This is a surprise! I thought the Blondie version was an original. But I ❤ this original, it's so spirited and the arrangement is spectacular! I think the Nerves win!🎉
What you have to realise is Blondie had big bucks for studio time. This band went in with a terrific lyric and a great addictive track. Thanks to Bomp Records also. If you can cut a track under those circumstances that is sublime as this you must be good.

The Nerves were SUCH a great band. Years ahead of their time! The EP that Hangin On the Telephone came from was a real classic, featuring When You Find Out and other classics. Some people thought Blondie wrote this song, and sure, they did a great cover, but Jack Lees The Nerves were real new wave innovators of the early 70s. Listen to this track and the heart and soul in Jacks vocals.
You see the difference that all that practice did for Blondie to make it super tight and radio ready. Personally, I'm more a fan of the ramshackle feel, but both are fantastic. Reminds me a bit of The Replacements, who also had a penchant for great ramshackle pop.

I first heard about The Nerves In a book that I won on CBC Radio3 about the band's days as a Yonge St. heavyweight before their return to California, and the Plimsouls era, Liz Worth's Treat Me Like Dirt, about the first wave of Punk in Toronto,1977 -1981.
There's a version of this sung by Melissa Rausch playing harley Quinn in the new cartoon Batman and Harley. She sings it "in-character" as Harley Quinn. It's outrageous!

The Nerves played a set for us in Pacifica’s Oceana high school cafeteria to audition to play our senior (or was it junior? wtf do I know, I was a stoner) prom during 5th or 6th period. Mostly everyone was in class at that time, but not us hard rockin’, class-cuttin’ stoner folk! I’m embarrassed to admit, but we laughingly mocked The Nerves as they played by immaturely ‘pretend screaming’ like female Beatles fans did a decade earlier. We had never heard of this punk rock/new wave stuff before and we thought this was some kind of joke. (Keep in mind Freebird was the school’s anthem at the time, OK?) Anyway, they didn’t get the gig. 😑 MANY years later, I’m hearing this song with a more mature ear and broader musical taste and appreciating it for it’s catchy pop hooks and ingenuity. It didn't have the hallmarks of a written-for-a-movie song. This recording is also a great example of instrument isolation, with each instrument comfortably within a frequency band, and musicians who support each other with terse playing. The guitar doesn't step on the vocals at all, while having a good fill in the regular meter, the bassist just goes and the drummer supports him; the lyrics are strong and well delivered with good choices on the gang vocals and double vocal tracks
