My son just bought a pickup. The truck looked great with a few tiny damaged marks on roof, tailgate and hood. We told him when he went to pay to double check the vin number which he did. He paid the man cash. He did not look closely at the title though, and when he went to have the truck re-titled I recognized he had bought a "flooded rebuilt" vehicle. I wish he had seen some of the videos like yours about what to look for. Thanks for doing a great video.
Great video! No bogus music or lame attempts at bad humor. Direct and to the point. Exactly what I'm looking for in an informative video. Thank you sir!
This video came up in my recommendation just in time. I'm going to look at a car tomorrow that has a "rebuilt" title. Now I know what to do to make sure it's legitimate. Thank you
4 years later and I’m in the same boat, did you ever end up buying the rebuilt title car? I’m looking into a BMW that was flooded around 37k miles someone bought it and rebuilt the car had it until 90k miles and sold it to the guy I’m about to buy it from at 110k miles. He says the title is rebuilt but just skeptical because this would be my first time dealing with anything other than a clean title.
I remember seeing a 4 series 435xi that looked pristine but had a salvage title, I was tempted to buy it because it was fully loaded and low miles but after more research learned it's not that easy to register it. Ended up buying a E400 that was certified pre owned and haven't looked back since!
It depends on which state you live in. In MO a car with a salvage title can be driven on the road. I bought a 96 BMW that was impounded after being abandoned in a ditch. Had a hole in the gas tank and was missing the front bumper. Went up to the local Highway patrol they made sure that no stolen parts were used in the repairs and gave a title to me.
This is not the case in California. A salvaged car remains salvaged even once you register it; however, "salvage" can mean anything from theft, to complete destruction. When an owner refuses to take car back after accident, the insurance scraps it (car must have damage exceeding certain percentage of cars value). If car is stolen, owner can refuse it too with good insurance. I have purchased many salvaged cars over the years with damage to rear end, hail or theft. These cars are truly a good buy and didnt cause issues after purchase.
No it works the same in every state. If you have a salvage title, you can't register the car. You have to get an inspection verifying none of the repaired parts were stolen. Then they hand you a sealed envelope with the salvage title in it saying whether or not it has passed inspection. You must bring that sealed envelope to your local tag agency where you can then register you car as long as it says your car has passed inspection when they open the envelope.
FrostyFooy lol, doesn't work the same in California. Salvage titles can be registered at the dmv, it's actually very simple paperwork and yes, an inspection is required by the dmv inspector or in some cases they sent you to a CHP (california highway patrol) for the inspection.
Couldn't agree more. I own a 2009 corvette c6 rebuilt title. 2013 Taurus SHO rebuilt 2012 Silverado LTZ 6.2 rebuilt title All have been reliable and cost me a TOTAL of $55k for all 3 . People spend that much on new half ton trucks these days, and I know what I'd rather be driving. What's not to like ?
Clarity is important. Sometimes we speak clearly but our listeners do not really listen. Thanks for providing a "HEY, LISTEN TO ME!" video that states this information clearly and without distractions for the many who do not understand these terms. I was taught by my grandfather that a salvage yard is a junk yard, so a Salvage title means you are buying junk, or a car that is not roadworthy. Something that has been rebuilt means it has been completed a second time, so a Rebuilt title means the car has been built again, and is ready to drive.
thanks for the education - lots of salvage cars from the USA end up being exported into developing markets. I doubt they have to get registered as rebuilt before they can be exported. But where I am at the moment in Nigeria it is clear that even a poorly 'rebuilt' car is better than other much more expensive options.
In TX all you have to do to get a salvage title car on the road is get it inspected (lights work, no check engine light, goes forward and stops, has mirrors) then sign the rebuilt papers stating your the rebuilder. You can vaugly list what you fixed and also give them copies of receipts. But I just said I got a door paid with cash and replaced lights. Tada rebuilt title, and there's the normal taxes and a 60$ fee
I know this is old but thanks for this comment. I won a salvage title car from Copart and thought I was gonna have to go and rebuild The Whole damn car
@@suspensefulness people sometimes list salvage rebuilt cars as salvage, the difference is a salvage car can not legally drive on the road. if you have a flood car that was deemed salvage but still drives fine it is not road legal until it has been inspected ( standard tx safty/ and if your near a major metro area like dallas, austin, etc etc emissions as well.) there are some cases when cars can be branded salvage unrepairable or salvage lemmon branding. but for tx its pretty simple
Just found your channel, btw I agree with you about Rob F. He's a transparent person & that's why he's one of my favorite channels. I found your channel from the Autoblog video. I like the channel, it's different & gives a different insight on buying these types of cars.
Always check your local state laws on branded titles. I drive a car with a salvage title in North Carolina and had no trouble getting it registered and street legal, and I've owned that car for four years now.
Hey Samcrac, nice video! Have you ever heard of Prestman Auto? They sell vehicles that have been rebuilt. Just wondering what your thoughts on them are?
This varies state to state. In Idaho I can register and insure a "Salvage" titled vehicle. I have had a couple cars deemed a "total loss" by the insurance company and I was reimbursed for the damages and retained the vehicle. I then applied for a salvage title through the state DMV.
