About purging layouts, I did get rid of a few, but not many. I don't regret the ones I emptied. They weren't layouts of family or people. I would say before you lose any layouts, ask your kids how much and what they will want for their own. I gave my older kids some of their books, and that has been helpful to my storage.

    • @CreatedByGwen

I think that's the key, to get rid of ones that don't mean a lot to me... ones that were made just for fun. I think I can start there and see how it goes. Many have suggested taking pictures of them too which sounds like a good idea to me. I really appreciate your advice 💗

Your new space is inspiring, so functional and attractive. I share a small room with my husband and so much is stored above my desk and in a cube shelving unit we put a back on and castors under the window beside me. I couldn't purge any layouts as they are all family and friends. I recently visited family in the UK and took a large album of layouts from the photos they send me, they were thrilled as it was a surprise. I feel gifting is a great way to purge, same goes for supplies.

Thank you so so much. Sounds like you've taken advantage of your vertical space which is clever! The layouts in the very least need going through, I don't even really know what's there if I'm completely honest... maybe there are duplicates or design team work that I really only created to showcase supplies. Maybe there are some that I wouldn't think twice about letting go of. I'm sure there are many many others that I will keep... I really just need to sort it all out.

Knowing what you have and where you put it is crucial for a good crafting experience. I don't have room in the "office" I use for crafting (no big horizontal surface) so I do the actual process on our dining room table and store my craft supplies where ever in the house I can find room. During the pandemic I was crafting more AND buying more and started duplicating some of my stuff. I got an inventory program and took the time to put EVERYTHING that had more than 10 items in it being quite detailed. Now I can go to my inventory and see what I'm looking for AND where it is. I still have to clean up the dining room table everyday before dinner BUT I'm a much happier crafter now.

Thanks for sharing your process and how you make your space work for you! I love the idea of an inventory list especially for things like stamps and dies. It's always hard to remember what you have when you're at the craft store.

Oh gosh, I shiver at the thought of purging layouts!!!! The joy is sure in the making, but I scrapbook for the memories too!! I still remember (with horror!!) when years back, on a cleaning and decluttering whim, I got rid of negatives from a couple of journeys abroad. I didn't scrapbook at the time, so those printed photos are carelessly and casually glued in an improvised journal. I would now like to decently scrapbook them, but gone are the negatives (ooops, that's aging myself, by the way!), and you bet I regret the impromptu tossing. My advice would be not to rush that part of the organisazion project and give yourself time for a second thought on the layout that really are meaningless to you. Love from Italy

Your new space is beautiful! You will be very happy in there. The words “Happy Place” are written all over it! I have a fairly small craft room too, so I don’t have a lot of space to store hundreds of layouts either. I do have my layouts in several scrapbooks but if I had as many as you have, I would probably be filling the scrapbooks and giving them to the person who is featured in them or I would put them on a shelf in a different room so everyone could look at them. If you have a specific space for storage, you could put them in totes in your storage area. I have a huge walk in attic so that would be easy for me as well. My sister loves to put her layouts in shadow boxes to decorate her home and give as gifts. One of my RUclips friends has a specific space in her craft room where she will hang the layouts she really loves in shadow boxes and change them out when she has new ones to display. I don’t know what she does with them when she takes them down but I do know she makes a lot of them for family members. I have another friend who makes a scrapbook each year for her son and his family and gives it to them for Christmas each year. And then I have yet another friend who puts all of hers in scrapbooks and stores them all in her craft too. She won’t give them away because she’s afraid something will happen to them. Her husband is in the military and they move often, so she is constantly packing all of them up and unpacking them. I think if I were her, I’d be looking for a better way 😂 I love the idea of taking photos of them too! I try to remember to take photos of all my layouts so if anything happens to them, I can make them again. I have lost my home to fire before, so I take photos of everything I make now. I hope these ideas help you. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do with them all!

@@CreatedByGwen Oh, I just thought of an idea I want to try myself so thought I’d share it with you too. If you have the space above all your shelving & the stuff hanging on your walls, you could put together a shelf that goes all the way around the room to put all your layouts in albums. Everyone always says to go vertical when you can and I think that would be a great way to display albums full of layouts. I really need to remember this idea for when I get back in my craft room! I am busy cleaning out a friend’s house right now because she has gone into a nursing home. My craft room now looks more like a storage room for all of her stuff that I need to get to the people she wants to have it 🤣

@@juliamullie8677 Thanks so much for sharing this idea Julia... I have quite high ceilings in this space actually so something like that would fit. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it aesthetically though, I do understand what you're saying to use the vertical space, but I feel like adding them to all sides would make the room feel much smaller. I like the idea of maybe running them along one wall though, especially if they were albums that I didn't need to access all of the time. I'm also considering setting up a book shelf in our formal lounge room and putting them all in there.

