True. Just so happens that back then it meant they were making heavy metal with the occasional "ballad", and slow metal, and fast metal. Now it means making ROCK N ROLL.
He was talking about the spirit of Metallica - the band always doing what it wants to do, not catering to expectations. If you like it, cool. If you don't, cool.
Drove solo from Oklahoma to Ft. Lauderdale back in the day..............Sanitarium came on the radio.........YEAAAAAAAAAH!!!!! My Trans Am and I were very happy!!!
"C'mon baby, come to my pad, We'll have a good time!" That was priceless. Has anyone noticed Lar's Danish accent? He tries to cover it up sometimes. Dork. :)
It's great here how LArs says Metallica will always do thing son their terms and go in whatever direction that feels right for them, and not worry about what other people think of it. Since then they've done alot of things that many havn't agreed with; cutting their hair, St. Anger, playing with orchetra. Their always doing what's right for them despite what people may think. Metallica have integrity!
I was front row for the entire 10 hours in Minneapolis. I became a fan of this band I'd never heard of. I was also one of 30,000 people who booed Kingdom Clone!
Man, James' voice sounds so killer during the Sanitarium segment at 3:28 - 3:45. I saw them on this tour in Philadephia, this really brings back memories!
man the alpine valley show was awsome.wish i could jump into a time machine and go back to that day anf go kick back on the hill side again metallica frickin rocked that day
Love the way Lars talks, you can hate him for how hes changed Metallica and how he drums (though I don't see why people hate his drumming, fast isn't always the best), but Lars really does speak a lot of truth; they can do whatever they want, it's their band, not bound by what other people say; if Load, Re-Load and St. Anger were better than their first 5 Albums, than you wouldn't call them sell-outs. They make Music how they want, they experiment, something a lot of Bands are afraid of doing.
Listen to what lars says at the beginning and the end of the vid, people call them sellouts because of the black album and the fallowing albums. they did what they felt was right...props.
@haz0rTV omfg did u even listen this interview?last ulrich's sentence was"I think the part of metallica is there is always the thing that we can always go to every direction WE want, we all set the terms ourselfs i dont wanna sit here and go"i never do this,i never do that"because if it feels right to us then we are gonna do it we are not gonna worry what other people think of it!"if they sold out(as u say)they wanted to do that and they dont give a shit about it! what does"sold out"means for u?
@ToLiveIsToDie305 He said they'd never change their inward looking mindset. ie, they will always do what they want to do and not care what anyone else thinks
HAH, actually that is me. After looking at this and seeing myself in a fedora and a Lita Ford t-shirt, I just shake my head and think what was I thinking...LOL
WOW! I was there in 1988 back when I was 18 years old. Nobody could touch 'em back then. Check out 5:12-5:20. I love the venom in James Hetfield's voice!
@teenmetalfreak3 unfortunately i don't man, but every head bang will be for you guys. for those who don't get to see this show i will head bang for you!. I'm not even sure if they will do another one of these big 4 concerts.
@ToLiveIsToDie305 You forgot to mention the part immediatly following that, were he "...to cater to anyone else's minds". I doubt when that when Load (or any of their albums, for that fact) came out, they really gave a fuck what others thought of their music. I'm ok with Load... It has a couple of gems on there.
@k7stredder no he's the voice of Metallica the rest of them were too shy so Lars wasn't afraid to let people know how Metallica were, don't forget it was Lars who also put that add in the paper, it was james' selfishness that he knew Lars was rich and knew a few people to get in on that, woulda done the same thing though i suppose
Well, I was just giving my opinion, and agreeing with most people, except for the 12 year olds who just started listening to Metallica. Also, I was watching this video to see what Van Halen had to say about Metallica. And I don't hate them... As I said, I liked them in this age, but not since albums like Death Magnetic or Saint Anger.
1987 Monsters of Rock because of Deep Purple ( I didn't know that there were any other Hard Rock bands at all) Band before Deep Purple was Metallica. Band before Metallica was Dio.
to those who call them sell outs and etc etc lars just answered u "well do what we want if it feels right to us not caring about what anyone thinks" summarizingly, if u dont like it GTFO
Wow, 20 years ago. I saw Monsters at Foxboro and Meadowlands. Metallica easily stole both shows. Amazing considering they had never been on MTV or any mainstream radio station at that point. You either loved them or had no idea who they were-there was no in between.
First time I saw them was on this tour in Indy at the Hoosier Dome. I spent most of my money on Metallica shirts! They stole the show, that's for sure.
He said he would never change to other people. And to this day they never did. They have always changed for themselves and because they have wanted to!
Remember this was pre-internet and they had almost zero radio airplay. They were true Monsters of Rock.
Metallica has gone on record for years many interviews stating that they do what they want. they won't do what anyone says. the create for themselves
True. Just so happens that back then it meant they were making heavy metal with the occasional "ballad", and slow metal, and fast metal. Now it means making ROCK N ROLL.
i tottaly love lars man ur not the only one since i play drums hes like my fav
And there it is: Lars Ulrich predicting this bands status as selling out, right at the end of this clip. Metallica (1983-1988)

Thanks Metallica for the first 4 albums, its the best what happened to me.

