yours is the first tutorial that I've watched that makes sense. Especially your video on Counting the beats. Although this a hobby for me. I play at open deck nights and I want my technical use of the turntables to be more polished. Thanks and get well soon 👌
Hey really really thankful to you for this video....i saw a lot of videos on beatmaching but none could help out.....this one really could tell about that "nudge" thing......keep going.....salutes.. 💯
TLM, thanks for the great tutorials. I've been working my way through these different series. Looking forward to the next in this series. I've had a decent amount of experience mixing vinyl on turntables and feel comfortable with beat matching, although I'm no pro yet. One thing I have heard from other DJs is mixing songs in key. I have tried looking up tutorial videos and information on the Internet, but most relates to music theory and gets beyond my current knowledge. I was wondering if you had plans to reference this in this series at all or if there is no quick way to get brushed up on identifying key by ear and just have to dive in to the whole theory and deep understanding. Not trying to be lazy, I will get to that point for sure. Just looking for something to get my understanding started. I have noticed in some digital music like on Beatport that it states the key of the song. I'm guessing that may show up in something like Serato, which would be helpful, but I'm not to that point yet either. Plus, much like beat matching I'm sure it's a good skill to have doing it by ear. Thanks for reading. I know this is probably a difficult topic to tackle. I very much appreciate any feedback you have.
great video. the way i learned was the same way but one things i learned was to keep your hand on the pitch control. i started out on technics sl 2000's and they had the knob pitch and we were play songs that had real drummers on them so you had to keep your hand on the pitch. and it became so much easyer when the 1200;s came out. i still mix the same way today after 36 years of djing. but now iam useing pioneer cdj 900 and doing it the same way. ive seen and heard so many dj's use what i call the i cant mix button to get over.if you cant mix well like you said go home and work on it. because the dj's thats been around for years know the music and we can tell rite from the bat that they are useing the i cant mix button and mostly when they try to mix the old disco or as we here in jersey call it club music.
Great tip on the mixing / practicing with hip hop beats, I always found that hard. House, Garage etc are way easier by comparison in my experience, although I first started out with breaks mixing and scratching way back which is what got me in this stuff in the first place. Anyway really liking the tutorials informative and well paced. Hard to know where to pitch these things sometimes, since you have such a wide spectrum in the audience.
This was a great tutorial mainly because you never had any derogatory and belittling remarks towards those who cant beatmatch and use the sync button. Subscribing to your channel bro!
Thanks! I'm new to DJing and found it hard to hear if the new track is faster or slower, but I'll try to start listening to the snare rather than the kick drum. As you say, the snare is more crisp so that might be better.
I've never used the lone pitch fader adjustment technique. I've seen other DJs do that over the years but I never tried it because I am so stuck in my ways using hand record and platter movements. Going to practice that on my next practice session.
I lost it at "If that sounded good to you......you're not ready for this" 😂😂😂
:) :)
Ryan Fenstermacher lmao 😂
djTLMtv dope stuff
I breathed a sigh of relief to pass the first test. lol jk

Amazing video mate really helpful, clear and well explained, nice one!
Really great chat and talk about it. Already thinking its better than plenty other beat matching discussions/tips.

You are a good teacher, but I am just starting to become a DJ.. I need some real advise?.. I just bought a new Mack book pro. What's next??
I've never used the lone pitch fader adjustment technique. I've seen other DJs do that over the years but I never tried it because I am so stuck in my ways using hand record and platter movements. Going to practice that on my next practice session.
