I was just going to make that exact comment. It never fails. The people that say "I'm not a racist" are generally the biggest ones going. If you're not a racist you really don't need to make any type of comment. There shouldn't be anything said that would make the other person question if you're a racist or not.

Agreed, but Jeff would have to re-do his advertising and signage. They advertise as 24/7. They would need to specify that towing is 24/7 and lot hours are only xyz. Until then they could be at risk of lawsuit. Additionally there may be county or state laws mandating lot accommodation for those who've been towed.

It’s not racist to recognize patterns of behavior and notice trends. More often than not, it’s dress & demeanor that determines if someone will be suspicious of you, not necessarily skin color. I’ve never seen store employees following around the black guy in business casual attire. Cops aren’t stopping black men in 3 piece suits in the street for random searches.

the management of the apartments is putting you in a bad position by not having their sticker program thought out better. Their stickers should come with instructions as to how and where to afix them, and require writing their license number on it. Problem solved. No sharing, no stealing, no problem. If it's not where it's supposed to be, hook 'em up.

I don’t understand why these people are putting these stickers on mirrors. Most places I’ve ever been where parking stickers were issued, there were very explicit instructions for where it had to be otherwise the vehicle would be towed for no parking sticker. One large furniture store here in High Point was one that is adamant about the parking sticker couldn’t be on the front windshield. It must be placed in the back window and it would only be accepted if it was in one of the 4 corners. Maybe the property manager should issue rules regarding these parking stickers and give everyone 30 days to get compliant. Otherwise that notice can serve as them being trespassed and when they call you to come to tow cars, the local PD can come for those who are trespassing.
When I was at college, we had to pay for stickers and the instructions were explicit as to where it had to be affixed. The campus police were quick to ticket anyone who didn't have it in the proper place. I had the same thing when I worked for a local hospital. You could actually get fired if you got 3 tickets or more.
So they can move one sticker between several different vehicles.

@@jameslovitt994 The point is if the apartments required specific placement... make the people sign an acknowledgement that they've been told and if the sticker isn't where it's supposed to be they get towed.... the sticker sharing problem would solve itself.

The parking situation at this apartment complex is completely out of control. The management needs to make it clear that the sticker needs to be applied in a specific place on the auto. It cannot be shared among multiple vehicles if it is adhered to the vehicle. Make it clear if that is not done the vehicle WILL BE TOWED!

Instead of the parking sticker going on the outside of the window...get the kind that sticks to the inside of the window...can't be stolen if the widws are up and the car is locked.

There's a fix for the pass problem, and it's simple, the parking pass should have adhesive on the window facing side, over the pass details, so they can be affixed to the inside of the windscreen. Then, the apartment complex can make the policy that if the pass is not adhered to the windscreen (front or rear) then vehicle is towed.
I lived in a national park and our resident stickers always went on one spot on the back window and damn they did not come off.

Management needs to set the rules clearly regarding placement of sticker and inform them that if the sticker is not in the correct place adhered to the windshield, it will be towed! I lived at a place where if you did not have it stuck on the windshield upper left side, towed. If you were towed twice, lease violation and your lease was cancelled. They didn’t play. Having said that, they need an area for visitors.

That kid wasn't "never given a parking sticker." He got the sticker but loaned it to a friend, and maybe the friend forgot to give it back. They pass it back and forth. That's why he didn't have it with him.

If they’re really afraid of people stealing the sticker they could just place the sticker inside the windshield and use clear tape and tape it with the sticker facing forward

Setting aside this guy’s poor attitude, one of the things that keeps catching my attention is that it doesn’t seem this apartment complex is setting anyone up for success. I lived in an apartment complex when I was much younger that went through a situation like this, and the first night of tow enforcement was a mess. The second time, the apartment manager was out there every time the tow drivers were working for nearly a month, even at one in the morning, making the final decision on whether or not a car was towed. She told me later that she authorized a no-fee drop exactly one time and it was due to rental car after a car accident. All others who caught the driver had to pay a drop fee and park elsewhere.
Also, permanent stickers? That seems impractical. If someone has one space or two spaces allocated to them, they should be able to use them. Hang tags seem more useful, but maybe I’m missing something. I had to get rental cars on the regular due to my car’s poor health, so permanent stickers would have given me chronic migraines. You guys are doing your job with as much dignity and grace as you possibly can given the circumstances-especially with people saying things like they want to punch you-but it sure seems like the property managers could have made the situation better for everyone.

The problem with the hang tags is that they will share them between multiple cars and take up more spaces than are allotted to them.

I applaud Jeff and Kristen. That kind of tension, confrontation and those threats would have me in a constant state of having a panic attack, raise my blood,pressure and most likely have me in tears. For the sticker issue, I'd just ignore the stickers, and have the owner just phone you with "go get license plate 12345" - you shouldn't have to be searching for stickers everywhere.

It's easier for the apartment managers to say "tow any car without a sticker". If you just assign spots, people will still be parking in other people's spots or people that don't even live there will park there. It's more work for the tenants to have to call management, hope they actually get someone to talk to, complain about a car in their spot, and wait for management to call a tow truck.

One thing that I suggest you make perfectly clear before anyone comes to get their car, they need to know it's cash only. So many people automatically assume that you take credit cards.
We do, they just don’t want to pay with cash because they want to be able to dispute it later.
You know how plausible what they are saying is? They live there, know the rules of having to have a sticker on their windshield and then play musical chairs with the stickers. If I was the manager/owner, I'd have every car towed that didn't have to sticker stuck on the windshield!

At my old job the race card and being accused of being racist was the most common thing. I happened to be the only white person there, so naturally I was accused the most. That shit was toxic. This interaction reminded me of that and makes me glad last Thursday was my last day there.
That being said, I commend Jeff for being so calm there, I would’ve just told the guy to come back tomorrow after he accused you of being racist cause you got their car and not other cars, I’d back the Lincoln in the lot and lock it up and leave without saying a word. Put the phone on silent and sleep like a baby.

I worked many customer service jobs and over the decades got severely burned out with the general public and people in general. I guess if you treat incrates like this guy as the emotional children that they are with a little bit of compassion, it might not be so draining everyday. Thankfully I'm retired and don't have to deal with the bs anymore.

It seems as if apartment management should be responsible for identifying which cars they want towed. I see no reason why it should be your responsibility to check vehicles for management’s stickers. Tow operators should be able to show up and not have to waste time or be involved with sticker drama.
You can't contribute to the problem AND complain about the problem at the same time.

No matter the system in place, people without integrity, will ALWAYS find a way around said system. Sure the better the system the less of a problem however, those few that find a way will be like this example.
Just speaking from experience as a former customer services executive responsible for setting up systems. (Now very happily retired)
Suggestion to the apartment management; don't just mail or hand out stickers, require tennants to allow an employee of the apartments to physically attach the sticker to the vehicles--in the same place on every vehicle.
You need to stop meeting these folks in the dead of night. They can wait until regular business hours the next day.
