    *UPDATED, SCROLL DOWN FOR BASKET VENDOR* I used the forum post below to get non-pressurised filter baskets. Sadly, the items in question have been removed.
    coffeegeekDOTcom/forums/espresso/machinemods/719963
    However, my current non-pressurized double shot basket shown in the video I bought here (the europiccola post-1998 51mm): vanpommerenDOTnl/la-pavoni-2-kops-filterbakje-europiccola-professional-na-1998?search=Pavoni
    I see they have a SINGLE SHOT version too: vanpommerenDOTnl/la-pavoni-1-kops-filterbakje-europiccola-professional-na-1998?search=Pavoni
    I know the website is in Dutch but I am sure that if you contact in English them by email, they will guide you through the payment and shipment process> infoATvanpommerenDOTnl
    I have called them before on my purchase and they were very friendly.
    Shout out to instagram coffeelover sara331 for asking me about this 🙌

    That steam tip at 7:35 is golden. I was going to buy a rancilo wand for my dedica but I don't think I need to go through that pain anymore... Also I found an easier way to cut off the covering. You just need to put a small pairing knife between the metal and the plastic and then hammer on top of the knife which will make it pop right off perfectly. No need for sawing. The 4 extra punctures in the plastic also really helped with steaming. After this mod, the vortex is about 7 times stronger. Can't wait to make a coffee now.

  • @someguy9520

    Got a used one today for 39eur. Tons of coffee residue, calcium and nasty milk frothing on the steam wand. Cleaning took like 2hrs with descaling and cleaning tablets. Got baskets from my dedica, removed the plastic insert and removed the pressurized baskets. It was a bitch to get the non-pressurized basket into the stock portafilter
    Have a bottomless on order. Removed the panarello and used a ziptie to have the rubber tip fixed in place. That way i can preserve it if i sell it later. No need to cut, just twist it clockwise and it should come right off
    I love that the portafilter gets heated so well with this machine compared to the dedica where i need to pull mutiple empty shots to get some heat. Everything is manual, which does make it more plasant for me. Steaming power seems better aswell and more consistent. The dedica hat steam pressure that waved up and down, making consistent foam kinda hard IME

    Ugh, thanks so much for this, the panarello steam wand was driving me up the wall! Couple questions, if you don't mind - when you say you poked adjacent 4 holes into the rubber steam wand near its tip, how large are those holes and by 'adjacent', do you mean that they are at 90 degree angles all round the rubber wand (just confirming)? Also, the machine drips a fair bit after the flow's been stopped with the pressurised filter. do you experience the same with a non-pressurised filter? Thanks in advance!

    • @mjbartending

      hya, I used a standard sowing needle, about 0.7mm. I poked them at angles to replicate an industrial grade tip such as the one in the link below.
      yes, this happened with pressurized filters too. There still is some overpessure in the basket when you turn of the flow, about a good 2-3 seconds in my case. You could flip the switch 2 seconds earlier if needed. images.app.goo.gl/c1UDe1TVPLSi2589A

    Tried to use a zip-tie instead of cutting the outer sleeve for the milk steamer and it makes so much noise now that i use it without the outer sleeve keep in mind that i haven't poked the small holes you did with yours (the zip-tie trick saw it in another video), did you have the same problem before you poked the holes or no? ty for answering

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад

      I had no sound problem prior. Even now there occasionally is more of a gurgling sound but that's fully due to not having the right depth/angle when frothing. Changing one of those until you find the "sweet spot", a steady swooshing sound, solves this for me.

      Hi Reo, yes you can handsaw but it will take much longer. Best spread it out over a couple of days. The first part, getting through the chromed finish, is hardest.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  3 года назад

      Hi. For the double shot one you do need to cut the top 50% of the black plastic insert to make it fit. Cutting the aluminium itself is not needed for any of them. It's only so show the extraction, as you said.

    Great video, thanks! Do you know what happens if you try to use the original basket without the included rubber lined screen?

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад

      From what I know, it is a fail safe to close the seem between the outside housing (which has a single hole) and the inner-filter inlay (the actual filter). Since the fit is pretty tight, initially nothing much should happen without the liner. However, with longer use the heating-cooling may cause the seem to grow, explaining the need of the rubber inlay.
      Note that I also bought original pressurized spare filters and they came from the factory without rubber (as seen in the video). So perhaps that is an improved version.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад +1

      Hi, cutting the portafilter open is not needed to get good crema. You do need non-pressurized filter baskets.
      The weight of coffee will always vary with the type of coffee, roast, grinder and freshness. Currently, I use 18 grams of Peruvian Mayar Omni Roast at a relatively coarse grain. With espresso roast (=lighter) I usually need a finer grain.
      It has been long since I used a pressurized basket and I don't remember what settings I used. Fact is the volume of the baskets is roughly the same so you would never use much more. The 18 grams I mentioned above completely fill my basket, using a coarse grain.

