    I own the Commando. Let me just say, this watch grows on you like no other watch.

    Jory,
    Excellent video. I am at an impasse deciding between the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical (black dial) and one of these. What is your recommendation? I like the Hamilton brand but this Serica makes it seem very fragile.
    Also; have you heard of the microbrand Traska? I would like to see your thoughts on their field watch, the "Summiteer", on a Microbrand Monday episode in the future. Thanks.

    • @dustycups
      @dustycups 4 года назад

      I have the Hamilton. Realistically neither of these watches are going to be tougher than the other, other than the water resistance difference. They’re mechanical watches with no antimagnetic cage unfortunately - I only discovered how useful that is since getting the Smiths PRS29 which has an iron cage. The Hamilton’s blasted finish will handle scratches better and has some historical lineage. This Serica has a far better looking hand set and does a slightly better job minimising a crowded dial design, as well as having AR coating. The Hamilton has C1 Luminova which isn’t very good but has lume plots at each numeral. I wonder if the screw down crown on the Serica gives it it’s better WR, I doubt that at this price point it is a double gasket design or whatever the good ones use, it probably achieves it in other ways.
      Of the two I’d personally choose the Serica, I only first saw it on this video but I think it looks better. But a Smiths PRS29 beats both of these hands down.

    • @catlike1

      I have the Khaki field automatic which is a bit dressier than the hand-wind mechanical (sapphire domed crystal and a bit of polish on the case). It also has 100 m water resistance rather than the mechanical's 50 m. It does give up the drilled lugs, though.

    Also interesting to note, I read this in a review about the version 2 (WMB 4512):
    “What’s of note here is that Serica has opted to use the barrel of the automatic variant of the STP1-11 movement rather than what you’d find on the hand-wound STP1-11M unit. This protects the movement from being overwound, as automatic watches will disengage the winding gears from the mainspring at full tension.”

Coverage on this brand is minimal which kinda prevent me from pulling the trigger on that sweet thing. Is this a serious company? Can they be trusted? Thanks if you'll take time to read. R

  • @mercoid
    @mercoid Год назад +1

    Just a friendly reminder. It’s Typeface, not “Font”.
    Font is the physical bits of metal, also referred to as “type” (probably the root of most people’s confusion on this) that typesetters rack into an apparatus, apply ink to, and print with. Typeface refers to the design of a given set of letters, numbers, punctuations and symbols.

    • @iainmacadam2119
      @iainmacadam2119 Год назад

      The root of the confusion comes from early Macs using "font" to refer to typeface options, establishing the convention for computing as a whole, which is the only experience most people have with working with type.

    For the price it seems there are better options out there. I have been on the lookout for a 36-38mm Swiss field watch with sapphire, eta movement and water resistance for a while. Just pulled the trigger on The Glycine Combat 6 Classic 3916.17AT-LB7BH - for 290 USD new on eBay. Unfortunately this model is very rare right now. I got the original version after I watched your review of it and have to say that it was the best thing i could have done. I don't mind the mineral crystal and the great amount of AR coating it has. I like the new one but I am glad I got the original with the ETA 2801-2 movement and who needs 200m of WR as the new model has, its a field watch not a dive watch. I believe you forgot to mention the other contention people had was the screw down crown with a manual movement. I love the screw down crown on mine. I always said it screwed down like butter. Great review Jory and thanks for turning me on to Serica. By the way did you ever get your own from the first batch. Thanks again, Brian.

    Guess what the best way to avoid bad threads is.... having no threads! It’s a field watch, why the hell does it need 100m water resist and a threaded crown?? Who is diving with this watch??? And why? Having threaded crowns is so annoying, it makes setting the watch much more trouble and there’s always the risk of eventual thread damage and then what are you going to do? That’s a repair for something the watch does not need because it’s not a diver. Please stop demanding threaded crowns people. It’s a stupid feature on anything that isn’t really going to 100m as an actual divers watch. That’s 328 feet deep! I guarantee you 0.01% of watch owners ever go below 10 feet and actual divers are not buying THIS watch. It’s nothing more than a marketing bullet point.

    The reason for the mineral crystal is they scratch but usually don't shatter. The sapphire crystal would more likely shatter if it got a sharp blow in the field. Your "functionality" comment is kind of backwards if the watch was actually used in the field.
