A variation on that theme is gore windstopper - I'm a huge fan of if in the autumn & winter. Keeps the chill away, but you don't overheat - witchcraft!
Just went out for a little 20 mile ride after work on a Friday. Man it’s got really cold all of a sudden in the UK. Not had my own bike for around 10 weeks. So glad to of got it back but man I’ve missed a beautiful summer.
Always bring a cap regulating the head, especially for those of us that are follicly challenged / bald it's really important and also is lighter than most of the items discussed!
@@JKNOXDMD I was doing my first ever scuba dive in the Red Sea. I was a skinny 15 years old boy back than and despite the water being 27°C I and me wearing a 3mm neoprene shorty, I was extremely cold after 10 Minutes. There was this very experienced British diver on the boat also, who told me that you loose about 30% of heat via your head and lent my his hood for the second run, which was much more enjoyable.
The fall season finally arrived in N. California today. I did a big ride and loved the fresh air and scenery, but I forgot a windproof softshell. I really needed it on a 1500-ft descent at the end of the ride. I was cold! Also, I am thrilled to see Conor and Hank together. They are fun to watch. Next time, Conor, get Hank to visit Ireland.
I can't believe you neglected mentioning the buff! Especially with the whole C word going on around the world at the moment! Buffs are great at this time of year. I do concur on the rest, though. and probably would have mentioned gilets and 3/4 bibs - and that some warmers are fleece lined and others are not. Plus I might have given rough temperature boundaries that clothing is useful for. Just some extras to think about :D
I agree on Buffs being a great piece of clothing. However, their value as face mask is quite low, and should be avoided, as it doesn’t really filter anything. Sad, but true
@@ronaldbrachetti576 Absolutely in terms of medically, however if you need to step into a cafe etc. to use the loo then (at least here in the UK) a face covering is needed - and the buff is perfect for that, therefore has dual usage!
Tip for using a buff as a mask: Fold the buff over in layers. I use a wool buff, and fold it so it is four layers thick around my mouth and nose. That is enough protection to protect others. There was a study conducted with a buff that many cite to say a buff is inadequate, but that study only looked at number of droplets, and they only used one layer (and in their paper they admit their findings should not be used as a measure of safety, meerly as a means to show how to potentially measure number of droplets expelled). Bottom line, if you fold the buff to leverage multiple layers, and social distance, they should be good enough for protecting others (most masks other than n95 and above are meant to protect others in case you are asymptomatic).
The best thing i have ever bought has to be the Castelli ROS jacket, worth every penny, not just for autumn well in to deep winter too very versatile as it has an inner vest liner that you can unzip on warmer days or zip up to give you two layers at the front chest area on colder days, superb bit of kit.
went out yesterday, sunshine, wind sudden rain downpour, then hail and finished in sunshine ! and it was only 40 odd kms ! You cant beat the Uk weather !
This vid has come at just the right time for me. Had the full gamut of temperature changes today....20 out the door, then 17 mid ride, then back to 20 !. Luckily I was prepared, and my jersey zip saved the day :)
Yeah, but if the feet can't "breathe" they sweat which could make them colder. Just remember to remove the bags later in the day if the weather heats up.
What I love about GCN are the great tips that will definetly need to follow if you're into bike sports. And on top of that, the unpayable british humour/accent that comes in every video makes you really enjoy it ! Best regards from Switzerland and keep on going 😃
Don’t forget something for your neck when it’s less than 10 deg C! Also, dedicated winter shoes/boots with gaiters can save lives when it’s really cold and wet!
Great video, thanks for some good info. This year I have decided I am going to ride even when the weather turns cool. Normally I put the bike up in November and get it out in March. This year I’m riding as much as I can until it gets bitter cold or snow.
So into the jersey pockets go: arm warmers, leg warmers, gloves, raincoat, pump, food, wallet, phone, keys... Maybe I'm better off just getting a frame bag...
What do you think about rain pants? A cold rain shower soaking the tights / leg warmers can make you really cold and possibly sick... Also the water could trickle into the shoes
I commute to work at 2 am and wear a thermal base layer, my one and only summer jersey, a pair of bib tights, gloves and occasionally arm warmers and overshoes if it’s raining
I don't think you missed on anything, however adding links to gear in the description would be a termendous help - especially for us non-native english speakers =)
In the past. When I've been out for a ride wearing my mitts and the temperature has dropped. I have just put my gloves on over my mitts. I usually only do this with thinner gloves.
Base layer, eh? I sweat so much, even in the coldest temps. I'd never thought to try one until now. Thanks! It makes total sense. I do like to wear nitrile gloves under my full finger gloves in the winter since it keeps the sweat from soaking my gloves and making my hands cold. One very important tip with fall riding is eye protection. I prefer a yellow or orange lens because it provides contrast while protecting my eyes from falling detritus/rain. I have acquired a pair of sunnies with photochromatic lenses so we'll see how they work this season.
Great video guys! I miss the suggestion of having a transparent pair of glasses tho. During autumn you can run out of daylight rather quickly, especially when riding in the evenings.
5C is bloody cold to us Aussies, and 15c is still bloody cold. Was in the UK last may. Damn frozen riding, Glad I bought all my winter gear. Local were stripped to racing gear at 15c. Must have thought I was an eskimo.
My best tip is to keep your jacket zipped and unzip your under layers. That way you will always be aero and you can control your core temperature better. If your not sure about how many under layers you will need, put on your vest or jacket and leave them unzipped. If you do get cold you can always zip the under layers up. I ride 6,000 + miles a year, in all weather (except ice). Enjoy and be safe Vern Scriven Columbus Ohio
You covered most of your body whilst cycling in the cold and wet, but what about your mid section shorts area. Do you just put up with a wet bum and bits?

What are your best tips for dressing for the cold and wet?
wear shorts until its too cold to wear shorts any more(and always have a coat in your pocket)
no tips, in my country is basically the same weather (summer) all year
Armwarmers, legwarmers, wind stopping vest , warm hat under helmet, long gloves. These are warm without much bulk.

Maybe an oil and vinegar dressing. Should help displace the wet. Don't know what to do about the cold. You cannot exactly microwave salad.
