these two brilliant titans of chess are putting on some of the most exciting chess battles of all time. agadmator's commentary is tremendous. i loved the fischer v taminov series and can't wait for what's next. great stuff!
Botvinnik, seeing that far ahead with his knight move, and seeing at the end he'd be up a pawn at the end, simultaneously blew my mind and made me understand why he's always taking so long to make moves. Wowza...
DELAYING THE TAL BOTVINNIK GAMES ONLY MAKES ME WANT TO SEE THEM EVEN MORE; LIKE AN AWESOME TV SERIES, THAT INTERRUPTS AND THE MOST INTENSE PART AND THEN YOU HAVE TO WAIT A WEEK TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! I AM CHECKING MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY IF THERE IS A NEW GAME UPLOADED SO... YOU'RE DOING A TERRIFIC JOB ANTONIO! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
9:58 This is the kind of tactic that I'm trying to get better at. Often times at the GM level they create the position they want through deflection tactics. That's something that most of us lower rated players don't usually calculate very well. If anyone has any suggestions for a great tactics book with this kind of tactics please suggest below. Thanks!
What helps me to quickly see knight moves is to realise a knight always moves from a black square to a white square, and so on. Maybe obvious, but for lower rated players a simple way to avoid devious traps (or make them ;-) )
Yeah we mostly know Botvinnik for his brilliant positional ideas, but he surely could calculate complicated tactical lines with incredible precision, as showcased in this game.
At 19:32 white queen c5 check wins for white, forcing queen exchange ... black can't stop the pawn from queening! Reuben Fine's book on chess endings covers this situation with one pawn and two kings, placing your king on the file next to the pawn file provides the opposition king an escape square, so queening is inevitable unless the pawn is on the A or H file, then there's a possible draw.
19:03 -- Qh7+ is still drawing, as after Ke5, then either Qe7+ (not Qh2+) or just a waiting move of Qh4 (which is perfectly fine because the pawn cannot advance with a piece sitting in front of it). Additionally, even if Tal were to blunder with Qh2+, he can still hold the game, as, with perfect play thereafter, there's no way to advance the pawn beyond the 6th rank (the engine gets very excited, according White a +3.98 rating, but cannot secure a win). 19:14 -- Here, a few more moves along the "blundering" Qh2+ line noted above, the engine actually does find the 0.00 drawing line: Qh6+, and either perpetual check continues with the queen sliding the Qc1 after Kc5, or the White king is safe from check on d5 -- but then the pawn cannot move. Even if Black plays a silly move, such as Qd2, White has no forced winning lines, as optimal lines for perpetual check remain for Black. In fact, Black will almost always have more than one choice of moves that maintain a draw. 20:30 -- Even if White had his pawn on d6 already, he's is not assured of a win if it is Black's move.
14:00 if Botvinnik captured the rook on e5 then I think black would have won because after Nf3 and Kf1 Tal could have moved his knight to h2 attacking the queen and the king at the same time. can someone please correct me if I'm missing something please?
At 17:28, you say that white doesn't gain anything by Qd1, but I think you do. You're guarding both pawns and on your next move you can take the pawn on g4 with check, which means black still can't take either pawn.
Raz0r I don’t have enough time, also after seeing all these games I would be annoyed at how bad I am (I played when I was younger and I’m not a talented player)
Why didn't Botvinik play 59.Qc5+ [20:00] , ofcourse it leads to an exchange of Queens but Botvinik will be a pawn up and he'll queen it easily, forcing Tal to lose the game. Black would only have the move ...Qxc5, or ...Qe7, whill will also end in exchange of Queens I'm just curious why didn't he think about it (:
The white King can sidestep either way behind the pawn and force the black king off the 8th rank, it's just a matter of playing the right moves with the king, and white has a new Queen.
17:44 I would consider this move. You are not only defending your two pawns, but also attacking the g4 pawn, which would come with a check, ain't that good?
This needs some clarification . At 14:03 there is a variation even loosing for white, if King would go g2 after the check on f3 and the rook comes down , Queen check on A6!! lose for white, after double exchange on c4 black is up a whole piece. So white King has to go f1 which tends leads to your variation which would lead to a draw by perpetual. I wrote this because somewhere in the comments I read that after the check and the fork black should capture the queen which is just a bad payoff when there is much more in that position than just a Queens Trade. Botvinnik is not an easy one to fool.
Agadmator, why is game 11 not in the playlist? I watch through the Tal vs Botvinik playlist, and it goes game 9-game 10-game 12. I suggest you fix it. I realy like your channel. Thank you for the videos.
Actually, watching the series to it's end, I have seen that game 11 is situated before game 20. Maybe you ought to set it straight. Thank you for your great effort putting the videos online in playlists.
16:57 imo trying to trade queens with white queen to e2 could be better since the black king would be too far away from the a3 pawn and if black avoided the trade then either white queen to g4 with check if black queen left the diagonal protecting the pawn on g4 ,otherwise white queen to e5 with check, seems to me white would have a better position whether if the black queen goes for the h2 pawn or keeps protecting the d5 pawn. but it s an open board so there are probably a lot more options for black also at 19:29 , wouldnt it be winning for white if he went for a queen trade with white queen to c5 check? if queen trades then black king might not be able to stop the pawn since he s at f8,or if queen blocks, after trading it s white king's move to get a better position to advance the pawn but idk ;)
When tal played queen to e7 during the endgame, botvinnik could have played his queen to e5 with check forcing a trade of queens and his king would end up capturing tal's queen and eventually improve his position and get his pawn promoted ? That move would likely be the best for botvinnik right ?
#suggestion plz show game between anand vs kamsky in 1994 candidates It is pretty complicated and ended in draw. It is also carlsens favourite game of all time
I don´t understand why Tal declined the draw offer. What was his idea? In the end he found himself in a nearly lost position. I wonder what the table bases say about this endgame.
Hello, i love the channel been watching for a couple of months now. I was just wondering If you could do like a stream where you played subscribers. I know you did one in july 2017 and i am wondering if you would do that again anytime soon?
"...losing the Queen, I hope you all saw that." Of course I did. After you pointed it out.
Mikhail Tal once said during World championship "Mikhail is the best chess player"
He also once said "Mikahil will certainly win the 1960 WCC"
and Mikhail actually got 6 USSR Champions title in his entire career

