      Meredith got ALL the power and privilege this company wanted. Talking about the MAID having a drinking problem. She could have had a raging drug problem and management would have loved her even more. Sanders was totally screwed. If I was in his position, yes, I would have allowed myself to become corrupted and joined RIGHT IN with top management ranks. Meredith was positioning him to JOIN the TOP. Literally positioning, I guess. Doesn't change the fact it was morally wrong, and we see Sanders come out at the end with family and the TRUE way to rise. The right way.

    • @PolishKnightUSA
      @PolishKnightUSA 3 года назад +11

      What I found amusing about that scene, at the whole movie really, was how it cleverly exposed political correctness using its own tropes. Douglas's (female) lawyer saying that the system was going to defeat him even as in an ordinary sexual harassment case this would be a slam dunk exposed the double standard hypocrisy of feminism both in terms of how his character was told he was powerless AND his lawyer really needed Douglas to solve his own case for himself.
      Feminists hated this movie. They also hated falling down. And War of the Roses.

      @PolishKnightUSA : That isn't true feminism. True feminism is to fight to raise the visibility of women and not lower the visibility of men. The two can coexist. You don't allow any woman to rise in ranks. You allow the best woman to fit the position to rise in the ranks.

    This whole movie is terrific - beautifully written, designed and acted. But it didn't get rave reviews at the time of its release 16 years ago. Michael Douglas and Demi Moore are fine, compelling actors.

    Couple of things. #1, had Sanders not seen Blackburn talking with Meredith in the gym as well as getting emails from Kaplan's son, he might not have had the foresight to investigate things further. #2, the beauty of this movie was a woman scorned ended up getting her comeuppance. In the book, she got her position in Digicom because she was having an affair with one of the CEO's who were going to buy the company so instead of being content of besting Sanders by being his superior in a position Sanders thought he was going to get, she decided to be Capt. Ahab and set to destroy him which ended up sinking her. This is a very underrated movie.

      @@martindebrois1472 No, the whole sexual encounter was planned by her to get him out of the company so she could blame him for the changes that were problematic that she made without his approval. She wanted to get away with it simply so she wouldn't be thrown out of the company and bear the responsibility of killing the merger that she was trying to put together. It's also implied that she was jealous and wanted Sanders position for herself and cutting costs to make the company look profitable was the perfect excuse to take over that position.

    This was a beautiful way to slam the door shut. The character portrayed by Demi Moore believes they have all the cards in their favor, and that the outcome was going to be a blindside slam dunk to destroy the credibility, and future of Michael Douglas' character.

    Well done.

    • @SuperChuckRaney
      @SuperChuckRaney 6 лет назад

      Well, it is just a movie, but as far as if it was real life, Demi can negotiate all she wants, she isn't the head of that division.
      For instance Micheal knows level 5 air handlers are not good enough BUT STILL he allows them to be installed??
      Micheal knows that the chips are now being installed by "thumb" and he fully well knows that that will lead to the problems he has ??
      The issue here is Micheal not following thru on his responsibility, not that Demi sabotaged that plant by diving in over her head (which she did).

    • @TroyaJamilyn
      @TroyaJamilyn 6 лет назад +7

      I'm not so sure I agree with your analysis. During this scene, Meredith states that Tom wasn't informed of the changes to the product line because those decisions were "over [his] head." So Tom didn't allow them to be installed -- they were installed without his knowledge or approval despite his plan calling for Level 7 handlers and automatic chip installers. Tom had to investigate to find out the reasons for the problems. He was indeed following through with his responsibility, but part of the sabotage was to have him tangled in a completely different matter (the sexual harassment claim) so that he would be distracted from the real problems at hand.
      Yes it's just a movie, but it's a pretty accurate depiction of corrupt, evil practices of the people in charge of corporations -- especially technology companies.

    sexual harassment is prevalent in our society. Those in power pray on those who are not. We just never hear about men who are the subject of such harassment because our society has mostly men in power. But it definitely happens and it should be stopped. No one should feel uncomfortable going to work. We are all just trying to make enough money to buy chicken nuggets and pay rent.

      The actors name is Dylan Baker.
      Wikipedia :
      On September 1, 2015, Dylan Baker tried to save the life of his neighbor, Broadway and movie actress and dancer Vivien Eng, in the high-rise where he lives in New York City when her apartment caught fire but was driven back by smoke and fire. Firefighters eventually got the seriously injured woman out of the apartment and rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, her injuries were too severe and she succumbed to her injuries 2 days later.

    I LOVE this movie. I've worked in corporate world and know what it's like. My only question about this movie, who wanted "Tom" (Michael Douglas out)? Meredith was used as a weapon against him but who really was behind this whole fiasco? Was it his boss?

      She wanted him out

    • @jsimmons12
      @jsimmons12 6 лет назад +2

      If I remember right, Garvin wasn't particularly interested in Tom being out so much as he wanted Meredith to lead the new division and be a shining example to gender equality at his company.
      Honestly, it's been so long and I'm not even sure if I'm deriving my facts from the book or the movie (I enjoyed both). So take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.

    • @craig2469
      @craig2469 6 лет назад +1

      Remember Garvin specifically wanted a woman for this VP position . Plus he said Meredith was instrumental in making the merger possible. At least that was the reason they gave Tom for passing over him.

    • @Kilrayen
      @Kilrayen 5 лет назад

      It's actually much more complicated than that.
      Garvin wanted funding, so he sent out Meredith to find some, and Meredith got Conley-White. Garvin's protege had been Tom, initially, until Tom and Meredith broke up and Tom went to Seattle, leaving Garvin who took that as a betrayal (see Max and Tom's conversation). Garvin's daughter died, Meredith took over her place(and effectively Tom's), Garvin used Meredith to get funding, and Meredith tried to cover up her long demonstrated incompetence by making Tom the fall-guy, and Garvin was indifferent as to whether Tom got fired or not as long as he got Meredith to get Conley-White in, regardless of how she did it. He does the same to Blackburn, but turns his back on him when Blackburn's leak of the story to the press causes more damage to the firm than to Tom.
      The book has a lot of themes, and it requires careful reading and analysis to determine exactly who wanted what, and who were really the most egregious villains. In my opinion, a lot of people are equally guilty, including Tom himself (see Max's dialogue about how Tom subconsciously wanted to punish Meredith for her infidelity).

    • @Kilrayen
      @Kilrayen 5 лет назад

      @Pat Morris no he did not know the specifics, he just told her to get it done no matter what. He does the same with Blackburn, but when Blackburn leaks the story as an on the record source for Connie Walsh, he gets screwed over by Garvin for doing something like that. He does the same to Meredith. Garvin doesn't care about details, just like every other bad manager, the entire point of making Meredith his protege was not that she tried to look like his dead daughter, but it was because he hoped his daughter would one day replace him or be a big corporate honcho, and since that didn't happen he used Meredith instead, but had no affection for her otherwise.

Usually in films, male abuse is sold as 'funny' such as butt rape jokes. I must watch this film again, its been years.