      From what I've read a combination of methods is most likely to help:
      0. Scrub away al external sludge. If any holes are visibly clogged, poke them open with a needle.
      1. soak the basket in espressomachine cleaning fluid for 15 minutes. Warming it slightly can help.
      2. take the basket out and tap it on a surface a few times. Rinse it from the top under hot, flowing water.
      3. repeat 1 and 2
      4. After rinsing, blow through the bottom hole with as much force as you can. Repeat a few times.
      5. Do a few empty runs in the machine without any coffee. If still clogged, repeat 1 to 4.
      To prevent this clogging, grind coarser.

    Is it it better to dial according to weight? So can one can do the ratio of 1.8 - 2.2 by weight whatever your crema is. I have almost the same Delonghi but 33.21 version. I stopped pretending that I get real espresso from it because of thermal instability.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад +1

      That could actually be good, I think, as long as you keep flavour in mind. You are right: crema shouldn't matter as much, I stir it up before drinking anyway. Aromatic balance should be more important, so yes, you can try dialing in by ratio.
      Previously, I kep it simple and stuck to extraction time + crema development only. As a novice, this helped me understand the basics. As you said, the ECP's temperature fluctuates and its peak is a bit too low for "the perfect textbook espresso". Also, I can't adjust the pressure so these are two more reasons why I dialed in this way.
      Personally, I'd now try to start with extraction time to get an idea of the coffee's characteristics, then fine tune by ratio. Maybe in the near future I'll post a video on it, but for now I am exploring slow coffee.

    I am also interested in modifying the portafilter and buying an unpressurized basket for Breville Prima Late. Do you have experience with such a device?
    Can you recommend me where I could buy an unpressurized basket? Thanks.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад

      Hi Cristy, I have no experience with this machine. From what reviews I read, it appears to have a 51mm basket size that takes either DeLonghi or Krupps baskets so you could use the exact same ones I use. The current easiest purchase is a double shot non-pressurized basket from amazon. Just search for "breville krupps non pressurized basket 51mm", or smth along that line.
      As for modding, the pictures of the portafilter that I saw, show that the handle is very close to the bottom, near the spouts. You may risk losing handle integrity when you need to cut that close or even partially through the handle. Also, removing too much material of the portafilter ring could cause it to deform which repetitive heating and cooling. See my short video on this.
      I hope you can make it work, good luck !

    in the single shot factory basket i put about 7g coffee - and i find it touches the group head - is that supposed to happen or what am i doing wrong?

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  10 месяцев назад

      Try a finer grind! If that doesn't help, switch to double basket. The single basket can only take really small dosages in a Delonghi. In my la pavoni, a single shot basket can take around 10+ grams at finer grinds before it touches the group head.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад

      Hi, by timing. You calibrate your grind to such a finesse that you get your 1 or 2 ounce shot in the optimal time for your roast. See my vid on diailing in here: ruclips.net/video/QCJV28lX2No/видео.html

    3:25 This is only helpful to see what is going on. This is not helpful if you are trying to tamp with the bottom of the basket on a surface and I'm mad at myself for cutting mine so the basket is showing. Leaving a rim around the bottom of the portafilter below the basket also helps keep your machine clean if you have any spraying happening from the bottom of the basket during a shot.

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  Год назад

      You can use the rim of the higher cut basket for tamping. It's not optimal but with practice, it works fine. In trade you get higher visibility.

    My steam wand stops before my milk gets frothy. I waited until the green light comes on before i froth my milk but after 15secs it stips and the green light goes off.
    Any idea why? And its brand new!

    • @mjbartending
      @mjbartending  4 года назад

      Same happened to me sometimes, especially with half litre milk jugs. I believe the green light only indicates temperature of a small reservoir, saying the machine is ready to start making steam. To make sure it can build up enough steam, I sometimes do a cleaning purge first and wait until the it goes through a second warm up cycle. This one takes much shorter, 5-8 seconds. Then your machine can keep up while steaming. Often I do not even wait for a second cycle, don't worry if the light jumps to orange again half way; it never stays on green during my steaming sessions yet still produces enough foam.

    • @hanhs850

      @@hanhs850 oh wait, i think i get it. It is because of the automated stand by timer. You need to first warm up the boiler with the switch in the middle (= for making hot water). Once you get green light on that, THEN switch on steam.
      If you switch on steam first, the heating up takes so long in 1 mode that your machine will not get any action or input for too long and turn off. Is that it?

    • @hanhs850
      @hanhs850 4 года назад

      Michel Bartending the machine doesnt turn off tho. Only the green light goes off.. its weird but i shall try to wait for the green light with the switch at middle position and then turn it to steam. Thanks!

      For starting out: it depends.
