  • Griffith's speech about friends, and one's dream with princess Charlotte.
    "They are driven to pursue it, and they pursue it solely for their own sake, no other. One man's dream can hold dominion over the entire world, for one who dedicates his life to the forging of a single sword. While many can pursue their dreams in solitude, other dreams are like great storms blowing hundreds even thousands of dreams apart in their wake. Dreams breathe life into men, and can cage them in suffering. Men live and die by their dreams, but long after they've been abandoned, they still smolder deep in men's hearts. Some see nothing more than life and death. They are dead! For they have no dreams.
    ...
    They are my able soldiers it's true, they are dedicated comrades who sacrifice themselves for my dream so that it might be real. But that does not make them friends. In my mind a true friend never relies on another's dream. The man, who would be my friend, must have his own reason for living, beyond me. And he should put his heart and soul into protecting his dream. He should never hesitate to defend it, even against me. For me to call a man my friend, he must be equal to me in all respects."
    Note: I do not own the rights to this.

      What EVERYONE in here misunderstands about what Griffith is saying here isn't that Guts isn't worthy enough to be his friend, but that he keeps EVERYONE at a distance to protect those from hurting his dream and purpose.
      In the assassination plot against count Julius Griffith exact words to Guts were.
      "My Friend, I need you to kill a man for me."
      Clearly Griffith sees Guts as a friend, but he is scared to let Guts close to him because as Griffith points out before the Invocation of Doom at the end of the Golden Age Arc letting people close to his heart is what destroyed his focus on his dream.
      Hence why Griffith keeps Everyone at a distance...

    • @TexasGreed
      @TexasGreed 3 года назад +290

      @@HawkoftheLight1 exactly I've explained it before in another thread. Griffith is afraid of letting a friend close because he knows what it's like to lose men and how it effects him. Remember when the little kid that wanted to be a knight died because he joined Griffith. Griffith literally clawed gashes into his arms just recalling the event. He realizes the potential threat to his dream that friends and equals can be. Griffith definitely sees Guts as a friend and that goes against the mantra that has been keeping his dream alive. So in this scene Griffith is essentially saying it out loud not because he wants to convince the princess, but because he wants to convince himself. He doesn't want to admit that Guts or anyone is his friend or equal so he just keeps repeating his mantra; "they aren't my friends, they are my loyal soldiers. They don't have their own dreams they aren't my equals." It's the perfect self defense mechanism that allows himself to sacrifice the lives of thousands for his ambition alone.

      Not really - you can even see in this video the methaphorical distance between Guts and Griffith, as well as Guts realising that Griffith doesn't consider him a friend (maybe what Griffith saw in Guts was his potential to become one). The day when Guts decided that he will leave the Band of the Hawk, was the day when he started to "work" on his dream, or at very least search for one. "The man who would be my friend, must have his own reasons for being - beyond me. And he should put his heart and soul into protecting his dream. He should never hesitate to defend it - even against me." The defeat of Griffith that day was just that. Well - at least thats how I see it.

      What the God Hand were saying was that everything happens for a reason, and that one cannot escape his fate. Guts happened to be there during his speech, so that he would make him fall later on, to feel desperate, and accept to join the God Hand.

      Griffith has a dream. Guts believes everyone should have the right to a dream. Tyrants have dreams. George Washington and Sensanatus were different though, they dreamed, not that they would be kings; but that they would build a nation in which they wouldn't have to be kings to get what they want. There may be more historical examples of this, but these are the two that I know. Now we all live like kings, and still very few of us know what we want. We waste our lives to indecision. At least Guts and Griffith knew what they wanted.

      @@titusjames4912 Guts also, for a long time, didn't know what his dream/goal was. And he disliked himself for not having any dream, and so he left the Band to find because he really wanted to live upto Griffith's standards. And, yes maybe that was what spurred the realization of his dream/goal of honing his sword skills and protecting the people around him, but him leaving really hurt the people around him and all that because he disliked his life's meaninglessness and didn't have enough self-respect to stand up to Griffith and say how equal he and the other people were to Griffith, because they contributed a lot to Griffith's dream, many even gave up their lives.
      Anyways, maybe the people stuck in indecision (that includes me to some extent) need to realize that while having a big dream is great and all, but not having one doesn't make you any less of a person.
      Being a decent person is good enough and also so important (imo) that it shouldn't be sacrificed for large ambitious and self-serving dreams.

