Some notes on the second season:
At one point, Judgement Boy makes the second protagonist choose between a promotion at work or her boyfriend's proposal. In the west, you'd think, "Why not both?" But this is another nod to Japanese culture, as women lose a lot of their individual rights upon marriage. It's not just a matter of being too career focused, it's the reason why women in Japan are largely getting married later and later in life... And the male characters' sexist attitude towards her are reminiscent of the backlash to this. Christmas cakes are often used as a metaphor for a woman's marryable years in Japan, as the cake is considered "Useless after 25."

    • @MaoRatto
      @MaoRatto 2 года назад +24

Doesn't help the population of Japan is declining or people having kids later and later in life. Japan has an overwork problem due to the culture, and I feel like America will eventually have that... America once had it where you were a bread winner and could support a whole entire household comfortably on one workplace and that's it. Japan is objectively more conservative with the BASIC VOCABULARY and CULTURE leaning that way, but only show a more liberal side as it's to remind of a simpler time which is heart breaking, but relatable. There's just a sense of humanity. Judgement boy's split choice reminds me so much of dating these days. Go for promotion for more reward, or lose a lot of rights post-marriage if that said marriage falls through when it comes to money, wealth, and property.... Though the short-term and social status increase on the dating and marriage related stuff. It's simply not worth it anymore if know or learn about the legal system.
The getting married before 25 sort of makes sense on a biological level due to fertility nose dives after 30 and stops on average at 40, some people it's earlier, some it's later. I've seen both examples. I've seen many women who you can't even tell the age of due to looking like 20, but are 30 or 35! Despite looking almost like a pre-college, but post-high school . People are living longer lives, but that's not meaning much if they're not HAPPY lives.

I want to care about relationships, but only feel apathy due to " what's the point in having a connection with a person during the start where they're really good, like top best, but.... Notice a nose dive later on or makes a reason to exploit you more than support where it favors it? ". Despite trying damn hard?

@@MaoRatto That sounds incredibly self-serving. The wall will hit very hard at an early age and *whorseing* it up will turn you into the used up cat lady, since there will always be someone younger. Women can always no fault divorce at any point and ruin the man's life in the process. Everything gets handed to women and they are still unhappy compared to women a century ago without all these "rights".

Okay, the tombstone that is suposed to belong to the Salaryman reads 1933 - 1976, making him 43 when he died. We see that Clock Master's head is set to 1960 in season 1, were people think that guest became the Salaryman. In 1960, he was 27. It could mean that that was the time that his life started the downward spiral that eventually lead him to Gregory House upon his death. Him becoming the Salaryman and becoming a permanent resident could mean that even in death he could not let go of the cycle his life became.

In all fairness to the season 2 backstory, the standards of marriage are very different in Japan than in the west; in particular, at least at the time, a woman accepting a marriage proposal meant she is agreeing to be a stay at home housewife, meaning her deciding between marriage or a career is a literal decision between sacrificing 2 different things that one might desire.

the series' endings are also interesting when you look at the themes for the two seasons:
in the first season, the salesman escapes Gregory House...but finds he's jsut as miserable in reality the tedium is getting to him until he breaks down and returns to the excitement of the gregory house, forgetting his identity in the process.
the second guest has a chance to escape and defeat gregory once and for all...but a moment's fearful hesitation dooms her, as it did at the start of the series. Worst of all, her punishment for her hesitation seems to imply that she becomes gregory's WIFE, so not only is she trapped in the gregory house she's stuck in a relationship with a man she DESPISES.
In the end, the two seasons show the protags done in by their own flaws and end up becoming exactly like the residents of the gregory house, right down to the implications of their bodies changing to match the residents'.

Also remember that these stories were written in Japan were women still are supposed to give up there career after marriage. It's such a big problem with a lot of women refusing to get married or have kids because they refuse to give there careers up. So her reluctance is understandable as although she loved her boyfriend she didn't want to be forced to stay home all day cooking and cleaning.

The reason the clock said 1960 and not 1976 is because Haniwa was 27 at the time, which actually adds more to the ambiguity aspect. 27 year olds are usually always working and not much else, not doing much in life. Haniwa Died at 43 years old, Which is most likely beyond the point that his child is still a baby infant. You could say His life was essentially over at 27 because The last 15 years of his life were the same, monotonous "Work, Eat, sleep, Repeat" until one day he just kicked the bucket. It's more of a vague answer and up to interpretation, which is what good horror does.