Could u plz explain ur joke? :D
I do not.get it xD

This is amazing!!! and its is even more amazing to those who have read "Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 by Mikhail Tal" you do capture the essence.
i like that you mix modern chess with history. you made the right call

It seems that chess 50 + years ago is more entertaining then chess played today or is it that we just love Tal's style of play?
Jason Z both
Fischer said the same thing
because Tal's crazy sacrifices
Look at deep blue play style. Maybe that will bring back the old play styles :)
YEAH, Agadmator! Make a big AVRO (1938) series, please.
I’m 100% sure I would have miscalculated at least 7 different lines to botch that endgame as black over the last 15 moves.
Just came back from a tournament, and with your videos of the catalan, managed to get 6th place! Not bad for my second tournament

Preet Sanghavi do not copy me as I already wrote the line in a video
Sharayu Palit well I wish I had read that duh
Preet Sanghavi no problem :)
Just finished reading the chapter of Tal's book about this game, and lo and behold, this video comes up next on autoplay.
19:13 when I play chess 😂😂
Happy Easter man! thanks for the upload
Yeah we mostly know Botvinnik for his brilliant positional ideas, but he surely could calculate complicated tactical lines with incredible precision, as showcased in this game.
Tal and Botvinnik were really excellent players, so this was an exciting championship match!
3:47 the smile is priceless my friend, but the fact that I didn't see that lol !
As always the in depth analysis of a classic chess against titans the battle may have gone differently with one move.
I love g3! Trapping Black's Queen. I've played that several times against the Budapest Gambit.
Tough game tight game Fantastic well played from both legends Thanks Agadmator

I appreciate coverage of all the other happenings in chess. Keep it up.
Game 11 was hard to find! It is not in the right order.
what about 5:11 BxC4 followed by Ba5, white's would be up in the exchange ?
yeah I thought the same, stockfish agrees:
17. Bxc4 dxc4
18. Ba5 Ne4
19. Bxb6 Qxb6
with a final evaluation of +2.7 in favour of white
I rather watch old games when there's no tournament going on. It feels like I'm resting while watching old legends
How about covering the championship series between Kasparov and Karpov after Tal and Botvinnik series?
Love how the a file is now the f file 4:20

You are correct.
That caught my eye too.
Daniel Sebastian yes but pawn could capture blacks queen so black would win a pawn but against double rooks
1 year later, agreed.
At the time of 20:08 why bothnik gave check on c5 for trade of queen
Agadmator I dare you to to another chair intro btw you are the best chess channel
At approximately 17:45…would it have been helpful for Botvinnik to go with Q to A1 to protect both pawns…and potentially gain another Q?
The way you show the link is awsome...
Hi agadmator. At 14:09, you have shown Qa6. Why not Kh2, forking the black’s King and Queen?
*correction: white’s King & Queen?
Impressive calculation by both of them. No shot I spot that Bishop h5 move from a distance.
22:16 Why queen to a8 I think queen to c5 is wining game for white! If not please explain in the replays!
3:43 Agad: I hope everyone saw that
Me: 👀
At 17:28, you say that white doesn't gain anything by Qd1, but I think you do. You're guarding both pawns and on your next move you can take the pawn on g4 with check, which means black still can't take either pawn.
Enjoying this master piece now it's may 29th 2022