So much joy in this share! I’m in the same boat with you. I have more layouts than my boys will ever want. Congrats on the new home! And TFS your grid paper mock up of your room. I’m sure some ppl think “of course” but I had not thought of that. I too, have just been blessed to buy a new home with a dedicated craft & paint studio. It’s small as well. No bigger than yours and w/o your cool walk in closet.. you even have a window! 👍🏼 sadly I was not ahead like you. So my movers just put all of my furniture in the room. I know your video will help others not end up like me.. thankfully I do have a hand truck to help move heavy items.
I also love your idea of less is more. I purged like a crazy person when packing up my paints & craft supplies for the move. I donated A LOT to local day care and after school programs. Including a Cricut machine. It’s a great feeling to give to ppl who will use it and may go without. I totally agree with you too. It feels much better to have less..
Oh before I forget. When you mentioned purging your layouts. Would you let go of the photos? That’s the part that always gets me. I have purged layouts and done newer different styles with those photos. But I have trouble letting go of photos of my loved ones & my pets. I would love to hear how you (and others subs) handle letting go of or storing photos that you can’t let go of.
God bless you- congrats again on your great space! ✂️

I keep them all. So I'd love to hear what others say about that too! Thank you so much for taking the time to share all this, what a blessing you are!! xo

Thanks for sharing your new room and how you organised it. I picked up an Ikea 4 x 4 unit on Facebook Marketplace for $20. It just needed a good clean. This set in motion my total revamping of my Craft Room as I didn't have dedicated places for things - they were scattered around - and it just wasn't working for me. I recognise the KMart Fridge bins from your video and I got rid of my Cropper Hopper units and use the KMart bins instead which works heaps better. I also invested in KMart over the wardrobe storage containers and this has made great use of what was otherwise an unused space & now I can see so much better what I have & I USE those things because I can see it. I purged a whole lot of stuff and it was really cathartic 🙂 I am also in the midst of labelling what is where because it is amazing how you forget where something is so instead of searching through looking for a particular brand, I can go straight to it. Having created a couple of cards in the past week, it was so much easier to pack up afterwards because everything has a place & therefore heaps quicker. SO MANY THINGS that you talked about in your video resonated with me & are really helpful. I don't think there is a perfect solution but I have done it on a budget & my rolling trolley also came from KMart - I just needed to put it together. One thing I am trying to figure out is the washi tape storage that is practical so when I saw what you have, I was wondering if you can please enlighten me?

IF you do, I'd love to know about it 💗 I have considered labelling things, but I don't like the look of it 🙈 so I just have to remember where stuff is lolol

Great space! I am not sure what the solution is to your problem of having too many layouts. If I were you, I would figure out how to keep them. Too many times I have gotten rid of something and have regretted it...probably at least 70-80% of the time. This is why it would be hard for me to follow your advice. I go through phases of crafting, so I wouldn't get rid of something because I haven't used it in a while or even if I am not loving it in the moment. Once I get a house, I will be keeping all of my supplies, even if that means I have to fit them in the great room or multiple rooms. However, I do appreciate your suggestions and style of organizing. Ideally, all of my stuff will fit so my room can look like yours does. But that is not a requirement or deal breaker for me.
I do like the idea of having things you use on a regular basis within arms reach. I have implemented that in my space and I use way more of my stuff this way. It also makes cleaning the desk much easier and faster. Having a place for the stuff to go also helps so much!!
Now back to your layouts, if you do decide to get rid of your layouts, take a picture of them. I did this with my dad's stuff and my grandparent's stuff when they passed away. The grief made me want to keep everything to remember them by. But realistically, it would be impossible to keep all of their stuff. So, I made sure to take pictures. This way, I can always look at it if I want to but I don't physically have to keep the stuff.

I've only donated things I know I will never use, supplies I no longer love because they just are not my style anymore. The good thing about stamps and dies and pushes is that they don't go bad and you'll be able to use them over and over again into the future.

