Actually, the reason the put him in three separate caskets all welded shut with lead is since the body is stored in a crypt right under the floor, decomposition could cause some unpleasant odors and the like in an indoor environment. So, they essentially make his sarcophagus triple sealed and airtight which pretty much halts decomposition. They do the same thing in the Royal crypts in England.

Being so precise in the burial, can anyone tell me if this preserves the body for years , or centuries, I mean no air would enter, and it's so sealed.
It might depend on embalming and such. Some are preserved by luck. It depends on the embalmer also. What died of. Like edema and diseases. But the zinc or lead liner will keep it airtight as long as those guys did it well enough. We will find out shortly if it did.
The end for all humanity is near...1000 years from today it will be rediscovered.

I wonder what is behind the fabric draped on either side of the tomb.
It covers the scaffolding supporting the mechanical device which lowers the coffin ⚰️ to the sarcophagus which of course is heavy as it's lined with zinc with a heavy lid and welded shut as you can see.
When that thought is not a genuine one,all you do is wonder.

That is not burying?
It's just placing the body in a casket on the floor. The area would stink because of decomposing flesh
It has been placed in a coffin ⚰️ lined with zinc with a heavy lid and welded shut and the sarcophagus is sealed with a concrete slab.
I’ve been to this part of the Vatican! You’d think it would smell awful from all of the bodies and the humidity, but the coffins are so secure and tight that it smells normal. Plus I’m pretty sure the bodies are heavily embalmed.

Indeed you are correct on how well preserved the pope would be. It depends on so many factors but certainly a soldered lead (or zinc) coffin would engender better preservation but that cannot be assured.
Elizabeth was buried in a lead lined, English Oak casket.

not welding... Soldering. .. that is how you seal a Lead lined Coffin. The wooden casket is sealed with the Vatican seal on the ribbons, Then it is placed in the lead coffin, soldered closedand seald agagin with the Vatican seal, then placed in the Wooden Sarcaphogus, then sealed in the marble tomb.... makes it very secure.
