- A drive across the new Tappan Zee Bridge, officially the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge which carries the NY State Thruway over the Hudson River in Tarrytown, NY.
Filmed: November 2022
From Wikipedia:
The Tappan Zee Bridge, officially named the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, is a twin cable-stayed bridge spanning the Hudson River between Tarrytown and Nyack in the U.S. state of New York. It was built to replace the original Tappan Zee Bridge, which was located just to the south. The new bridge's north span carries the northbound and westbound automobile traffic of the New York State Thruway, Interstate 87 (I-87) and I-287; it also carries a shared use path for bicycles and pedestrians. The south span carries southbound and eastbound automobile traffic.
The process to replace the original bridge kicked off in 2012, with construction on the new spans beginning by contractor Tappan Zee Constructors in 2013. The Left Coast Lifter (one of the world's biggest cranes) was instrumental in the construction of the bridge. The north span officially opened to westbound traffic on August 26, 2017, and eastbound traffic temporarily began using the north span on October 6, 2017. Contractors then began demolishing the old bridge. An opening ceremony for the south span was held on September 7, 2018, and traffic started using the new span three days later.
The bridge's official name, commemorating former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, has been controversial since its announcement. A petition and several pieces of proposed legislation have sought to restore the bridge's name to that of its predecessor.
Thank you for using its real name.
I am assuming you are referring to "Tappan Zee"?
@@shaynestephens Yes.
Everyone calls it the Tappan Zee bridge. It's just like everyone still calls RFK Bridge the Triboro Bridge.
This is exactly what I was looking for being a simple crossing of the completed bridge on a beautiful day. Thank you!
You should check this bridge out at night time
It will show the cool version
Back in the '70s and early '80s we drove on this bridge on the way to NYC from Toronto..
Thanks for calling it the Tappan Zee Bridge and not the other name
Oh yeah I heard the locals don’t care for the “official” name.
@@MileageMikeTravels We don't, but the bridge is nice 👍. The old one was interesting but it was getting crumby. The new bridge also has a bike path that connects Tarrytown and Nyack. Very nice experience
@@retroking59 It is strange, how they had to replace one of the "newest" bridges across the Hudson River first. The Bear Mountain Bridge (the next bridge north of the Tappan Zee) will be 100 years old in 2024.
Bridges Across The Hudson River:
Rip VanWinkle - 1935
Kingston Rhinecliff - 1957
Mid-Hudson - 1930
Newburgh-Beacon - 1963
Bear Mountain - 1924
Tappan Zee - 1955/2017
George Washington - 1931
A natural three-mile-wide section of the Hudson River. It derives its name from the Tappan Native American sub-tribe of the Delaware/Lenni Lenape, and the Dutch word "zee" meaning a sea.
This is the first time I rode over the new Tappan Zee Bridge.
I always go on this bridge and it lights up at night it’s so cool and it connect WestChester county and Rockland county
Cashless, no stop tolling has definitely helped the traffic flow.
Oh yeah for sure
Thank you for using the Tappan Zee Bridge name on your stream. I don't like the new name of it. It will always be TZ to me.
As much as I hate going over the Verrazzano, nothing terrified me as much as driving on the original Tappan Zee back in 2010. I went over the replacements going both directions in 2019, and as much as I hate bridges, I actually felt safe.
Pretty Bridge 🌉 Real Nice Lite Up
Such a nice bridge
🚗🚚⛵ good day all👍 mom and I was on it a few times not a bad bridge to cross 🚗 happy their put it back to the Tappen Zee then Coumo bridge half the people still used the original name Like the Meadowlands or Giants Stadium don't call it MetLife much better when New Jersey decided to Byne for ex governor
I used to drive from Long island to Rockland County to visit a girl every weekend for 2 years while they were building the new bridge. Stuck in traffic for HOURS.
Then we broke up and they opened the new bridge 7 months later and I hit her with that "hey" text just so I could drive across the bridge lol
LOL!
Hey, have you ever driven on the original cantilever Tappan Zee Bridge before its closure in 2017?
...yes numerous times..
I have dozens of times. I'm originally from the Hudson Valley. I have been over AND under it.
@@shaynestephens Did you ever experience the vibrations that people claimed?
This was my first time in NY.
@@MileageMikeTravels Nice, I haven't visited New York State yet, but I'll probably check it out when I have free time from work.
A fact I always appreciate: The Tappan Zee Bridge was located 25 miles north of the Statue of Liberty so it wouldn't come under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
What would happen if it were under their authority?
Generally intra-state bridges don't fall under the jurisdiction of PANYNJ. In fact, I can't think of a single intrastate bridge or tunnel that is controlled by PANYNJ. The Queensboro, the Triboro, Marine Parkway, Verrazzano-Narrows, Pulaski Skyway, Cross-Bay Veterans, Casciano, Whitestone, Throgs Neck, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Driscoll bridges are all owned and operated by intrastate authorities like NJDOT, NYSDOT, & the MTA.
Love these videos! Just curious if you mount your camera inside or outside the car?
Brings back memories. The Hudson Valley is very nice. Do you do scenic drives?
Sure. You have some recommendations in the area?
@@MileageMikeTravels I remember the drive up to Sleepy Hollow was pretty nice but if you're heading back down to the New Jersey area go over to the Pennsylvania side and drive down 611/32/River Road from Easton to Washington Crossing PA. Also try the Blue Ridge Parkway when ever you get down south.
Nice bridge
There's a terrytown in Louisiana too
No "Terrytown" here it is "Tarrytown"
@@jamessambets6116 ok
Nah, still Tappan Zee Bridge.
This is gov mario coumo bridge