    "For me to call a man my friend, he must be equal to me in all respects."
    And from that point on, Guts and Casca were screwed in every way imaginable. Their entire lives are in shambles stemming from this single speech. But man, this should've raised a red flag, at least in Guts' mind. Griffith was never this open to anyone outside of him and to some extent Casca. But this is where it all started: with Guts unable to read between the lines. Poor guy didn't stand a chance. He was never really adept or interested in court intrigue and politics the way Griffith was, and that worked against him in the end. Great scene.

    • @MrTwrule
      @MrTwrule 4 года назад +160

      If you're interpreting this scene as a mere misunderstanding by Guts of Griffith's deception of the princess, I disagree. Guts already knew that Griffith was willing to manipulate and play dirty to get what he wanted (Guts came here straight from an assassination on his behalf, after all). Whether or not Griffith believed his own words here (or whether Guts took Griffith to believe them), they rang true for Guts, who didn't consider himself worthy of Griffith's (or anyone's) friendship, since Guts knew he had no purpose of his own in life (while having admired Griffith's ambition). It's that self-realization that caused Guts to leave - not any deception on Griffith's part.

      @@cptfreeman8966
      Yes, Griffith is not aware of Guts' presence here; everything he's saying is a performance with the goal of enchanting the princess. He doesn't necessarily believe what he's saying, or if he does, he probably doesn't believe that anyone is truly capable of being his 'equal in every respect'. (He may acknowledge Guts as his equal in some respects, but certainly not in all respects.)
      I think Griffith did realize how much he valued Guts, though it's possible that there was ambiguity in his own mind whether it was purely as a tool or as a friend. It certainly wasn't purely as a friend, or Griffith wouldn't have been so shattered by Guts' departure, since he would have been able to let go like Guts was if that was the case. This proof that Griffith couldn't control such a valuable asset - or perhaps that the person he became dependent on and that he was slowly beginning to understand as more than a mere asset, in a way that productively challenged his worldview up to this point, was suddenly 'abandoning' him - is what broke him. It proved to him that he wasn't in complete control of his own life, and that he never would be. (Unless he became an agent of causality itself, of course.)

    • @masterniles
      @masterniles 10 месяцев назад +7

      Griffith's loyalty to the pursuit of his dream is static, it only falters at times for one person, and that person is Guts. You can see this when he chooses to fight Zodd and tries to save Guts, and nearly dies as a result. When Guts decides to leave the band after the war is won Griffith refuses, it is a stark contrast between their initial fight as Guts is now completely balanced emotionally and confident in his fate while Griffith is unbalanced, angry, impulisve, and questioning his own tactics. Griffith's air of invincibility and mental stability are shattered with his cutlass after the 2nd duel concludes with Guts winning emphatically, in response Guts leaves him not even turning to look back at him or a hysterical Casca who has now shown her true loyalty resides with him. Ego fragmented Griffith sacrifices everything the hawks have won upto this point, to assert his dominance on the princess, and is imprisoned as a result. In the final moments before the eclipse, after attempting suicide and the reappearance of his red beherit, as his blood activates the beherit and eclipse ritual Guts eagerly tries to rescue him, and in this moment Griffith thinks "Don't come near me. Stay away from me... If you touch me now, if you so much as touch my shoulder... I'll never be able to... You and I will never be". In this moment he has his only real friend in the world trying to save him from his own fate, but Griffith finally comes to grip with his fate in this moment, and chooses his destiny. Guts and Griffith were always friends, this can be seen through their time spent together, their discussions, and the actions they undertake for each other, but Griffith never acknowledges it bc he doesn't actually want any friends, he wants to own people's souls. Although Guts was Griffith's muscle he was reliant upon him like no other on and off the battlefield, and Guts always had a dream, that was to find a sense of purpose, and maybe that's not as profound as Griffith's dream, but it's a dream nonetheless. Towards the end of the war he slowly begins to find these things with the other hawks and Casca, but he abandons them bc of what Griffith says in this scene. They were always friends until the events of the eclipse.