Metallica of the 80's - untouchable!
Thanks for posing this, I had a copy of this but lost it. I'm actually in it.
What a great show, saw it at Rich Stadium in Buffalo. I was the BIGGEST Metallica fan in those days.
thumbs up if you think JAMES look fucking badass
I was there man! 1988 Mineapolis MN..They ROCK!!
I still listen to them now.
James was one of most badass intimidating frontmen back then....and I love how he's matured as he grew older
I was front row for the entire 10 hours in Minneapolis. I became a fan of this band I'd never heard of. I was also one of 30,000 people who booed Kingdom Clone!

Welcome home sanitarium
YEAH!! there should be a DVD from this concert!!
I think he meant that their attitude about playing the kind of music they want to play will never change.
That fan with the Lita Ford t-shirt at 2:28-2:30 kills me every time! lol
4:30 😬
James voice sounds fucking sick as hell here. Wish he could still sing like that.
Jason in interview "I realy like my shoe"
Most of the interview took place in Foxboro Massachusetts. I know because I'm in this video.

The metallica boys jam with Sammy down in Cabo, thats pretty cool.

Светлана Баева welcome home (sanitarium)
@mujuma
great comment
I really appreciate it
Ulrich actually said, in an interview after MoP that, "After our fifth record we are going to be huge all over the world" ...
I HAVE TO WATCH THE VIDEO WITH THOSE 3 GUYS DANCING IN THE BEGINNING!
At 1:57 when Jason is talking about himself being part of the band, Kirk looks a bit thoughtful. I think he was recalling his days with Cliff.
@beecee151 dokken is a good band but too many bands covered up dokken so people never got to experience them, why u think they got rained on?
THIS is THE BEST metal band all 'TIME! yyyyeeeeeaaaa \m/ FROM ITALY. ......😆
@xxTheHoundxx1 Ozzy uses same kind of glasses :DD

Badass hair flow moment lmao
METALLICA ROCKS!!
yes i can, it was quite hard to figure urs out but i worked hard on it.
James Hetfield was almost not in any interview backthen, because he was so out of control!! ^^
He also said that if it feels right to them then they would do it at the end of the video.
@ToLiveIsToDie305
He said they'd never change their inward looking mindset. ie, they will always do what they want to do and not care what anyone else thinks
Son otra cosa deveras, ellos siempre seran los reyes...
if someone said they are sell outs thn judging by promo pics from the albums since load it would be hard for you to disagree
was that slash at 2:28?
HAH, actually that is me. After looking at this and seeing myself in a fedora and a Lita Ford t-shirt, I just shake my head and think what was I thinking...LOL
What's with the John Lennon glasses Lars?

The Memphis show was my first ever rock show, and YES, METALLICA RULED THAT DAY!!!!!!!!
This was when Metallica took over. They were unstoppable
AWESOMENESS
no i meant the straps are shorter. they actually play better with the guitars higher. but ya, I know they play Eb now, I hate that.
Lars is one of the best drummers ever
He is the best drummer for Metallica.
@beecee151 if dokken would have kept it together it would of been great don and george never got the recognition that they deserve
soz i meant the live '96 where every time between songs is COME ON BABY

WOW! I was there in 1988 back when I was 18 years old. Nobody could touch 'em back then. Check out 5:12-5:20. I love the venom in James Hetfield's voice!
im wearing the same shirt Jasons wearing at 1:12
@teenmetalfreak3 unfortunately i don't man, but every head bang will be for you guys. for those who don't get to see this show i will head bang for you!. I'm not even sure if they will do another one of these big 4 concerts.
Kirk seems really humble.
@ToLiveIsToDie305
You forgot to mention the part immediatly following that, were he "...to cater to anyone else's minds".

I'm ok with Load... It has a couple of gems on there.
Lead singer of Van Halen after David Lee Roth was and he has his solo band
At around 4:40 James's face resembles Neil Young's face
@k7stredder no he's the voice of Metallica the rest of them were too shy so Lars wasn't afraid to let people know how Metallica were, don't forget it was Lars who also put that add in the paper, it was james' selfishness that he knew Lars was rich and knew a few people to get in on that, woulda done the same thing though i suppose

Yeah, after 1986!!
Lars feels like "beep" all day when he doesn't sleep well.
Dude, he's Filipino/Irish...
=( My condolences.
@5:30.......Lars says Metallica will never change.......if thats the case....explain Load,Re Load, and St Anger?
He said he would never change to other people. And to this day they never did. They have always changed for themselves and because they have wanted to!
