  • We are back to Gil Bennett's Sn3 model railroad as he shows us his technique for painting model railroad backdrops. As we move toward painting our own backdrop for our 1:20.3 model railroad, we have been picking the brains of some of America's best artists who paint model railroad backdrops.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Gil has offered a FUN workshop at train shows where he teaches a simple system for painting your own backdrop.

Not only is Gil a great artist, he is also a great teacher! He has some great ideas and tips, to make a railroad backdrop really work! I was thinking that the backdrop had to be just like a painting! Well... Not necessarily so! The backdrop is there to add dimension and depth to the model railroad.. But the focus should be on the trains!
His depiction of the high mountain dessert is so perfect.. It makes me homesick for the area where I grew up! Lots of mountains and hills, outlined in pine, juniper, aspen, and sage brush. His way of painting clouds really works well... The use of brushes and fingers really makes for a realistic scene!
Thanks Gil, for letting us come, and see your work!! :D :D

Oh wow... I didnt know this video existed, forgive me for my last comment regarding who to goto for landscape paintings. This gentleman is incredible, I've seen his artwork around and I want to say I have a calendar of his. I think I do... Anyways, just wanted to apologize again. You have a great mentor, hopefully he can help you with your Mountains and everything else art related.

It's nice to see he has the same enthusiasm he had years ago. Also folks may not know HE helped raise money to bring the lady back to life, 1990, this was when the experts said it was impossible. Gil was a believer, many thanks to him to help restore, 3rd most powerful passenger steam engine, Spokane Portland & Seattle 700. (Conservatively behind NP A4, Santa fe 2900s, NW J class, C&O 614)

Beautiful work! In addition to brushes, I also use improvised tools such as sponges, toothpicks and pieces of fabric to add texture to my paintings.

OUTSTANDING! Need we say more? It all comes flushing back from background painting for Drama class. Well, that's what the report card said. A young lady was suddenly struck ill and hospitalized and I was drafted to finish her backgrounds for the props in a High School play. Volunteered by my 11th grade illustration instructor. Gil is such a pro. Someplace I have a calendar or two he has done. It's Gil Reed I have signed prints from. Gets confusing. I'll be honest if the guy running the camera didn't know what he or she was doing the subtle effects would not have showed as well as they did. This one is a Keeper. Kudos. Greg and Jeanne

I lovve his horizon line system!!!!! Almost no one does that and look how that helps blend the BG into the layout.

what I love about his railway is it's about the trains. That other layout you visit often, that village one, is great but the trains aren't really important. A layout should look realistic as possible but it's all about the trains

Again thanks for a great informative video. I have been wanting to paint a backdrop to photograph some of my weathered rolling stock and I think I am going to use Mr. Bennett's technique to produce something to help me get better photographic images.

I love the painted backdrops. Photo backdrops are fine too, but a good backdrop really improves a layout.

Excellent. Yes, it seems easy. But last time I tried an easy method, I wasn't able to adapt it to my model.
But I may try it, when I would have finished other projects.

Thanks Dale for posting this. Gil is an amazing talent and truly inspirational. One question , was Gil using oils or acrylics?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  6 лет назад +1

acrylics. super cheap acrylics, $1 per bottle. AND good paint! He uses oil sometimes in painting, but not on his backdrop.

Gil's hair is not as cool as Bob Ross' fro, but he makes the whole thing look as easy as Bob did. I just wish it was as easy for me, as they make it look.
