That boarded up place in Dudley with “Bostin” written on it was one of THE first McDonalds that opened up in the UK. 1980 I’d say. I remember opening day there and the queues to taste “the new American fast food” went outside and all the way down to Barclays Bank!
@@tatsnneeps341 the one in Dudley might’ve been late 1970’s then? But it was that same boarded up shop shown here. I’d get excited when my mom would take me for a burger and fries there - they had an actual Ronald McDonald walking around in there some days and there was a kids section with a slide and red/white toadstools to sit on. The servings were massive!
Quite sure you can just about make out a dirty mark that looks like where the ‘m’ was on the right side. Having said, I don’t go in those places. Think I stopped by one last on Boxing Day night in 2010 and that was only to have a bottle of water. I was 19 then. Never bought anything from there since then. I’d be more than happy to see that chain leave the UK tbh.
The pub in Dudley - Tankard's fell out of fashion because of pale ale. It was actually due to a lowering of glass taxes in the 1850s after the Napoleonic Wars that beers went from dark to light. Glass was much cheaper and less labour intensive than a tankard and things like porters and dark beers lowered in popularity because of this as you could see the liquid. Pale Ales (4.5 to 5.5% ABV) and India Pale Ales/IPA (5.6/6.5%) became more popular as people associated clearer drinks with being "better" and more healthy as they knew dark water wasn't see as clean.
@@stevemcgowen India Pale Ale became that way as they sent the beer with more sugars to brew whilst in transit, which is why IPAs were traditionally stronger. These days you get session IPAs at 3.5% but a decade back, it was far more regimented in what was what. Guess people are drawn to Pale Ales, Stouts and IPAs by name of the beer rather than the brewer, which is a sad state of affairs.
For pubs, should definitely have stopped by the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley after the Pie Factory. Brew their own beer on site and the place hasn't changed since I grew up as a kid.
Loving the Wolves rock pub, knocking out the obscure 90s alt.rock - they were playing The Almighty's 'Do You Understand?' off the stonking 'Just Add Life' record.
It’s debated but the Black Country is defined by areas on the coal seam that were mined. I’m a Dudley girl, you needed to try surrounding areas with their own breweries. Love the Gifford, had some good nights in there!!!
I can't help but feel Wendall did you dirty lol The Giffard is awesome on a Saturday evening, not a shadow of itself from back in the early 90's but still a good night out. The Lych Gate in the middle of town is good for real ales, very homely The Old Still and Billy Wright are both really lively during the day beers a bit ropey in The Still slightly better in The Billy.
Hahaha! Loving this one, mate. You seen a bit grouchy on this journey. I love how "honest" your channel is and anything with Wendall in it is ace. Luv ya mate.

1st McDonald's to open in the uk was in Powis St, Woolwich, South East London in 1974... big macs were 45p 👍
@@tatsnneeps341 that seems quite expensive for 1974. How much was a Happy Meal?

Many people do not realise that Birmingham is in fact, not a part of the Black Country. Brummies call Black Country folk, "Yam Yams."
And we call Brummies Dummy Brummies.
