- A highlight for our crew was filming the midnight Mass at the Vatican on Christmas Eve - which happened to be Pope John Paul II's last Christmas. The vast basilica was packed, the pope seemed radiant, and our cameraman put our viewers right in the front pew. The Vatican is generally a very difficult place for visiting film crews to get permission to do anything. But for some reason, their welcome warmed at Christmas and we found ourselves with a prime spot in the center of St. Peters - midway up the central pilaster under Michelangelo's magnificent dome with a front balcony perch to catch the action.
What you didn't see was 10,000 worshippers tumbling out of St. Peter's at about 1:00 in the morning in the rain. Our crew, about the last people to leave the basilica, was unable to find a taxi, and had to walk through Rome for an hour laden with all their gear to get back to their hotel. I remember watching this Christmas mass. And when they sang the Polish Christmas songs, I broke down. I was raised Polish Catholic, and I knew this was my Pope’s final Christmas. It broke my heart.

He was one of my great grandmothers favourite Popes. She actually met Pope John-Paul. She passed away 2 years before John-Paul II at the age of 102. He will probably be one of the most remembered Popes of our generation and beyond.
I would consider him to be top 3 of all time. John Paul the first would have been a great pope if he wasn't taken out before cleaning up the corruption

It’s amazing he was still willing to say public Mass even when he was obviously in a lot of pain.
Isn’t he lucky.. lived a great life, pleasing to his maker, last days of his life he was surrounded by nothing but holiness and now he’s with him forever. A life well lived indeed.

JP II was my Mom's favorite Pope-how she loved him! I both love & admire him & miss both he & Benedict XVI dearly- The Church's Doctrine's were upheld & defended on a daily basis & no matter the mistake/scandal, one knew that The Roman Catholic Church & The Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ was primary, that it wasn't up for sale or compromise. May God bless both these wonderful Popes, the faithful all over the world, & make us strong for our God & His Truth.

Thank you Rick Steves. Just returned from Italy. Sadly, the lines at St. Peter's were so long, we didn't get inside. This video gives a poignant glimpse of what the basilica is all about. Your books were very helpful planning other parts of the trip.