You should show a game with Wei Yi, maybe Alexei Shirov vs Wei Yi
14:07 wasnt Nxh2 winning the queen?
Lol
Why didn't Botvinik play 59.Qc5+ [20:00] , ofcourse it leads to an exchange of Queens but Botvinik will be a pawn up and he'll queen it easily, forcing Tal to lose the game.
Black would only have the move ...Qxc5, or ...Qe7, whill will also end in exchange of Queens
I'm just curious why didn't he think about it (:
After Qc5+, Qxc5+, dxc5, Ke7 and black can stop the pawn and force a draw
My observation also ... don't know why this was missed, it's quite obvious.
The white King can sidestep either way behind the pawn and force the black king off the 8th rank, it's just a matter of playing the right moves with the king, and white has a new Queen.
Mehmet Akın gururlandım kardeşim
At 19:28, why didn't Botvinnik play Qc5+? It will force the trade of queens and he can probably win the game from the pawn+king endgame
@8:52 after Nc7, why not Re7 ???
Where is game 11?
At 15:56 why not take the black rook? It looks like the king can escape.
17:44 I would consider this move. You are not only defending your two pawns, but also attacking the g4 pawn, which would come with a check, ain't that good?
Why is Queen to c5 not working at 19:43???
This needs some clarification . At 14:03 there is a variation even loosing for white, if King would go g2 after the check on f3 and the rook comes down , Queen check on A6!! lose for white, after double exchange on c4 black is up a whole piece.
So white King has to go f1 which tends leads to your variation which would lead to a draw by perpetual.
I wrote this because somewhere in the comments I read that after the check and the fork black should capture the queen which is just a bad payoff when there is much more in that position than just a Queens Trade.
Botvinnik is not an easy one to fool.
RipperMatricus But what happens after the Knight fork, instead of capturing the Queen immediately, Qxf2+ followed by Nxg3.
Queen Tradeoff plus 3 pawns for black
That’s my point. It’s winning for black.
You forgot the link to the Botvinnik-Capablanca game in the description. Imma find it, but just saying
True, fixed it. Thanks :)
Of course, it turns out I had seen it. And obviously, I watched it again. What a game, what a move
16:57 imo trying to trade queens with white queen to e2 could be better since the black king would be too far away from the a3 pawn and if black avoided the trade then either white queen to g4 with check if black queen left the diagonal protecting the pawn on g4 ,otherwise white queen to e5 with check, seems to me white would have a better position whether if the black queen goes for the h2 pawn or keeps protecting the d5 pawn. but it s an open board so there are probably a lot more options for black
also at 19:29 , wouldnt it be winning for white if he went for a queen trade with white queen to c5 check? if queen trades then black king might not be able to stop the pawn since he s at f8,or if queen blocks, after trading it s white king's move to get a better position to advance the pawn but idk ;)
Off from work today finally so able to respond to notification almost immediately, life is good
This is better than Netflix
Please brother, make more videos that is covering Alexander Alekhine games.
Yes he should
At 18:15 why doesn't white take the pawn with the queen?
a small request can u make videos on kasparov vs vishy the 1990's classicial game
Stockfish says 31... Reh4 is crushing for black (-9.5). Did i miss something or did Tal?
These two Masters played some of the best games ever played ! They really know how to play chess ,,, incredible really,,, 😁🖒✌♕♔
19:57 what if white queen goes to c5 forking the queen and king forcing black to recapture will that result in a win?
15.59 f3 is not played to make room for rook, but to prevent mate, right?
When tal played queen to e7 during the endgame, botvinnik could have played his queen to e5 with check forcing a trade of queens and his king would end up capturing tal's queen and eventually improve his position and get his pawn promoted ? That move would likely be the best for botvinnik right ?
Tal seems to favour the thematic idea of having his bishops pointing menancingly towards the enemy King--"Tal bishops"
can you cover the interzonal match of b.fischer?

Nice Video!
I don´t understand why Tal declined the draw offer. What was his idea? In the end he found himself in a nearly lost position. I wonder what the table bases say about this endgame.
How many points do you need to win the championship?
#Question - Is the use of engines by the top players causing an increase in diversity of opening moves, or a decrease?
Agadmator is lost here 😂😂 8:58
19:28 Qc5 check? I know I must be missing something.
Then will be a draw bcs b King is faster then W King to stop The pawn
Hello agadmator .plzz suggest nd made a separate video for best books for chess
@12:42; wouldn't it be better for White to play Q×h6 instead of Q×d2
If the queen captures the rook, then the knight was going to capture the white rook on f1 and black is up the exchange..
Yo am I crazy or was Rh4 winning after Rf1 at 15:50?
Definitely crazy

Can't you just win the queen with g3 here? I don't see the point of all the trickery.
I don't understand the triangulating move thing at the end can you explain? It's still tals move after queen checks at d5
lol hes going insane
I think botnovik defence is the best against the magician tal.. I love the match of tal and botnovik
When will carlsen play vs caruana
Hello, i love the channel been watching for a couple of months now. I was just wondering If you could do like a stream where you played subscribers. I know you did one in july 2017 and i am wondering if you would do that again anytime soon?
31.Rf1 was a losing move, but Tal played Re1, not noticing Reh4!
Also, I wonder why did Botvinnik play 21.g3, instead of naturally looking Nf3.
20:50 How is that not winning for white?
Can black draw the game with just the king?
I was thinking the same, it is pretty much a win for white.
18. 16 why not queen capture pawn?
Because of Qxd4 and that would again be a draw
This might be the only (slightly) careless analysis you've produced :)