Tbh the Gregory Horror Show reminds me of a small tv show from my youth called Pecola. It has the same art style.
    Cubed animals with 2d extensions.
Its kinda jarring seeing these two shows next to eachother. One is an innocent little kids show about a penguin wanting to help people and the other is a horror show on a hotel run by a tired rat.
Edit: oooohhh that makes sense. Its made by the same person! Well... Mystery solved then! But again its jaring to see these two together let alone associate the two.

I feel like the fourth one would've been much better if it focused more on Neko Zombie. Seeing how he's the only one that actually tries to help the guests, is arguably the most sane resident and he also seems to always be a thorn on Gregory's side. (Which is an ironic rivalry between a rat and a cat)
It could've been a prequel of him and his family causing trouble to the hotel by being the only group actually helping the guests cope with their depression. They probably were all still zombies but Gregory pointed out the Neko Zombie used to look beautiful with his fur so it must've been appealing for victims to see.
Maybe each episode has a different family member trying to help but ultimately failing in a horrific manner. (A common thing that happens to Neko Zombie trying to help the first and second guest.)
One could say Gregory must have hired someone to take care of Neko Zombie and his family since they were bad for hotel business.
It's not perfect but it's a lot better than to give the horny pink lizard her own season.

First person horror not only works in gaming(Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Alien Isolation, Dead Space duology, RE7 and RE8, Soma, and LSD Dream Emulator) but in animation. Gregory Horror Show had mastered this technique alongside crude CGI that adds horror intentionally compared to CGI in the 80s(take Dire Straits music videos and Tin Toy for example). Japan's corrupt business work and cheating on love interests really adds up with the protagonists of Season 1 and 2, especially given the diffrenciated personalities of both main characters.
Btw, the best character of this show is Judgement Boy and the whole rapping of Gregory is kinda hilarious in hindsight.

Snice you're on the topic of horror like shows this month. You should see Grizzly Tales For Gruesome Kids. Maybe not as a review thing but it has the same feel of a horror cartoon. Maybe not like this show but it has that same feel.

I remember hearing about the Gregory Horror Show when I was in high school circa 2009. Then seeing it uploaded on RUclips and proceeded to watch all four seasons. The fourth season is by far the weakest but still somewhat enjoyable.

I really did enjoy it but season 4 was my least favorite, since it was just repeating the same joke. It was nice seeing someone do a deeper analysis on the show since it still doesn't appear to be that well known. Keep up the great work!

But seeing how I'm VERY picky with my food 95% of the time I for sure know for a fact that if I was there I'd 100% would've tasseled with Hell Chef on the first night as he hates people who don't like his food! 🔪💢

Grave of the Fireflies is considered a family-friendly shonen anime in Japan.
Barefoot Gen, which is even gorier, is also considered a shonen anime.
Both films were also rated TV-PG in the US, but the UK gives them 12 ratings.
Then again, these are ‘80s anime, when shonen anime/manga can be outright gorefests like Violence Jack, Devilman, and Fist of the North Star. Their modern reboots became seinen because of harsher censorship following the Otaku Killer, and also Dragon Ball making lighthearted shonen more popular.
Then again, darker and more violent shonen is coming back with the likes of Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan.

I know season 2 has a lot of talk about relationships and work, and it is very much in an Eastern setting, you can still apply it to soen western ideas and general advice.
Mostly for relationships, make sure you and your partner know what you both want, what are the non-negotiables, what will you will bend on, and that both of you don't give up something you really want/need for the sake of the relative.
That last one is very important, as almost every argument will eventually circle back to what you feel like you lost because of the relationship.

Its nice to hear an anime not dubbed by Funimation or ADV. Its easy to forget that Canada used to be a massive driving force in dubbing anime.
I think you're better suited for dubbing oddball anime, and not the typical stuff.
I wouldn't want to see you tackle Dragon Ball (that's a half lie, I wouldn't mind it), but shows like Shin-Chan, or Made in Abyss might be right up your alley.

I found this show from youtube recommendation that kept popping up which was the entire third season, but after watching a few minutes I decided to check out the first two seasons (and even the fourth). I enjoy the old playstation cutscene style and the dark morals this show have that since then, I try to recommend to people. Never got to play the game though, always wanted to try but don’t know any decent/trusted emulator that has it.
Definitely a recommend and makes a great October series to watch.

I think the rose metaphor looses because not only is what they're saying untrue for people, but also roses, because if they were still with roots, they would have lived for a long long time, but people don't want roots they don't want to grow a shrub, they just want the beauty without the work, so they let the poor thing wilt into golden thorns...
