I hope he gets better soon for you all.

Sable, that "red wood" is cedar. It's a cedar chest. Companies like Lane used to make them and possibly still do. Girls used to get them as "hope chests" to put in items they would need when they got married, like quilts. They were really popular in the 50's and earlier. And, as others have said, cedar keeps moths away.

Don't paint or coat the inside. The cedar wood has a nice smell to it if left alone. Also, don't let the sun shine into the box interior or the cedar will slowly shift over to more of a brown. And be careful sanding the outside of the box if that happens to be cedar too. Cedar is very soft and light weight and will sand away to nothing pretty quick.

Do your best refinishing the exterior. Even if it doesn’t come out perfect, it will be a valuable asset to you for years to come. By the way , I found one just like that a few years ago that had a veneer on the outside that was severely peeling. So, I just peeled it off , sanded it down and polyurethanes it. Nothing like a little snow. I live in the mountains.Oh look it’s snowing. I get to plow snow with my Kubota tractor. It’s always a great day when I drive my Kubota tractor. Snow is a beautiful thing, when you get a blizzard don’t you think!🤙
    Take care and stay safe.😀

Sable, it is a cedar chest. Give the inside a light sanding and it will bring back the cedar smell. Great for strong blankets and the like.. Fun project.

Sable, that's a HOPE CHEST made from CEDAR WOOD. They are great for storing quilts in as the wood keeps moths away.

Sable should find some thin plywood and finish the hope chest in the area that she removed the blocks. Then stain the entire outside. Furniture grade plywood.

Smart business is being cautious. You can never be sure with used equipment, but a good gut check with experience can be all you need. Good luck cornstars!

Hey Cole we had some 18 row folding corn heads and we got rid of them because of these reasons. The first thing that goes out and is a big problem is the hinges that fold the headers down and if they break then your stuck not picking corn till it’s fixed. Also when your on the road your road speed is slower because of all the weight on the front. I would say try and find just a standard head and not a folding.

Ha, that snow is what we call a light dusting up here in northeast Minnesota. You want snow, we got snow. Actually after getting over 100 inches last winter, we have had a light winter, but, it is cold, -20 here this Sunday morning, and, that is actual temp not windchill. Of course we have had much colder temps than that, so it is almost balmy.

Sable, here locally in Virginia Red Cedar is as popular as Corn Cobs where you are. Everyone sells it to make a little money. The big box stores sell tongue n grooved to use a closet liner. Smells soooo good when its sanded Has many uses. Cedar is supposed to keeps the moths out of your cloths.

Sable, that is a Lane Cedar chest. The cedar is not stained but it is coated to keep the cedar resin from getting on the things inside. There is a serial number on the bottom of the chest. If you read it backwards it tells you when the cedar chest was manufactured.
