In Japanese culture, white is also a color that's highly associated with death. Yuki's clothing, her makeup, her name-they all suggest innocence and purity, but in reality she's a harbinger of death in plain sight.
Yeah i was unpleasantly surprised to see this video focus more on the Western interpretation of the color white when......this is a Japanese movie. And the death association of the color white is extremely prominent in Japanese culture in general and an obvious aspect of this story in particular. But the video creator completely skipped it in a way that makes me wonder how much they actually know.
Interesting she is an omen of death here as her kimono 👘 is worn with an "inverse y pattern" on the neckline. The appropriate way to wear a kimono is left drape over right to make a "y" neckline, unless the individual is dead, or a mirror image.
I discovered you within the last two weeks and I absolutely adore the content you’ve been putting out, even if I personally have never interacted with the original works. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your views!
While the link between snow and purity is not wrong, the color white, especially in clothing, is associated with death, not purity in Japanese culture (all East Asian culture, really). White has taken on a Western meaning in modern Japan, but not entirely. For example, while funeral attendees in Japan dress in black nowadays, the person being cremated is still usually dressed in white. Even though Japanese brides today often wear white for the same reason why Western brides do, it used to be red, symbolizing happiness, just as the Chinese still do; white would traditionally be inappropriate for a wedding because of its association with death. We can still see the traditional association between the color white and death in Asian horror films (such as Ringu); note that all these ghosts are almost always dressed in white. Inasmuch as the film was made in the Showa era, and depicts the Meiji era, it might not be entirely wrong in interpret it as symbolic of purity, as you have, but it was more likely intended that Yuki is dressed in white because she is the personification of death hunting down those who wronged her family.
I loved watching thismovie back in 2002/3 when tarantino named his references for killbill. and i remember having the manga art on my myspace… beautifully dark and deep emotional memories
You should definitely look into Tomie by Junji Ito I think that it is right up your alley and touches on victim blaming and struggles that women and girls and multiple sides of beauty, all illustrated through a horror lense. It gets better with each chapter and entry because he worked on it sparsely for many years. I’m pretty sure there is around 17 chapters. I would not be surprised if you have heard of it or even read it already so I want to apologize if you have already made a video on it and I have just accidentally skipped over it. Anyways I hope you have a amazing new years
Thanks for the suggestion. ☺️🙌🏻 I was going to make a video on Tomie, but I feel like there’s a lot of videos already covering her or Junji Ito in general.
I love the symbolism in this film especially with color. I love these types of films because it makes you look deeper. Many people would just see it as a revenge film but with the use of color, fashion and characters it tells a lot more. I always look forward to seeing your videos and appreciate the amount of time and dedication you put in looking past the surface.
@@yilyauwtf? Do you get that type of comments? Just forget it girl, your voice gives such a nice and calm feeling. Btw, i kinda like that you don’t show your face (yet i’m curious a bit😂) but i can understand and see that you give a great caution of your video essays because of your aim is analyzing
I would love to hear your analysis of the first season Blue Eyed Samurai. I bet many of the the themes in the show are homage to Lady Snowblood and films like it.
I'm kind of a right of center kinda guy, most YTers I follow tend to have some conservative views and alot of them actually said they have enjoyed the series. I watched shorts but watching this made me think of Blue Eye Samurai. From what I've seen it has potential.

Red is also a sacred colour in Japan... and east Asia. It's a colour of protection, It's seen in shrines, and weddings.
Yeah, true. Red and the shades/hues of red have significance in even Hindu culture.
I read it red represents the color of the Hero/Victor while France has the color of piss lol.

This film definitely strongly influenced Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai. Great video