I used to watch a creator who's channel seems to have been deleted but she was very minimalist in her supplies and very open about the fact that her primary goal was the creative process. She would often go back and dismantle pages to reuse the supplies and this did not bother her at all. I don't think you should feel at all bad about utilising the container concept for your layouts and only keeping your favourites. Keep digital copies of those you cull, of course!
I really appreciate you applying Dana K White's advice in the craft room setting, as well as the scripture reference.

I am pretty sure I know which creator you are talking about, I watched her videos too! I'm a HUGE fan of Dana, she is such a gifted lady, the way she thinks about things really works for me and thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the addition of the scripture reference. I get that it's not for everyone, but it was very much on my mind when I was creating this video. ❤️

I have been missing your videos but super glad everything has worked out for you and you are settled your room is only slightly bigger than mine and I am in the process of moving back in after painting and carpet. I planned out my room the same way you have but I haven't started purging yet and I know I have to. I am trying to take on board your 'container' idea. It makes perfect sense but purging is so hard. I will take strength from you though. I need to watch this a few more times. ♥

My supervisor is very distracted by the people walking their dogs outside 🤣 I thought about removing the door and maybe putting it in the garage, especially if I can keep that area looking nice and tidy. @CreatedByGwen  4 месяца назад

It's my LEAST favourite part of the process.... I hate putting layouts in albums lolol.. and I find it hard to justify the cost, especially seeing they only fit around 20 pages. I have so so many layouts, I'm going to need to spend hundreds of dollars buying albums to store them in. The other thing that I have noticed over the years is that no-one actually looks at them. No-one pulls out my pages and flips through them... the joy for me really is in the creative aspect. My daughter isn't super interested in looking through the pages. I know she might in the future, so of course I will keep really important pages but there are a lot of pages I just made for fun (re-scrapbooking photos I have done previously) or just to use/try out a technique or product. I can't keep them all forever.

I have been looking to your videos for inspiration to organise and purge....a purge for me is not too far away, l need to be realistic about what l like and don't like.... rewatching Dana K White too may be on the cards. As for the layouts, l have thrown away old layouts from when l started scrapbooking, they were just so ugly. I kept the photos and re-scrapped them 😂 All I'd suggest if you are throwing away beautiful layouts, keep a digital copy, so you kind of still have it in some form. ❤

I have found that about 1/4th of my craft room (and other parts of my home) are filled with completed projects!! They are taking up so much space!... I think I hold on to them like a prized possession (or a loved child!) Not thin scrapbook layouts..... cards, decoupage items, crocheted things, seasonal folios, etc... PLUS, unused craft supplies... So... I can see why you have shared that you might just have to purge your layouts... I know I need to do the same thing and stop worrying about if the recipient will appreciate, or even use the item, or not.!!! The joy is really in the creating, NOT just in the words of appreciation!! So, take pictures of your layouts then put those in a digital album. I will just start.... gifting... then see what I need to do next! Thanks for the advice!

I could never get rid of anything I created. That being said, that's not really a problem I have. I put them all in albums and scrapbook every event and then move on from that event. Throwing away any of them would make the albums and timeline incomplete. I'd only throw something if I'm redoing it because I don't like the outcome.
I'm assuming the majority are like me and this is a very specific issue that only applies to a youtuber / creating team member that promotes stuff that people buy.
As a side note, I'd REALLY like to afford throwing out supplies. The religious argument is defo not talking about buying and throwing and in the same vein could be applied to literally anything, it doesn't really prove a person doing this is not being wasteful. The actual point is NOT having stuff in the first place. It's defo wasteful no matter how you look at it, even if it makes you feel better or makes you have an easier time creating.

    • @CreatedByGwen
      @CreatedByGwen  4 месяца назад +1

Hey lovely... thanks so much for taking the time to write me this message, I love hearing your thoughts. Agree with you about the idea of not buying the things in the first place, that would be the perfect circumstance. Of course, we can look at it so many ways and apply it to many life situations, that's the beauty of the word and why I'll never fully understand it. I can only speak about what I personally get from it and I was just reminded about that verse during this process. I guess the reason I talk about it in a decluttering sense is because for some of us it's too late NOT to buy the things, we (me included) have already gone down that path, so it was more a message about what to do from here and an encouragement that holding onto them won't make you more (or less) wasteful. For me personally, I'd much rather see them in the hands of someone who could use them, I actually found great joy in gifting them to others. xo