He has said and proved multiple times that Guts was important to him, more than most. They met with Guts fighting for his freedom, while everyone else gave Griffith their life freely. "They must defend that dream, even against me." They were friends. But it wasn't like Griffith thought Guts or Casca would be there watching him put on a speech to impress an ignorant princess. And Guts? He never understood why Griffith threw his life away for Guts even against the demon Zod.

    • @kidgrave

      Yup, Guts never understood why Griffith threw his life to save him. Griffith was already seeing Guts as a friend. In general, I think the whole issue of Golden Age is miscommunication and not understanding/apprecaiting the value of the present. Griffith didn't understand that Guts is his friend, and Guts didn't understand that band of Hawk is his home. If only they had more time to explain themselves, talk reflectively about their thoughts the whole situation could be avoided. If they simply talked about what they mean, and why Guts is leaving, they would not end like they did. This always pains me the most. This kind of gives insight on what the ending of Berserk was walking towards. Griffith says that for someone to be considered his true friend, they'd have to persue their dream without depending on him. Guts starte his journey as the black swordmen with he sole intention of getting revenge on Griffith, but as he met new people, his objective became protecting Casca and those close to him. His motivation became separate from Griffith, so i think everything could end up with a final confrontation between them, where Guts would prevail and finish him and the god hand off, while Griffith would tragically acknowledge both of them as equals and above all, true friends, before dying.
    Regardless, that's just one of the possibilities i could think. Even if Berserk is left unfinished, i'll be eternally grateful for Miura's work on this amazing series. It is my favorite manga of all time and will forever be seen as an inspiration for me for years to come. Thank You, Miura.

      the concept of evil is a simple one. it is the sinister and immoral. what is wrong and not is not so easy to see but what makes something evil is simple to me. sth to be evil needs to meet a certain criteria or expectations that will make sth deem evil.
      the act of killing an innocent man is evil
      to rape another is evil
      to manipulate others to do sth against will is evil
      there is a general undertone and expectation to what is evil. when I say sth is evil, people think of it as a negative subject

    I have the theory that Griffin lied in part about this "I have no friends, only my equals can be my friends" speech, and that deep down he sees Guts as his best friend, but he just doesn't want to admit it, for not wanting to lose focus of his dream. I believe that Guts, within Griffin's pack, while standing with Griffin, could even bring him the redemption of his soul. But the moment Guts moves away from Griffin, we see Griffin immediately after he succumbs to his own darkness. It is as if - by losing Guts - Griffin has lost his last connection to his humanity and to mortality. Making Griffin ready for the eclipse.

    What Griffith didn’t realize or say are dreams can become great storms blowing people away or bringing people into it, like a tornado. In a sense of which one’s big dream can inspire others, like the “dead” ones he mentions, to find or follow their dreams to become “alive” again! That’s what happened to Guts in this scene, and to the lots that have been inspired by this. Each in every one of us were born “alive” as children, before we became “dead” to the already flawed system.

      the scene is much more complex than that. his absurd definition of a friend is hinted to be a coping mechanism several times. as it's shown in the eclipse griffith does love and care for his soldiers, who by his own definition are worthy of his friendship as they all do have dreams of their own, as seen in campfire of dreams, however he can't let himself admit that as that would mean that he has been sending his dear friends to their deaths. subconsciously he has no choice but to alienate them and see them as willing tools who are below him. and even then, the one who was by all means but his own his dearest friend didn't pass the requirements to be his equal and his friend, proving once again that he's essentially just playing mental gymnastics to keep himself from breaking down.
      it gets even more tragic when you consider that this tragic fate has been orchastrated by the god that mankind created. if anything griffith is the greatest victim of the story, manipulated by fate itself to fall from the path which would realize his dream through his own skill and talent to rock bottom.
