Actually a red hot iron is indeed an infrared transmitter. For the shown tool there are indeed 2 ways to transfer heat, the main one is infrared radiation and the second one is convection - tool heats up air - air heats up the PCB board (the one that you suspect). However, in this case the main way is still infrared. For a hot air tool the main way is convection and for a standard soldering tool is direct contact.
@@danieliliescu2141 your reply just made everyone reading this stupider than before they read it. Google induction vs. Infrared heat friend. Dont reply until you do your homework.
@@GASSmallEngine I don't think that few words will make anyone "stupider", maybe they will just feel like this, but there is no need, nobody knows everything. Stay assured that my homework is long done. Induction is totally out of question, that one is used to heat metal only elements by inducing an electric current into them. There are 3 ways to transfer heat from one body to another. 1)Direct contact, when these 2 bodies are in contact. 2)Convection, when the the hot body heats the air and the air heats the other body. This is how radiators work. 3)Radiation - this is the most interesting one, even if we met it day by day. Radiation is the way through which the Sun warms the Earth because definitely there is no direct contact between them and also there is no air between them for the convection to take place. So radiation does not need something material between the 2 elements in order for the hear to be transferred, which is definitely pretty magic. However this is pretty easy to replicate, just heat up a needle into a flame, any red and white hot bodies will emit thermal radiation, a part of it being in the infrared spectrum. See Wikipedia for Thermal radiation. So having an incandescent element will definitely create infrared radiation. Now that there are some other ways to create infrared radiation, I do not disagree, but definitely anything that is heated to read or white will emit infrared radiation and this will be its main way to transfer heat to other elements nearby.
@@danieliliescu2141 And you can have an induction heater with DC, at least if you keep the object you are trying to heat still. To have current inside the object, who has to be a conductor, you need a variable magnetic fields ... the only way you can do that with DC is moving the object very rapidly. So, induction is still bullshit as you already say.

That is NOT the result you want when soldering to, or removing a soldered component from a board. There is a reason soldering irons are made the way they are instead of like yours.