EVERY STATE HAS THEIR OWN WAYS. In WA state Rebuild and Salvaged are treated about the same. If person who sells has title on hand in his name - there is nothing to worry about its just like buying clean title. Just make sure you know what you are buying. I usually want to see pictures of the car from action like how bad was damage. If only front bumper, hood and head light were replaced its not that bad. But some cars are damaged in the front and in the rear and plus rolled over.?!?!... I would skip that car :) People who buy Rebuild Title cars are doing that because they want to get $15,000 car for $7000. That is usually the case
Thoughts on purchasing an extended service plan on a rebuilt title vehicle? The plan is sold by the dealer that did the work but administered the by a 3rd party. Essentially it’s a plus +5 year / 100k mile plan that covers everything the manufacturer warranty covers. But it’s an insurance based claims plan.
so in order to get the rebuild title, does the car have to be in the same structual condition as a clean titel? can the be any bend metal? cant find the video you said youre going to do about the ispection process.... thinking about buying a rebuild salvage title car at auction.
Here in AZ, they don't care if it's salvage. They'll let you register and drive it. Got my 12k silverado for 6k. Salvage title baby. Insurance marked the truck for salvage because the pickup bed was hit really bad and they thought the frame was destroyed. A dealer who sells cars out of his house put a used bed on it, painted it and sold it to me. Went and actually had the frame checked. Straight as an arrow. I just had to adjust the bed because when they mounted it, it was slightly crooked. Invested no more money than the inspection and bam, rebuilt title. Great vehicle for half price.
My 2009 Honda Accord is a rebuilt title but I was in a car accident and it has been declared a total loss. Literally the damage is minor but they say it cost too much. If I decide to repair it myself, will FL issue a rebuilt a second time?
I appreciate this. Great heads up. I was just looking at a ‘18 Acura MDX with 86k miles. It was listed as “salvage/rebuilt” title by the company selling it. Liked and sub’d. 👍
I see a lot of salvage titles on Craig’s list. I never knew they aren’t road legal. Thanks for the clarification. N/m I’m in CA. We either get salvaged or clean.
Hi samcrac I have a question I am thinking about getting a rebuilt title 2002 Toyota 4 runner but I’m kind of skeptical of getting it cuz It had a history it got into an accident front end collision but motor wasn’t touched but the one that got me that it has low mileage of 76k which is really rare to see nowadays. Very insightful. I have recently purchased a nissan 2015 rebuilt title already in hand. It had front end damaged and was repaired completely. He had gave me vin number in advance and the carfax was ok as of December 2018. I purchased it for 4800 dollars. I shouldn't have an issue with the registration and insurance? Please advise. Car is currently sitting in my father's garage
Hey Sam its completely different in other states like here in California a Salvage title is issued , if you ask or get a CHP inspection you get a rebuilt title issued
So what If I buy a rebuilt title car in NJ and I live in new york do I need to get it inspected in new york. Or just use that Nj rebuilt title as a normal title at new york dmv?
hey Sam. I'm looking far and near for a decent 4x4 Suburban at a decent price. I found one that's 5.5 hours away. It's at a used car lot. I got them to send me the "AutoCheck" document and it all checks out except for one thing. It says that the vehicle was very recently auctioned and then "reconditioned" by a Toyota Dealership. Should that raise red flags for me. It kinda does. Thanks for your thoughts!
Also some state have laws when buying cars. if they are mislabeled, or other stuff will allow you to go after them regardless but you have to check with your state or the state you are buying the car from, what the laws are.
It's weird I bought a fully rebuilt car and it was sold to me as salvaged (even after a new fender, quarter, bumpers, and a radiator along with a professional paint job)
I bought a 2004 Dodge Neon that had a salvage title. I looked up the carfax on it. It was rear ended. The only damage was a small crack in the rear bumper cover and the paint was scuffed. The car's book value was $600, so the repair and paint would have cost more than the car was worth, so the insurance company totaled the car giving it a salvage title. I had it inspected and never repaired the damage. I just told the cop why it totaled. He just made sure all the lights worked and gave me a pass so I could get a rebuilt title. I have put about 50k more miles on it since I bought it as a to and from work car. The only thing I've bought for it is new tires. I paid $400 for the car at the abandoned auto auction.
My truck has a salvaged title since it was wrecked, I FIXED it and had it inspected but it still says salvage on the paperwork and I still have insurance on it. I live in California if that varies the difference...
My wife and I, too, had a salvaged 02 Focus we bought for $5500 back in like 2004. My wife got rear-ended in it after about a year, and the other party's insurance company gave us $12500 for it. :)
PartyWolf11Official great buy!!some people worry about rebuild title, and I don't know why..especially if car runs and drives excellent.. Good deal man,I had one few years back myself with rebuilt title, and I looved it
I'm being offered a 2019 nissan rogue sv rebuilt title. How much is this car today? Is there a way to know the true price of a rebuilt? Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Never buy a offer up car off the street , it’s a risk . I bought a lemon , engine went out and needed a new one. You get what you pay for or “lo barato sale caro “ 👍
I always buy rebuilt title cars that have been crashed because a insurance company will total a car in a heart beat! hell my sister got a 2014 equinox for 3500$ needs a new bumper and repainted hood and fenders and you cant tell what happened (it ran through a barbed wire fence) and im lookin for a low milage new edge mustang gt atm and it should only be about 2500 through and through so yes imo a rebuilt car is not a bad deal at all
I'm looking into a car it's a 2013 scion Tc and it shows a rebuilt title on it but when I go to look at the free report that you provided for us to use.
